Togepi are one of the few pokemon who learn the metronome attack, and here in ASB, that has not gone unnoticed. Many a metronome battles are had, where metronome and only metronome are used; the thing is, these battles require no skill whatsoever.

Pedesi, being a determined little fellow, was quite displeased with the utter randomness of these battles. He was quite sure that he was the better metronomer, if only he had some way of proving it. And so he set about on finding some way of doing so.

After many exhaustive battles and practice sessions in which Pedesi's improvement was slow, something clicked, quite literally. His constant metronome-ing had worked - he had found it, that thing that made his metronome superior to others, just like he knew he would.

Effects: Pedesi's metronome acts as normal, but whatever attack it draws forth is remembered for 1-3 actions or until metronome is used again, at which point the newly used attack will replace the old one. Metronome costs 1-2% more energy, as do the attacks Pedesi uses that he's learned through the use of metronome.

Expy, if you could do what you did a while ago that'd be great >:3 Any kind of destruction you want is fine. Draco Meteors everywherrrrrre though

The morning after a certain disaster in Hearthome City, anyone stalking a certain referee or one of the trainers directly involved in said disaster would have to conclude that neither of them are good people. When all three accomplices flew off to contact ASB Central, it looked like it was the end of it, and they would never show their faces in Sinnoh again.

Apparently not. After an evolution and a submission of a report to Asber’s head referee, the two flew off to meet another contact in a small town directly north of Hearthome City, apparently having planned—before the previous disaster even came to a close—to do it all again.

The people of Celestic Town, unfortunately, have no televisions. If they had, perhaps they would be a little more suspicious of the trainer lurking by the shrine since midnight. They would probably be nervous about the exchange of solemn nods as the two newcomers land. And they’d definitely start panicking when they hear the referee refresh them on the list of rules.

Cognizant of the lack of terror they’re causing, the referee decides to drop all pretences of subtlety.

“And let’s see something cool this time,” the referee says. It yawns and leans against the sacred shrine at the centre of the town. “Get the cave, at least… the cave’s the only thing here… wait, that’s Cynthia’s family’s house, right? Destroy that, too.”

That’s when the village elder focuses all of her attention on them.

“Uh… they’re in the same direction. The cave’s under the manor. So, you know, if any legendary moves happen… no, send them out first, the pokémon have to hear this.”

Pathos throws a poké ball dramatically, calling forth on the pokémon’s power. The ball seems to explode upon hitting the ground, and the brilliant white light and angelic fanfare etch themselves into the minds and hearts of all observers. In the midst of it all, drawing everyone’s attention even before the light fades, is a small egg-shaped pokémon who seems to be wearing a crown beset with a pink jewel. Much dimmer flashes on either side of the togepi reveal an abra and drowzee, the former covered in some sort of shiny metallic paint.

Windragon cackles and sends out three familiar pokémon – well, they’re familiar to the referee, and would be familiar to anyone present a few hours ago in Hearthome. They’re much healthier now, though, and one has even evolved as a result of all that destruction; a togetic, meditite, and sableye appear. They all wear similar expressions, variations on eager grins and confidence in themselves, though the sableye grins the widest.

“Right,” the referee says. It points in the direction of the cave. “Your goal is to destroy that. And each other, a little bit, but you can use regular moves for that. But if you feel god-like power coming over you, aim it in that direction. That’s why we’re here.”

Windragon eagerly names the moves he wants to see this time around, showing a bias toward flashy, powerful moves even over widespread destruction—though perhaps that could be forgiven for the first round in a place where there isn’t much of value to destroy. Ashglade and Nanasa accept their orders with determined nods, while Expostion’s only response is to grin even wider.

Pathos gives Castiel a solemn nod and affirms the pokémon’s orders to destroy everything, but he does so more calmly. Allitersonance and Beyonce exchange blank looks (at least, as much as they can with one party never opening its eyes). Whatever they might be saying to each other, no one else can hear, but they don’t seem pleased to be ignored.

Now the village elder is starting to get slightly more desperate than that time a spaceman wanted to blow up the cave. Meaning she’s looking around for eleven year old trainers to help her rather than waiting for them to come to her. Destruction and blasphemy? The nerve of it all… If only she were younger, she’d punish those trainers with her pokémon…

Round One

Allitersonance waggles its fingers in the pattern that will set the tone for this battle. Its fingers move in accordance with the tick-tock-tick-tock that only it can hear in its head, subtly different from nearly all the other metronomes it will ever perform, and as it does so, energy leaks out of the worn holes in the fabric of reality, spilling into its fingers. Its fingers glow.

The most spectacular thing that happens, though, is Allitersonance standing and going through quick warm-up exercises while reciting positive messages in its head, and while that is pretty amazing, it’s not really what anyone hopes for. Still, it feels much better after loosening its muscles and reminding itself of its awesomeness. Nanasa, though, is unimpressed, and loudly mocks it. It thinks it’s so amazing because it can do a few stretches? Nanasa’s an actual fighting-type, and her warm-up for this battle was an actual battle, not any of this wimpy stretching after the battle’s already started stuff. Allitersonance growls and lunges at her, but Nanasa’s leg, glowing black, merely sweeps out the abra’s legs from underneath it and sends it crashing to the ground.

