Terrain: Nimbasa City Music Hall

As the TCoD League championship moves on from Castelia City, the next stop is Unova's recreation hotspot, Nimbasa City. There are all kinds of attractions to choose from: the ferris wheel, the sports domes, and even the battle subway, perhaps a natural choice for a pokémon tournament. But let's be serious--these all pale into comparison to the real reason you'd want to visit Nimbasa City. After all, you haven't really lived until you've stuck a moustache on your Arceus and then chuckled to yourself as you watched the creator of the pokémon world prancing and rolling across the stage next to a patrat wearing cowboy boots.

Yes, the league is taking to the stage and setting its next round of battle to music. The battle takes place on one of the four Music Hall stages (Stardom, Forest Stroll, A Sweet Soiree, or Exciting Nimbasa), selected at random. The different backdrops have no effect on the battle. In addition, trainers may dress their pokémon up in any way that they wish, although costumes will also have no effect on the battle (even if they include things like weapons or props that would ordinarily be useful in a fight). However, they can also choose the music that will play during each round, and different tunes will have different effects on the pokémon battling.

Battles for this round will begin with the posting of each player's active squad as usual. After that, however, each player PM's their choice of pokémon, a description of that pokémon's costume, and their selection of songs and their effects to the referee. Each player chooses five songs and comes up with effects for them (appropriate effects are described below); these will be played in order, one during each round of battle, and the player who is ordering first in that round is always the one who will have his or her song playing during that round. Once the pokémon and songs have been received from both players, the referee will randomize which player gives commands first, then posts what pokémon each player will be using and the song (and the effects it will have on the battle) that will play for the first round--the first song on the list for the player who orders first in the first round. From that point forward, commands proceed as normal, with the referee posting the next song and its effects at the end of each round. If neither pokémon has been knocked out at the end of ten rounds, the winner will be determined by totaling each pokémon's health and energy, the same way it was during the previous round.

Any sort of music can be specified as the song for a given round, but please don't pick something offensive. Don't make me regret not restricting you to songs without lyrics, that is. A song can have a variety of effects on the battlefield, whether raising the power of some kinds of attacks for that round to healing status ailments. However, they must affect both pokémon equally--you can't have only your pokémon get an attack boost, for example. However, it's fine if you specify an effect that, due to the nature of your pokémon, will not affect the opponent the same as your pokémon; for example, if you specify that both pokémon will become severely poisoned but send out a steel-type, then your pokémon will not be poisoned even though your opponent's might. Effects that would ordinarily last multiple rounds (like trick room, weather attacks, or status conditions), if caused by a song, will last only for that round, and you can ask for weather effects even though pokémon won't be able to create them with their attacks. Effects always come into play at the beginning of the round, before either pokémon has the opportunity to act; thus, if a song will cause both pokémon to be burned, they will start out the round burned, and the burn can't be prevented by any of their attacks (i.e. you can't block a first-action burn with a safeguard).

Songs are restricted to causing damage/energy swings of no more than 3% (e.g. "All fire attacks cause 3% more damage after all effects" or "All fire attacks cost 3% less energy after all effects) and causing stat boosts/reductions of no more than two levels. They may also have only one effect: they cause hail to come into play or they increase fire-type attack damage by 3% or they cause both pokémon to fall asleep or they cause both pokémon to become paralyzed, etc., not any combination thereof. They also may not prevent the pokémon from acting in a round, e.g. "neither pokémon can use damaging attacks this round" or "neither pokémon can act this round", ban one or more attacks for the round, or alter the pokémon's movepools.

If you don't want to go to the trouble to figure out a set of songs for yourself and/or don't want your pokémon to fight in costume, then just let your referee know when you choose which pokémon to send out. They will come up with a list of randomly-selected pokémon-related songs with associated effects and then PM them back to you, so that you retain the advantage of knowing what will happen on each one of "your" song rounds. (Or, if the referee doesn't want to do that either, they can PM me and I'll provide the music for that player instead.)

