Terrain: Castelia City Square

Castelia City is the gateway to Unova, its port welcoming trainers from around the world. Today those trainers include a fair number from Asber, turned out to compete or spectate on the first round of the League Championship. The city square at the center of Castelia has been reserved for the first round of battle, its broad cobbled expanse providing plenty of room to fight and the central fountain offering a refuge for pokémon that would rather swim than stand. Skyscrapers rise on all sides, framing the scene with the imposing prosperity of Castelia City.

More than just Asber's own trainers have turned out for the battles, though; plenty of curious Castelia residents and tourists mill about the rim of the arena, hoping to catch a few exciting battles. To ensure that they don't go unsatisfied, the regional authorities have generously--and forcefully--provided some of Unova's most powerful pokémon for the trainers to test-drive and show off for the crowd. Unfortunately, with the number of battles that need to be run through before the TCoD League's lease on the square expires, some of the fights might have to be truncated a bit.

For this battle, you will be using a pokémon on loan from the Unova League. Your choices are below. The first player will get first pick of pokémon, and the second will make their pick and then attack as usual. This match will be capped at five rounds. If both pokémon are still standing at the end of round five, the pokémon's health and energy will be added together and the one with the most will be declared the winner.

The pokémon:

Bouffalant (M) <Sap Sipper>
Red-Striped Basculin (F) <Adaptability>
Escavalier (F) <Shell Armor>
Darmanitan (M) <Zen Mode>

Darmanitan, looks like you are my partner in this battle. I know if we work together, we'll pull off quite the show.

Now, seems they want to make it rain. We can't let that happen or all these nice people will have their day ruined. No...I think we need to make it sunnier! Let the fish flop around to make its rain come, then shoot a torrent of flames to clear the clouds and draw out the heat of the sunny. After you do this, I want you to use the sun's power for your second attack on the fishy. Let loose a Solarbeam to show the water dweller that they shouldn't count their victories before the battle is over. Finally I want you to toss up a shield to protect you from Attract. We really don't need you falling for the fishes wiles.

Sunny Day ~ Solarbeam ~ Protect

Scattered applause greets the trainers as they step up to the makeshift arena, turning their borrowed pokéballs over in their hands but not looking the slightest bit nervous. There is further excitement as the start of the match is announced and the trainers toss their pokéballs to the pavement, revealing their choices. DarkAura's pokémon splashes down in the fountain, a ragged dorsal fin circling in the shallow water as the red-striped basculin explores her surroundings. moon-panther's choice, a darmanitan, peers cautiously into the water, then bounds away from the fountain as the referee calls for the battle to begin.

- A little nervous to be fighting a water-type.

The battle starts with an impressive display of aquatic ballet on Basculin's part. The fish swims in swift circles around the fountain, now and again leaping out of the water, hopping along on her tail, or clapping her fins as she invokes her power over weather to call down a downpour.

Darmanitan watches with increasing unease as storm clouds roll in to cover the sky. No sooner have a few scattered drop started falling, though, than the fire-type raises his hands above his head and brings them together in a powerful clap. The noise resounds around the arena, magnified to unusual volume by some trick of its acoustics. Apparently it reverberates even high above, for as if on cue the storm clouds shrivel away to nothing and the sun reappears, searing and angry in the sky overhead.

Basculin sticks her head up out of the water and looks from Darmanitan to the stubbornly clear sky overhead, grinding her wicked teeth. Well, isn't that just typical? She's not going to let Darmanitan get away with that. Basculin reaches out to the water around her, drawing it up into a menacing wave that she sends crashing down over Darmanitan. The square is quite well-kept--nothing much around to use for mud--so the muddy water is rather more clean than it might otherwise be, but it makes Darmanitan miserable all the same.

Darmanitan, soaked and annoyed, raises his hands in front of him, touching thumbs to index fingers to form a rectangle through which he sights Basculin. The darmanitan's thick fur ripples as solar energy rolls through it, traveling forward along his body to congregate in the space between his fingers. An orb of blazing green energy forms and Basculin sinks down below the lip of the fountain, hoping to gain some cover against the imminent attack.

It's no good, though; once unleashed, the solar beam burns straight through the wall of the fountain, searing into Basculin unencumbered. Water explodes into steam as the solarbeam boils it instantly, and Basculin is left floating for a few seconds, dazed, in the attack's aftermath. She has to pull herself together, though, and try for her next attack.