Cackling, Exposition joins in on the fun and breathes out in the abra’s direction. Nanasa backs away, certain it can’t be anything good for anyone targeted, but Allitersonance is more focused on grumbling and getting back to its feet while ignoring the pain. It notices the slight breeze brushing its fur, but it doesn’t notice the slight sparkling in the air, nor does it notice the dust being drawn into its lungs when it breathes. It simply lets its muscles relax and collapses on the dewy grass once more.

Beyonce calls out to Nanasa and mocks her for using such cheap tactics—Nanasa’s a psychic, and a fighting-type besides, but she has to rely on her opponent’s physical strength to hurt it? An abra’s physical strength, to boot? How pathetic! Nanasa growls and she, too, lunges, apparently not noticing the glee in Beyonce’s eyes just before Beyonce covers her fist with darkness and slams it into Nanasa’s chest, letting the force of Nanasa’s own attack do most of the work. The breath comes out of Nanasa’s lungs with a whuff, and when she collapses, she stares up at Beyonce with wide eyes.

Ashglade ignores this, though, and instead bounds off to hop on the let’s-beat-on-Allitersonance bandwagon. Exposition obligingly moves out of the way, and Ashglade dips his head in and gives Allitersonance’s ear a small nip. He sucks in some of the blood, to Exposition’s amusement, but it doesn’t seem that harmful. Exposition hops and cackles until white smoke envelops her and drives her into a coughing fit. Castiel gives his trainer a solemn nod, pleased with having smitten such evil, or at least irritating it. And he can do it again, if called to do so, because his metronome is unlike the metronome of anyone else.

Nanasa briefly contemplates whether she should use fire or lightning against her opponents, then shakes her head. She'd rather the blue brilliance of lightning, she thinks, and waggles her fingers. Instead, though, she finds herself flapping her arms like wings and whips up the air into a whirlwind. Those with sharper eyes would notice slight scratches appearing in the wood of the shrine and some tips of the grass being cut off and ripped away by the wind, but it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere fast. Exposition shakes off her coughs and raises a hand, the glow of her finger extending to a bell that hangs as though being held. She taps it with her other finger, producing a sweet chime that immediately calms her coughing, but not much else. Nanasa and Ashglade give small smiles at the sound. Beyonce ends her metronome with her eyes closed, willing her body to heal before she realises that she has yet to be harmed. It’s normally a good thing, but here, it seems like a waste, and she drops her arms with a frown.

Ashglade glances at his prevolution. The abra’s blood was tasty, but he’s looking for something more, and, well, what could be more pure than someone’s very life force? Castiel twitches when he finds part of his soul being drawn out of his body as a green aura, and shoots Ashglade an annoyed look as he sees tendrils being drawn toward the togetic. But his irritation quickly turns to alarm when he sees that pieces of the aura rip off and sink into Ashglade’s body, making him feel like he’s being ripped apart inside each time. By the time he can bring his soul back into his body, he’s left in a cold sweat, and he can only calm himself by calling on the ever-steady tick-tock of the metronome. He, too, summons up a harsh whirlwind, but not before Nanasa sneers and pushes her own whirlwind at Beyonce. Dust and grass go flying, and Beyonce, though she manages to brace herself on the ground, can’t stop deep cuts from appearing in her flesh. Castiel grunts and, mind made up, pushes his whirlwind in Nanasa’s direction; though it doesn’t cut her, it does make her shriek when it lifts her into the air and spins her about. It’s not quite strong enough to carry her, and she drops to the ground with as much grace as she can, and the whirlwind breaks itself harmlessly against the sacred cave.

As Allitersonance slumbers on, Nanasa puckers her lips, which, alarmingly, come out to a point and harden. She runs toward Beyonce and stabs Beyonce’s thick skin, only to be shrugged off; still, her mouth returns to normal afterward, which is enough to draw relief. The gems on Exposition’s backside glitter, and a short purple tail, nothing but a small blade, grows from the base of her spine. She lunges at Castiel and spins at the last second, slashing through his fragile shell. He squeals, but neither of them notice that the mysterious blade – now already gone – had been dripping purple, nor do they notice the poison in his wound.

Beyonce’s call upon the chaotic energies underlying the world brings a slight smile to her face, as well as a boost of confidence. She turns up the charm and sidles up to Ashglade, who just gives her an irritated look. But she smiles softly and tries to adjust her body language to appeal. But, when Ashglade’s expression becomes nothing but disgust and horror, she can’t say she’s entirely surprised. He’s an enemy, so anything that makes him scoot away from her should be a good thing. Still, she’d hoped he was better than that.

