Why do people dislike Americans?

I've wondered this a bit... I'm not sure. Production wise, the U.S. is the top country in the world, and as far as wars go, we're virtually undefeated (save for vietnam and a couple others.) Jealousy is what I can imagine, but I don't quite know if that's accurate. Also, certain countries do feel some animosity towards us because of certain was (I think.) Possibly might be religion? We're kind of a melting pot as far as that's concerned, while some countries are uniform... Also, I believe (this might not be true) that some countries view us as living in luxury, while they're worse off as far as living standards go.

Really, I can't say why as I'm from the U.S. and have never hated where I live... I really don't know.

Er, if it has anything to do with war then it isn't because people are jealous that the US has 'won' so many...

I guess this is a little relevant. I remember reading a book my some posh British World War One Guy with a whole bunch of titles (Viscount The Marquis etc etc etc) called The Art Of Leadership.
It had about half a chapter dedicated to America, and it was about why America 'is going to be despised above all others in times to come' (this book was mainly memoirs written just after ww1) and it's basically saying - and I'm simplifying this - that America is the big ginger kid with no social skills but lots of money and lots of muscle.

I am American, but I still dislike Americans as a joke.
In reality, every country has their own problems so why focus on America's?

I imagine because this is a thread about the USA, and the Phantom is an American. If you like I can list some of the things wrong with my country!

We have a Conservative government (the Lib Dems don't really make it non-Conservative), our Prime Minister stood up and said we're a Christian nation, we have crippling debt and our Conservative government has made it even more difficult for people from poor backgrounds to attend university. We've also basically sulked and gone to sit in the corner when it comes to the EU, so we're going to lose all sorts of influence and ability to actually decide things there. :D

There's absolutely nothing wrong with my country. Free healthcare, you get money for not working, free pornography, all women are sexy and promiscuous blondes, Vikings, no one is lactose intolerant, zero greenhouse gas emissions etc...

High suicide rates and expensive.

That's all I can think about. Also, not into blondes.

I would prolly enjoy Sweden.

Oh yeah, true. No drugs. The thing about Sweden being expensive is mostly because of the high taxes, but hey, those are for a good cause!

I don't know, I think it's pretty harsh on everyone non-American to put forward that everyone hates America; most non-Americans I know online don't really give a shit about America. I do know that America gets a lot of contempt from other countries for not having a national healthcare system (because seriously, what the hell), and American culture has penetrated pretty much every english-speaking country and many other non-english-speaking countries. No offense, but Americans are kind of everywhere - your movies are the ones that become blockbusters, your TV shows are the ones that don't get cancelled if in competition with non-american shows, your fast food chains are pretty much global, and you sort of make up majority of the internet. What other contemporary culture has gotten this far? Japan certainly has a cultural influence, but it's largely derivative; you're not likely to see Japanese shows on American TV unless they're anime. :B
The people who don't like America are always going to be in a whopping minority anyway, and I've found that most people who do are... kind of not the people you want to talk to anyway if they're going to judge an entire country like that. :I

I think this is the kind of thing the op is talking about. "Your" movies, "your" fast food chains, "your" tv shows. I don't think you're intentionally American hating, but it's that sort of perspective that leads to Americism. I'm American(actually I'm a US Citizen) and I have made no movies or tv shows, and own no fast food restaurants. I'm constantly frustrated by my governments imperialism and attacks against the lower classes and poor, and by the celebrity culture that has infested a large part of my countrymen/women. I'm no longer proud of my country, my fellow citizens continue to disappoint me in elections and in polls about critical issues facing humanity. There is no longer a longing for justice in America, there is a longing for a percentage. There is no more talk of civic duty, but a blind worship of the market. There is change in the air, but I worry about how much farther we will fall before that change manifests itself in real world changes to our broken collective conscience.

okay first of all i was (pretty obviously) using the general 'you'. I... I know that you don't have TV shows or fast food chains, that's not what I'm suggesting. Also I feel like it's ridiculous that me complaining about the pervasiveness of American culture in my own country is apparently 'American hating' (as though this isn't a legitimate thing to be bothered by).
But, I digress; this thread was last posted in two years ago, so I think it's pretty safe to lock it. Please pay attention to how old a thread is before you bump it! quoting posts from two years ago isn't really gonna generate much of a discussion.