The pokémon are in, so let's get started. Big Red Cherry Bomb will use L'arc-en-Ciel the togekiss (sig attribute, sig move) wearing a spectacular multicolored scarf and a variety of colorful bangles in his crest. Whirlpool will use Jet the murkrow, appearing here as a magician, with a top hat shoved over his crest, a cloak, bow tie, and white domino mask.

Big Red Cherry Bomb attacks first, and the opening song will be "READY STEADY GO!" by L'Arc~en~Ciel. All pokémon will get +2 speed.

--wait how are you faster than meeee

oh well, let's fix that. Start with Thunder Wave, though if he Protects/Detects, Work Up, and if he Taunts you/Subs, Aura Sphere. If he's paralyzed, hit with Air Slash, and if not, alternate Ancientpower and Aura Sphere

Let's Icy Wind for some nice ~super effective~ damage, then Psycho Shift that paralysis away. If you're still paralyzed, Sucker Punch to try to avoid flinching; if you're not, wait for the Aura Sphere to hit, then use Assurance.

This night's entertainment at the Pokémon Musical is a bit different than what the citizens of Nimbasa are used to. It has most of the elements they know and love--pokémon in silly outfits and, of course, music--but with a more brutal edge than usual. More than a few of the Musical's usual patrons have decided they can't really stomach this barbarous turn to their favorite form of pokémon entertainment, but those who are following the TCoD League's championship series are eating it up. They squabble for the best seats, munching their way through their jumbo popcorns and chatting excitedly in anticipation of the bloodsport to come.

And that's exactly what they'll get. Quiet falls over the crowd as the curtain goes up, revealing a cheesy painted-on forest backdrop and the pokémon who will be battling in front of it. On one side of the stage, L'Arc-En-Ciel preens for an adoring public, a spectacularly long technicolor scarf around his neck and multicolored bangles accenting the irridescent sheen of his scaly feathers. Opposite him, Jet hams it up for the crowd, cackling and spreading his wings to show off his magician's attire. His eyes are bright and excited behind his white mask; the driving metal beat of the music has his blood pumping, and L'Arc is looking extra-energetic as well. The pair don't hesitate to dive into battle as the first orders are given, to loud cheering from the crowd.

Round One

Big Red Cherry Bomb (O)

Jet (M) <Super Luck>
Health: 100%
Energy: 100%
Commands: Thunder Wave/Work Up/Aura Sphere ~ Air Slash/Ancientpower ~ Air Slash/Aura Sphere
- Ready to make his opponent disappear.

Jet is quick to get the drop on his opponent, conjuring an icy gust of wind from nowhere and sending it sweeping across the stage at his opponent. L'Arc is glad of his thick scarf; small crystals of frost form on his feathers, and his half-dragon heritage makes the attack all the more stinging. He's feeling a bit sluggish as he charges up some electricity, though nowhere near as sluggish as Jet will once this thunder wave hits him.

Indeed, when the little bolt of lightning snaps across the stage to him, Jet is left shivering uncontrollably, unable to retaliate as L'Arc brings one wing slashing down, sending a thin blade of air shooting across the arena and slicing into him. The air slash digs deep, and Jet gasps in pain, cringing away from his opponent and unable to summon up the presence of mind to try any psycho shifting.

He can't indulge his discomfort for long, though. Jet has to get a jump on his opponent, and he knows his window of opportunity will be brief. As L'Arc raises a wing once more, the murkrow sees his chance. He rockets across the arena in a blur of dark energy and lands L'Arc a solid thwack below the chin. The togekiss, briefly off-balance as he prepares his attack, is knocked on his side in a clash of bangles.

Jet's sucker punch can't stop the air slash completely, though. L'Arc is miffed, but not too thrown by the attack. He's clambering to his feet in a moment and shooting another burst of razor-sharp wind after his limping opponent, catching Jet another stinging blow.

The frenetic JPOP comes to an end, to be replaced with a more low-key pop song. L'Arc finds it quite infectious; he can't help but dance. But all his exuberant loop-the-looping and aerial trickery is more than just fun. It's a maneuver that no ordinary togekiss knows, but L'Arc's dragon heritage has imparted on him many of the ancient creatures' techniques. As the togekiss' dragon dance goes on, he is filled with the strength and grace of the noble race.

