• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

    Pointless

Oh, man, Pointless. Third best quiz show. (After University Challenge and Only Connect, naturally.) Though yes. It is once in a blue moon that people pick the topic I want them to pick in the final. I think my favourite format is "here is a fact about a person, who are they". That or geography...

    Your Top 10 Favorite Movies

I'm not fond of ranking things, but when asked to name my favourite film I usually say 2001. Other films which would make the top ten... Inglourious Basterds, Let the Right One In, Lost in Translation, probably Star Wars for nostalgia reasons... I haven't thought about it that much, really...

    Doctor Who Club

If you can find it (I think I watched it on youtube at some point in the past), The Time Warrior is worth watching simply because it introduces Sarah Jane Smith.

    What are you reading? II

I have started Agamemnon, partly because I thought it would be handy for University Challenge and partly because I quite like Aeschylus. (Only later did it occur to me that, having a classicist on our team, reading Greek plays was perhaps not the most efficient use of my time.)

    What are you reading? II

I have been reading loads of Yasunari Kawabata lately. To wit: The Master of Go, Thousand Cranes, and The Sound of the Mountain. They're all excellent, especially the first.

    Valentine's Day

I am dragging Cirrus to Manchester for the University Challenge recording. Because there's nothing that says romantic like eight hours of trains in one day, right?

    Studies, Research, and Work

It's several decades later than the earliest science courses in Germany. That's not at all the same thing as several decades later than the rest of the world. Those courses were nothing like science courses as you'd think of them: they were optional, more hobby than academic discipline, and...

    Studies, Research, and Work

Er, not really. The Natural Sciences course dates to the mid-19th century. German universities (which were way ahead of everyone anyway) didn't really start teaching science until the 1820s. Cambridge was a world leader in science by the 1890s. (See! HPS is useful. :D) They do seem to really...

    Cambridge degree programs are bizarre.

Magical realism is a very divisive genre. As far as I can tell people either love it or are confused as to why other people love it.

    Worldbuilding Discussion

For what it's worth, I reckon the Irish'd stand out more. But I also don't think it's a huge problem.

    Studies, Research, and Work

I'm currently studying for a B.A. in Natural Sciences. Next year I will probably do an M.Sci. in History and Philosophy of Science. Yes, that's right: I'll have a bachelor of arts in a scientific subject and a master of sciences in a humanities subject. Specifically, I'm a biologist interested...

    Gun Control

Well, no, not in my view, but I also think most police officers shouldn't be armed. But if you were armed, it should only be in the course of your duties as a security officer.

    Gun Control

I'm sorry, but yes. For the simple reason that you are not everyone: the proper channels can only go so far. The problem of gun crime in the US is not limited to people who acquire their weapons outside the proper channels.

    Last.fm

The thought of resetting my charts sends a shiver down my spine. It's fun having over 100,000 plays. Though I guess my tastes haven't changed that much. There isn't much I listened to years ago that I don't listen to now. Anyway.

I will second her on both these points, and I found LotR impossible to get through.

    Capital punishment

I see your Mario Puzo and raise you The West Wing: This part is particularly telling: Why shouldn't his loved ones still be able to embrace him? Surely, in fact, capital punishment punishes them more than the convicted person himself?
