Time traveling is among the most popular among impossible scientific breakthroughs, and it's for a reason -- ancient things sometimes just sound flat out cool. So, would it also be flat out cool to battle in a desolate corner of the Pokémon world's timeline? Perhaps. Because temperatures in the real-world past were much more extreme than the current ones, the battle will being with Sunny Day perpetually in effect, with a 25% chance that a Rain Dance will kick in for the duration of 2~15 actions. Additionally, there is a 75% chance that an ancient Pokémon will strike a randomly chosen target at the end of the round; each time this occours, the chances will drop by 10%, until they reach 55%; then, they will drop by 5% per occourance, until they reach 5%. At that point, the chance will no longer lower. The following are possible attacks: Kabutops (Earthquake), Omastar (Hydro Pump), Aerodactyl (Sky Attack), Armaldo (X-Scissor), Cradily (Gastro Acid), Rampardos (Head Smash), Bastiodon (Iron Head), Mamoswine (Blizzard), Magikarp ancestor (Hyper Beam), pre-modern man (Wood Hammer). These will never miss, but have normal chances of landing critical hits and activating secondary effects. All rock-type attacks will cause 1% damage and cost 1% less energy, and Ancientpower has twice as many chances to activate its secondary effect. Lastly, this arena is near the sea and surrounded by massive plantlife high cavernous mountains, with a volcano in the vicinty. There is a 1% chance each round that the volcano will erupt.

...Actually, something I'd like to ask. On the unlikely event that the volcano does erupt, what would happen?

The eruption would cause whatever your interpretation says it would make sense to happen. That probably means some degree of arena destruction, as well as damage to whoever touches the magma.

And since this arena is prehistoric, I'll stay in the mood and send out a Pokémon named after a prehistoric creature. Go, Megatherium.

I'll send out Cragon.

First of all, use Thunder Fang. Next use Flamethrower, then finish off with Aqua Tail. If Megatherium tries to protect, just Chill. If he tries to cive you some sort of status condition, use Protect.

Thunder Fang/Chill/Protect ~ Flamethrower/Chill/Protect ~ Aqua Tail/Chill/Protect

Hm... Flamethrower is not nice to be hit with now, and Aqua Tail won't be if the rain doesn't play ball.

So why don't we render all commands useless, then counterstrike for grievous damage?

Protect on the first round, so as to force a Chill. Follow up with Encore, to lock our opponent into useless chilling. And since we can say for sure it'll still be chilling at least in that third action, it's time to exploit it.

Protect ~ Encore ~ Focus Punch

The sun beats down heavily as ancient Pokemon roam the landscape. They seem relatively unaware of the fact that three humans have just teleported in, each looking around furtively. One is wearing a Golduck costume, one is wearing a Metallica shirt, and the third seems to be wearing a heavily-modified Team Rocket uniform. They assess the area before deciding this is where they are meant to be, and after the girl in the uniform explains the rules, they all move to their places. Two Pokemon are sent out, and the battle is officially underway.

"Round one... begin!"

Cragon rolls forward slightly and goes to open his jaws for a Thunder Fang - the elecricity is already buzzing around his gums - but appears crestfallen as Megatherium waves happily from underneath a green dome. The tiny lizard recognises this as a Protect, and huffily settles down inside his shell to take a rest. Megatherium, on the other hand, is chuckling to himself. Oh, how nice would a Dragomelet be to eat, he wonders, as he sprawls underneath the safety of his Protect. He honestly didn't even put that much effort into it, and at the end of the action is fades with a pop.

Megatherium then bounds up to Cragon and gives a loud cheer, encouraging the other Pokemon to just lie there, because of course he's not going to do anything, Cragon's too awesome to be backstabbed like that! There's simply no way! If Cragon had his paws free, he'd be preening right now. Yeah, that's right. Who's awesome? I'm awesome! As such, the tiny lizard disregards his previous command and settles down for a little nap instead. His eyes drift closed, but it's not a true Rest - just a quick snooze...

He doesn't even register Megatherium taking two or three steps back and clenching a fist. That fist begins to glow, brighter and brighter, until it hurts for anyone present to look at. The Vigoroth chuckles again and lets the energy build for a little while longer. Cragon burps and rolls onto his side, content that nothing is going to--

A fist smashes into his side, and the Dragomelet goes flying. He gives a pitiful wail as he lands the wrong way up and rolls over. There are numerous cracks and fissure along his shell, and Megatherium gives a wide smile as he blows on his knuckles.

However, right as the referee prepares to wave her little flag, a Rampardos stumbles into the impromptu arena. The ancient Pokemon gives a loud bellow and lowers his head, before charging directly into the wounded Cragon. The lizard gives another whine as more cracks ribbon the surface of his shell. The Rampardos leaves, and the referee raises an eyebrow before finally declaring...

"Round one is over!"

Okay, then, Megatherium, I think we're not going to stay unscathed for much longer. So, we'll have to move through whatever measures the enemy may take.

Counter physical attacks, use Amnesia if a special attack is incoming, and Focus Punch if you're not attacked.

Well, that didn't go to well, did it?

"Round two... begin!"

Both parties watched each other closely. When no attack seemed to be forthcoming, Megatherium clenched his fist once more. Yet again, the bright light began to pulse around his hand. The nergy was slowly building up, and Cragon had no wish to be hit like that again. Frantically, the little lizard tucked himself into the tight confines of his egg and rocked forward, pitching into a roll. He inexplicably began to gather speed, going faster and faster.

When the egg finally rolled to a stop, there were four Dragomelets peering out and looking around. Megatherium snorted angrily, feeling the dull throb of the energy around his fist. Eenie meenie minie moe.... he thought, glancing between then before finally deciding and rushing forward. With a triumphant roar, he brought his fist down... on empty air. The clone flickered out of existence, and the Vigoroth grumbled.