Basculin isn't at her most attractive with her scales starting to peel from the heat and her attitude a bit distracted, as she's still shell-shocked from the power of Darmanitan's solarbeam. She nevertheless does her best to attract his attention, leaning on the ruined edge of the fountain and making suggestive comments, subtly turning her head from side to side, letting the light glimmer off her scales and draw attention to her fetching red stripe.

Darmanitan just sits watching her, arms crossed and expression neutral. He is protected by a bubble of invisible energy, one that screens out the power of Basculin's attract attack and enables him to remain stoic and unaffected.

Alright Darma, lets keep going strong!

Use Solarbeam, dear. If she tries use Rain Dance, use Sunny Day. And if she tries to attract you again, use protect. Now, if she protects use Focus Energy. Simple enough?

Basculin doesn't think she can take another moment of sun. Hail might not be the most pleasant weather in the world, but at least she won't feel like she's being cooked alive while it's going on. Tipping her head back, the water type shoots a pulse of icy energy into the heavens above, seeding a new growth of clouds that, within seconds, have begun spitting hailstones onto the battlefield.

Darmanitan notices, distantly, that the arena grows darker and colder. He's a bit preoccupied, though, with trying to puzzle out his commands--there sure are a lot of them. Once he sits down and thinks, it's not too hard to work them out (it's a good thing they're the same for all actions), but soon enough a hailstone interrupts his reverie, bouncing painfully off his nose. Darmanitan rubs the sore spot and looks balefully up at the clouds. All right, he's got it now; it's time to get this round started.

His enthusiasm is more than a little dampened, though, as Basculin blasts him with a concentrated stream of water. It's actually not that bad--not nearly so painful as Darmanitan would have expected--but it contains an odd energy, one that sinks through his skin and spreads throughout his body, turning him cold and clammy and, most terrifying of all, snuffing out his inner fire. Suddenly the flames that he normally wields with such skill seem remote and, oddly enough, Basculin's spot in the fountain looks a lot more attractive.

Darmanitan doesn't have the time to thoroughly explore what exactly Basculin's last attack has done to him, though. He's wasted too much time already. Once again Darmanitan frames Basculin with his fingers, creating a focal point for the energy of another solarbeam attack. It's a struggle to harness the sun's power, though, what with its being hidden by the clouds. Even when Darmanitan does manage to pull in enough charge to form a proper solarbeam, it's weak and sickly compared to the one he launched last round. Basculin doesn't appreciate the difference, though--albeit weakened, the solarbeam manages to catch her full in the stomach, easily breaching her more delicate scales. The lucky strike more than makes up for the loss of power with the fleeing of the sun, and Basculin cries out in pain.

As the water of the fountain steams all around her, it's all Basculin can do to cool her internal reserves and prepare a frigid response to Darmanitan's solar beam. Although the jet of water she fires at Darmanitan looks identical to the last, this one freezes instantly upon striking Darmanitan's shoulder. Darmanitan shrugs it easily, though, as protected from the ice by his new water typing as he would have been by his old fiery nature. And, much to Basculin's dismay, he raises his hands again, calling up a swirling globe of brilliant green energy; another solarbeam is on its way. The attack strikes true, and after it fades, the fountain is looking considerably the worse for wear: more of its water has evaporated, and the rim between Darmanitan and Basculin has been almost completely destroyed. Basculin herself isn't looking so great, either, starting to shed her scales as a result of the repeated cookings.

That fish turned you into a water type...ok, that is a little funny I guess, but you should be a little ticked at all that, Darma my boy. That little fish is making fun of you, taunting you by messing with your very being, then further the insult with a weak Ice Beam. I think its time to bring on the pain, and I mean bring it.

Since it wants to use status on you, lets just get this over with and turn that fish into a patty ready for McDonalds. Hammer Arm the fins off of her!

Mercifully, Basculin's been given the command to construct herself a substitute to protect against Darmanitan's solarbeams and whatever other attacks he might have in store. She gathers water around her into the rough shape of another basculin, her shed scales glittering in a patchy covering over its body. A sacrifice of life energy binds the substitute's form and gives it a weak semblance of life--life enough to throw itself blindly at Darmanitan as he knuckle-walks over to the edge of the fountain and peers in.

