A blush of red spreads out across the horizon, and seconds later the sun is rising, driving back the fog as it climbs towards its apex. Higher and higher it goes, and brighter and brighter it glows, until Choque shrinks back against his keystone, squinting glowing eyes against the hated radiance. The fog burns away and the air heats up, bringing the arena back more or less to the state that it was in when the battle began--only brighter and hotter, were that possible.

While Choque tries to muster himself despite the bright sunlight nipping at his essence, Lyre is humming faintly to herself in her sleep, the lights in her bulbs flickering a warning pattern. Lyre takes a deep breath, then spits out an incredible column of water, nearly as big around as her body and with enough recoil to tip her onto her back. Choque may not like the sun, but it's lucky for him that it decided to come out--it at least takes a bit of the sting out of the chilly hydro pump.

Properly shocked back into the battle, Choque gives himself a weak shake and fixes suspicious eyes on his opponent. But she is still sleeping, feet pointed skyward, and takes no notice of his scrutiny. Relieved, Choque reaches out to wrap the chinchou's mind in his own again, teasing free another thread of dreams and absorbing them into his consciousness.

The spiritomb is not a second too soon; whether because she senses his psychic manipulations or for some other reason entirely, Lyre stirs in her sleep and opens her eyes, only to find them a bit too close to the sand for comfort. Wriggling around a bit, the chinchou manages to tip herself back to her normal orientation. She feels drained and sluggish, but the intense sunlight is working to revive her at a decent pace, if only because for a deep-sea water-type, its glare is almost painful.

There's no time for trying to pull herself back together. Her opponent isn't looking too good, his essence grown frayed and faint, but he's still in the game, and Lyre needs to get an attack in before he has an opportunity to try for one himself. Drawing on her watery reserves again, she prepares a viciously salty liquid, then shoots a concentrated stream of it at Choque.

The spiritomb screeches as the stinging brine attack punches a hole in the lower half of his body, easily tearing through what is left of his essence. He doesn't know how long he can keep this up; his vision is starting to waver, and Lyre shows little sign of slowing down. Choque forces himself to concentrate, twining some of his remaining essence into a swirling ball of ghost energy and hurling it at Lyre. The shadow ball strikes true, and Lyre is forced to dig her feet into the sand to avoid being forced back.

One or two more brines will finish Choque, and Lyre intends to knock the spiritomb out as quickly as possible. She prepares another attack, but this time her sun-dazzled eyes betray her: the brine goes shooting uselessly off to the side of her opponent. Fortunately for Lyre, though, the spiritomb is feeling in no mood to take advantage of the opening she's left him. He merely slumps over his keystone, trying to relax despite the strain of simply keeping his essence together outside the protective prison of his keystone.

The blazing sun loses a bit of its luster as it continues its journey across the sky, dipping back towards the horizon even as dense clouds roll in to smother its exuberance. This time, no lightning, nor even rain, accompany them; they simply hang low, a smothering blanket that blocks out the moon, as night descends on the arena once again.

Meanwhile, Choque is struggling to pull his essence together for a valiant attempt at a shadow ball. He hasn't a prayer of preparing his attack before Lyre can finish hers, though, and the spiritomb's attack is only about half-complete when he gets hosed by a burst of salty water. The brine attack is too much for him, and his shadow ball fizzles out even as the spiritomb himself lets out a weary hiss and sinks back into the cracks in his keystone, unable to resist its pull any longer.

Choque, who now looks like nothing more than a rock with a weirdly-glowing crack down the middle, is recalled. As Blaziking fumbles around for his next pokémon, dawn breaks over the eastern ocean. As the sun rises, though, things don't get much brighter: the clouds are only thickening, growing black with rain. As Blaziking casts his next pokéball to the sand, drizzle starts to patter onto the island. By the time Carnage the bellsprout has taken shape and settled her roots into the sand, the weather is working up to a real downpour, and while both pokémon appear to be enjoying the rain, the trainers raise arms over heads, scowling and hoping that the crazy atmospheric conditions around here will banish the storm soon.

Carnage is the first to move, fluttering her leaves in the air as they release a dense cloud of sleep-inducing powder. The glittering cloud engulfs Lyre, and the Chinchou's eyes begin to flutter. She's so tired, after all... it would be easy to just relax and drift off to sleep. Carnage looks on in excitement as Lyre sinks further and further towards slumber, only the occasional flicker of yellow showing beneath her lids. Much to the bellsprout's dismay, though, her opponent rallies--Lyre gives herself a vigorous shake and stumbles away from the cloud of sleep powder, trying to brush what has settled on her off with her fins. Carnage hisses quietly as Lyre, reinvigorated by thoughts of her recent victory and the potential for further glory, throws off the effects of sleep powder and begins an attack of her own.

