Arena: Mt. Chimney/Jagged Pass

This battle takes place on both routes; description can be found here and here. Basically, it's a rocky terrain; ashen filled grass can be found on the Jagged Pass, where the battle starts. The trees and such are also covered with soot, and there is little to no water unless provided with a move like rain dance.

Speaking of soot, doesn't there have to be side effects from battling and breathing in volcanic ash? Why yes! Spending time in the burnt up grass or doing other things (determined at ref's discretion) can cause a number of side effects. There's about a 25% chance of it occuring when you do such dangerous things, and the effects include but are not limited to:

A 25% chance of getting lightly confused.
A 20% chance of getting lightly poisoned.
A 15% chance of getting mildly confused.
A 15% chance of getting mildly poisoned.
A 10% chance of wasting an action coughing (like a flinch).
A 10% chance of rustling up the ash and smoke, causing the effect of smokescreen upon all pokemon.
A 5% chance of getting both mildly confused and lightly poisoned.

Up at the volcano, where the problematic substance is given off, the chance of such things happening is a flat 25% each round. If it is determined that it will occur to a pokemon, the action in which it will happen is randomized.

Pokemon native to Hoenn use 1% less energy per action, unless that would make the energy cost of a move zero. Pokemon found on the Jagged Pass use 2% less energy per action (this does not stack with the Hoenn bonus and has the same rules) and have the chances of being affected by the ash lowered to 15%. Poison type pokemon have the same 15% chance of being affected as the Jagged Pass pokemon; it's a different type of poison than the typical venomous kind and therefore a pokemon can be both ash poisoned and normal poisoned. They act the same, however.

Other: Only fully unevolved pokemon may participate; single stage lines are banned.

Let's go with Constantine. Thanks for taking this blazhy!

Hm, I could try to choose something strategically and worry about that, but honestly this was meant as a simple, fun battle and with all the fussing I've been doing over the tournament I think I'd rather just relax. So, out goes Malice!

I think it'd be pretty nice if we just start out simple, Malice; just live up to your name and begin with a will-o-wisp. If Constantine does something where your attack can't hit or would be made ineffective (especially if it would be shot back at you!), calm mind.

Then you should hex the piplup twice. If you can't or shouldn't hit him (it'd be pointless due to some sort of trickery, he's using bide, etc.) use calm mind. If you couldn't make your status hit the first time but can still attack on the second or third action, shadow ball.

If at any point Constantine tries to status you and you can just fly/float out of the way without messing with your attack, please do us a favor and just dodge it that way. It'd be a pain to mess around with that.

Thanks for taking this, blazhy~!

Alright, Constantine, let's try and get you those 3 exp points! Start off with Aqua Ring. Hopefully you won't be that much slower than the Shuppet and you can generate it before the Will-O-Wisp gets to you. Try and make it block the attack. Then try a Swagger, which as it is mostly sound based should not be able to be dodged without moving quite far away. Then finish with Hydro Pump for good measure.

Aqua Ring ~ Swagger ~ Hydro Pump

I was this close to ordering Yawn instead of Swagger.

Asberians rarely visited Hoenn – they had access to all Hoenn Pokemon, after all – so the battlers and referee decided to go for a short tour before arriving at the predetermined arena. They met up in the small Lavaridge Town nearby. When everyone was present, the referee marched off, beckoning with her tail to follow. Her steps were sure and she navigated the area without hesitation, as if she had been here already. Little did the trainers know that the referee had, indeed, visited the Jagged Pass and the surrounding region: she had taken the cable car and traversed the pass many times, fuming as she failed to leap the tricky ledges in the proper places to snag that last elusive item.

The Asberians rode the cable car to Mt. Chimney’s summit. The ride was fairly long and really not that interesting; falling ash only occupied you for so long. Upon stepping out of the car, Mai and Denryu were both seized by coughing fits as they inhaled ash. Both came to the conclusion that leaving the volcano’s summit was the best course of action, and they all but ran towards Jagged Pass, an uneven hike down the mountain’s side.

