Arena: Alphabetronome Battledome

The stadium itself is deceptively simple—a grassy expanse surrounded on all sides by the ususal stadium bleachers, a few large rocks scattered about, a pool of decent depth and breadth and so able to accomodate most non-wailord pokémon with relative comfort. What is not so simple is the series of small devices installed in the wall that encircles the field and separates battlers from spectators. These devices give off a bizarre energy that gives the battling pokémon the ability to use literally any move at random (with some ad-libbing where they don't have the required anatomy, e.g. walloping someone with a tail "punch" if the pokémon has no hands), not unlike a use of the move metronome. On their current setting, however, only the first move the battlers use will be completely random. The devices are connected to a computer with an alphabetical database of all known pokémon attacks, and after selecting the first move at random the devices will have that pokémon use the moves that come after that one alphabetically, in descending order and wrapping back around to absorb after zen headbutt. The devices will re-randomize a new first move at the beginning of every fourth round. (Chill is included in this database.)

Because trainers know which moves to expect on most rounds after the first, they are allowed to specify how those moves are to be performed with additional instructions or conditionals so long as the actual attacks used are not altered in any way. For example, you can order your pokémon to aim its second attack at the opponent if the first one was successful, or at one of the rocks if it wasn't. If substitute is in your list of commands you can choose how much health to put toward it, if double team is in your list you can specify the number of clones, etc.. You cannot, however, change the attack you'll have for that action or choose to do nothing.

An example of how the battle progresses:

Round 1: The trainers send out, the ref randomizes the first move for each battler and gets quick attack for Dragonair and fire spin for Eelektrik. Dragonair uses quick attack, quick guard and quiver dance, and Eelektrik uses fire spin, fissure and flail.

Round 2: Eelektrik's trainer sees that the next three moves after flail are flame burst, flame charge and flamethrower. He can't change the attacks given to him or the order they're used in, but he can tell Eelektrik to use those attacks in just about whatever manner he likes. Dragonair's trainer does the same with rage, rage powder and rain dance and the round is reffed.

Round 3: Dragonair does whatever with rapid spin, razor leaf and razor shell and Eelektrik does whatever with flame wheel, flare blitz and flash.

Round 4: The trainers do not give actual orders and the ref randomizes a new starting move: Eelektrik gets ice beam and Dragonair gets zap cannon. Eelektrik uses ice beam, ice burn and ice fang and Dragonair uses zap cannon, zen headbutt and absorb.

And so on.

The devices will re-randomize a new first move at the beginning of every fourth round. (Chill is included in this database.)

Round One: Begin

The devices ringing the arena pick up their tempo, buzzing along at a frequency too high for the gathered humans to hear but just right for setting Charles's nerves on edge. The buzzing hums around in his brain, agitating him and firing off synapses at random until the pidgey feels as though he can't contain it in his own head any longer. He lashes out with his thoughts, trying his hardest to search out Squirt's mind and do something, anything to transfer all of that annoyance from his brain into hers; try as he might, however, he cannot focus properly through the combination of irritation, distraction and trying to use an unfamiliar attack, and by the time the buzzing and humming quiets down he is unable to break into the squirtle's head.

As such, Squirt is blissfully unaware of her opponent's attempts to attack her, interpreting the look of consternation on his face as the result of some sort of bad taste in his mouth. She can certainly sympathize—ever since that odd buzzing noise increased in volume she's had a very uncomfortable feeling in the back of her throat, almost as if some of the water in her internal water sac is starting to go stale and congeal inside of her. It's one of the most unpleasant sensations she's experienced in a while, and as she'd rather not continue to experience it she is quick to turn and spit the foul water out in Charles's general direction. The strands of sticky goop that squirt out are quite a ways away from being water, and rather than sliding off of the pidgey's brown plumage the substance clings to and gums up the feathers on one of his wings. Charles balks and flaps the affected wing wildly, but to no avail—the string shot remains as sticky and stubborn as before, and after a few moments he is forced to stop or risk sticking even more feathers together with his flailing.

