Arena: Skies over Azure Bay

The Azure Bay is a body of oceanic water at the northwestern limits of Kalos, near Route 12 and Coumarine City. Its vast blue of perdition is ocasionally broken by arrays of small isles that serve as guiding landmarks for the swimmer and the sailor alike. A shallow near the center of the channel contains a rocky pit that's thought to be associated with a legendary seafloor-dwelling Pokémon, and it is also said that even now, an energy that flows from that den beckons to powerful flying Pokémon that answer to the legendary's call when they become lost.

For this late bracket of the tournament, players will participate in a Sky Battle. By wearing the special suit of the Sky Trainer, the entrats will be able to remain airborne, miles up from the surface of the water and any land near it, where the clash will take place. Only flying/hovering Pokémon can enter a battle in such circumstances, as it's mandatory to remain aloft. Inherently flying/hovering Pokémon are able to stay in the air naturally and without cost, but consentually flying/hovering Pokémon will constantly expend energy as they make an effort to remain airborne. Either way, as any roost is entirely out of bounds, no Pokémon, inherent flier/hoverer or consentual flier/hoverer, will be able to roost properly, making it so each Chill will only restore half as much energy as would be regular. Moreover, in order to prevent plummeting accidents, no Pokémon can be put to sleep in this match, although other statues are as legal as usual, and moves that depend on the ground for their execution will tend to fail or be banned, while Nature Power will become Air Slash if ever used.

-----

As it turns out, the tournament battle between Noctowl and Mawile was not, in fact, a clash between a red-eyed owl and an ironbound critter of hidden jaws. Rather, those were the monikers chosen one each by two battling trainers in the late entry bracket of the Kalos Open. One might argue, however, that they were looking their least human for this fight, as they flew through the air in rather unusual gear, that gave them a sillouete more geometrical than organic.

And of course, both of them glared at their assigned referee, who had forgone the getup altogether in favour of his time-honored Aerodactyl mount. "What? I'm not the one who has to use my best flier for something else", he tried to explain, but words conveyed poorly in the given atmospheric conditions. Some sharp clearings of the throat were required before the rules could be officially relayed to the tournament participants.

From there, without further ado, Mawile sent out his chosen Pokemon for the unusual battle. It proceeded to generate a whole lot of ado as it lay perfectly catatonic in midair, taking its sweet time to fully boot up. After time uncounted in impatience, it finally gave off a relieving chime to indicate that it was up and running, but still, it would only move sluggishly for another amount of minutes yet. Noctowl was given the green light to send out then, and her pick for the Sky Battle was a diminutive cottonseed creature, fluffy yellow-white mane fluttering lazily in the air as the more animal-like part of the Pokemon hustled to enjoy the wide-open air and the speedy winds. Of course, on sight of the enemy, the burdened Porygon-Z started to lag even more brutally, as it ran the adequate programs to steel itself for combat. There was sighing all around, but, danger of blue screens or none, the signal was given for battle to begin.

Overflowing with zest, Aries hovered his way towards his foe, but his expermintal lunge would soon give him more information than he bargained for as he noticed himself being repelled from the general vicinity of his target. Miffed at this boring stuff, he floated back, then basked in the unobstructed sun for a while, letting it do its magic on his vegetable cells.

After a few minutes, peeking out with one eye, Whimsicott noticed that the broader shield was down. Now even more eager, he hover-leaped forth, wildly shaking his cotton mane and leaving yellow contrails in his wake. His mistake was perhaps not noticing that the enemy's more innermost shield was still up -- the cloud of paralyzing spores simply scattered away as it came close to Windows 99's rainbow-radiant body model. Ultimately, it was the unleasher of the powder who ended up sunk into the mass of it, although his own favoured method of breathing is less vulnerable to small airborne particles than that which we're more familiar with.

Thinking of his next commands up, Aries bounced over to a cloud in the vicinity, making sure to act as sneakily as possible, but never actually getting any closer to his mark to try anything. Noctowl soon realized her mistake. "Covet! I meant Covet!"

With a disappointed slump, the windveiled Pokémon moved in more peacefully, taking an interest in a garbage bag slung around the opponent's midsection, taking a joyful look into its contents. Apple cores, excess rice, half-eaten beef, the works! Has it got breadcrumbs? It's got freakin' breadcrumbs! One just has got to share this kind of sweet loot. And since Porygon-Z seemed to crash instead of answering the request, why not take the whole bag? And why not give its former wielder a straight hook right across the face, since this is still right in the middle of a fight?

Unflappable and ever lagging, the alien dimension interloper prepared its next move, but even by then it was still on the defensive. The subtle fan noise intensified into a mighty whirr, and the familiar smell of rust wafted as Windows 99 let this red-blue nonsense on its skin fade away and revealed its true, steely colors. It made cackle-like electric noises, and then played a familiar soundbite: "I AM IRON MAN".

Let's just go for some heavy damage here, so go ahead and use Ice Beam three times. If she puts up a Light Screen, change to Iron Tail. If she tries to status you/lower your stats, Magic Coat it right back at her.

Now we can get ahead with our trickster shenanigans. Please try again with the stun spore. Next we shall use light screen, because we need that extra defence. And finally, cotton guard, to bulk up and protect from those iron tails.

-----

Aries tried to sneak a more solid peek at his bag of stolen loot, but nearly let it go and plummet through the big blue and into the ocean. Such a close call! It was best to keep that thing safely strapped as the fight resumed.