The watery darmanitan jerks back as the basculin construct comes shooting out of the water at his face, swinging blindly with a fist and succeeding in crushing the substitute to the pavement. Darmanitan raises his arm again and peers with interest at the small crater left in the cobblestones by his hammer arm. There is a forlorn little puddle of water in its center which, as he watches, ripples uncertainly, then slowly reforms into a rather smaller basculin. The smacking of hailstones is almost enough to do the little fish in, but it hangs onto its existence with fierce energy, every fiber of its being devoted to doing its duty and protecting Baculin.

Darmanitan's fascination with this event is cut short as the real basculin hurls herself out of the water and latches onto his arm with black-dripping teeth. Darmanitan yells in surprise and pain, flailing his arm wildly in an attempt to dislodge his opponent. When this does no good, he tries aiming a hammer arm at the fish instead. The substitute, ever aware of its duty, interposes itself, and once again Darmanitan crushes the fake fish to the ground instead of his real target.

This gives Basculin the opportunity to let go and propel herself back into the fountain in one great leap. After splashing down in the water, she circles, watching Darmanitan carefully. Her opponent is peering at the splatter left behind by her substitute with suspicion, wondering if it's going to rise up and defy him again. It's much too far gone for that, though, and his inattention once again leaves him open for attack.

Basculin shoots a concentrated blast of superheated water at her opponent, an attack that would certainly have caused Darmanitan a lot of pain back when she was a fire type. Now that she's been transmuted to something more watery, though, she yelps as the searing attack strikes her, but is little injured by it. The attack doesn't even succeed in leaving any severe burns, and Darmanitan is unhindered as she saunters to the edge of the fountain and reaches over its rim, bringing her fist crashing down on the real Basculin with a decisive hammer arm.

Darmanitan had hoped his hammer arm would flatten Basculin, and indeed it did--for a moment. He recoils with a grunt when, suddenly, the water in front of him splashes and froths, Basculin propelling herself out of it in a wild, wiggling leap. Darmanitan is smacked around the face by the fish's flailing tail, knocked back onto his rump while he grabs blindly for his opponent.

Basculin lands back in the fountain with a splash, and Darmanitan wipes his face dry, then peers bad-temperedly into the fountain. It isn't hard to locate Basculin, and the fish isn't moving at her fastest, so in no time at all Darmanitan's managed to slam his fist down on her again, delivering another crushing hammer arm to his opponent.

Basculin wriggles out from underneath her opponent's fist, bruised and as dispirited as can be. At this point, there's little hope left for her. Fortunately, despair lends a special flair to her flail attack, and even if she can't bring Darmanitan down, she can give the hulking brute something to remember her by.

She hurls herself out of the water, waggling as wildly as she can and dealing Darmanitan a flurry of vicious tail-slaps and fin-thwacks before dropping, exhausted, back into the water.

Once again Darmanitan recoils from the powerful flail attack, but this time, what follows is entirely new. The water type's eyebrows, which had been spitting a gentle spray of water instead of flame, go out. His shaggy hide turns tough and stony, and he seems to shrink in on himself, curling arms and legs up into the rough shape of an egg. In a matter of moments, there is a new creature sitting where Darmanitan had been, one that looks like nothing more than an odd statue, lifeless and ancient.

Though transformed, Darmanitan isn't out of the game. The statue makes an awkward hop sideways, leaning up against the rim of the fountain, and one of the arms curled up by its face straightens out, stretching over the water, then falls with a decisive splash. The hammer arm Darmanitan deals to Basculin is weaker than it was in his previous form, but it's still more than enough to crush the remaining fight out of the fish.

The pokémon are recalled as the crowd cheers, and moon-panther and Rizadon exchange their end-of-battle handshakes as the referee prepares the prizes.

moon-panther wins $10, Rizadon gets $5, and I get $15. Good luck in the next round, moon-panther, and good game to the both of you.

Wait, isnt Basculin faster than Darmanitan? (zen mode's speed is 55 i believe)

Doesnt matter, i had fun. And i gained....five dollars...meh, i could but a Pokemon with it.

Awesome job Moon-Panther!

Basculin was faster than Darmanitan, yes... which is why she got to attack twice before being knocked out.