At last they were roughly in the middle of the pass. The ash did not fall so thickly there, and they regained their breath as the referee came stomping down. Being mechanical, she was not bothered by the ash at all. There was a short wait as the trainers finished coughing and decided on which Pokemon to send out. Mai made the first move: a Pokemon that resembled a cloth puppet materialized from white light. Malice the Shuppet floated comfortably above the ash-coated grass. Meanwhile, Constantine the Piplup was practically up to his chest in the brush, and gave a little squeak as soot invaded his nose.

Spurred on by the urgency of his trainer’s commands, Constantine opened his mouth and let a small stream of liquid dribble out. At the same time, Malice opened her own maw and plucked a mote of ghostly fire from the core of her ghostly being. As Constantine struggled with his very limited knowledge of healing skills, the Will-o-Wisp drifted lazily through the air, swerving this way and that. Before the Piplup could construct a wall of water to protect him from the attack, the little flame struck him square in the chest. He squealed in pain – the Will-o-Wisp was unusually hot and had easily burned his feathers to scorch the sensitive skin underneath.

Even if he had not prevented the burn, Constantine knew that his next technique would still relieve it. Again he produced a thin stream of water and manipulated it, infusing it with slight healing properties. Then he flattened it into a paper-thin curtain. As the water swirled around him, soothing droplets splashed onto his body, cooling the burned flesh.

Malice chuckled at Constantine’s futile attempts. Though the burn was pretty much nullified by the Aqua Ring, it served another purpose. The Shuppet began to dance to an ominous, dangerous rhythm while chanting in an ancient language. She spoke in harsh sounds – words of suffering and woe, no doubt. Constantine felt positively ill as a powerful presence surrounded him, wracking him with a throbbing pain. As if in response, the burn on his chest glowed red and the pain intensified, leaving the penguin gasping.

Constantine recovered fairly quickly. He shot a glare at his opponent, then puffed his chest, lifted his chin, and put his flippers on his hips. Arrogance rolled off the Piplup in waves. You wish you were this awesome, Constantine crowed, strutting back and forth, practically sparkling as the Aqua Ring threw droplets into the air. He stifled a cough as he stirred up dust from the grass. Burns don’t do nothing to me, nope. Try harder! Malice scowled. What a bigheaded bird; she’d seen him practically wail over a little Hex. Irrational anger at Constantine’s display clouded Malice’s judgment and her vision was swallowed by red.

Eager to prove that Constantine’s display was a false show, Malice put more energy into her dark chant… whoops, maybe too much. The Shuppet failed to notice the rock wall next to her and slammed into it while swinging zealously from side to side. She gave a grunt of shock and shook her head to clear it. Just as Malice had recovered her bearings, a veritable storm of water slammed into her, blasting her across the pass to smash into the trunk of a tree. There she was held for a few seconds, pinned by the sheer pressure of the torrent, until Constantine’s internal water sac was depleted. The little penguin was gasping, but on his face was a smug grin. Try harder.

Alright, good work Constantine!

Now, start off with Rain Dance. If you're taunted, then try a Scald. Then Scald the next action, unless you were Taunted the first and Tormented the second, then just use Hydro Pump. Finish with a Chill, or Scald if you're Taunted, or if you're Tormented and you used Hydro Pump last action. If you used Scald on the last action and are Tormented, then use Hydro Pump.

That's a bit confusing. Sorry if it's difficult to understand.

First things first, Malice! Calm mind up, try to clear your head about this whole annoying piplup deal. Then, exploit the rain dance in your own way--thunder. Do that twice. If the rain is gone or was never there, try a shadow ball.

Malice was quite dizzy with the headache that the wall had so generously given to her, so she decided to take a break and clear her mind. Constantine was still going to have his little fried tail served to him on a platter… Malice just needed some time to prepare. A serene look settled on the Shuppet’s face as she attempted to purge her mind of all distractions. Now focused, her mental powers were sharpened, making them even deadlier weapons. When she opened her eyes, her vision was not as distorted, and her nausea was nearly gone.

Meanwhile, Constantine was also playing the set-up game. The penguin was dancing, feet barely rustling the grass as he turned in slow circles with flippers raised beseechingly to the skies. A chant of growth and nurturing rain and a prayer to Kyogre later, the sky was swallowed with thick grey clouds that unleashed sheets of fat raindrops. The rain beat against Constantine in a soothing rhythm and he sighed as the cold water soothed his burn.

