Default [15] Grass King vs pathos (ref: The Omskivar)

1 vs 1
DQ: 5 days
Damage Cap: 35%
Banned/Restricted Moves: OHKOs, Pain Split, moves that KO the user; direct recovery is restricted to 1 use in the match, and Chills are restricted to 5 uses
Arena: Santalune City

Like an emerald in the rough, this town in the center-south of Kalos glows verdant with lush grass and forest green roofs mottled with rustic pavement and ancient stone walls. The battle begins in the circular fountain plaza at the very center of the city, from which most else can be seen, including the majestic Trainer's School right across, the great Bug-Type Gym in the distance, and the tables of several small cafés and restaurants in the fountain area, although most seem dwarfed by comparison to the notable establishment atop a hill nearby.

For this round of the tournament, each trainer's Pokémon will be wearing a specified hat from the Santalune Boutique. Each hat grants its wearer the ability to use certain moves (usually three), and often adds an Ability to the wearer's current Abilities as well. After five rounds, the currently worn hats will be replaced by another set of two hats, again chosen at random. The hats' descriptions and effects are as follows:
  • Bamboo Sprig Hat: A round cap that closely resembles Pangoro, bringing about an aloof sense of menace for the hat seeker that's not to be messed with. Grants the moves Sky Uppercut, Crunch, and Parting Shot, along with the Scrappy ability.
  • Boater: A nifty straw hat that keeps the head cool in sunshine and protected in the storm, perfect for weathering a long voyage. Grants the moves Rain Dance, Hurricane, and Tailwind, along with the Swift Swim ability.
  • Camo Cap: A beanie that blends right into the wilderness with its military-grade motif, complete with grenades and reinforcements, enabling its wearer to move in and out of cover -- or maybe their opponent just doesn't want to be seen with someone who actually wears camo. Grants the moves Egg Bomb, Night Slash, and Attack Order, along with the Sniper ability.
  • Exotic Cap: A repurposed casquette with bold patterns, for those who aim to make an unusual fashion statement and also don't mind looking like they have a toadstool for a head. Grants the moves Hex, Venom Drench, and Infestation, along with the ability Effect Spore.
  • Fedora: A distinctive kind of hat that has been through many associations in pop culture, and we're pretending for our own sake that the most recent one is Indiana Jones. Grants the moves Rock Slide, Bulldoze, and Power Whip, along with the ability Sand Rush.
  • Felt Hat: A porkpie hat famously worn by a trainer that Professor Sycamore placed all of his faith in. Grants the moves Spiky Shield, Mystical Fire, and Water Shuriken.
  • Knit Cap: A woolly, tight-fitting beanie with which one can not only keep warm, but thrive in the cold. Grants the moves Blaze Kick, Frost Breath, and Hail, along with the ability Ice Body.
  • Logo Cap: A snapback with a readily recognizable sigil that's associated with the Kalos Pokémon League. Grants the moves Gyro Ball, Dragon Tail, Flame Charge, and Clamp.
  • Sports Cap: A polyester cap for athletic types who want to sprint and make sparks fly when the sun is out. Grants the moves Quick Attack, Acrobatics, and Electro Ball, along with the ability Unburden.

pathos will be participating in this battle instead. Both him and Grass King should now adjust their active squads as they see fit for the occourance.

Espionage, you're up!

Let's go with a Knock Off, followed by a Shadow Ball and a Foul Play. If there are Double Team clones then use Aerial Ace. If slytherclaw protects then use Hone Claws.

Knock Off / Aerial Ace / Hone Claws ~ Shadow Ball / Aerial Ace / Hone Claws ~ Foul Play / Aerial Ace / Hone Claws

We'll take that Knock Off as an easy way of activating our Weakness Policy, slytherclaw, and Counter it. Then give him a Psychic, which should take him just around caps with those lefties, so finish with a Reflect.

Counter ~ Psychic ~ Reflect

Santalune, the "traditional city." The first stop on many a Pokemon journey, the small town was constantly making big noise with the bustle of new Trainers excitedly preparing for their Gym battle. Not only was there always a general hubbub in the streets, but more often than not there were at least two Pokemon battles between eager young Trainers--something about the pristine fountain in the center of town filled Pokemon with vigor and vitality.

After the destruction the Asber League had wrought upon Lumiose, it was hopefully the last place the authorities would look.