Jet watches L'Arc's dance with ill humor. The togekiss' resolutely nonviolent technique isn't giving him any opportunity to get a sucker punch in, and his paralysis makes even sitting around sulking uncomfortable. Now and again his muscles seize up unexpectedly, giving him a painful cramp. Jet honestly doesn't know whether he'd be able to pull off a sucker punch even if he had the chance.

The crowd, of course, is eating up L'Arc's ever more energetic performance, and a bitter Jet stiffly turns his face away, resolutely ignoring his opponent. As a result he misses the grand finale; L'Arc pulls out of a steep dive, his wings spread wide and, just for a moment, all iridescent feathers catching the light at the same time.

Jet looks up and blinks as the flash blooms in his peripheral vision, but almost all of the attack is lost on him. The murkrow can see perfectly fine--see that he still has no opportunity to pull off a sucker punch. The round ends on a sour note for the murkrow, but L'Arc is feeling better than ever, his chilled muscles warmed up again and his limbs full of new strength.

Once more the music changes, swinging back towards the swift and upbeat. L'Arc, still riding the rush of his dragon dances, is quick to take charge with another air slash. The thin wave of energy slices across Jet's chest, and to the murkrow's dismay, it has even more bite than its previous incarnations. For some reason, the attack feels icy-cold, and the murkrow shudders at the queer sensation.

Fortunately, though, he isn't distracted enough to forget his own attack. Fanning his wings gently, he releases a cloud of hazy darkness, which roils and swirls and expands until it envelops the whole arena. The chill grayness certainly doesn't comfort Jet, but it doesn't hurt him either; L'Arc is a different story. The clammy fog weighs heavily on him, leeching the happiness and confidence right out of his body and replacing it with a dull sluggishness.

The togekiss flies higher, trying to escape the haze, but it has filled up the entire stage. And, he realizes after a moment, he's now completely lost track of where his opponent is. The togekiss swoops low again, as low as he dares, for he crash if he isn't careful, and skims across the stage, hunting for his opponent. At last he sees a shape looming through the fog and, pulling up for a moment, sends an air slash flying with a clap of his wings. The haze parts momentarily in the wake of the attack, so L'Arc is able to see how the attack slices into the innocent edge of the curtain rather than his actual opponent. A moment later, the haze has rolled back in, leaving him in a blank gray fog again.

The failed attack has given Jet an idea of where his opponent is, however, and the Murkrow turns towards the clap of air, electricity fizzing and sparking in his feathers. He shakily extends a wing, pointing it blindly into the haze, and lets fly. His aim proves true, and L'Arc gasps when the thin tendril of electricity leaps out of featureless haze and takes hold of his body. It is all he can do to stay airborne through the initial wave of shivers and shakes; fortunately, he retains enough of his mobility that he can not only stay aloft, but is able to turn in the direction from which the attack came and fire off another air slash.

This one is more successful than the last, striking Jet full-on. The murkrow is vaguely confused, for this blast of air is searing-hot, but mostly distracted by the fact that his muscles have locked up entirely, leaving him uncomfortably cramped and unable to do more than nurse dark thoughts of revenge.

Final Notes
- Eurrgh, I forgot to mention the song's effect again at the end of the previous round. Don't hesitate to point that out if you notice it. Anyway, it caused attacks to have their typings changed to a random elemental affinity for the duration; L'Arc's first air slash was ice-typed, and the last was fire-typed.
- The second air slash missed.
- Whirlpool attacks first next round. The song will be "Back to Hogwarts" from A Very Potter Musical. Both Pokémon will gain +2 attack because of excitement.

Let's Spite that Air Slash, then Drill Peck twice for a lack of anything better to do. If they Protect, Roost, then Chill with the remaining actions.

