• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

    What are you reading? II

Just finished Railsea by China Mieville (during, fittingly, a seven hour train journey). It is unfair that any one writer should be this bloody talented.

    War on Drugs

Harmless, no. But it is a lot less harmful than most drugs. It is literally impossible to overdose on marijuana; the same is not true of alcohol or even caffeine. Which, in my view, makes it absurd that the former is illegal and the latter are not. Banning drugs doesn't work. That's a fact: if...

    The "Fwee" Thread

Re: The "Fwee" Thread, Mk. IV My philosophy exam just went about as well as it could have possibly gone. And I only have one more exam. Hell yes.

I don't know, I just thought there was something about the particular set-up (subset of group X belongs to dangerous militant group; therefore abridge rights for all group X) which is particularly relevant today.

I don't. I try not to analyse things as I'm watching/reading/playing them. Which is why it's even more annoying when they end up being sufficiently unsubtle that I can't not analyse them.

    Post Count & Forum Games

Some people like statistics for statistics' sake. Why should post count necessarily be for something other than counting posts?

    POSITIVE BODY FEATURES THREAD

Re: POSITIVE BODY FEATURES THREAD II I like my hands and wrists, because they're slender and well proportioned. Especially when my nails are the right length (I hate cutting my nails to the quick, it's creepy :(). Also one of my finger joints is slightly wonky, which is fun. And I like my hair...

    NaNoWriMo

If you wrote 50,000 words in one month, then spent the next nine months revising it, I'm sure you'd get the same end result. :P In fact I would wager it would go faster.

    Euthanasia

I think this is the most absurd part of your argument and no one has addressed it yet, so: do you really think people make choices in a vacuum? People don't just decide to become alcoholics. They become alcoholics because of the society they have been raised in (leaving space for genetic...

Fair warning: Judith Butler is incredibly, incredibly difficult to read.

    Euthanasia

So where's the line? Do vaccines frighten you? Do antibiotics? Do disinfectants, or bandages? Any of those things are capable of saving the life of someone who would otherwise die. What makes "machines" (and I think you greatly overestimate the extent to which machines are directly involved in...

Snare, by Katherine Kerr Kraken, by China Mieville Guns, Germs, and Steel, by Jared Diamond The Scientific Revolution, by Steven Shapin In ascending order of how much I can justifiably call them revision. :D

    I've been awarded a research bursary ^o.o^

I hate to disappoint you, but working scientists tend not to wear labcoats. :P Unless they're working with dangerous substances. And even then only sometimes.

Yourself on the internet, eight or so years ago.

Lots of people have said this. We ought to start charging.

    I've been awarded a research bursary ^o.o^

It's worth 180 quid a week and means I get to spend half my summer poking things under a microscope. :D It will be fun and educational! ... I hope.

    IRC Channel

Have you got the right port? If the SSL options are checked, it should be 6697, if not, 6667. From the looks of the error you have SSL enabled but with the wrong port.

    IRC Channel

Hi everyone! It occurred to me the other day that the only indication that a tCoD IRC channel exists is hidden out of the way in Forum Discussion, where it would be very easy to miss. So for the benefit of new and future members, we do in fact have an IRC channel (like a chat room, but not...
