Pathos vs Lucas755 | Round One
2vs2 double
Style: Set
DQ: Standard week
Damage Cap: 50%
Banned Moves: OHKO's
Arena: Chernobyl
Set in the city of (wait for it) Chernobyl, the arena is a complete disaster zone. Nothing has been touched for years and wilderness has taken over. Image of what the place looks like.
Every action there is a 10% chance any pokemon in the battle will become poisoned by radiation. If they are already poisoned, there is a 10% chance it will increase in severity. If it doesn't increase in severity, it can fade like normal (according to the ref/RNG). Obviously, poison and steel types are immune to this.
Years ago, this was the site of one of the worst nuclear accidents known to mankind. The entire city was destroyed, flushing out the human population, and the meltdown made headlines across the globe. Even today, radiation levels are high enough that people by and large stay away, giving the local wildlife a chance to flourish. Steel- and electric-type pokémon glance out from under the shadows of the greenery, and poison-types raise their heads at an unexpected disturbance.
With the usual Asberian disregard for safety and common sense, two trainers and a referee (at least, these are their roles today) stroll across a dirt path until they near the centre of the accident, a collapsed building not far from the tower. It is possible this is the worst possible location for them, but none of the three seem to care. They take their positions on the battlefield. The referee pulls out a list of their allowed pokémon—with a minor correction by Pathos—and declares the attack order.
Pathos casually tosses two poké balls onto the field, and each ball spits a shape floating above the ground. A zubat shakes the light off his wings, but it seems for a moment that his metal companion has captured the light into a permanent brilliant sheen. But, as the magnemite moves, it becomes obvious that it’s simply the sunlight reflecting off flakes that must be embedded in its armour.
Lucas glances over the two, showing no reaction to the contrast between Zerzin’s brilliance and the eerie aura clinging to Alec and his fluttering cape, and releases his own pokémon. Lillipup appears with a cheerful bark, while Venomoth remains calmer, merely observing his opponents.
Lillipup blinks, then realises to her horror that Zerzin is
sparkling in the sunlight. Who even
does that?
She might have been more eager to see Zerzin in a broken, burning heap by the end of the battle if not for the fluttering at the edge of their fields of vision. Alec flies in a circle, but the wispy black cloth tied to his neck flutters as though carried on its own breeze, completely unaffected by the winds of this world. Lillipup shivers and chances a glance at her more experienced partner. It’s hard to tell with Venomoth, but Lillipup thinks that he, too, is eying Alec anxiously. At least she’s not alone in that—the bat is
creepy.
So she’s not pleased when she’s told to pay attention to, and target, Alec for most of the round. Then again, she’d be keeping an eye on him throughout this anyway, because she doesn’t want him to sneak up on her or anything, and at least she doesn’t have to get near him.
Venomoth, for his part, is perfectly fine with targeting Zerzin this round, as it’s a rare opportunity for a bug to prove himself against steel.
Pathos, though, doesn’t intend to make it easy, and orders both of his pokémon to help each other, at least at first. If Zerzin is at all reluctant to take a potentially-crippling hit for its teammate, it doesn’t show it. It spares a second to glare at Lillipup, then its eye settles on Venomoth.
Alec, meanwhile, is relieved to avoid paralysis, as difficulty flying would leave him all but helpless. And, more importantly, he can avenge the attempt without any harm to himself. Alec bares his fangs at Lillipup, his cape billowing behind him. Lillipup shifts, glaring, though she wonders if Alec does not in fact have eyes.

Actions
Even as Zerzin floats toward Alec to protect him from harm, its concentration is elsewhere. It waits, poised to shoot off a magic coat in what might be a split second between a thin bolt of electricity and a blast of powder in its face, when it sees that Venomoth is already moving toward it, much faster than Lillipup’s trot toward them. Zerzin blinks, surprised—it had assumed, from what its trainer said, that this wouldn’t be the case—then quickly focuses until a thin layer of shimmering energy covers it, making it even shinier than before.
Venomoth’s wings, too, glitter in the sunlight, and with a forceful flap of its wings, releases a cloud of dust meant to cover Zerzin. However, to Venomoth’s chagrin, the cloud of powder misses entirely and slowly settles on the floor. It doesn’t even have the good grace to accidentally hit the magnemite’s partner, either. Of course, he’s not the only one annoyed by this; Zerzin stares at the thinning cloud still low over the ground and ponders rolling in it. It doesn’t know if this will do anything, or if it would have to breathe in the powder through means it doesn’t have in order to manage what its trainer wants, but it’s too late to do anything now. And Lillipup is still coming toward it, with an alert expression on her face; it doesn’t see her producing any electricity yet, but can it drop the magical coating before she gets off a quick jolt? A thunder wave takes no time at all, in its experience, at least. It should have predicted this, somehow. This was such a waste of time, when it could have freed up an action to start causing harm, and now…?