Ashglade shakes his head and paws in an attempt to forget, but a shudder still wracks his body. He turns instead upon Castiel, a pokémon he’s far more interested in. Eating Castiel’s soul was much more fulfilling than he expected, and he’d quite like to see why. His eyes glow, and he stares, piercing the illusion that Castiel is a mere togepi, or indeed, even a mere mortal trapped in such a shell… the eye-burning brilliance of Castiel’s true self burns into Ashglade’s mind. Or at least, that’s what Castiel tells himself. In truth, Ashglade doesn’t really see anything so wonderful, and must conclude that his attack was simply especially effective.

Preening, Castiel thinks that now would be a wonderful time to show everyone his true brilliance. He glows a brilliant gold and, when he spreads his arms, golden wings sprout from his back. He leaps into the air and rises higher and higher, shining ever brighter. The four other conscious pokémon stare in awe, and there is nothing they can do when he abruptly changes direction. Nanasa, even with the calm stoicism gained from years of meditation, can’t help but wheeze when the shining strike bears her to the ground, and while the togepi manages to roll off her with an exhilarated grin, she can only let out a small moan.

Notes:
- Nanasa wasn’t sure what to use on the second action, as there were no details to the if-clauses, so it was randomised. She picked metronome.
- Ashglade’s giga drain was a critical hit.
- Exposition’s poison tail poisoned Castiel.

- I didn’t use the One True Generator for this round, hence the patheticness of the moves. Fear not, for said metronome generator has returned since. The future is bright!

Round Two

Allitersonance awakens with a small snort. It takes less than a second to process everything that happened just before it fell asleep, and it quickly gets to its feet and starts its second metronome for the battle. It doesn’t want to fall behind, after all. Still, it is rather sleepy; while its opponents seem to have attacked it in its sleep, with all those wounds it doesn’t remember getting, they haven’t really done that much to it. It half-heartedly punches Ashglade, who gives it an almost insulted glare. Neither of them notice the grin on Nanasa’s face as she steps toward the pair, and she calls for Ashglade to step away. The togetic does, but the abra only has time to blink at her before Nanasa thrusts its hands forward, barely-visible spores shooting out from her hands. Allitersonance can only give her the most incredulous look in existence before its facial muscles relax and it collapses into a heap on the ground once more.

Exposition jumps and cackles, then leaps onto Allitersonance to attack it with as much force as she can summon. She punches and kicks with everything she’s got, not even caring that Allitersonance stirs or curls up protectively around its stomach, and by the time she stops, breathing hard and grinning, she’s not even thinking about defending herself against anything. So she doesn’t suspect a thing when Beyonce turns toward her and looses a loud bellow that echoes through Celestic Town. Granted, it seems she wouldn’t have noticed anyway, especially when flames leap up around Ashglade’s body – much more interesting than someone shouting at her for attacking a sleeping pokémon. Ashglade charges at Beyonce, head lowered, and forces a pained grunt from the drowzee.

But now it’s Castiel’s turn for revenge, and he’s eager to get it. As Ashglade bounces on his feet, enjoying the newfound looseness of his muscles, Castiel leaps at him and pounds on his back with tiny togepi fists. Ashglade squawks, irritated, until Nanasa knocks the togepi off with a surprisingly hard fist. Or not a fist, as Castiel finds when he glares at the meditite. Nanasa’s hand seems to have morphed into an approximation of a crab’s claw, hard and sharp, but the material between her fingers disintegrates almost as soon as Castiel starts looking at it.

Ashglade flounces over to Allitersonance as Exposition reaches a hand toward Castiel. Ashglade leaps into the air, dropping yet more spores onto Allitersonance. These ones are not meant to be inhaled, however, nor do they have chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin; they just land all over Allitersonance’s fur and grow tiny roots. Then each spore explodes into a ball of fluff, and Allitersonance, covered in them, becomes a reasonable approximation of an abra-shaped cloud. Exposition feels giggles bubbling up within her, but she doesn’t know whether they originate in her, or in Castiel, who is similarly failing to stifle his laughter. They are connected, after all, and they can feel what the other feels—though, she finds, not entirely to her surprise, that Castiel is in more pain than she is. The sensation of wounds that she doesn’t—didn’t would be the more correct term, now that a cut similar to the one she gave him opens up on her—have hurts, while Castiel pokes at his own itching cut, which is only half as deep as before.

Beyonce can’t really tell what Exposition is doing, but she doesn’t like it. And she doesn’t like having been ignored before. In fact, she quite despises being ignored, especially when a little insect like that sableye would dare ignore all the power she holds in her mind. In fact, all of them will fall in due time, but she’ll focus on the sableye for now. She reaches out with her powerful mind, a mind stronger than any that might naturally occur in this world, and… finds nothing. She’s left grasping at the empty void the sableye represents, and fuming. Oh, that sableye will burn for this.

Castiel, too, isn’t pleased with the icky feeling of sharing his mind with an enemy, and even if he overall feels a little better, there’s that itching in his throat he gave her that he doesn’t really enjoy. He draws air in front of him and looses a pocket of concentrated air like a blade, one that slices shallowly into Exposition’s belly.

