Terrain: Outside the Battle Arena

The battle takes place right outside the Battle Frontier's Battle Arena facility, out in the open air. The immediate area is covered in nicely manicured grass and a few flowers. The Arena building itself is surrounded on three sides by water and a small pond sits on the other side of the battlers, so water moves can be used and Water-types that need to swim can do so. The battlers cannot move away from the immediate area, so heading towards the plaza or another facility is forbidden.

Since this match is happening so close to the Arena, it seems such a shame not to follow Greta's rules... or, at least, a variation on them. As such, both battlers will send out their PokÈmon and attack for three battle rounds (a total of 9 attacks per PokÈmon) before the ref calls a halt. After the three rounds both PokÈmon are recalled and unable to continue in the current battle, and their current health, energy and status are noted for later. Both trainers will then send out their next Pokémon and continue for the next three rounds. At the end (which should be nine total rounds), the health and energy of all Pokémon is totaled and whichever trainer has the highest score wins.

The following rules also apply:

-If a Pokémon has fainted, either due to HP loss OR energy loss, the battle stops right where it is (even if it has not yet been three rounds) and both Pokémon are recalled. Fainted PokÈmon DO still count toward the final score, but as either their health or their energy is at 0% they won't add anywhere near as much.

-If, at the end of the three rounds, a battler is afflicted with a status condition, that condition detracts from their final score as follows:

Paralyzed, Burned, Confused: -10 points
Poisoned, Attracted: -15 points
Asleep, Frozen: -20 points

If the Pokémon has more than one status condition, only the first one they were afflicted with detracts full points; all others afterwards only detract five, no matter what they are.

A small patch of grass outside the Battle Arena has been roped off and currently stands empty beneath a clear blue Hoenn sky. The little flowers peppering the grass within the enclosure don't know just how lucky they are--their friends and family outside the boundary are getting trampled to death by the gathering of sweaty bystanders who've shown up to watch the upcoming match.

The heat in Hoenn's high summer is tremendous, and all present are fanning themselves with crumpled brochures about the championships, enjoying the breeze flung from battery-operated fans, or armed with water bottles and sun hats. There is more than one comment to the effect that this all could have been done
inside the Battle Arena, where there is actually air conditioning, and these are blissfully ignored by the league officials scattered throughout the crowd.

The bellyaching dies down as soon as the first trainer arrives, though; the crowd parts at the sight of the registration badge pinned to their shirt, and all gripes fall silent as they step over the rope and into the arena. Across the field from them, their opponent does likewise.

The flowers in the arena bob and sway as a light breeze whips through the crowd and a referee materializes at one edge of the field, raising flags. For the moment, they're lucky--but only time will tell how the battle might overturn their little paradise.

ohcrap I'm against Kratos.

welp.

I'll use my Togekiss, L'arc-En-Ciel, then.

Re: Full Metal Cookies vs Kratos Aurion

After much deliberation, I think I'll go with Zef Barra.

You're faster, so go ahead and get in a Taunt before L'Arc can do anything else; if he Protects, Bulk Up instead. Continue this until you get Taunt to stick. Once it has use Ice Beam for however many actions are left; if he tries to use Fly to get away then see if you can't get him while taking off or landing. If he stays in the air then just keep using Bulk Up if he's unreachable.

Re: Full Metal Cookies vs Kratos Aurion

:I oog. Well, Let's see if we can work with this, Arccy. Start the round off by Flying up - stay in the air for the whole round, and try to dodge those Ice Beams best you can. Pelt him with Aura Spheres from a distance.

Re: Full Metal Cookies vs Kratos Aurion

Speculation abounds as the assembled spectators discuss the upcoming match, the first one on the schedule. Full Metal Cookies and Kratos Aurion are both well-known and well-established members of the league, and a sizeable crowd has turned up in the anticipation of an exciting match. A hush falls over the bystanders as the two trainers step into the arena and the referee announces the opening of the match.

Kratos Aurion is the first to choose a pokémon, and in a flash of white energy, Zef Barra the floatzel takes shape on the manicured grass. The water type stretches luxuriously, shaking himself out down to the tips of his tails, and grins around at the crowd. Full Metal Cookies takes a few moments to decide on a pokémon of her own, but at last she pulls a pokéball from her belt and sends it spinning to the turf. L'arc-En-Ciel the togekiss takes shape, to a murmur of general excitement; the genetically-modified togekiss looks radically different from most individuals of his species, and cameras and phones go off in a flurry of excitement as members of the crowd record their encounter with the unique pokémon.