Grass King and The Omskivar waited patiently by the fountain. Eventually, Coloursfall strolled--wait a minute, that was pathos. Smirking, he pulled an envelope from his pocket and handed it to the referee. The Omskivar extracted a letter and scanned it quickly, mouthing the words to himself, then shrugged and handed pathos his envelope back before nodding to Grass King. The two Trainers walked a fair distance apart in the square, and The Omskivar signaled pathos to summon his Pokemon.

A bright flash of light lit the square, followed by scattered whispering as Slytherclaw the Alakazam straightened his back and stood tall. He glanced quickly at his surroundings, clutching in his left hand a tightly-rolled paper as well as a shining silver weapon. With a satisfied grunt, he raised his spoons in defiance as Grass King threw his own Pokeball after a moment's consideration.

Espionage the Kecleon burst forth, making excited clicking noises and darting her eyes in every direction (though rarely both in the same direction). She tasted the air with her tongue, matched her scales to the cobblestones and back--she was ready.

The Omskivar inhaled to blow his whistle, then made a pitiable fwooooot instead as he spat it out, having nearly forgotten to pass out hats! Snapping his fingers and hastily apologizing, he opened the trunk he had brought along. From this trunk, he selected a white cap with a Pokeball shield logo and tossed it to Espionage. The Kecleon smiled widely, then stuck the bit of miscellaneous food she was holding into her cheek, to free her hands to put her hat on. Once it sat snugly behind her crests, Espionage turned a bright shade of orange. She paused, then shook her head and changed to a redder orange. Hang on, that wasn't right either--

The Omskivar ignored this and dug another hat from the trunk, this time a gray fedora. Turning to frisbee-pass it to Slytherclaw, he gasped in surprise when the hat pulled his hands back into the trunk, and a black fedora floated silently to the Alakazam instead. It rested between the Psi Pokemon's ears as the referee, sighing, waved his flag.

Team Grass King

Espionage (F) @Leftovers/Logo Cap
Health: 100%
Energy: 100%
Status: Trying to find a more threatening color.

Team pathos

Slytherclaw (M) @Weakness Policy/Fedora
Health: 100%
Energy: 100%
Status: Feeling like an intimidating mobster.

Round 1

slytherclaw stepped backwards into a ready stance, motioning for Espionage to make a move. Shrugging, the Kecleon darted forward and struck viciously out at the hand holding slytherclaw's scroll. The wizened Pokemon braced himself, though he still grunted in pain as the Dark-type attack hit its mark, causing him to drop his scroll (and spoon, but that just hung in the air until he grabbed it back).

The mysterious item unrolled in the air, coming to rest face-up on the ground. At the bottom of all of the fine print was the shining handprint of a Kecleon. The paper rerolled itself and vanished, while slytherclaw laughed deeply. He felt...good. More powerful than he was a moment ago--and stronger, too! He drew his hand back, then gave Espionage a mighty SLAPP! across her scaly face.

Espionage's scales flickered an indistinct pattern as she gurgled, the attack lifting her into the air and slamming her onto her back. She hissed (as best she could, that attack left her winded), her crests and markings turning a bright red as the rest of her scales turned a shade of maroon. She jumped back to her feet, but never reached the ground--before she touched down, she halted suddenly in midair. Confused, she looked up and saw slytherclaw grinning as he held his injured-hand spoon outwards. The Alakazam brought his other spoon back, then jabbed it forward, and Espionage watched her opponent, and the ground, get farther and farther away.

She landed on her back at the feet of her Trainer, and her skin felt like it was on fire. Shaking herself wildly, the Kecleon swapped her angry maroon color for a dull pink one. The burning sensation stopped, and she glared at her opponent (with both eyes) before rearing her head back, then spitting a large black blob of energy at her foe. slytherclaw's eyes widened almost unnoticeably before the Shadow Ball hit him in the chest; he slid backward, wincing, then stepped forward and held his spoons out, eyes still closed.

A blue light popped into existence in front of him, then grew in size until it was a large translucent wall, white light streaking across it every ten seconds or so. Opening his eyes, slytherclaw gave another short grunt as he spread his arms, directing the light wall to furl around him and compress into a sphere. Espionage watched him, curiously, then decided to figure out what this wall was about.