If Castiel hadn’t been admiring his work (only slightly, but it’s the job of his sword to smite evil, after all), he might have noticed Nanasa stepping up to him in time to avoid it. He does notice when the air around him is suddenly filled with sparkles, though, and he manages to whip around at the meditite and open his mouth in preparation for saying something. But drowsiness overcomes him, and he relaxes and flops to the ground. Nanasa smirks. Upstage that, Exposition.

Exposition’s attempt at doing just that is instead calling on a mystical power, her own kin, though they do not look the part. She dances and twists and coils in a manner entirely unsuited to her stature, and it is perhaps a mercy onto Ashglade when his leg muscles suddenly strengthen and, with a powerful kick, send him shooting up through the sky.

Beyonce isn’t going to let that stand, either. These pokémon around her, battling as though for fun instead of killing, are entirely alien to her, and there is no point in holding back. All she needs is one powerful strike. She gathers up all of her mental energies into her paws and glares up at Ashglade. It is difficult to determine when Ashglade will start to fall, but as long as she calculates it right—

A brilliant blast of energy shoots through the sky, taking much of the roof of the Elder’s manor with it, but her angle is entirely too shallow and shoots under Ashglade entirely, and even when she tries to adjust her angle, the remnants of her mental energies dissipate before actually striking the togetic. Beyonce breathes hard and glances at her sleeping allies. Yes, some rest would be nice, too, but they really ought to wake up and not leave her fighting these three alone.

Ashglade’s eyes still smart from the brilliant blast of energy burning into his eyes, and he’s not sure he really wants to land. Surely, if he just opened his wings and started to fly… but he ultimately lets himself fall, angling himself feet-first in a kick that lands powerfully on Allitersonance’s back. Allitersonance yelps, jerking awake, but its muscles ache and barely refuse to move. Ashglade twitches as he finds himself suddenly stiff as well, and frowns. Perhaps he landed wrongly.

Celestic Town is a rather tiny place, but it's legend is well-known. There are some who say it's the town where Sinnoh came to be created, and the crater-like pit in the middle of town, centered by a shrine which was there before any human can remember, certainly doesn't hurt the legend. There's also a tiny cave, with strange carvings on the wall, but they don't seem to be of any interest to... anyone.

The battle takes place morning-time during the spring; lush grass and lovely bright ponds are spread about Celestic, enough for any pokemon to do whatever they might want.

Round Three

Nanasa’s skin reddens as her body heats up far past any fever, and the light sheen of sweat covering her body steams into the cool morning air. She turns her head to look at Beyonce, giving the drowzee a split second’s warning before Nanasa throws out a hand, and with it, an eye-searing white curtain of pure flames. And if the other pokémon think the light is burning itself into their eyes, it’s still nothing compared to Beyonce’s wretched scream. The sparse hairs on her body disintegrate in the blast, but while the flames last barely a few seconds, the pain lingers. Beyonce’s scream dies, and she’s left panting nearly as hard as Nanasa.

Exposition envelops Beyonce with the tightest hug she can manage. Beyonce grunts as Exposition’s claws dig into her skin. She doesn’t know what the ghost is up to, but this, at least, should make Exposition easier to hit. She glares down at Exposition, forcing her mind toward the sableye’s and trying to invade Exposition’s mind at any angle, but all she can detect is an impenetrable black void. She pushes Exposition off instead, and the sableye stumbles backward into a blast of wind, courtesy of a smirking Allitersonance.

Ashglade matches the abra’s smirk. Something dark underlies his mind, filling him with confidence, and when he speaks, the same darkness draws the attention of everyone present. But he’s only interested in talking to Allitersonance, a fact that flatters it as it listens to Ashglade’s words. This is just a metronome battle, Ashglade says, and it’s entirely about luck. Allitersonance’s trainer obviously doesn’t care about what a true metronome battle is about, the submission of oneself to pure chance, but Allitersonance ought to know better. That metal coating covering its body, under all that fluff? That’s nearly cheating, really, but more important, won’t do any good at all. And that special move it learned from humans, Ashglade reasons, is completely useless in this battle anyway. Why not just forget about it, put it aside for a bit, and have a real metronome battle like real pokémon? Allitersonance nods, enraptured by Ashglade’s words, and even Beyonce glances at the egg in her hand, wondering if she really needs it. Ashglade laughs gently. Good, good. Then the pact is sealed.

Nanasa, though, is more disturbed than anything. That—that wasn’t charisma, she’d say. That was pure seduction, and part of her rejects something in Ashglade’s very tone, though she can’t say what. Still, it’s good to have the togetic on her side. She waggles her fingers and, abruptly, her body, still far above its normal temperature, cools. She opens her mouth and exhales. The frigid blast of air wafts over Beyonce, Allitersonance, and Castiel, making them shiver, and more importantly, drawing Allitersonance out of its stupor.