Lyre spits a steady stream of water onto the sand in front of her, glowing specks of bacteria whirling in its center. Rather than simply sinking into the sand, the water swirls back on itself with a life of its own, forming a lozenge shape more or less like that of Lyre's body, the lights inside fanning out to define its perimeter. The chinchou lets the streamer of water die away quickly but, to her dismay, the substitute is unstable and looks as though it might fall apart at any moment. Desperate not to let her work go to waste, the chinchou starts up the water works again and adds a bit more mass to the substitute, until it looks substantial enough to stand on its own.

No sooner has Lyre finished fashioning her watery double than Carnage goes on the attack again. Once more she blows a cloud of sleep powder from her leaves, but this time Lyre's substitute scuttles between the chinchou and the attack, and almost all of the sleep powder settles on it instead of its intended target. Lyre herself is left free to relax for a moment, and she lets her eyes fall closed as she enjoys the feeling of rain on her skin.

Carnage finds herself in a depressing situation that Choque might well have recognized, resigned to casting another sleep powder Lyre's way despite the fact that she knows it's futile. Predictably, the chinchou's substitute blocks the attack. Lyre reluctantly comes up out of her chill and steps out from behind the avatar, which has gained a fetching layer of glittering green powder, and stimulates the bacteria in the bulbs on her antennae. They flash red and blue for a moment before hurling a pair of scintillating beams of bug-type energy that twine around one another as they home in on Carnage. The bellsprout withstands the attack with poor humor, not badly hurt but definitely discouraged.

The miserable downpour continues--if anything, it starts to get worse. Water slashes down out of the sky, while distant rolls of thunder announce that things will shortly get even more unpleasant. Before long, the air is being split by intermittent flashes of light and roars of thunder. Lyre, of course, is delighted--water and lightning! What a perfect combination! By now, though, Carnage has had enough of being watered. The bellsprout concentrates grass energy into a brilliant green orb, then spits it at Lyre's substitute. The watery construct, which stood strong against so many sleep powders, is blown to pieces as the energy ball collides with it.

Carnage's sense of victory is short-lived. Lyre is less than pleased by her substitute's demise and wastes no time chilling the water in her inner reserves to subzero temperatures. Perhaps her ire gets the better of her, though; the stream of frigid water she spews at Carnage isn't terribly well aimed, and the ice beam only grazes the bellsprout's side.

Even the attenuated ice beam is quite a painful shock, though. Carnage shivers, the place on her stem where the attack struck stinging awfully every time she moves. She can't back down now, though. Another glowing energy ball, like some weird bubblegum bubble, grows at the tip of her bell, and with a quick snap of the head, goes sailing towards Lyre. This time it is the chinchou herself who takes the attack head-on, and as the burning grass energy explodes over her body, she is intensely grateful that she had the substitute to take the fall for her in the last action. With her energy reserves low and her health declining, Lyre needs a couple of seconds to recover from the attack and prepare her next ice beam. This time the freezing projectile is more carefully judged, however, and Carnage escapes not one bit of its frosty power, much to her dismay.

A final energy ball from the bellsprout leaves Lyre bruised and exhausted. It takes all her concentration to draw up and sustain another ice beam. Carnage's obvious discomfort as the frigid attack ices over more of her stem gives Lyre some small comfort, but she simply hasn't got it in her to stick it out for another round. The exhausted chinchou lapses into unconsciousness.

- Annoyed by the rain.

ultraviolet doesn't seem terribly worried as she recalls Lyre from the battlefield, and she doesn't hesitate to toss another pokéball to the sand. Carnage can only groan inwardly as Deuce the ponyta leaps free of confinement, mane and tail blazing merrily. A fire type, of course. Well, at least the rain will weaken the ponyta's attacks a bit, for as long as it lasts.

Deuce himself is only really becoming aware of the rain now, his excitement over being sent out to battle fading a bit as he is promptly soaked by the sullen thunderstorm that hangs over the arena. The rain does start to slacken a bit as the ponyta stamps and shakes himself, scattering droplets of water but doing little towards drying himself off. By now the flashes of lightning are much more intermittent and the thunder is no more than a distant mutter, but the rain persists. Resigning himself to dealing with the awful weather, Deuce snorts and paws at the ground, awaiting his first commands.

When they come, he is quick to act, breathing a steady stream of flame at the ground just in front of him. Rather than dissipating upon striking the sand, the magical fire swirls back on itself, taking the shape of a ponyta, somewhat smaller than Deuce. As the ponyta cuts off his flame, the substitute is left standing quietly between him and Carnage, sparking with silver energy, Deuce's own lifeforce sacrificed to bind the construct together.

