Far off the coast of Cianwood, there is an island that's climate changes are sudden and often incredibly random. Due to such changes, the weather is constantly changing in the area, and not even that, but the time of day seems to be always changing as well. At one moment it might be a bright sunny day, and then within a few moments it might be an incredibly stormy night. The "nights" on the island are incredibly dark, and often only the outlines of figures on the island are visible.

Each round there is a 60% chance that day will turn into night, or vice versa. During the night, the accuracy of all moves is dropped by 10%

Each round, there is a 90% chance that the weather will change. When it does change, there is a 30% chance it will be Sunny Day / Hail (Sunny Day if the time for the round is night, Hail if it is at night), 30% chance it will be rain, 15% chance it will be foggy, 15% chance that it will be Cloudy, and a 10% chance that there will be a thunderstorm.

During foggy whether, all moves accuracy decrease by 5% (added onto the accuracy drop during night, if at night). During cloudy whether, the damage of normal-type moves iare multiplied by by 1.5, and the power of all other moves lose 1% of damage. During thunderstorm whether, the damage of water and electric type moves are multiplied by 1.5, and fire type damage is multiplied by .5.

Other: Weather related moves do not work in the island, as the weather is impossible to manipulate

Screwed-up Weather Island is a little-known spit of land, unremarkable save for its unusually erratic atmospheric conditions. Whether caused by the clash of Groudon and Kyogre's powers as the two ancient beasts slumber beneath the region's waves or by something else entirely, they ensure that any visit to the island is as brief as possible--almost all of its weather changes are violent and quite unpleasant to sit through.

For the moment, though, the weather seems to be behaving itself. It's daytime, just like it is in the rest of the region, and the air is calm and pleasantly warm. Perhaps if they had known the true nature of the island's weather, the trainers converging on it wouldn't be so interested in making it their place of battle. As it stands, ultraviolet rides behind the referee on her aerodactyl while Blaziking buzzes just above the surface of the waves, suspended in his yanma's grasp. The group lands on the sparse little island, chatting idly amongst themselves as the pokémon are recalled and battle lines are drawn; if any of them suspect what violent changes the battlefield may have in store for them, they show no sign of it.

Blaziking gets the battle started by sending out his spiritomb, Choque; the ghost's neon, gaseous body is almost transparent under the bright sunlight, and he doesn't appear to be enjoying the light overmuch. ultraviolet's fighter, Lyre the chinchou, is much more pleased to be sent out on the shore; the anglerfish turns and gazes out at the ocean until, as her trainer begins to give commands, she gets much more serious, fixing her eyes on Choque and preparing to leap into action as soon as possible.

ultraviolet (OOOO)

- Trying to ignore her apprehension at facing down a spiritomb.

Electricity crackles around the bulbs on the tips of Lyre's antennae, and as she brings them together, a thin streamer of electricity whips through the air and strikes Choque straight in the middle of his gaseous face. The spiritomb shudders as the charge disrupts the gentle flow of the gases that constitute his "body." Irregular patches of high-density ectoplasm cause unsightly clots in the spinning rim of his face and make it a bit difficult for him to control his movements, but overall paralysis doesn't do much to hinder Choque--it's not like he was planning to do much running around anyway.

Leering at Lyre, the spiritomb starts to swirl the gas that makes up his body faster and faster, spirals of color appearing and vanishing in the midst of the storm of ectoplasm as the spiritomb's usual facial features are lost in the whirl of gas. Lyre stares dreamily into the odd display, mesmerized by the whirling patterns that scud across the spiritomb's body. Her bulbs droop, her eyelids following--until a sudden panic grips her. Wait a minute! She knows what's going on here! The chinchou tears her eyes away from the entrancing display, sparks dancing around her antennae as she tries to jolt herself back to full wakefulness. She's not about to be taken in by Choque's hypnosis that easily. Instead, she prepares to cast her own spell over the spiritomb's mind.

As Choque observes that Lyre's broken the power of his hypnosis, he winds down his dizzy twirling for a moment of rest before giving the attack another shot. A glance at Lyre reveals something intriguing, though. The chinchou's bulbs glow brightly, even against the background of sun-bleached sand, and are bobbing back and forth, almost appearing to dance playfully in the air. Choque watches, amused despite himself; the rhythmic bouncing of the glowing lights has an odd hypnotic quality, and Choque feels a weird compulsion to get a better look. The spiritomb absentmindedly darts forward, extending his gaseous neck--forgetting entirely that his keystone is still firmly planted on the ground. Choque is suddenly brought up short, at the boundary of how far his body can extend from his keystone, and the sharp jerk serves to tip the heavy stone forward, sending its occupant facefirst into the sandy earth.