Exposition darts at Castiel before anyone else can react, punching the togepi on the head, though Castiel just murmurs and attempts to curl into the dewy grass. Beyonce chews something sticky in her mouth, then spits out a gluey string that hits Exposition’s torso, and with a few quick jerks of Beyonce’s head, sticks to Exposition’s arms and legs as well. The string doesn’t manage to wrap around Exposition at all, but the glue holds fast to her ghostly skin, and the string that links her limbs together restrict her movement.

Water spills from Allitersonance’s hands and gently swirl around it, held up by nothing more than its mental powers. The water, more a mist than anything, cools and refreshes it, and it would swear even its bruises feel just a little better. Ashglade would say the opposite about his own condition, though; whatever Allitersonance did to him made it hard enough to move, but apparently his muscles can lock up so completely he can’t even waggle his fingers properly. Like this, he can barely be more useful than that slumbering togepi nearby.

Sheer power flows into Nanasa’s muscles, even more than the usual strength underlying her every move, as though some mental block on using her muscles has been lifted. She steps forward, lifts Allitersonance effortlessly above her head, and throws it into the shrine. Allitersonance grunts and slides down into the grass.

Exposition freezes for a second when a quite familiar compulsion makes itself known, accompanied by sudden strength. She digs her claws into the ground and heaves, pulling it apart. Though her claws touch nothing but dirt, the earth beneath responds to her call. With a loud CRACK, the earth splits, starting from her claws, running under Castiel and Allitersonance and the shrine, and even beyond it, beyond the edges of the town and into a distant route leading to Mt. Coronet. But she’s barely getting started. The earth groans and shudders, and the crack begins to widen.

Allitersonance hastily scuttles away from the widening crack. Beyonce just glances at it to ensure that nothing’s coming for her, then closes her eyes and turns her attention inward, forcing her frustrations at her last few unsuccessful attacks and instead just retreating to a place where none of that matters.

Castiel doesn’t even notice when the earth moves around him—at first, at least. But when he suddenly drops a few centimetres into the ground, he’s abruptly awoken. Still, by then it’s too late, and he can do nothing but scream as he falls. The sound fades, but its actual cessation is abrupt. Mercifully, the sound of his flesh and fragile shell hitting the fissure’s bottom are impossible to hear, overridden by the cracks and crash of the wooden shrine collapsing on itself as the ground moves beneath it, and then it, too, is swallowed by the earth. The referee whoops, raising its baton in triumph, and at some suspicious stares, grins and denies having had anything to do with that last bit.

Allitersonance lifts its hands and waggles its fingers, quietly relieved it escaped that fate. Small blue sparks fly off its skin as its fingers glow…

Across a vast ocean and a great expanse of land, a trainer sometimes called a hero looks up at a massive black dragon. A low rumble, like distant thunder, reverberates in the dragon’s throat as it turns its gaze to the sky, the powerful generator on its tail spinning, spinning, spinning, blue electricity discharging dangerously close to its chosen one. The trainer glances at it, curious, having not commanded any attack just now, and tentatively presses a hand against the dragon’s black scales.

In Celestic Town, too, even those still curled up in their beds feel the thunder rumbling through the town. In the town’s centre itself, all eyes are now on Allitersonance. The blue sparks grow into small arcs of electricity leaping from its fur, and more and more arcs join them until a brilliant aura of electricity, many times larger than Allitersonance itself, surrounds it. Nanasa can only look on in terror as Allitersonance leaps toward it and slams into her with all its might. The electricity shoots through her, the internal pain worse than the pattern of burns across her skin, and when it fades, she can only stare up at the abra looming over her.

It doesn’t open its eyes much, Nanasa notes blearily, but she was certain that its eyes weren’t red.

Still—she has more important things to worry about. Like the realisation that she suddenly can’t move. It’s worse than what she observed in Allitersonance’s jerky movements, or even when Ashglade was struggling to move his fingers. She can’t move anything, and whatever she can feel is merely pain.

Ashglade can only be glad that attack didn’t hit him. It’s obviously bad enough on Nanasa; how much more would it hurt him, with how sensitive he is to an electric shock? And yes, he knows that it’s an event Allitersonance probably won’t repeat, but he can’t help but feel the abra is suddenly a prime target. He flaps his wings and takes off into the air, building up a familiar golden aura as he spirals higher and higher. Then he dives at Allitersonance, but shifts direction last second to just kick the abra in the chest as he flies past. The aura fades, and he lands on the other side of the fissure.

The referee points at the fissure with its baton, smirking at the damage, and Pathos recalls his togepi.

Round Four

Beyonce lunges at Nanasa and envelops her in a tight hug, her fingers digging in deep enough to leave minor bruises. Nanasa’s muscles are too locked up to successfully protest, so she’s left at the mercy of the drowzee, unable to even squirm.

