Ranger HQ Ranger Union HQ

The Ranger Union was founded long ago, to serve the common law across the whole of the Soja'. Not for any one polity or faction, but through cooperation between every community, with peacekeepers from the most remote village, to warriors and wardens from regional clans, to mountain monks and even wanderers from still more distant tribes. It was as much a symbol of cooperation as it was an actual emergency services institution – strange and wondrous, that disparate pokémon could work together.

Small wonder that the place they headquartered their operations was itself a strange and wondrous union.

Long before reaching the Soja Ranger HQ, one could spot its central signifier standing tall over the arid middle-Soja' desert shrubland. This was the same region as Little Scriven – marked by ruddy sandstone buttes and sparse sagebrush. Sometimes, natural arches and other fanciful rock formations would rise out of the earth, looking like something carved by intelligent paws. In this case, an improbably balanced spire of sandstone jutted up from a shimmering heat mirage that blanketed a broad area of dry grassland. Atop it sat a skinny windmill of wood and canvas, and a crow's nest tower sporting the Union colours of gold, red and white; a welcoming beacon for Rangers returning from a mission, and a landmark for any seeking their aid.

As one drew closer to the prominent milestone of the lookout tower, the rest of the headquarters would melt into view. Adobe mudbrick structures nestled up against the foot of the spire, stacked densely, one on top of the other. Roofs became porches became walls became terraces became foundations, on and on, spiraling down into the canyon carved beneath the sandstone spire's overhang. Among the reddish stone and clay, splashes of greenery could be found on those rooftops that didn’t rest in the permanent shade of the canyon walls. It seemed the Rangers kept their own gardens of dungeon berries, including some more exotic cultivars.

A lattice of ladders and rough hewn logs served as the means of access to the labyrinth of pueblos the Rangers called home. It was a wonder anyone here knew how to get around without getting lost; each building looked much like another, yet every ‘mon crossed the Headquarters with a purpose, never seeming confused or lost. Was that Ranger navigational skill at work, or something else a newcomer could only guess at?

If one were to look long enough, the shimmer of a heat mirage would occasionally appear to shroud a given cluster of pueblos, regardless of how shaded they were from the daytime heat. And if one were to look closely – and not blink – they might see the pattern of doors and windows in such an area shift. As if the structure had, unaccountably, rearranged itself...

Regardless of the shifting architecture, one space in the Headquarters could be relied on to orient oneself by. The central plaza, standing open at the base of the canyon, served as a place for friends to gather, meetings to be held, or visitors to be welcomed. Awnings over the adjoining buildings sheltered low benches and loose belongings, and a commissary and small community library that appeared to operate on the honour system. It provided shade almost all hours of the day from the spire above, a welcome respite from the sun's glare. But despite its cooler temperature, the atmosphere there was always warm.

[Ch04] ~ Unity and Disparity
"There's home," called Nico, softly.

It had been a long trip. The ranger's voice was tired, even for one used to this sort of regular long patrol. He'd spent the whole time watching over the party of Wayfarers, of course – and they'd pressed hard to arrive without having to camp overnight.

"Not sure who'll greet us when we get there, but most rangers are pretty hard to offend," he chuckled. "Comes with the job. You meet all sorts, often in tough situations when they aren't their best selves. So don't worry too much about being presentable."

By the time they reached the Ranger HQ, Kimiko was exhausted. Maybe she was still used to having long legs, but this trip felt like it took quite a long time. Even Nico sounded a bit relieved that the trip was over, and surely extended travel wasn't out of the norm for him. She could only imagine what it would have felt like if something more problematic than the ghostly tumbleweed swarm had held them up.

The innards of the HQ weren't necessarily a welcome sight, however; not with all of those ladders and crossing paths and... was that door always there? Kimiko didn't feel like the desert heat had gotten to her, attributing that to her grass-typing, but maybe she'd only been spared the physical effects...

At least, according to Nico, there wasn't any need to worry over formalities. She wasn't sure she could even pretend to be 'presentable' right now, regardless of how one defined it.

"Thanks for being our map," she said to their guide. "I hope there-" she cut herself off. She'd almost said 'I hope there's food,' but decided that would be rude, and it really was on her for packing so light. Instead, she continued, "I mean, I hope we won't be in the way."