Now going easy on the wicked loops, the Whimsicott skipped over his enemy, scattering a screen of spore as he did. And yet again, the enemy responded to the move in time, rebuffing it while radiating a multicolor glow. Still safe from the rebound move, Noctowl's Pokémon rapidly proceeded into his next move, summoning a shimmering barrier around himself to ward off special attacks. If it were more solid, perhaps it'd be a useful means of retaining any falling sweet loot...

Recognizing the attack, and with some lag after interpreting the needed change in its move routine, Windows 99 sprung into action, swinging its rusty tail right through the Light Screen and into its opponent's side, flinging him up and away into the sky with the heavy force of the blow and leaving some of his fluffy mane to do as downy seeds are wont to and scatter in the wind.

Distressed by the loss of some fluff, Aries hastily bundled himself into the rest of his cotton coat, rapidly regrowing a blundle of it. Having built up more fuzz than his own body mass, he started to fall down a bit from not being used to keeping the added weight afloat, but still, he came down nonwhere near as far as the earlier attack had rocketed him up.

Still, he gently glided just about back down into the foe's attacking range, and it was more than happy to oblige, with a front flip to hammer down the top of the windveiled Pokémon's and send him hurtling a few ways downards, even scattering another bunch of his shielding down.

The second round ended with a noticeable change in the tides as Aries limped upwards and Windows 99 played a robotic laughter soundfile.

Despite one battler being more or less backed into a corner, the tournament battle continued on, with the gusto of each trainer intact.

Now all through with the buildups, Aries went on the offensive, although he sagely kept away from the wild iron maulings of the opponent, instead attacking from a distance. Windows 99 for the most part proved much too slow to close the gap, its Iron Tail move continuously failing to land a hit, while the Whimsicott mischievously pelted it with purple semi-solid shooting blobs that phased right through the faraday cage and into the heart of the machine, leaving it most distraught.

It was only towards the end of the round that the Porygon-Z managed to get its own in. For a moment, Aries had become careless, having obtained much success with the sniping strategy; it was then that he finally couldn't avoid the final swing, only managing to get so much of his body out of the way before a glancing blow to the middle of his right leg. The touch of steel once more sapped the Fairy-type's strength, even where a layer of protective cotton had remained, perhaps to stop him building up his hubris another time.

The gap between the Pokemon in battle had shrunk significantly in the previous round -- it seemed like the beginning of a turnabout, even as Aries had been set back a little towards the end. The blow didn't seem to reduce his confidence in the new strategy, however.

Hovering about as far away as he could without moving out of the relatively limited earshot of a robot in the middle of the noisy high-altitude winds, the Whimsicott, hoping to draw another easily avoidable attack, started to beckon forth his enemy with arrogant flourishes. He waved his mane about like a matador, cocky but ready to evade the inevitable bull rush. Just as he expected, even the virtual, artificial creature still had perfect capacity for anger, expressed in the bizarre mangling of his visage as though he were a glitching model from a cheap sports videogame.

What he couldn't have anticipated, however, is that while he stuck to his strategy, his foes had already adapted theirs. Instead of moving in for an attack, the mess of faltering graphics fired a shimmering pale blue ray right across the distance, leaving his target only the time to let his jaw droop before he was struck full-on by a sharp point of blistering coldness. The affected area seemed to almost wither with the temperature shock.

Now in less of a haughty position, Aries dipped forwards in an arc-like movement, all the while swaying left and right in hopes of making himself a more difficult target for other projectile attacks, and once closer in, proceeded into yet another attempt of an attack that had by that point failed twice. The third time got to be the charm, however, as attempting to boot up the Magic Coat to rebuff the Stun Spore could only cause Windows 99 to glitch further -- although it seems as if, through means incomprehensible to eyes that can only see three dimensions, his chaotically extending and withdrawing body actually pelted his opponent's mutiple times until he backed off.

Flicker as though it might've, the Porygon-Z inhaled the powder, which proceeded to wreak even more havoc in its system. For a moment, it seemed frozen to a standstill, as old operational systems are wont to become, albeit still while his visage was eldritch. In this oppotune moment, the Whimsicott carefully stuck some seeds to its torso and limbs, watching them somehow rapidly grow into parasitic vines while fueled by no nutrient but programming code. The strangest yet, however, was when Windows 99, still completely unmoving, somehow made manifest another icy blast, once again catching its mark perfectly off-guard to leave a dull black necrotic brand on the impact site.

Feeling like foliage in the coming of the colder seasons, Aries could hardly stay aloft properly. He seemed almost eager to drop like an autumn leaf -- was winter truly coming for Noctowl's tournament campaign?

Additional notes:
- The taunt as status thing is... complicated. For one thing, I seem to have missed the discussion of it in the Question Box -- late as though it might be, Superbird's undersanding of what does or doesn't count as status is, at the very least, explicitly incorrect wrt infatuation (which is listed in the guides as a status condition). Unfortunately, there's little in the way of objective ways to define "status" in such a specific, technical way as would apply to a loophole exploit situation. For now at least, however, I've ultimately decided to count as "status" per se only things that are listed as such in the guides, which the taunted status isn't, so, Ice Beam was used in the first action.
- On the second action, Windows 99 couldn't use Magic Coat due to being taunted and used Struggle instead.
- Neither of Windows 99's moves this round failed as a result of paralysis.
- The Taunt wore off at the end of the third action.