Exposition’s eyes gleam—quite literally, but most likely on purpose. A bucket of gems is exactly the treat she desires. Yes. She can already taste them. And after two battles like this, with all the success she’s managed, it’s exactly what she deserves. And she’ll prove it, too, she decides as she waggles her fingers. Dirt bared by the fissure, along with wood chips, small stones, and grass, are torn into the air, as are Beyonce and Nanasa. Beyonce releases Nanasa and lands gracelessly on her butt. Fortunately, she thinks, it was a wind pushing her away from the fissure.

Glowing white incisors grow in Allitersonance’s mouth, which opens so wide its jaw must be dislocated. It lunges at Nanasa and tears its fangs into her, ripping a scream from her throat. But that’s not all. Unexpectedly, she bursts into tears, and Allitersonance—fangs gone, though blood still dripping from its mouth—gives her a stricken look. As it watches her bleed and cry, it finds it doesn’t know how to react. It’s… it’s just a battle, and that attack should hurt, yes, with the amount of energy it put into it, but they’re pokémon. She’s a meditite, too, allegedly capable of accepting a great load of suffering without even flinching. She can’t cry!

Beyonce, too, is giving Nanasa an odd look, so she’s not ready for the third weaponised hug of this battle. Ashglade wraps his arms around her middle and squeezes, but unlike the last two hugs, he squeezes tighter and tighter until it actually hurts.

Beyonce forces energy into a bright orange ball held between her hands. The others, too locked up to move easily, aren’t a major concern, really, and she’s pretty sure she can hit whomever she likes. But that won’t be Exposition, of course. It probably wouldn’t even work, like every other attack she’s used.

Exposition waggles her fingers again, a wide grin still on her face as she watches her fingers glow. It would be especially great if she could ruin whatever Beyonce is doing, and make it blow up in her face. But the smile is quickly wiped off when nothing happens. That’s impossible, surely. “Do nothing” is not a valid move as far as a metronome should be concerned, no more than “eat your enemy” or “phase”, and yet here she is, doing nothing, instead of something awesome like… uh… uh… she’s pretty sure she did something amazing before. She did, didn’t she? Exactly. But she can’t remember what, and now that she thinks about it, she can’t remember much of the battle at all.

Beyonce looses a brilliant orange beam that slams into Ashglade, hurling him back and plopping him on the ground. He’s left locked in an awkward position, unable to move so he can at least relax on the grass, and shares a sorry glance with Nanasa. Allitersonance, though, doesn’t suffer such luck, and it waves a hand lazily in the air. Water in distant ponds stir and churns, but Allitersonance can find no water close enough to truly trap the sableye, or any other opponent, and it drops its hand with an irritated frown.

Beyonce grins at Ashglade. Yet more energy surges through her, as much as last time, and doesn’t Ashglade remember how much that hurt? Orange energy leaps from her hands once more, but rather than forming into a ball, it wraps around her, blazing like fire. She roars and lunges at him.

Exposition leaps at Allitersonance and gives it two quick punches, but Allitersonance barely pays attention, instead watching Beyonce leap into the air. But Ashglade flinches, and the shiny stone atop his head catches the sunlight just so, bright enough to pierce Beyonce’s burning aura. Beyonce squints and pulls her eyes away from the light, just as she makes the leap.

It’s a mistake, she learns the instant she impacts with nothing but dirt.

Allitersonance may have been unable to trap Exposition with water last time, but this time its chosen weapon is all around them, and is more solid, besides. The blades of grass around Exposition’s feet wiggle and abruptly grow, wrapping around her leg. Exposition yanks her leg back in alarm, trying to step away, but the grass pulls just as hard, and she falls onto her back. Nanasa struggles against her defiant muscles, but once again can do nothing.

Ashglade’s got a little more luck, though, and stomps hard on Beyonce’s leg as she pushes herself up. Beyonce grunts, but, having quite a bit more weight than a togetic, thinks that it shouldn’t hurt as much as it does. Damn metronome.

Round Five

Exposition leaps at Allitersonance and pounds on its sides and limbs, especially where Ashglade had landed on it once before. It can’t be paralysed now, Exposition declares. They’re in the middle of a battle! So why doesn’t she just loosen up those muscles again for it, hm? When satisfied, she backs off, eyes glittering.

Allitersonance grumbles under its breath, but when it attempts to lift its arms, it finds that everything is indeed much easier to move. Of course, the cotton’s still hindering it somewhat, but it can deal with that later. It waggles its fingers with complete ease, and a hard shell grows around its back. It ducks in its head. Armour isn’t really what it was going for, but it’ll do. Meanwhile, Beyonce thrusts her hands forward and looses a blast of wind at Nanasa. Nanasa endures the blast with merely a blink, though the grass and dirt before it is shredded. Nanasa follows up with her own metronome, eyes closed. With every emotion she holds in her heart, with everything she usually represses, with every ounce of hatred, she makes a single, terrible wish.

Beyonce narrows her eyes. Something about that twigs her instincts, a warning of some sort, but she doesn’t really know why. But the slight paranoia is drowned out by sudden alarm, and she looks over at a glowing Ashglade, eyes widening.