The referee's flags go up, orders are shouted, and the pokÈmon tense--and the crowd tenses with them, eager to witness the first match in the second round of this year's championship tournament.

Zef Barra flashes L'arc his most dazzling smile and smoothes a bit of his fur down with a paw. Well, look at what we have here, he says. Here you've got someone as handsome as me on this side of the arena, and I've got to get myself all mussed up fighting someone as ugly as you. What a waste! And, honestly, you'd think with all that trouble they went through engineering you up, they could have taken the time to make sure the finished product looked halfway decent. I mean, really, yellow stripes and red wings--who thought that was okay?

L'arc glowers at Zef and kicks off from the ground, aforementioned red wings whoomphing as he gains altitude. What a jerk, the togekiss thinks as the floatzel dwindles away below, his taunts growing all the louder and more desperate as he tries to attract L'arc's attention. Annoyed by Zef's taunts but refusing to lose his cool, L'arc ascends until the floatzel is no more than a orange yellow dot far below and he can have a bit of peace and quiet.

Coward! Zef screams after L'arc's dwindling shape. Too scared to fight me, huh, huh? Running away, are you? Get back here and fight! But it's no good--the togekiss is well out of earshot by now. Fuming, and far more worked up by his own attack (or its failure) than L'arc, Zef grits his teeth and clenches his paws. Well, he'll show that stuck-up lab freak some real power, then! The floatzel's muscles bulge as he forces energy into them, feeding furious cell division and a sudden gain in muscle mass.

Above, L'arc begins gathering energy between his clawed feet, a stormy orb of green-blue light swirling into existence as the togekiss pulls power out of his inner reserves. Once the aura sphere's complete, L'arc spreads his claws and lets it drop, and it zips away at an angle, heading straight for Zef Barra. The floatzel has only just started flexing for the crowd when the aura sphere slams into him from behind, driving him face-first into the grass.

Zef is back up in an instant, spitting dirt out of his mouth and snarling at the circling speck of L'arc above. There's no way he can hope to lob an ice beam all the way up there, though, so he's got no choice but to invest in some future payback with another bulk up. The floatzel's muscles expand even more, lending him still greater strength and protection from physical blows, while up above L'arc is cooking up another aura sphere. This time Zef is more ready for the attack when it comes shooting down and doesn't fall over as it strikes, but it leaves him shaken and more irritated than ever.

Re: Full Metal Cookies vs Kratos Aurion

This is going pretty awesome so far, I like this strategy. So, first I want you to stat up with Nasty Plot; follow up with two Aura Spheres. Remember to stay in the sky, or as far away as you can from him if you get forced to the ground for any reason. If you cannot attack him for any reason, use Nasty Plot again.

Re: Full Metal Cookies vs Kratos Aurion

Question, Negrek. How high is "high altitude", exactly?

Re: Full Metal Cookies vs Kratos Aurion

Well, I was probably exaggerating a bit when I said "high altitude," since that wouldn't make much sense for a battle situation, but... 150 meters.

Re: Full Metal Cookies vs Kratos Aurion

Hm. Well, that's rather higher than I would've preferred, but what can you do? Pesky flying-types. Well, Zef, start with a good Natural Gift; since you have no sig move it should be that normal-type Aura Sphere, and running off of your attack stat to boot. Judging by Aura Sphere's reduced damage the distance isn't going to help things, but see if you can't hit a wing and maybe knock him down. Just keep it up for the last two actions, then, which by my calculations will put you two more or less on par overall (I hope). If you can knock L'Arc down to the ground, or at least to the point where you think Ice Beam will be able to reach him, switch to that instead (and back to Natural Gift if he gets too far out of range again).

Zef squints up into the sky as glittering green sparks start to shed from his fur. Maybe he can't really see L'arc, but at least he can still attack. Calling on his deepest reserves of strength, Zef gathers blinding white energy between his paws, then hurls it into the air, where it stretches out into a long streak of power that seeks out its like in L'arc's hear, curving around midair in order to strike the togekiss dead on.

L'arc is understandably surprised when the white bolt of energy comes rocketing up from below, but he manages to recover with a few hasty flaps. So it turns out he isn't as safe up here as he had thought; this is going to take a bit of planning. The togekiss' brow furrows as he bends his concentration towards coming up with a way to win this fight. As the togekiss' concentration and determination ramps up a notch, he figures out how to more efficiently use his energy and bring even more hurt to his opponent.