The Kecleon broke out into a run, darting in a zigzag until she reached the barrier. She gave a mighty leap, and was pleased to find that she wasn't altogether stopped in her tracks--but she did feel herself slow down as she passed through the wall and grabbed slytherclaw's hand, swinging her body nimbly around his to bring his spoon thwack!ing into his face. She let go of her foe and soared back to stand in front of her Trainer, nibbling on her food as slytherclaw shook his head slightly, then stood tall once more. The Omskivar waved his flags, looking nervously at all the people watching. Apparently Alakazams and Kecleons weren't very common to see in Santalune.

Round 1 End

Team Grass King

Espionage (F) @Leftovers/Logo Cap
Health: 67%
Energy: 88%
EXP Bonus: 1%
Status: Loosening up. Psychic-typed.

Team pathos

Slytherclaw (M) @Weakness Policy/Fedora
Health: 65%
Energy: 78%
Status: Patient. +1 Atk, +1 Sp.Atk. Reflect active (4 more actions)

Calculations
Knock Off- 15% damage, 3% energy
Counter- 30% damage, 15% energy
Psychic- 18% damage, 5% energy
Shadow Ball- 13% damage, 4% energy
Foul Play- 8% damage, 5% energy
Reflect- 2% energy (1% usage, 1% upkeep)

Notes
-Knock Off does in fact trigger the held item before it's removed.
-Counter changed Espionage into a Fighting-type, and Psychic changed her into a Psychic-type.
-Psychic hit Espionage's cap (by a lot) but 2% was healed afterward by Leftovers.
-No Sp.Def drops or crits.
-Reflect will continue to cost 1% energy/action for its upkeep.
-Foul Play's damage was halved by Reflect.
-Foul Play hit slytherclaw's cap by 1%.
-pathos commands next.

Hmmm. I think we're gonna Knock Off those lefties. Then Drain Punch and Psycho Cut. If there are clones, Shock Wave, and if you can't hit for some other reason, such as Protect, try a Calm Mind. If she goes underground and tries to hide there, though, just follow her down and continue attacking her, if you can. If you can't, just stay up and Calm Mind.

Also, if she dares to try and attract you, and you can't attack her, just go ahead and Calm Mind until you can attack. I'm sure she won't mind - you are very handsome when you work on your mental prowess, that's why she fell in love with you to begin with, no?? Someone who doesn't give you the time to work on yourself isn't worth your time anyhow, I say.

Okay Espi, start off a Skill Swap to stay a Dark-type, then use a Counter. Finish off with a Toxic.

Skill Swap ~ Counter ~ Toxic

Also shouldn't Espi have regained 3% health last round?

She did, but she hit the damage cap on the second action, so the first action's Leftovers gain was essentially nullified.

-----

The next battery of commands was rent by the sound of an embarassing ringtone. "Uh, that's mine, I'll just..." The Omskivar just about half spoke and half whispered. From there, the trainers could only try at guessing the contents of the conversation from the referee's side of it, but his facial expressions and exhasperated reactions didn't seem to spell good news. In time, he wrapped up the call, then informed the contestants that he'd have to leave soon due to aggravating circumstances. The staff quickly got moving to arrange for a replacement, and the current referee stood around to keep things running just until that was done and dealt with. And so, the commands resumed and were shortly completed.

slytherclaw could quickly assess that his enemy had not, in fact, somehow readied defensive measures already. Without giving her the time to do so, he raced in and slammed both of his spoons earthward. Espionage braced herself for a blow, but it had not yet come -- instead, the psychic utensils were dug into the contents of her prized Leftovers bag. Before she could understand the plan, it was in motion, as the Alakazam uphove almost everything in the bag in a single, mighty scoop, having the tremendous pile slam its owner right in the face before it was flung up and away. A couple blocks away, an unfortunate passerby was smote by a descending pillar of garbage.

The townsfolk viewing the match were vocally disgusted by the move -- a chorus of disapproving interjections formed for a while. These locals do not tolerate littering. The evil of this move was even transparent in the visage of the Pokémon struck by it, as she had become pitch black with scarlet accents (along with the inevitable jagged red stripe around the midsection). She was just this close to pulling out a cig and rattling off an unaturally excessive cussfest, as she just seemed that edgy. Instead of doing that, she settled for firing an irisdescent, indigo-cream beam at her foe. It landed softly, almost as if it were simply phasing right through, and didn't seem to cause any damage; however, both battlers were soon engulfed in a similarly colored glow, which distorted rapidly. By the Skill Swap's conclusion, the light almost seemed to have taken on an Alakazam shape around the Kecleon's body, and vice-versa.