Ashglade glances down at his glowing paws. He can feel the power building up, he notices, as though it’s building up pressure more slowly than any other move. But it’s not quite right. It’s not being directed out his mouth or hands or only covering the outside of his body, like energy usually does. It’s not even really concentrated anywhere. The energy is building up all over his body, under his skin, rising in pressure and burning and pushing and he swears he’s going to split apart and

… it hurts.

Beyonce dives behind Allitersonance—just in time, as it turns out. Everything is drowned out in a flash of white and a loud bang. But it’s the wave of pure force that slams into everyone and throws the pokémon back and kicks dirt and grass into the air.

The referee grumbles and wipes its glasses off on its shirt before assessing the damage. This time, at least, it was able to get to the referee’s baton in time to prevent any of the humans from getting hurt, though its ears are still ringing. It smirks and assesses the damage. Unfortunately, there isn’t much property to damage, and the people are still indoors, though some distant windows have shattered. The trainers are simply covered in dust, but otherwise, aren’t even scratched. The mangled, charred togetic barely receives a glance, as not much more is needed. Exposition, of course, is perfectly fine, thought she too is wiping dust off her eyes. Beyonce and Allitersonance aren’t far from each other, and Beyonce’s the first to move, groaning and picking herself up. Her bruises and burns are quite severe, but she’s still fully capable of putting up a fight. Allitersonance, though, doesn’t move at all, and its artificial shell has totally shattered. But the abra isn’t the only pokémon rendered unconscious from the force of the explosion; on the other side of Ashglade’s body, Nanasa lies sprawled on the grass.

Pathos frowns and recalls his abra. Windyragon is a little slower in recalling both of her pokémon, but they, too, return safely to their poké balls.

Exposition and Beyonce, the only pokémon left on the field, stare at each other for a long moment, sizing each other up. Beyonce, well—she’s in much worse shape than Exposition is, even after her attempt at avoiding the full force of the explosion, and they both know it. A wide grin spreads across Exposition’s face. Beyonce just meets her leer with a grim expression. Sure, Beyonce might have more injuries, but this is a metronome battle, and she’s still got a chance to win.

Exposition’s fingers waggle from side to side, her grin widening. A tick-tock pattern establishes itself in her head, and she follows it faithfully, letting the pattern guide the movements she needs to rip a little hole in the universe. With every waggle, her fingers glow a little brighter, the residue of energy created by tearing into the very fabric of reality itself. Not for the first time, a localised warp in reality forms around her hands and flows through her entire body, brimming with potential. When the universe itself breaks—space and time and even alternate dimensions bending, if only a little, to a single pokémon’s will—anything can happen.

Sometimes, however, reality burps up something completely ineffectual. Like now. Exposition hops, the grin still stretched across her face, but her glee fades when she realises this is all that is going to happen.

Beyonce chuckles. Yes. A few more of those, and perhaps she can win this, after all. Her own attack is far more substantial; silver coats her hands, and she raises them to the sun and angles her hands just so. A brilliant beam of sunlight bounces off her hand and into Exposition’s eyes. The sableye shrieks and covers her eyes—it’s never hurt this much before—but her hands are far too small to block all the light.

Beyonce smiles a little. She had, admittedly, been concerned that she wouldn’t manage anything at all, since she hasn’t had the best of luck targeting Exposition, but it looks like the gods sometimes are on her side, after all. Exposition ignores her smug expression and leaps at her, striking her with both palms. But it barely hurts, even in Beyonce’s weakened state, and even if it did, she’d endure it anyway. For her trainer’s sake. She thinks about how much she loves her trainer, who has guided her this far, and tries to throw all that emotion behind her punch, but comes up short. Okay, she does like her trainer, but she hasn’t really received much (any) guidance in this battle, and most of her attacks still have failed. But then, she realises with a little bitterness, even if her heart was filled to bursting with love, it would have amounted to nothing. Her hand slides through Exposition, and when she removes her hand, the sableye’s abdomen reforms.

The darkening sky perfectly matches Beyonce’s mood, though rather than clouds rolling in, it seems instead that night is coming early. Far too early, in fact, given that it has just passed, and for a moment the trainers have to wonder if the battle hasn’t just taken that long. But no—it’s not sunset, either. A black shroud merely covers the sky, dimming even the sun so it shines less brightly than the moon, and with the sun so dimmed, the distant stars become clearly visible. Here in Celestic Town, away from all the artificial lights of Hearthome or other cities, every star shines beautifully.

… only, that’s not quite the case.

Instinct suddenly grips Beyonce around the heart, not unlike fear, and she looks up in time to see a silver beam bear down on the little town. It doesn’t quite strike her, however, its angle being just slightly off, and instead shoots past her and into the painting of Dialga on the rock wall. Another beam tears through the manor above the cave (at this, the Elder gives a desperate cry, ignored by the participants of the battle), and yet another pierces the little hut that passes for a poké mart in Celestic Town. The fourth spears the pokémon centre.