Lyre smirks, then turns and hops into the sea. Reaching out to the surging currents racing all around the island, she diverts a bit of their power into generating a gargantuan wave--one big enough to loom tall over the island and, with her riding on its crest, come roaring down on Choque. Even the spiritomb's heavy keystone gets picked up and rolled along the ground by the force of the wave.

Lyre happily splashes down on the far side of the island, turning back to see how her opponent's fared. Choque slowly raises his body off the ground, eyes distant and unfocused. Pretty... lights? Where did the pretty lights go? Another unsuccessful attempt to pursue them leaves the spiritomb lying facedown in the sand again, perplexed and in pain.

Nice going, Lyre! *cuddles her* Now what I want you to do is use Flash - hopefully this'll aggravate his confusion for a bit, and then go underwater - he can't use hypnosis if you can't see him! While you're down there, I'd like you to create a substitute (as I have no idea if Shadow Ball will disspiate into the water or not) and then finish up with surf.

If at any point he is able to hypnotize you, send a Sleep Talk his way.

Choque slowly raises his head out of the sand, shaking grit out of his ethereal eyes and trying to get a grip on himself. The dancing lights continue to haunt his muzzy mind, and he sweeps his gaze out around the island in an attempt to catch sight of them. All that he finds, though, is Lyre, whose antennae blaze with light, overpowering even the glare of the sun. Dazzled, Choque recoils, blinking his eyes and trying to dispel the afterimages that cloud his sight. His flailing around only succeeds in casting him to the ground again, where he hisses curses and blindly tries to right himself.

While Choque struggles with his confusion on the island, Lyre sinks below the waves, her antennae leaving drifting points of light behind her in the water as she goes. As Lyre imbues the glowing granules with some of her own lifeforce, they dart and twirl around like tiny lightning bugs, forming up into a three-dimensional replica of the chinchou herself. The glowing substitute floats just above its creator, albeit still under the water, and waits for some sign of danger.

None is forthcoming; Choque is still too confused to get his act together, and though he manages to right himself several times, he only ends up tipping over again almost immediately, injuring himself in the process. As he struggles against his delusions, the ocean mysteriously recedes, drawing itself up into an enormous wave just like the one that so recently soaked the island.

This time Lyre is directing the surf attack from below rather than riding on its crest, but it is no less powerful for her absence. The surf attack roars down over Choque, washing the spiritomb back several feet as its waters struggle to tear the ghost's wispy body apart entirely.

As the wave expends the last of its energy Choque is left lying on his side, his keystone drenched, in an awful mood. If nothing else, the surf seems to have knocked some sense into him. Though still a bit disoriented, he is able to drag himself into a slow float to the side of the island from which the surf came. Peering into the water, he can see the glow of Lyre and her substitute.

Wisps of ectoplasm tear themselves away from the ghost's body, condensing into a swirling ball in the air before his face before he fires them into the water below. Lyre's substitute rises up to meet the shadow ball, the glowing lights that make up its body counteracting the ghostly energies. Much of the substitute's body goes dark as the power of the points of energy that make it up are spent in negating the attack, but enough of it remains for it to still be vaguely recognizable as a chinchou.

As Lyre darts back towards the surface with a couple flips of her fins, the sky overhead grows ominously dark, first as clouds boil into existence from thin air, hiding the sun behind towering gray thunderheads, and then darker still as the sun decides it's had enough and sets in fast-motion, leaving Screwed Up Weather Island in the middle of a moonless night. The clouds obligingly provide some illumination as periodic lightning flickers from their underbelly, accompanied by an impressive downpour.

Choque's glowing body, Lyre's substitute, and Lyre's lures lend a faint light to the arena, but it's barely enough to see by. The chinchou, fortunately, is used to the low-light conditions of the depths and is little worried about missing her target, even in the dead of night amidst pouring rain. One of the bulbs on her antennae glows blue and the other, red, as she infuses them with bug energy. Twin beams of hissing light blast from the ends of her antennae, coiling around one another as they fly straight towards Choque and rip a chunk out of his ghostly body.