As the music changes once more, the pokémon are temporarily drawn from thoughts of battle as they listen to the new tune. Though they don't really understand what the singers are going on about, they can't help but catch their excited fever, one that even prods the downtrodden Jet into feeling a bit more confident and ready to deal some serious damage. Not just yet, though; first, he's going to discourage L'Arc from using any more of thos funny air slashes. The murkrow closes his eyes in concentration, murmuring a dark spell to himself that twines itself around L'Arc, binding him in an invisible web of energy that will make it much more difficult for him to call up another air slash.

The togekiss isn't planning to do so in the near future anyway, though, and he hardly notices Jet's spite. What he really wants is to get rid of his confusion, and to do so, he's going to try a tactic that the murkrow had earlier failed to pull off. He lands heavily, struggling against his reluctant muscles, and forms a tentative psychic link with his opponent. It is difficult to hold the murkrow's slippery dark-edged consciousness with his mind, but hold it he does, imposing his own feelings on the murkrow, transferring the torment of his paralyzed muscles to his opponent. Of course, Jet is already paralyzed, but he'd been starting to recover, and L'Arc's psycho shift leaves him as stiff and unhappy as when he was first struck by thunder wave. The togekiss, on the other hand, is cured of his own ailment and restored to his usual cheerful self.

By now the haze has dissipated enough that Jet can make out his opponent with little difficulty. And, somewhat miraculously, he's able to muster his muscles enough to lift off from the ground and fly straight at L'Arc, spinning as he goes, to bore viciously into the togekiss' chest. L'Arc is prepared, however, and manages to twist aside, dealing Jet a thwack with his wing that sends the murkrow into a tumbling slide along the stage. L'Arc doesn't emerge unscathed--Jet's beak still cuts a long gash down his side--but it is definitely Jet who gets the worst of the exchange.

Jet totters to his feet, dazed and disoriented, but nevertheless points his beak back in L'Arc's direction and takes to the air once more. He flies low and fast, spiraling up into another drill peck. This time, though, sheer luck has his attack dig into the joint where L'Arc's left wing meets his shoulder, and the togekiss is forced to grit his teeth against the intense pain. He still manages to hurl his opponent away, once more dealing him grievous damage as he turns the murkrow's momentum against him, but the second drill peck leaves him badly injured. He might look much better than his opponent, but he's starting to tire himself; best to get this battle over with quickly, then.

A new song starts up, one so unadulteratedly happy that the pokémon can't help but feel encouraged. L'Arc has a sunny personality by nature, but even Jet, a bit moody and less than pleased with how the battle is going so far, feels an uncharacteristic surge of optimism. He's going to turn things around at last.

First, though, L'Arc is going to get an attack in. The togekiss takes to the air again and, with an unnecessary acrobatic flourish, swoops down on his opponent. Perhaps he's paying a little too much attention to the music, though; he overshoots Jet completely, passing right over the cowering murkrow's head. Jet lets out a sigh of relief; well, things are definitely looking up. He tucks his head under a wing and slips into a deep trance. His body's natural repair abilities are heightened to extreme levels, and as energy sweeps through the murkrow's body, his injuries are swiftly erased.

L'Arc is a little disappointed that his opponent chose this moment to zonk out; he's going to miss the togekiss' signature attack! At least the audience will get a nice treat. The togekiss rises towards the ceiling, the air around him shimmering and rippling as energy builds in his body. A moment later, he releases a broad beam of rainbow-sparkling energy that irradiates his opponents and draws considerable applause from the audience. Jet, asleep and doing his best to conserve energy during his taxing rest, does no more than shiver a little as the wave of energy passes over him.

L'Arc dives again, and this time he manages to aim properly, scooping his opponent up with one wing and juggling him painfully in midair. When L'Arc lets Jet fall, the murkrow mumbles something groggy upon hitting the stage. As the togekiss sweeps up and away, the murkrow groggily opens his eyes. He's not quite in top form, but he's certainly better off than he was--most notably, his paralysis has finally vanished. Jet stretches his wings and bobs his head to the last few seconds of the music, hoping that the end of the battle goes better for him than the beginning did.