Carnage has seen this before, of course. Hoping against hope that her trainer knows something she doesn't, she gives her leaves a few decisive shakes, blowing a cloud of sleep powder at Deuce. As expected, however, the substitute simply steps up to take the attack, and the sleep powder fizzles away to nothing as it settles over the fiery creature.

Deuce does his best to hide a triumphant smirk as he rears up and paws the air, his flames blazing higher despite the rain. Before Carnage's startled eyes he prances back and forth across the sand, tossing his head and showing off his speed and agility with a few quick races around the beach. Despite herself, Carnage can't help but be a bit mesmerized by the ponyta's confidence and obvious strength. It is not too difficult to forget about her useless command and simply watch Deuce's antics, and the ponyta is only egged on by his apparently rapt audience.

Deuce can only amuse himself and show off for so long, however. He has his orders--and they call for Carnage to eat a faceful of fire, adoring fan or not. The ponyta casually turns towards Carnage and breathes a thick streamer of fire over the little grass type. Carnage wails, her leaves blackening even though the thorough soaking the rain's given her helps prevent catastrophic damage. The bellsprout is left a bit confused--wasn't Deuce just putting on a big show for her? Doesn't he care?

Well, perhaps he just thought she looked a bit chilly. The flamethrower certainly did take care of the ice that Lyre had heaped on the bellsprout. And of course he knew that the rain would prevent her from getting seriously injured... As the bellsprout agonizes over what Deuce's behavior might mean, she forgets all about the sleep powder she was supposed to be spreading.

At long last the rain begins to slacken, petering off to a drizzle before stopping altogether. The clouds overhead roll back, letting brilliant sunlight shine down once more, and Deuce lets out a snort and gives himself to dislodge a bit of the water trapped in his coat. The strange weather isn't done yet, though, and in defiance of all natural weather patterns, a thick, clammy fog billows up around the island, cloaking the pokémon in a veil of mist despite the fact that the sun continues to blaze on overhead. Carnage still has a vague idea of where Deuce is, the ponyta's flames glowing through the fog, but Deuce, much to his annoyance, is forced to work from memory when it comes to targeting his opponent.

Fortunately, his first attack doesn't require any real aim, though the fog is going to make his work difficult if it prevents Carnage from seeing him. Letting his flames flare up to their most impressive height, Deuce prances back and forth, tossing his head and striking noble poses for the benefit of any bellsprout that might be looking on. Carnage, who is still rather love-addled, watches the light moving back and forth in the fog. She can see little more than Deuce's silhouette and his leaping flames, but her imagination is happy enough to fill in the rest, and the bellsprout can't help but let out a nervous giggle. Surely Deuce isn't putting on a show just for her, is he?

Of course, her stupid trainer wants her to go and attack him, no matter how sexy he is. Fortunately, the bellsprout knows that there's no possible way that the toxic could harm Deuce even if she were really trying, so in a show of meek obedience she hacks up a mouthful of poisonous sludge and spits it in Deuce's general direction. As predicted, his fiery substitute steps out of the mist, and the toxic burns up as it strikes the construct's body, releasing a truly awful stench in the process.

Deuce's nostrils flare as he inhales the awful odor. Well, if that's all Carnage thinks of his performance, then he'll stop playing the nice guy. Squinting into the fog, the ponyta picks out what he hopes is his opponent and breathes a streamer of flame over her. A distressed cry tells him that his aim was true, though in fact the flamethrower was rather off-center and Carnage wasn't prey to its full power.

Carnage whimpers as the flamethrower washes over her. Does she really deserve this just for a little toxic? Deuce didn't even get hurt! Maybe he's good-looking, but his personality doesn't seem all that great. The bellsprout petulantly tips her head upwards, gathering a mouthful of viscous gunk, and promptly fires it back at her opponent. As expected, the substitute steps up to take the sludge bomb. This time the avatar actually takes damage when the slduge bomb explodes on contact, blasting tongues of flame in all directions and leaving the substitute looking decidedly lopsided, with a great chunk taken out of one of its sides.

Deuce, still unharmed, is quick to retaliate. He breathes a steady streamer of flame at the ground before him, shaping it into a loop as he does so. Pouring more energy into the fire, he incites it to leap higher and begin to spin, forming a whirling vortex of flame. With a nudge of command he sends it moving out across the arena like a fiery, albeit rather slow, tornado. Unfortunately, the fire spin flies entirely wide and only serves to anger Carnage further. The bellsprout prepares another sludge bomb, this one even more dangerous as she pours all her scorned anger into it. Unlike Deuce, she has no problems with aiming, and the substitute is forced to hastily step in to take the attack. The explosive sludge bomb is enough to shred it entirely, leaving Deuce no shield from Carnage's wrath.