Leaf had been expecting something more like... something not quite so... Okay, fine, you got her. She hadn't known what to expect at all. 'A whole entire little town' hadn't been anywhere near the top of the list, was the point. You could build towns inside of dungeons, too?

It was hard to know what to focus on first in a place as wild as this one—well, there was the big plaza in the middle, but obviously that was where Nico was taking them, right, they'd get there when they got there—so she settled for 'everything'. "How many Rangers live here, Nico?" she asked, head practically on a swivel as she watched pokémon and also sometimes doors weave through all the confusing buildings. (Probably save the question about the doors for later.)

"Sick," Koa breathed, his jaws parted in awe. His tiredness and achy paws vanished, replaced by excitement. There was nothing like this in Sinnoh. A town, always changing, and inside a mystery dungeon... His eyes shone with excitement, and he felt a rush of delight that he'd come to see it.

"This whole place is the Ranger headquarters? How do you navigate? Are there pattern or maps or is it something else, like intuition?" Or maybe Sinopa could guide people? How did you keep track of that many people?

Isidora was openly panting by the end of the trip, her legs sore and shoulder complaining from carrying her bag. She wasn't sure if it was the desert, her new body, or Nico's insistence on rushing here before nightfall, but she wanted to lay down and die for a moment. Her awe at the 'town' was in part relegated to all the nooks and crannies where she thought, I'd sleep there.

But no, she needed to make a good first impression. Her posture remained straight, her demeanor remained calm, and she placed an icy paw on her forehead to try and keep herself cool. "So this place is like its own small town?" She caught something shift in the corner of her vision, and her ear twitched as she brushed it off as just being tired. "Is there a place to sit down for a moment?"

"Need a lift, Kimiko?" asked Nico, descending to circle above the Snivy's head.

If she was obliging, the Wattrel would be happy to spare her the climb down. Serpentine pokémon weren't uncommon in the Soja', and rails along buildings did exist, as they did here, to allow for them to conveniently ascend and descend buildings if they had trouble with other traversal structures.

As the Wayfarers arrived in the plaza, a couple 'mon on their way from A to B gave them a wave and a casual salute, but didn't stop to make introductions. Nobody was at the commissary right now, but there was a sign up saying to leave cash or an IOU and take what you needed. There were plenty of berries on offer, along with corn, flatbread, and cured wild game.

"You guys can sit anywhere," Nico assured them, alighting on an awning in the plaza to settle down, as if nesting. "Let's see... We're kinda like a tiny town, if you count under twenty residents at any one time a town. Most rangers are out in other towns, or staffing Ranger Stations all over. There's only ever one or two dozen rangers at HQ, most nights. Plus some civvies helping out, maybe a few visitors like you guys, or outlaws under lockup. But we've got barracks for the whole union, just in case – that's a little north of a hundred rangers, depending on if you count liaisons, retired rangers, and whathaveyou..."

There was a shadow across the plaza for a moment as another winged figure descended from on high. Was this the bird who'd been staffing the lookout tower until just now?

"Don't go on all night, Nico," called the Braviary who'd just landed atop an entryway. She waved a greeting with one wing, and bowed her head. "These civilians look tired. You should show them some beds."

"Hey there, Cascada," replied Nico, his tone friendly. "Guys, this is Ranger Braviary Cascada. She's got serious seniority on me. You'll be retiring soon, eh, ma'am?"

"I think not," said the larger bird, her beak curving very slightly in a smile. Was that an Escarpa accent in her voice...?

"Need a lift, Kimiko?" asked Nico, descending to circle above the Snivy's head.

It took a few moments for Kimiko to register what the wattrel was offering. She hadn't realized she probably looked as tired as she felt. She eyed the ladders and the rails again; she could probably get down the ladders with careful use of her vines. The rails would probably be more useful had she evolved, as she hadn't really experienced with movement in her new form. Still... they were kinda high up here, and the last thing she needed, especially while tired, was to slip, let go, and fall...

On the other hand, Nico seemed just as tired, and Kimiko hesitated to ask for special treatment just because of a stupid irrational fear...

But then again, he did offer, and hurting herself would surely be an annoying distraction from why they were here. And it would be a really stupid way to get injured, too.

"Yeah, sure. Please," she finally replied, having needlessly rationalized the decision in her head for what some might call an absurdly long amount of time.