Still, slytherclaw had practically invented looking bad in this match, what with the fedora granting him a look squarely between a gangster and, well, a fedora guy. He had a creed to uphold, and it involved a shining fist swung right across the face, droplets of light scattering and pulling towards himself with the impact. His foe must have realized that, as she simply invited the blow without trying to defend herself. That, or she might just have taken the punch and the knockdown to give her opponent a surprise mid-fall sweep kick, flipping him right upside-down for a crash landing into his own hat.

When the Psi Pokémon rose again to his feet, he was different. He had taken on a furious brick-colored tone, and he was trying to pose like an old martial art master. He even began practicing some kicks against the air, although each motion released a flurry of unsubstantial magenta shockwaves. Such a masterful attack would have proven difficult to dodge... So Espionage didn't bother, and just sat there while the blades harmlessly bounced off her body.

Acting as bored as possible, Grass King's fighter slowly approached her enemy right through the continued attack, and then, she finally did it. She harvested a discarded cigarette and struck it alight with a flick of her claw. Then, she stuck it between her lips and held a pose for a bit, crossing her arms and leaning into the side of a nearby building, before pulling it out and spewing a nasty nicotine cloud right towards her opponent's face. This shockingly rude manouever was no match for the Alakazam's honed reflexes, however -- before he could be made to breathe in any of the venom, he covered his nose and sprinted away, narrowly averting a toxic fate.

Having just arrived to witness this last moment, the replacing referee couldn't help but comment: "story of my freaking life right there".

Okay Espi, lets go with an Aerial Ace, followed by an Ice Beam and finish up with a Drain Punch. If he Protects or you can't hit him for some reason, then push everything back an action and Chill.

Hrr. Let's Skill Swap while our reflect is still active. Then I think we'll Protect and then Encore that chill.

Oh, and if you can, during any action, try and go over to pick up those leftovers. None of your actions require tons of movement so if you need to take all three actions to sidle over to them, do so.

Arena: Santalune City
Quote:

The hats' descriptions and effects are as follows:
hat effects
Arena status: Unchanged.

-----

As the replacement referee settled in, another battery of commands was issued. Both Pokemon were battered, with obvious signs of fatigue all around -- the next moves could make or break the battle.

slytherclaw opened the procedures with a repeat and reversal of an earlier move: he fired a familiar indigo-cream ray from his outstretched spoons, revealing the morphed sillouettes that had formed at the end of the attack's usage in the previous round, only to undo their reshaping, such that, once again, an Alakazam's form surrounded the Alakazam and a Kecleon's form surrounded the Kecleon.

As soon as that move was concluded, Espionage sprung right into action, tossing aside the cigarette in her lips as she leapt and swung her claws downward. Her foe was ill prepared to defend himself from an aerial attack, but his imaterial shield was up to the task, severely slowing down the motion both as it came down and as it winded back up in immediate sequence.

Not about to leave himself so carelessly open to attack, particularly as the barrier protecting him faded away just as soon as it blocked its last blow, the Psi Pokemon covered himself within an impenetrable dome of green light. Recognizing the move for what it was, his enemy leaned against a nearby wall, remaining still and contemplative for a while.

She'd eventually notice that her opponent had been perfectly motionless even after he had dismissed his protection. Was she being challenged to a game of statue? She wouldn't stand for such a cocky invitation. She shifted only slightly to right herself before starting on a true demonstration of ability to remain still as if petrified. She refused to be bested in that regard.

No better way to make a battle really, really exciting, than by throwing in a game of statue.

Hum, are you sure alakazam shouldn't revert to its psychic type once it lost colour change?

Anyhow, we're gonna spend this round pretty simply. Drain Punch twice, then try a Charge Beam. If there are clones, sweep the beam around until you hit the real one, and if she protects/detects/is otherwise unhittable, just build up a Barrier.

Drain Punch x2 ~ Charge Beam / Barrier

Yep.

Also, late DQ warning for Grass King again. 48 hours from here.