The spiritomb, meanwhile, is totally mystified by the abrupt change in the weather. He remains disoriented and confused, though like Lyre, he is little bothered by the darkness. As the chinchou's signal beam sears into his body, he is shocked back to lucidity, at least for the moment. Tendrils of gas flow into the hole opened up by the beam attack, sealing it up again, and Choque closes his eyes, a nasty smile on his face as he contemplates all the awful things he's going to do to Lyre to get back at her for the humiliation she's put him through this battle. Unfortunately, his paralysis makes the normal circulation of gases through his body jumbled and uncomfortable, and Choque finds his scheming a bit distracted.

After making sure her signal beam hit home, Lyre disappears from sight, sinking back under the water and swimming straight down. Once she's reached a point some three meters below the waves, she turns her eyes upward and reverses her trajectory, fins beating furiously as she races towards the surface. The chinchou hurtles out of the water and goes sailing through the air, her substitute following. Choque, eyes still closed, misses the sight of the flying chinchou and experiences only the confusion of impact as Lyre comes crashing down atop him.

The spiritomb is left spluttering and shaking himself as Lyre hops to a spot a short distance away, but he recovers quickly enough. Having a fish drop on you out of the sky is certainly strange, but the powerful blast of water that accompanied the chinchou's landing is sufficient to shock Choque fully back to his senses. Not only that, but now Lyre is in range of his hypnosis, and the spiritomb can't suppress a wicked grin as he realizes it. Fantastic patterns flow through his gaseous body, creating a mesmerizing neon display that Lyre can't hope to resist. Unfortunately, she has her substitute with her, and what little mind the construct has is totally unaffected by Choque's hypnosis. The watery creature scoots between Lyre and Choque, blocking the chinchou's view of her opponent. Though at first Lyre, already a bit taken in by the hypnosis attack, tries to push it out of the way and see what Choque is doing, the substitute is persistent and she eventually loses interest.

Lyre settles down on the sand to take a rest, unperturbed by the violent thunderstorm raging all around her. Choque, meanwhile, grows increasingly incensed as he flashes beautiful displays of neon colors at Lyre's impassive substitute, having no luck at all in hypnotizing it.

Well, your substitute should protect you from Hypnosis again - I don't see why it wouldn't - but don't look at what he's doing, unless you want to be asleep.

Firstly, let's muck about with this Spiritomb - use Swagger and confuse him. Then go again with Surf, and end with Thunderbolt (hopefully this will aggravate his paralysis).

As suddenly as night descended upon the arena, it retreats again, making way for a hazy dawn that does little to actually bring light to the island. The dense rain clouds continue to wall off the sky behind a slate barrier, although the rain slackens a little and the rumbles of thunder grow increasingly distant before vanishing altogether. It goes from pitch-black with the occasional flash of lightning to merely murky, with a complement of steady, soaking rain to round out the miserable atmosphere.

Lyre is hardly bothered by all the dim and damp, of course; if anything, she feels better than ever in the present weather conditions--and she'd be happy to tell Choque all about it. Scooting out from behind her substitute, the chinchou gets Choque's attention with a breezy chirp. She bounces around, quite happily expounding on how great she feels (how great she is, for that matter) and what a fine time she's having in this battle--primarily at Choque's expense. The spiritomb fumes as the chinchou prattles on. He'd love nothing more than to wipe that cheery smile off Lyre's face, to just shut her up for a few minutes so he can try to shake the queasy, disoriented feeling that afflicts him as his anger rises. Trying to push aside his ire for the moment, he concentrates on producing another lightshow in an attempt to put the chinchou under. As before, though, her substitute moves to put itself between the two battlers, and Choque's hypnosis is wasted on its indifferent attention.

While Choque is still exerting all his abilities in an attempt to hypnotize her substitute, Lyre lets her mind drift back to the ocean that churns all around the island, stirred to a fury by the storm. The waves call out to her, and she calls back, tapping into the power of the currents and the tides and gathering together a mighty wave. Choque is oblivious as a great wall of water rears up over the tiny island, his eyes locked with Lyre's glowing substitute, body whirling madly away. The surf attack makes its presence known by crashing down atop him, strengthened by the rain and easily enough to rip his keystone out of the ground and swirl him away across the sand in a vicious tide of watery might. Lyre and her substitute, meanwhile, float cheerfully along at the surface of the water, enjoying the wave immensely.