Charles's wing feels a little heavy and quite awkward when the obnoxious buzzing crescendoes again, and he is reluctant to act when the buzzing demands that he put on a burst of speed. His hesitance lasts all of half a second, however—the buzzing of the alphabetronome devices will not be denied, and before the pidgey can do any more mental complaining he is hurtling forward, his wings tearing through the air and propelling him straight into Squirt's carapace. Even with the string shot gooping up Charles's feathers he has more than enough momentum to bowl the squirtle right over. Caught by surprise and equally irritated by the buzzing noises, Squirt swings her arms wildly and pounds away at the little bird sprawled on top of her with clenched fists. Her panicked drubbing and smashing is a little less than accurate, and half of her strikes hit her own chest rather than her opponent; still, by the time the pidgey flaps his way off of her and back to a safe distance she has given him a decent bruise or two.

The buzzing and ringing in Charles's ears continues unabated, as do its demands that he ignore the silly string gumming his wing up and throw himself at Squirt again. There is a hint of suggestion that he tap into his fury about being sick and inconvenienced, but aside from the aforementioned wing he doesn't actually feel all that bad. As such, when he wings his way forward and barrels into the battered squirtle a second time, it is not with all of the force that the alphabetronome devices might have desired. It is still enough to set the squirtle flailing all over again, this time with a pale, greenish energy surrounding each of her hands. The energy actually seems to reduce the effectiveness of her strikes, leaving Charles relatively unscathed compared to her previous struggling; still, the energy leaves the pidgey with a very uncomfortable tingling sensation that he can't quite shake. He tries hard to focus on the damage he was able to do rather than his growing discomfort.

Round Two: Begin

Even with his feathers still mired by the string shot Charles is still quicker on the draw than his opponent, and with an eager chirp he allows the buzzing in his ears to help him dissolve into the shadows—anything if it will help him leave this awkward discomfort behind. Squirt barely has enough time to wonder just where the bird has vanished to before her question is answered with a head-on collision from behind. Charles rematerializes and throws himself at the startled squirtle, crashing right into her shell and nearly knocking her off-balance before fluttering hurriedly away. Squirt scrambles to attack him while he's still relatively close to her, spitting out more of... something that isn't water from her water sac and trying to coat the pidgey with the resulting pale powder, but Charles is able to get away and back to his side of the arena before any of the stun spores can reach him.

Then he doubles back without warning, the irritating buzzing suddenly compelling him to pull an about-face and smack Squirt across her face while she's still dazed by his earlier faint attack. The feathery slap is honestly not all that painful, Squirt realizes when she reflects on it later, but it does throw her off-kilter again. She stumbles forward, arms outstretched, and makes a clumsy grab at Charles that misses wide when he darts back to his original position again.

Two misses in a row after being forced into a very weak and uncomfortable set of moves doesn't sit well with Squirt at all, and as the humming noises continue unabated she is almost on the verge of tears—what stupid thing are these moronic machines trying to make her do now?. She is surprised, then, when she sees that Charles actually does land on the ground, sniffle for a second or two and, without warning, burst into tears. Even more surprising is the way he starts to plead with her: oh, please, Squirt, please don't do all of these horrible things to me... I don't want to get hurt, and those moves you've been using are so dangerous and I don't know what I'd do if... if you... The bird's sniveling is pitiful, in more ways than one, and Squirt isn't quite sure she buys it. Hasn't Charles been the lucky one thus far? Still... salty water streams down his face and leaves dark streaks in the brown feathers, and as bizarre as the situation seems she can't help but feel that the pidgey's tears are genuine.

And that, to be frank, makes her a little uncomfortable. Maybe she'll feel better if she doesn't have to sit so close to him while he's bawling like that. The buzzing sound seems to have the right idea—she spits another viscous substance onto the grass in front of her, this one thankfully a lot more familiar than the others, and prods it here and there until it vaguely resembles a transparent squirtle. She plants the completed substitute firmly between herself and Charles, then scoots back and covers her ears for a little while. The sub can be his shoulder to cry on for now, and she can get back to trying to make sense of this stupid humming and her terrible luck.

Round Three: Begin

In Squirt's (admittedly limited) experience, covering an opponent in that nasty sticky string should ordinarly slow them down and make them easier to strike. Charles's continued ability to evade her every attempt at serious harm is thus puzzling, not to mention irritating. When the buzzing fills her with a sudden burst of energy, then, the squirtle appreciates it—as the same low-key hum spurs Charles into action, urging the pidgey to flutter across the field and dive for Squirt, she pulls her fist back and skips forward from behind her substitute with more speed than she'd managed to muster in a very long time. Caustic dark energy cloaks her clenched fist seconds before it collides with the charging Charles, knocking the bird clear out of the air and sending him skidding back a foot or two.