Lillipup has similar concerns. Though Alec isn’t much faster than she is, he was much closer to Zerzin at the start, and he’s already gotten close enough to use his companion as a shield, even clinging to Zerzin’s magnets with his legs. When she tries walking around them, Zerzin just turns on the spot, and she quickly realises she’s not going to get anywhere. It doesn’t mean a thunder wave is right out, because paralysing a sparkling ball could also be helpful, but she’s pretty sure that
thing coating it is going to interfere with her attack.
While she considers this, Alec adjusts his hold on Zerzin’s magnets, then flaps his wings. He calls on the air around him to move with the air he’s manually pushing, if only for a little while, and feels the air comply. A wind begins to blow from behind them with an unknown source. Still, Alec’s cape flutters as though the wind is blowing into his front instead, as though it inhabits its own ethereal realm.
But it doesn’t matter, Lillipup tells herself. None of it matters. It’s just a cloth, probably not even doing anything, and it’s not going to mean anything to her. You know why? Because she’s
awesome, and she can
do this. She doesn’t need sparkles to feel pretty, or a cape to feel cool. She’s got all those qualities already. You know why? Because she’s
Lillipup. Hell yeah!
The unnatural light fades from Zerzin’s body, though it’s still as shiny as ever.
Alright, Venomoth decides, so putting Zerzin to sleep didn’t work. But he knows that what he intends to do next won’t fail, even if it’s difficult to look at Zerzin due to the random spots of brilliance on its body. It briefly concentrates, then vibrates its wings as fast as it can. All of the pokémon hear a low whine as his wings quicken. Zerzin, placed in an unfortunate location where the sonic waves crash through its body, feels the full effects. It vibrates with the sound waves, dislodging Alec more quickly than the zubat himself could manage. Alec himself shakes with the blast, his sensitive ears ringing even as he flies out of the way.
Alec shakes off the buzzing and, remembering that he’ll be the target of another thing he wishes to avoid, quickly shoots up through the sky, too high for the others to reach.
Zerzin eyes Venomoth, shaking its magnets as though it would get rid of the buzzing noise. But, though Venomoth interprets it as a glare for harming it, Zerzin’s thinking of something far more complex. It focuses on Venomoth to determine everything the massive insect is doing, the way he flies and how he moves. The way he attacked, Zerzin can tell, is something different than usual, and that’s what it wants to mimic most. Forget that it’s a magnet. This is far more important. He tries bulging out his eye (a futile attempt), and flutters his magnets like wings. Then, quietly, he emits a hum of his own, though it sounds entirely unlike Venomoth’s buzzing.
Meanwhile, Lillipup stares up after her opponent. Okay, so obviously her attack’s not going to reach, so what she has to do is… just remind herself of how epic she is, right? Because for all his eerie-ghost-like posturing, that stupid bat is a
coward. She can totally tell that he was running away from
her, hiding out of reach only because he knows he can’t face up to her. She wags her tail, pumped up and ready to go. She stares at Alec as though she dares him to come back down here.
Alec promptly does so, angling back down and smacking into her large head. She yelps, stumbling backward, and glares at him. He circles above her once, snickering, but at least he doesn’t fly off and out of the way again. Instead, he glows with a black aura, and continues circling her, as though waiting.
It takes a moment for Venomoth to realise that Zerzin’s trying to be
him, and it’s not an entirely flattering portrayal, although that might just be because Zerzin doesn’t have the means to do so. Well then, Zerzin will come to regret that. Venomoth vibrates his wings once again, and this time Zerzin is the only one taking the full brunt of the attack. Waves of sound crash through it, shaking everything inside and sending vibrations through its outer shell. This time, though, it staggers as its magnets flutter, slightly off-balance, and only recovers once it can right its magnets again.
Well then, Zerzin decides, he won’t let that happen again. At least, not like that. He focuses once again, ready to protect both itself and his teammate, but this time, the only required sacrifice is a bit of energy. Walls of light almost as brilliant as Zerzin himself appear around them.
Lillipup then concentrates on drawing out her energy. She’s ready to shape it into a doll in order to protect herself, but before she can tap into her own life energy, something black lashes out at her and draws back into Alec’s aura. Lillipup blinks, suddenly finding her concentration gone. She whines and looks around for the source, when she sees something odd.
As though not entirely in control of himself, Alec carves out a chunk of his life energy and pushes it out in a blob of toxic purple goop. He spits it out, but before it can fall, buffets it with his wings. The wind itself pats the goop into shape, and it quickly solidifies into a childish imitation of a zubat. Still, the life-size doll seems to have no problem flapping its wings to keep close to Alec, which it does as though its life depends on it.
