• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

    Greatest Fears/Phobias

Fun fact: no one has died of redback or funnelweb (arguably the two most dangerous Australian spiders) bites since antivenoms were discovered in 1956 and 1981, respectively. Though this is slightly worrying:

    Greatest Fears/Phobias

Spiders are probably the only thing I am really, deeply terrified of, and even then I'm not sure I'd call it arachnophobia. Sometimes I can handle them just fine, but sometimes I... really, really can't. (I dislike arthropods in general. But insects I can just about deal with on my own.) I used...

Your Top 10 Favorite Albums, Take 2

I have to admit, I am really not a fan of Animals. Several of the non-Big-Four albums are better (Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, The Final Cut...). ETA: Though you're right. Dogs is pretty good.

    Suggest Movies for Me

Trilogy? What trilogy? It's a good thing they never made an Alien 3, because that would have been a complete disaster and undermined everything good about the first two.

Trying to get a new desktop

For what it's worth, I would always go for nVidia GPUs over Radeon. Building desktops is indeed easy, but if you don't want to do that, look around for small computer stores that build their own custom desktops.

it's Cilan time! [animated gif thread]

I don't think he's experienced enough for you, dear - you know, he's just a bit too green.

Well, I'm glad you think so. I am head of my university's SF society and far too many of our members regard 2001 as dull. Unlike a lot of people, I think 2001 understands that beauty is a goal in and of itself - hence the very long docking sequence, and so on.

    A Survey of Favourite Things

Because who doesn't love a long survey meme? Feel free to ignore any of these if you don't have a good answer. :D Music Favourite Artist: Pink Floyd Favourite Album: Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd; Trans-Europe Express, Kraftwerk; Red, Guillemots Favourite Song: Wish You Were Here, Pink...

    Useless Facts

Not to rain on your parade, but neither of these are true. Some species of dragonfly, maybe, but definitely not all (and short lifespan is something I would much sooner associate with mayflies), and it's been shown that goldfish actually have quite good memory (for fish). ETA: And I'm almost...

    Useless Facts

This is just a simple arithmetic operation disguised by unnecessary steps. If you take 2n + 10 and divide by 2, you get n + 5; so of course subtracting n gives 5. There are much more interesting algorithms that aren't nearly as explicable. Take the Collatz conjecture. Starting from any number...

    Child Discipline

So, let me ask, you would view exactly the same scenario - a parent hitting a child - as either discipline or abuse depending on the intent of the parent? What difference does the parent's intent make to the child? The child has no idea what the parent is thinking. To the child, both cases are...

    Child Discipline

Why are you acting as if there were some clear-cut line between "child discipline" and "child abuse"? People react in different ways, and there is no way to predict ahead of time what those ways will be. If some form of child discipline damages the child, emotionally or physically, then it...

    2012 US Presidential Election

His term hasn't been much of a success because the Republican Congress is devoted to making sure Obama doesn't get re-elected. Did you know they have blocked bill after bill designed to help the economy (for example)? That bill should have passed 58 - 40, but thanks to the abuse of the...

    2012 US Presidential Election

Well, I think it's now officially close enough that I can make a thread. I follow US politics quite closely, and I'm sure there must be others who do as well! So, what do you guys think about the race? Who do you support? Who do you think will win? I'm a bit disappointed. Most boring election...

Is it necessary for a trans* person to transition?

This is a bit misleading. Yes, there are lots of possible chromosome combinations, but virtually all of them are still either male or female. The binary isn't XX/XY, but whether or not you have a Y chromosome (or, more specifically, a specific gene on the Y chromosome). The concept of intersex...

    Is Chess a Sport?

So... what does he think about other kinds of interactive art? Lots of contemporary installations are interactive in one way or another. What about concerts where the performer interacts with the audience?