The surprise attack leaves Charles reeling for a moment—the heck did that turn of speed come from—and by the time he picks himself up and resumes winging his way forward Squirt has already ducked behind the slimy substitute she'd created earlier. The quick swipe Charles is at last able to muster is easily intercepted by the watery construct, too, and the thin scratch he leaves along its face heals itself as soon as it appears. The pidgey narrows his eyes irritably. What happened to the moves he'd been using before? Most of those had been pretty cool.

At least the next suggestion whispered to him amidst all the humming is a very familiar one. He doesn't need any nerve-wracking buzzing to tell him how to featherdance. He flutters upward, stopping his ascent several yards above both squirtle and substitute and circling overhead. He dips, twists and turns, shedding gummed-up feathers with every graceful flick of his wings. The elegant swooping and twirling would surely be a mesmerizing sight if Squirt were actually paying any attention to it; she is too busy doing a little dance of her own, eyes closed and arms up toward the sun in prayer, however, so the emotionless substitute serves as Charles's only audience. He can feel the heat of the sun growing warmer on his back as he comes down for a frustrated landing, but for once he would rather pay more attention to the devices' buzzing.

As it turns out, unfortunately, actually attempting to listen to them does not make them more inclined to teach him any particularly devastating new attacks. Instead Charles finds himself darting forward for another pitifully light hit that is once again intercepted by a quick sidestep by Squirt's doppelganger. The two quick feints have hardly damaged the construct at all—it continues to stare balefully at Charles with soulless eyes, and as ridiculous as it looks with a few tawny feathers still sticking to it it is nevertheless solidly in his way.

Squirt comes out of her sun-searching trance and presents herself properly in short order, her mouth open as wide as it will go under the orders of the constant hum. Brilliant golden energy burns between her jaws, stretching itself into two long, wicked spears of light that hang down on either side of her beak. Squirt moves around her substitute and dashes toward her retreating opponent, managing to grab his still-sticky tailfeathers in one hand after an awkward lunge. Pidgey and squirtle crash into the turf together, and amidst the wild tangle of flailing arms, legs and wings Squirt manages to sink her new fangs right into Charles's side. The super fangs penetrate deep, drawing a protracted scream out of the bird as lances of pain shoot through him and agitate almost every nerve in his body; by the time Squirt releases him and backs away, panting with the effort of controlling that much energy, Charles is a whimpering wreck trying to curl up on the grass.

Round Four: Begin

Without warning the buzzing in Charles's ears is drowned out by a rushing noise—the sound of watery energy building up around him and then propelling him forward like a jet. Almost predictably after his poor luck from last round, however, the resulting impact with Squirt's substitute is entirely forgettable. The slimy construct effortlessly bounces back to its former near-pristine state, the dimple Charles's paltry attack left on its shell disappearing in seconds; Charles, on the other hand, lets himself drop to the turf with a dejected look in his eyes. Everything hurts, nothing is working...

Flopping onto his back proves to be a poor decision, as when the buzzing urges Squirt forward it is not to sprinkle water on something that is already wet. She skips around her motionless substitute with one arm raised, white energy stretching from the tips of her tiny claws, and drags those claws across the pidgey's exposed belly. Charles screeches as they cut into his skin and pull several creamy feathers loose, but before he can try to strike back the assault is over and Squirt is behind her body double again, panting.

The last thing Charles wants to hear, especially after his worthless aqua jet and one too many sticky intercepts from the substitute, is the sound of more water, but he is, as ever, subject to the cruel whims of the buzzing alphabetronome devices. Even if they intended this second ring of watery energy as a boon—and, Charles has to admit, he does feel just a little bit better as the energy condenses into tangible water droplets and trickles along his various stinging cuts and bruises—water and pidgey feathers simply do not get along, and the wetness from the aqua ring leaves the little bird feeling uncomfortable and heavy overall.

