• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

    What are you reading? II

So I finished. The last twenty pages were the most powerful I have ever read. Heartily recommended. Now I shall start Roadside Picnic, by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. I found it fun but largely insubstantial.

    Capital punishment

Please read my first post. It's impossible to ever know for sure that someone committed a particular crime. Are you okay with your government potentially executing innocent people?

    Capital punishment

This is a topic we haven't discussed in a while, and it's also one that I think can foster a meaningful debate (unless we're all disgustingly in tune again). The poll is deliberately binary, by the way: I know there is a lot of space here for "yes, but" and "no, but" answers, but I just want to...

I got the feeling from the coming soon that that wasn't going to be the case.

    Suggest Movies for Me

Have you seen Brazil? It is a fantastic dystopian film. Last term I ran a history-of-SF-cinema series of film nights, so I can also recommend Metropolis and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Here's something I thought was pretty cool. From the Aeroflot in-flight magazine:

I'm a veteran of magical realism and I liked the first couple of pages, so my hopes are high. :D

His other series (The Stormlight Archives, first book The Way of Kings) is quite a bit better. In general Sanderson has been getting better and better, so his recent stuff is always the best. But do finish Mistborn. It's a lot of fun.

One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

What do you call sugary, carbonated, unhealthiness?

Fizzy drink, usually. I used to say soft drink before realising that was silly because it includes anything non-alcoholic.

R I have used and actually kind of enjoyed. :D I think you are going to have to unpack "using automata to quantify genome rearrangement patterns" for me. Mostly the automata bit, because I suspect what I am imagining is slightly off.

    The "Fwee" Thread

Yesterday I acquired four tickets to see Kraftwerk live at the Tate Modern. For reference: the website selling them went down immediately and stayed down all day, so I had to spend two hours in a call queue. They sold out in a few hours and are now going for two hundred quid each on ebay.

So far I have avoided having to use MATLAB in my academic career. Is it as annoying as I am led to believe? What are you doing for postgrad, anyway? I realised I am not aware of your academic inclinations beyond a vague and possibly misleading feeling that you're in some sort of molecular field.