But Beyonce has no time to care about that. She dives out of the way, but she’s not quite fast enough, and she gets a first-hand taste of the fury of an ancient pokémon, a blast of energy that burns and pierces all at once. Around her, more lances of energy fall upon the town like rain, tearing through dirt and leaving the craters coated in steel. Even pure rock—the roof of the ancient cave the people of Celestic Town hold dear—cannot stand up to the assault, and though the cave painting itself is yet untouched, the destruction of the roof lets in the elements, leaving it vulnerable to erosion. Such is the power of the purest kind of a curse, one derived from nothing but a wish for total destruction—even if such hatred only ever filled a pokémon by pure chance.

And finally, finally, everything is destroyed… except the trainers, Exposition, and Beyonce. The latter groans and struggles to stand, but she does manage, and she gives Exposition a cool stare. Even the power of the gods won’t take her down.

Exposition just leers at her. Fine, then. She’ll finish the job herself.

Battlefield:
- The shrine has been swallowed up by a massive fissure that splits Celestic Town nearly to Route 211.
- A small crater lies near the fissure.
- The ground is torn and every building is full of holes, bodies, and fear.

Notes:
- Ashglade’s explosion KO’d himself, Allitersonance, and Nanasa. Exposition was immune. Explosion also scored a critical hit on Allitersonance.
- Arm thrust struck twice.
- Beyonce’s survival ruined the perfect ending to this round! Such is metronome.

Round Six

… this is it, Exposition thinks. It shouldn’t be long until her victory, now. Her victory alone, because only she could stand up to the force of that explosion. She chews the sticky glob in her mouth, musing. Well, as long as she doesn’t splash again—but even if she does, she’s sure, that just means Beyonce will exhaust herself, since while they’re both tired, that little hop cost little.

Exposition spits out the glob, which unfurls into a stronger, stickier web than the strings gluing Exposition’s limbs together, at Beyonce’s feet. The web hardens almost immediately, and while Beyonce barely manages to pull one leg out of the way in time, she finds her other leg irreparably stuck to the ground. Though she tries to pull, it’s futile; the web isn’t elastic enough to even allow her to take more than a step in any direction, though she is somewhat capable of turning. Exposition watches her struggles with a grin (revenge!), and Beyonce narrows her eyes. It doesn’t really matter—Exposition’s still within range of being touched, and not all attacks require her to punch the smug ghost in the face, either. She glances down at her hands, her palms facing each other, and the little fireball growing between them. Like this.

She tosses the ball at Exposition, fully expecting the sableye’s screech of pain, but not at all expecting what comes next. With a massive bang! that triggers her memory, the ball explodes, sending the sableye flying as well as slamming the shockwave into her face. Fortunately, it’s not nearly as powerful as the previous explosion, but it does nothing to help her bruises and sore bones.

Exposition picks herself up where she lands, then pauses to examine her unexpected mobility. Could it be—? Yes! The flames have apparently burned off that annoying string. Bits of string still dangle from her skin, but they hardly matter. She quickly scans the area for mud, but with the nearest ponds being outside the crater, there’s little point in that. Instead, she sticks her hand in the next-best substitute, the dirt by her feet, and flings it into Beyonce’s eyes. The clumps don’t stick together quite as well as mud would, but Beyonce flinches anyway. It burns.

Beyonce can’t wipe at her eyes forever, though, and she’s made of tougher stuff than a human. She can live with it a while, even if her eyes keep watering. She makes a fist. Frost forms on her knuckles, and she lunges at Explosition, throwing her fist forward. The webbing on her leg clings tight, though, and Beyonce lets out a whuff of air and nearly falls onto her stomach.

Not that Exposition’s much happier. Beyonce could’ve been unconscious by now. Still, she feels power building within her, something glittery and light, but it’s power nonetheless. Silvery spirits materialise in the air around her, and at Exposition’s command, they rush Beyonce, tearing and slamming into her as they fly past. But they vanish quickly, and when they do, Beyonce’s still standing, to Exposition’s exasperation.

Beyonce waggles her own fingers, then narrows her eyes to see what Exposition’s doing. She’ll be ready to launch an attack any second now, as soon as the sableye attacks, and won’t that be fun? It takes her a second to recognise the intrusion of metronome-born thoughts into her mind, and she shoves them away, irritated. It’s too late for that now.

It’s a wasted chance, too—she’s not going to last much longer. But Beyonce smirks, anyway. If Exposition wants a victory, she’s going to have to work for it—and perhaps she’ll work herself into exhaustion after all.

Notes:
- Flame burst’s splash damage hit Beyonce because they were still in contact range. However, the heat undid the speed drop from icy wind and destroyed the spider web such that it was possible to escape, as well as incinerating string shot.
- Ice punch missed since Beyonce couldn’t reach Exposition.
- Sucker punch failed.
- Mud-slap failed due to the lack of substantial mud. However, it acted as sand-attack instead, reducing accuracy.
- For the sake of consistency (and not because I pre-did anything), damage is calculated using evolutionary stage instead of experience.