It seemed that the Piplup had forgotten a rule of storms: as they bring rain, so they bring thunder. Malice cackled as she focused on the ominous crackling in the clouds, shifting electrons and urging them to leap to the ground. The heavens obeyed. Constantine shrieked as a great fork of lightning was thrown to the earth, or more accurately onto his head. Electricity flowed into his body, scorching nerves and clutching at muscles, causing him to spasm painfully at random, another scream sticking in his throat. At last the last traces of electricity left Constantine. The poor Piplup was lying on the ground, stunned, his Aqua Ring doing little to alleviate the pain.

After a moment, Constantine managed to struggle to a sitting position. He didn’t trust his feet to support him yet, as they felt wobbly with pain. He didn’t need his feet for his next move, though. The Piplup’s mouth filled with water, his cheeks bulging comically and a few drops trickling down his chin as he tried to contain as much liquid in his mouth as possible. What happened next was a mystery: whether Constantine’s mouth suddenly heated up to boiling temperatures, or a strange chemical reaction took place, no-one knew. The water that shot out of Constantine’s mouth, while not as devastating as the Hydro Pump, was bubbling with heat. When it touched Malice’s body, there was a sizzling sound, and the Shuppet shrieked. Angrily, she shook off the water and glanced worriedly at the burned skin. Small blisters were forming and the cloth was glowing a faint red. The raindrops, though cold, only seemed to worsen Malice’s pain.

Quite irritated now, Malice sought help from the stormclouds again. Constantine felt a tingling in the air, immediately followed by another bolt of lightning. Again, sheer power coursed through the Piplup’s body, too much for the little Pokemon to contain. The hated electricity set nerves alight with fire, and the immense voltage prevented him from screaming in pain or even moving at all. Constantine was left on the ground, twitching. This time, his muscles were not lucky enough to escape unscathed from the fury of the Thunder.

Constantine strained to move into a more comfortable position, but he still could not move. Groaning in agony, he gave up and just attempted to relax in his current predicament. It was not nearly as calming as a normal Chill would have been: his body still twitched and spasmed at random. He only hoped that taking a break would remove the paralysis earlier.

Hex three times. If Constantine does something where your attack can't hit him or your attack would be ineffective use calm mind; also do this if he tries to confuse you or do anything emotional (if it would help). Also do that if he's using bide. If there's a tricky status-thing you can fly out of the way of please do that; try not to disrupt your attack though.

More self-assured now, Malice recited hideous incantations quickly and confidently. The power of ancient, vile curses swirled in the air around her, tied to her by her chanting, waiting for a command. Malice jerked her head towards Constantine, and the curses immediately rushed to the Piplup, eagerly surrounding him and overloading his body with corrosive ghost-type energy. Constantine yelped as a dull pain throbbed through his entire being, aggravating the sting of his burn and causing paralysis to yank harshly at his muscles.

Though Constantine was starting to flag from his injuries, he was not about to take the attacks sitting down. He struggled to his feet, fighting against his unresponsive feet, then braced himself against the ground and gave his water sac a sharp squeeze. A staggering amount of water immediately gushed out of his jaws. Malice was blasted away by the torrent, the sheer force making each droplet’s impact sting. This time, Malice managed to wiggle out of the Hydro Pump, though the attack was almost spent anyway. The Shuppet looked at herself and scowled. She was totally soaked, her cloth-like body heavy with moisture.

Eager to take revenge, Malice began to chant once more, directing foul spirits towards her opponent so they could wreak havoc on his spirit, which was weakened by burns and paralysis. Constantine felt the familiar awful feeling descend upon him once more; then abruptly, it felt like a giant hand had seized him and was crushing him slowly. His paralysis worsened, gripping his throat and lungs so that he could scarcely breathe.

By now Constantine was in a dire state, about to keel over from the repeated Hexes and Thunders he had been subject to. His pitiful Aqua Ring hardly helped at all. In response to the emergency, the true power of the water-type was unlocked within the Piplup, manifesting as a deep blue aura around him.