Squirt, meanwhile, is still loitering behind her substitute and trying to catch her breath. This sudden burst of awesome sure is taking a lot out of her. And the humming devices seem inclined to give her more. Dark thoughts begin to collect in the back of Squirt's mind, a sense of resentment and simmering anger that she's not quite sure is her own; when the negative energy becomes too much for the turtle to bear she casts it out, sending a wave of pure darkness through the air and across the quiet battlefield. The dark pulse passes cleanly through Charles's misty aqua ring and washes over the sodden pidgey, only adding to his mounting discomfort and dismay. The aqua ring's cool drizzle is little consolation—Squirt has gone from poking uselessly at him to nearly leaving him senseless in a matter of one round, and as far as he's concerned things are starting to look hopeless.

Getting back up and into the air is suddenly a chore for Charles, the aqua ring still drizzling away around him and making his feathers wet. Most of the improvised string shot from before has been washed away, true, but he's not much faster while damp and weighed down. He moans audibly when he catches yet another ring of blue out of the corner of his eye. More water. This surge of energy doesn't throw him forward the way the aqua jet did, and so it is on Charles to pick himself up and half-flutter, half-hop forward. His movements are about as quick and graceful as a magikarp, and, as usual, Squirt's substitute has no trouble stepping into his path in more than enough time to receive the sudden about-face and watery tail slap intended for its creator. To his credit, the lashing of energy does manage to leave a mark in the doppelganger at long last and in spite of the type disadvantage—part of the substitute collapses and dissolves, leaving the remaining construct lopsided and no longer accurately squirtle-shaped.

But it is still standing, even if only just, and that means that Squirt is clear to call on her borrowed inner darkness once again. This time the negativity that wells up inside of her is heavier, more intense, and a part of her almost feels as if she's drawing on something that she really shouldn't be touching. The humming in her ears seems to draw out into a series of long, haunting moans, black clouds fade into being around her fingers, and almost without meaning to she points her arms at the miserable, sodden Charles and sends the wisps of pure darkness in his direction. The wisps stretch, twist and warp as they snake their way through the air, contorting around themselves and, by the time they reach the now visibly frightened pidgey, collecting into one large, hovering void of empty blackness.

Charles's eyes go wide as the void edges closer to him, unable to tear his terrified gaze away. Then, all of a sudden, his eyelids begin to droop and he lists forward, falling face-first to the ground and closing his eyes completely only moments later. Whether something within the darkness lulled him to sleep, or else whatever incomprehensible things he saw in the midst of all of that nothing scared him into passing out, is hard to say, but whatever the cause the pidgey is out cold—for now, anyway. Squirt sighs and slumps against her deformed substitute, feeling utterly drained but still managing a smile. Now that was cool.

The droning of the devices in her ears is almost hypnotic in her weary state, and for a moment she is so zoned out that she doesn't notice its steady increase in volume as the seconds drag on. Then she sees it—first only visible as a black cloud moving in from the distance but revealing itself to be a swarm of buzzing insects as it draws nearer. The buzzing bees circle around the tired squirtle, occasionally passing over the snoring Charles as they hem in ever closer, until they form a tightly-knit living shield around her. Squirt's eyes go wide for a second or two and she pulls her arms a little ways into her shell, loath to give the insects an opening to sting her, but to her surprise they make no move to attack.

Even with the protection of both her substitute and the detail of bees, however, Squirt is swaying on her feet and about ready to collapse. Charles is still sound asleep, and since between that and her various guards he poses no threat whatsoever... there's... there's no real harm in relaxing in her shell for a little while, is there? She sighs and drops to her belly, more out of exhaustion than intention, and tucks her limbs into her shell one by one. First the left leg, then the... right leg... then the... left... arm...

Her right arm, head and tail never make it into the safety of her shell. Even that little bit of exertion is too much for Squirt, and she blacks out after a few seconds of trying to convince her right arm to pull back. She joins Charles in the realm of the unconscious at long last—the only difference is that Charles will only require a bit of time and perhaps a firm shake or two to open his eyes again, while Squirt won't be waking up without the assistance of the pokémon center.

Ref's Notes
-Squirt ran out of energy and fainted on the second action.
-The match is over and Barubu is the winner. He gets $8 and Charles gets 2 exp; thunder gets $3 and Squirt gets 1 exp; I get $5 for reffing. Thanks for playing along with my little experiment, you two; shame Squirt had to roll such an energy-intensive move, or else this could've gone on longer.