Zef is unaware of what the togekiss is planning; all he knows is that he hasn't had to endure another aura sphere. There's not much to do but take another shot in the dark, so he concentrates on pulling together another natural gift, his enhanced muscles only lending more bite to the mysterious attack. The blast of normal type energy shocks L'arc right out of his plotting. The togekiss wobbles, flapping madly, then steadies out to a slow cruise again. Though the natural gifts haven't been striking his wings squarely, a few red feathers drift lazily towards the earth, ripped free by the edge of the powerful attacks.

No more time for planning; it's time for L'arc to put his ideas into practice. He gathers energy for another aura sphere, this one noticeably bigger than the ones that came before, and smirks. Bombs away!

Zef is far from thrilled as the aura sphere comes whistling down from above and slams into his head. Grumbling to himself, the floatzel rubs at his skull for a moment before sending another natural gift skyward. It takes L'arc a bit longer to recover from this one; his wings are starting to look decidedly ragged, and he wobbles uncertainly even as he draws up energy for an aura sphere. It's getting a bit hard for him to fly and attack at the same time; he's not sure how many more of those natural gifts he'll be able to take before he'll have to land or crash.

Unfortunately for Zef, he has no idea of the togekiss' troubles; the aura sphere that crashes down from above is at least as strong as the ones that came before, and so far as he can tell L'arc has no intention of returning to earth. The floatzel glares up at the sky and growls. Coward...

*shrug* Let's just be boring old broken records and keep spamming Natural Gift, Zef, "aiming for the wings" as before. If he comes within Ice Beaming range then let him have it, again trying to time it right as he's coming in or trying to take off, if at all possible. If he's ever visible and it's clear that he's using Protect, chill, but if you can't tell then don't worry about it. Oh, and if he actually lands, crashes or is otherwise in contact with the ground, try to angle the Ice Beam so that you're firing downwards on him--let's freeze the nasty little egg birdy to the pretty flowers, shall we?

Zef gathers himself for another natural gift, green motes of light sparkling in the air around him as he charges up. As he releases the attack, he can only watch the bolt of white light disappear into the sky overhead and hope that it has an effect. L'arc rocks back in the air as the attack strikes, muttering curses to himself and fluttering madly as the splash of energy vaporizes a few more of his feathers. By now his wings are looking decidedly ragged, and it's no more gliding for him--he can only stay aloft with real effort. And trying to fly and charge an aura sphere at the same time is a difficult proposition.

The togekiss continues to grumble under his breath, alternately concentrating on pouring energy into his attack and stabilizing himself as his inattention causes him to start to slip. The result is a kind of circling, fluttering downward movement until L'arc lets his aura sphere go. Zef staggers as the powerful ball of energy slams into his back; it's only been two full rounds, but he's really starting to feel his injuries already.

Another glance up at the sky improves his spirits a bit, though. Maybe he's just imagining things, but L'arc looks a bit larger than he did before. The floatzel grimaces a bit as he draws a bead on the drifting togekiss overhead, aiming very carefully at what he hopes is a wing. And this time, when he releases his natural gift, he gets lucky. The attack arcs around and slams directly into L'arc's left wing, vaporizing most of the remaining feathers and sending the togekiss into a screeching tumble.

L'arc flaps desperately with his good wing and tries to steer with his club-tipped tail, but he can only slow himself so much. Ultimately, he finds himself coming in for a landing much harder than he would have liked, smacking into the ground belly-first and skidding through the grass, the breath crushed out of his lungs and his attempts to get his feet under him in order to stop only sending him into an awkward tumble. The togekiss finally flops to a halt on his back at the end of a long streak of flattened flowers and shed feathers, coughing weakly and staring up at the sky in a daze.

A shadow falls across L'arc, and the togekiss' view of the sun is blocked by a weaselly orange face. Hello there, Zef says with a nasty smile, his words coming out with puffs of condensation. L'arc gulps and starts trying to flip himself over, but there's no time--a moment later Zef fires a crackling bolt of blue light from his mouth that flashes into solid ice as soon as it touches L'arc's feathers. The togekiss screeches and struggles more violently as the floatzel's ice beam moves out along his injured wing, freezing what's left of it securely to the grass.

The awful burning cold does give L'arc some serious incentive to get moving, though, and Zef backs off as the togekiss' claws dig into the earth and he manages to heave himself upright, twisting awkwardly to compensate for the wing still stuck tightly to the ground. Golden motes of light shimmer around the togekiss' striped crest as he draws deep of the light of the sun overhead--it might not be shining as brightly as he had planned, but there's still plenty for him to work with. Zef crouches, tails twitching, as he watches the togekiss powering up. He isn't prepared for what's coming next, though; L'arc's eyes glow a vibrant gold for a moment before the togekiss releases a tremendous column of solar energy straight at his opponent.