When at last the water recedes and Choque is left stranded halfway across the island from where he was before, the spriritomb is absolutely furious. It's all he can do to set his essence a-swirling again, peeling off a chunk of wispy ghost energy and hurling it towards Lyre. The chinchou's substitute leaps to intercept the shadow ball and is blown apart, dying sparks of light scattered in all directions.

There is nothing to stand between Lyre and her opponent now; the chinchou frowns, putting levity aside for the moment, and stimulates the electricity-generating cells in her antennae. Sparks arc between the twin bulbs as charge builds, and then a great bolt of electricity rockets towards Choque. The thunderbolt strikes the spiritomb cleanly, and for a few seconds Choque can only gurgle and convulse as the powerful attack torments his battered essence. That's the last straw; the enraged ghost throws caution and his commands to the winds, letting out an incoherent screech as he strains towards Lyre. His rage is largely ineffectual, however; blinded by his confusion, the spritomb can do little more than thrash around at random, inflicting damage on no one but himself as he eventually manages to tip himself over again, smacking facefirst into the sand.

At last the rain stops and the clouds begin to drift apart, revealing that the sun beyond is sliding rapidly towards the horizon. As it sets in a spectacular, but very brief, splash of red and orange, a fog creeps up from nowhere, rolling in over the beach and wrapping both battlers in its clammy tendrils. The pokémon, well accustomed to grave-cold and the icy depths respectively, don't even shudder, but the humans standing around the battlefield hug their arms closer to themselves as goosebumps rise on their flesh. The two pokémon are visible only as glowing specks out in the sea of haze, Lyre's dangling antennae lending a clear yellow-white glow, while Choque's poisonous-looking body flickers weird colors in the gloom.

While Choque curses and rocks back and forth, his weakened state making it more difficult to wrestle his keystone into an upright position, Lyre gathers water from her inner reserves. The chinchou saturates the liquid she's collected with salts, creating a brackish mixture that is sure to sear even Choque's gaseous flesh. The spiritomb raises himself from the sand just in time to receive a stinging jet of brine to the face and immediately tries to throw himself out of the way, hissing as high-powered spray tears through his vaporous body and sears his very essence.

While the brine does serve to blast most of the lingering haziness from the spiritomb's mind, his dazzled vision proves a problem, given the fog and the nighttime conditions. Growling, the dripping spiritomb swivels this way and that on his keystone, peering nearsightedly through the fog. He thinks he sees a bright smudge that might be Lyre, and the spiritomb decides that he has no better options and directs his hypnosis attack in that direction. In a reversal of his abysmal luck, the spiritomb picks the right target, and his flashing, swirling display of color catches Lyre's eye. Without her substitute to protect her, the chinchou is taken in, dazzled by the spiritomb's mesmerizing hypnosis. Lyre's eyelids flutter, then finally close as she settles gently into the sand, asleep.

Choque's ragged grin broadens considerably as a tendril of psychic energy directed towards his opponent finds her asleep. Asleep, perhaps, but not idle--Lyre's head bubbles with disconnected but busy thoughts, visions of attacks arising and vanishing again at random as her subconscious struggles to throw up a strategy for her to latch onto. As Choque begins to sink more insidious tendrils of psychic power into her mind, the chinchou settles on an attack at last--and is promptly interrupted by a blast from the referee's whistle that startles her out of the beginnings of a healing trance. Choque, too, pauses for a moment out of surprise, but when nothing more unusual happens, greedily pours more energy into Lyre's mind, grabbing at a chunk of her dreams and wresting it free, reeling it back in across empty space for his own psyche to feast on while leaving Lyre's bare.

Th chinchou shudders in her sleep and busily sets about another sleep talk, undeterred by her earlier failure. This time, she produces a perfectly legitimate attack, and Choque recoils as a brilliant flash emanates from the chinchou's antennae. He is forced to squint at an even blurrier landscape, confused by drifting afterimages, as he seeks out his opponent again. Fortunately, his mind is a bit more reliable than his eyes at this point, and he is able to lock onto the sleepy whirl of his opponent's dreams. Once again he tears free a chunk of dreamstuff and absorbs it into himself, a few minor rents in his body healing over as he digests the hunk of mental energy. Though for the moment rejuvenated by Lyre's dreams, the spiritomb is still in very rough shape, and he can't rely on his opponent to slumber forever.