When Constantine was freed from the Hex, he was still having trouble moving. It took a massive effort for him to squeeze his water sac hard enough for a second Hydro Pump, but the effort was well worth it: the blue aura seemed to lend its strength to the stream of water, enhancing its pressure and deadliness. Malice barely had time to shriek before the water reached her. She felt like she was hit by a truck. A moment later, another impact came as the Shuppet was slammed against a rock wall. There she was pinned mercilessly, doused with a high-pressure jet of liquid that made her body scream in protest. The rain overhead, though gentle, somehow only worsened the pain until it was nearly intolerable.

At last Constantine’s entire water sac was emptied. The Hydro Pump dwindled to a mere trickle and Malice was allowed to drift to the ground, dazed. It took the Shuppet a moment to collect her bearings; then, desperate to avoid taking another hit like that, she immediately began casting another curse on Constantine. Hopefully it would drain the rest of his vitality. Unfortunately, Malice had overestimated Constantine’s stamina. Though the Piplup was so weak he could barely whimper, he somehow managed to stay on his feet. Bravely, Constantine squeezed his eyes shut and endured the Hex.

Malice could not keep her attack going forever, and as soon as Constantine felt the Hex fading away, he took a menacing step forward, ready to unleash a final torrent of water that would end the match – only to fall flat on his face as his muscles clenched in rebellion. His eyes widened in panic and disbelief – now, of all times? Meanwhile, Malice breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Pre-emptive good games were exchanged, then commands given… and Malice’s face twisted in confusion. Disable Brine? When had Brine ever been used? Maybe that was what Constantine was going to use. Maybe she should wait…

Indeed, Constantine’s next move was to spit litres of horribly salty water at Malice. The pouring rain only added to the sheer volume. Malice screamed in terrible pain as she was drenched, the salt seeking out burns to rub against and scratches to sink into. The water seemed to be charged with some mysterious energy, as it packed a great deal of power; it was even more potent than the previous Hydro Pumps. Never before had Malice felt such agony. Desperately the Shuppet tried to hold out, but the torrent showed no signs of letting up.

At last Constantine’s internal water supplies were completely exhausted. Malice floated there, head bowed, eyes squeezed shut. For a moment it seemed that the shuddering Shuppet would keep battling on sheer willpower, but her body simply could not keep out. With a final sigh, Malice drifted slowly to the ground.

Final notes
Malice fainted on the first action.
For those who are curious, Brine did about 29% damage. Thankfully Negrek should nerf Torrent soon. That’s some ridiculous damage.

The battered and exhausted Constantine stood there, stupefied. Did he just win? He just won! Denryu gave a whoop of joy and scooped the little penguin into his arms, and the two spun around a few times, overcome with the joy of unexpected victory. Meanwhile, Mai withdrew her own Pokemon and offered her congratulations. When Denryu and Constantine calmed down and the Piplup was returned to his Pokeball, everyone gathered around the referee who was leaning against a tree a little ways off. The trainers coughed as their feet stirred up the ash. Denryu turned a faint shade of purple as soot was sucked into his lungs.

Wordlessly, the referee handed Denryu an Antidote, then drew out some bills hidden amongst her stiff feathers. After prizes were distributed, a League-owned Abra appeared to Teleport them back to the meteor-ridden Asber, where all three parties awaited their turn to beat up the legendaries darkening the sky.

The battle is over and Denryu is the winner. He gets $8 for winning. Constantine gets 3 EXP.
Mai gets $3, and Malice gets 1 EXP.
I get $5 for reffing.

... Oops I am an idiot. Oh well. All the same~

(This is why I don't attempt brute force. But then again it was the disable that did me in.)

This was fun!

Wow, yay I guess. Sorry Mai, I really shouldn't have won this. Though I am curious to see how you perform in a real competitive battle. Maybe I'll see you in the tournament later on (if I get out of the mess I'm currently in).

Thanks again for reffing, blazhy.

To be honest I'm not exactly sure how I perform in a real competitive battle either. ^_^;; It's more like... okay team let's try to win this! With strategy, weirdly effective ideas and math! I plot sometimes too. It'd be nice to have a rematch for the Championship next round.

Pffft if I cannot read then I deserve to lose. Although it's a good thing that I'm making all my stupid mistakes where they aren't necessarily critical; sure it may have been to this battle but the Contests and Tournaments forum usually takes priority.

Also I am considering the idea that this happened because I was using a ghost type. I almost always overlook something/try to pretend my loopholes don't exist when I'm using a ghost type.