Zef tries to twist away but isn't fast enough--the solarbeam catches him full along the side, and for several seconds his world is lost in a howling roar of burning light. As the solarbeam fades away into motes of gold and green light and the spectators are able to open their eyes and look again, they find Zef twitching on the grass, blinking eyes that register little more than smears of red and purple afterimages. Neither the floatzel nor the grounded togekiss has to suffer for much longer, however; at a sign from the referee, they both vanish back into their pokÈballs to make way for the trainers' next fighters.

- L'arc's first aura sphere took more energy than usual because of how much difficulty he was having flying.
- Zef's second natural gift was a critical hit.
- Returning to earth after using fly usually takes a full action anyway, but L'arc was totally preoccupied with trying to land and unable to use sunny day on the second action.
- Kratos has let me know that he'll be using Sancho Panza the lucario next round. Full Metal Cookies, post your pokÈmon and attacks.

Oop, late response. Sorry 'bout that.

Anyway, I'll use Philharmonic, my Chatot.

Start off the round by using Fly to get some altitude on you (why yes I do like this tactic). Attack with Heat Wave for the rest of the round. If he uses Protect/Detect or some other thing where you can't reach him, use Double Team.

Fly Up ~ Heat Wave/Double Team ~ Heat Wave/Double Team

Hm. Tempted to just try and ground li'l Phil with a heavy duty Extremespeed to the wing, but that may not work too well... why risk it when we can turn their own tactic against them--and better, too? So Sancho, while Phil flies up, up, up, you are going to Dig down, down, down. Actually the hole doesn't need to be that deep, but if you can just dig down for a little bit and then to the side at a ninety-degree angle... whatever you can accomplish in an action that will get you safely out of Heat Wave range. Launching two (STAB, take that, L'arc!) Aura Spheres up out of the hole should be no problem after that.

- No Don?

After a few moments of consideration, the trainers select their next pokémon, and the crowd cheers as Philharmonic the chatot and Sancho Panza the lucario appear on the field. The chatot sweeps beady eyes over the spectators, muttering to himself while his baton-tail twitches up and down in a jerky rhythm. Sancho Panza is having a look around, too, though for a different reason--he wants to be sure that he hasn't been called out to aid Don Quixote in another one of the arcanine's scatterbrained escapades.

Both pokémon come to attention, then take off in opposite directions at their trainers' behest. Philharmonic spreads his wings and leaps into the air, while Sancho Panza gets down on all fours and starts tearing at the earth. While the chatot circles ever-higher, the lucario disappears into a narrow tunnel, an impressive pile of loose dirt piling up at the edge of his hole. Finally Philharmonic stops climbing and starts to fly around in circles, maintaining altitude and scanning the ground below with sharp eyes.

There's no sign of Sancho, just a rough hole in the earth and displaced dirt scattered at its lip. There's no way Philharmonic's heat wave is going to be able to reach the lucario while he's underground, and the chatot's way up high, so Philharmonic instead starts to speed up, his wings hammering as he zooms into aerial acrobatics at incredible speed. His form blurs and stretches out into one long streak of color, then shatters into a full ten pieces, leaving Philharmonic just one of many chatot flying in erratic patterns over the arena.

Sancho Panza finishes his curving tunnel to the best of his satisfaction, then digs out a space large for him to turn around in at the end. The angle of his tunnel is such that he can only see a sliver of sky overhead and Philharmonic not at all, save for the occasional flicker of shadow in his narrow field of view. Nevertheless, the lucario is undaunted as he crouches in the dark. Blue light illuminates the dim tunnel as Sancho calls on his aura energy, fashioning a swirling ball of pure power that will seek out living creatures no matter how far away.

The aura sphere rockets out of Sancho's paws, curves away up the tunnel, then shoots off into the sky as soon as it reaches the open air. Ignoring Philharmonic's clones entirely, it homes in on the real bird. Thinking himself safe high in the air and surrounded by clones, the chatot isn't at his most alert and doesn't even notice the aura sphere until it's nearly upon him. The attack, which is nearly as big as Philharmonic himself, engulfs the bird in a storm of pure energy. The aura sphere fries feathers and hurls the chatot into a wild spin with its explosive discharge; his clones vanish immediately, and although Philharmonic manages to get his flight back under control, it is an obvious effort.