There was a brief stillness as both Pokemon recalled what they were supposed to be doing, and then Cragon hopped forward. His tiny jaws opened up to reveal a little ball of flame flickering within, and Megatherium realised it was a Flamethrower. He sat down and hummed briefly, closing his eyes. He shuffled through everything he had ever learned, before randomly selecting a chunk of information and filing it away where he wouldn't be able to access it for the rest of the battle.

He was just in time to catch a flamethrower to the face. The horrific sunlight streaming down from above only made it worse, the Amnesia just taking the slightest edge off it. He scrubbed furiously at his face before squinting at the retreating egg.

Cragon looked to the earth around him, before bouncing. As his shell hit the earth, it buckled upwards in a line towards Megatherium, before rocks and dirt rose up and swamped the Vigoroth. He gave a muffled roar from under the rocks, before the dirt and rocks suddenly leapt away, crashing back towards Cragon. The Dragomelet could do nothing against the attack, and endured several more cracks on his eggshell. The clones, no longer serving as an illusion, flickered out of sight.

The sun is beating down relentlessly, and shows no signs of fading any time soon.

Notes:
o According to the Dex Registry, Dragomelet has a base speed of 25. This makes them slower than a Metapod. With this in mind, Cragon only achieved enough speed for three clones.
o I hate reffing for Dragomelet. It's so hard to decide how it moves...
o Psymon attacks first, for reals this time.

The reffing implies that the Double Team clones are out, but the end of round stats say they're still there. Which is telling the truth?

Also, driving the foe down to 28% in two rounds is too good to believe (though I managed to do a knockout in that span of time once); you sure you didn't mistype or something?

Cragon's commands were to make 5 clones with Double Team. Bearing in mind that Dragomelets are slower than Metapods, I didn't think this was likely and knocked it down to 3 clones. The way I personally handle commands is to show what they were ordered to do at the start of a round, and then what they actually did at the end of one. If Cragon still had clones knocking around, then I'd have mentioned it in his status.

And I'll double-check my damage stats, but do remember that Focus Punch does 15% damage before anything else is applied, so it's not as unlikely as you think ;)

EDIT: Okay, I went back and recalculated damage, and shortly after doing so I realised I took away the 21% health for Focus Punch, but it missed. So Cragon is actually at 49% health.

Not doing to well here. Let's start off with Stone Edge. Next, use Rollout, and then Rollout again. If he tries to Protect or Chill, use Rock Polish.

Stone Edge/Rock Polish ~ Rollout/Rock Polish ~ Rollout/Rock Polish

Hm... Stone Edge is not very nice to be hit with, and we have a massive speed advantage so that one Rock Polish shouldn't too hard to deal with. Therefore, Chill on the first action.

Next, let's get a little boost in: Focus Energy. Coupled with the Razor Claw, that should give us a nice chance to score a crit, specially if we use crit moves.

Finally, we'll be abusing that good weight difference we probably have. Let Cragon approach, then do a Seismic Toss (which, for the record, Vigoroth can learn in the third generation). Try to make good use of the momentum given by the Rollout.

"Round three... begin!"

Both combatants watch each other warily, before Megatherium decides to simply sit down and relax. He even gives a big fake yawn and winks at Cragon, making it obvious what he's doing. Cragon responds by rolling around a bit and scuffing his cracked shell against the ground, polishing it and smoothing off the rough edges.

Feeling invigorated - Megatherium didn't realise he was beginning to flag - the Vigoroth stands up and focuses. He shuts out all the other thoughts, like what's for dinner? and when is bedtime? in favour of one objective: annhilating his foes. He finishes just in time to spot Cragon curling up inside his shell and barreling forth. His increased focus allows him to merely sidestep the attack, and to add insult to injury he sticks out his tongue.

Cragon grits his tiny fangs and prepares for another attack. Once more he rolls forth, but this time Megatherium does not seem too willing to dodge. Closer and closer he draws, picking up speed and bits of rock, until he crashes into Megatherium like a rock. The Vigoroth does not seem too fussed, grabbing ahold of the Dragomelet on the rebound before tossing him away with force. Cragon squealed as he bounced off a rock, chunks falling out of his shell and revealing golden skin underneath.

Once more, a wild Pokemon appears, but this time it is a Kabutops. The ancient Pokemon looks around and slams both scythes into the ground, a shockwave rippling aross the arena. Strangely, Cragon is unnafected by the Earthquake, but Megatherium is rocked and bounced all over. Finally, the attack ends and the Kabutops skitters away.

"Round four... go!"

Cragon winced and rolled into a considerably more upright position. He ached all over, and while he wasn't tired yet he was definitely in pain. Megatherium watched carefully from the other side of the arena, waiting to see what his opponent would do. Cragon focused, tapping into his Rock typing to pull several sharp-edged stones from the ground. After a brief pause, he launched them towards Megatherium. The Vigoroth roared in pain as the tiny stones embedded themselves in his skin, but quickly shook them off. Cragon blinked as his foe disappeared. In actuality, he'd simply cloaked himself in shadows. Closer and closer he stalked, before raising his claws and slashing them across the Dragomelet's shell.

Cragon bowled forward with a wail, wiggling and scraping himself against the floor in a valiant attempt to get back up. More stones pulled themselves up as he succeeded, once more flinging themselves forward and embedding themselves in Megatherium's skin. Once more, the white-furred Pokemon fades from view, only to reappear a moment latter with his claws in the air and slicing them downwards. His claws dig deeper this time, and Cragon gives one last whimper before finally falling unconcious.