Badly shaken, Philharmonic circles aimlessly for a few minutes as he tries to get his flight back under control again. One aura sphere, and he's already feeling achy and unstable--and even another double team isn't going to protect him. Nevertheless, a heat wave's not going to do him much good, either, and if he's lucky, maybe Sancho Panza won't throw another one at him in the near future.

Forcing ragged wings and aching muscles to cooperate, Philharmonic starts up another top-speed double team and surrounds himself with another complement of clones--although his slower flight as a result of injuries means he can only manage seven this time. Unfortunately, Sancho Panza, too, is preparing a repeat of his last attack. Philharmonic is a little more ready for this aura sphere, and it's for some reason smaller than the last, but the attack nevertheless wipes out his clones and damages his wings even more. Already, the chatot's flight is looking decidedly labored; it's unsure how much longer he'll be able to remain aloft.

That's the way it's done, Sancho. Now set up a 10% Substitute--you stay in the back of your hole and let the substitute sit closer to the front. If it has to stick out a little then so be it, but hopefully you've got enough room. Then if you can, sort of reach around it and fire off two more Aura Spheres; if you think that the sub will be in the way of Aura Sphere, though, or if there's any way you're pretty sure that Philharmonic is using Protect (which I highly doubt you'll notice, but hey), then Calm Mind and Bulk Up. If Mr. Polly-wanna-cracker up there wants to do anything other than protect himself or try Double Team again he's going to have to get closer to your level; if that happens and you think it'll reach him, Stone Edge.

Well, let's see what we can do here... Set up your own 10% Substitute, that should be useful. Then, when he uses Aura Sphere, I want you to Mimic it! Finish the round by trying out your new attack again. But if he doesn't use it, then use Nasty Plot and move Mimic to the next action.

Philharmonic gives his wings a little flick, scattering a cloud of iridescent feathers into the air around him. The wondrous feathers are formed of Philharmonic's lifeforce itself and spontaneously arrange themselves into the shape of a slightly smaller, translucent chatot that flashes rainbow colors as it flies along just below its creator.

As it turns out, Sancho is working to construct his own substitute while Philharmonic calls his into being high above. Delving into the natural threads of energy that run all through the fabric of matter, Sancho impresses his aura signature onto them, warping reality so that a small pocket of his life energy flows into a space outside his body and takes on his form. The lucario is joined in his tunnel by a flickering blue doppelganger, an extension of his lifeforce with a strong instinct for self-preservation.

Philharmonic circles over the arena, thinking hard. Having experienced two aura spheres firsthand, the chatot has some idea of what the attack's about. That he wasn't able to see Sancho preparing the attacks is somewhat of a disadvantage, but Philharmonic has the concept of it down well enough. A couple wobbly blue blobs of energy fizzle out between the chatot's claws before he is able to create an aura sphere stable enough to fire, but once he does, he can watch it plummet towards Sancho's hole with considerable personal pride.

In Sancho's tunnel, the lucario's substitute rises as much as it can in the cramped space, stretching out its arms and filling as much of the tunnel as possible. Philharmonic's aura sphere whips around the bend in the tunnel and slams into the substitute's midriff. Though it might look ethereal, the avatar is substantial enough to block the attack--the opposed energies cancel one another out, and Sancho Panza's substitute vanishes in a small detonation as the overflow energy of the aura sphere dissipates into the air.

The lucario doesn't spend any time mourning his substitute's brief existence, instead drawing up an aura sphere of his own to strike back at Philharmonic. The orb of power shoots up and Philharmonic's substitute dives, feathers flashing as it rockets down to meet the attack head-on. Fake bird and ball vanish with a loud concussion and a blaze of warring energy, and Philharmonic finds himself alone once more.

Another aura sphere gathers between Philharmonic's claws, smaller than the ones that Sancho can craft but deadly when turned against the lucario's metal-reinforced body. Again Philharmonic drops the completed attack and it zooms away towards his opponent. This time, there is nothing to protect Sancho from the attack and he takes his first blow of the match--the aura sphere blasts into his face and slams his head up against the roof of the tunnel.

Snorting and shaking dirt out of his face, Sancho blinks and paws at his eyse a bit until they clear, then draws up another aura sphere and launches it Philharmonic's way. The bird's heart sinks as he sees the sphere streaking up towards him, but there's nothing he can do about it. The attack hits home, scattering more of his feathers and leaving Philharmonic's flight very shaky indeed.

Oh bother this is not going well at all :c

Okay Phil. We can do this! I want you to get closer to the ground now, and use your Signature Move, Tone-Deaf~ If he protects to avoid it, then just wait until next action to use it, and use Nasty Plot instead. Afterward, use Aura Sphere.