She spent the entire ride with her eyes closed, wishing she'd been turned into a species that could simply teleport instead.

Relief flooded her the moment her tiny feet hit the ground again, and she thanked Nico for his help. Upon spotting the food, she happily dropped some coin on the countertop and put together a small banquet for herself.

Then they were joined by another Ranger, one that had a clear experience edge over their wattrel friend. Tired as she was, Kimiko thought she recognized something in the voice, something that reminded her 'no fluff'. So instead of bowing, she simply waved and introduced herself. "Pleasure to meet you!"

Food. Thank goodness. He'd ran out of his own food earlier, underestimating just how hungry this body seemed to get. Leaving a few coins, he helped himself, scarfing down the food.

He'd finished polishing off a piece of dried meat when they were joined by another mon.

Koa gazed at the Braviary, briefly awed. He'd never seen on in person before, but they were such cool bird pokemon.

Composing himself quickly, he dipped his head to avoid and awkward paw shake. "Nice to meet you Cascada. My name is Koamaru. This place is... Incredible."

"I wasn't informed there'd be visitors. What brings them here?" called a deep, rumbling voice to Nico. From the other side of the plaza, the towering form of a wyrdeer could be seen. The dark orbs in her antlers gleamed with a mysterious sheen as she began to make her way to these odd strangers.

As she drew closer, the others could see that her back was fixed with numerous satchels filled to the brim with notebooks, scrolls and writing supplies. She was peppered in dust, both dungeon and mundane, her thick, white fur stained with dark inks and styled into numerous braids each held together by a fine string and assortment of coloured stones. Vials filled with ink and dungeon dust made audible clinks! with each of her steps, creating an odd rhythm with her hoof-steps that echoed through the empty air.

"Sybil," she greeted. "I research dungeons, particularly the Divine. This place is built on top of a Mystery Dungeon, you know. Like how it shifts?" Her accent was strange, thick and unlike anything the Wayfarers would have heard up until now.

Thump, thump, thump. That was a familiar sound to a few Wayfarers, but most of all to Leaf.

Moments later, coming around the corner, was a little Nidoran with friendly eyes and not a word said. Purple, or Spike, or just plainly Nidoran, hopped down the Ranger HQ. His ears twitched and he eyed Leaf once with that same smile.

So he really did work here.

Leaf wasn't feeling tired at all, even after the double-time march the rest of the way to the HQ. How could anyone be tired with everything that was waiting for them just around the bend? Then everyone else sat down and it'd be rude if she just kept moving without them, so she also laid down, and then it turned out that she was extremely tired, actually. Huh. Well, a little break before the big meeting couldn't hurt, right?

She swapped some coins for a few berries, because apparently she was also real hungry out of nowhere, too, and watched as the two bigger pokémon approached them. "Yes," she said firmly to Sybil's question. "It's amazing. I hope we get to see more of it!

"My name's Leaf," she added, nodding to both the braviary and the big stantler, then gesturing at the group with her tail. "We're the Wayfarers. Well, some of 'em, at least. You might've heard about a bunch of offworlders showing up recently?" She shrugged for half a second and pressed on. "Our group met Chief Ayda before and told her we wanted to work together on dealing with some of the weird issues that've been happening around here lately, like, uh—" shoot, what were the words Ayda had used? "—witching beasts and people disappearing and all that. And," she added quickly, eager to get to the point now the basics were out of the way (and if she'd missed something, oh well, not her fault, she was tired, right), "some of us were hoping to actually join the Rangers, too!"

And then— welp. Leaf had expected the first face she recognized here to be Ayda or Razael or someone, but there he was, hopping around like he'd been there the whole time. She made sure to give Purple a nod and a wave hello, too.

Isidora had settled down on the floor in a shaded area against a wall, with her bag hugging her side as she chewed on the meat she bought. Her comfort was disrupted by a prickle of self-consciousness as the Rangers came to check them out. Guess we're the new attraction. Cascada seemed strong, and she couldn't help fixating on the weird-looking stantler wearing what looked almost like a satchel harness, seemingly carrying research notes. Who's she carrying all that for? Then Sybil introduced herself, and instantly she felt a shudder of guilt for having thought that. She finished eating and tried to focus more on licking her claws clean.

The sneasel followed after Leaf's introduction. Look cool. "Isidora." She lifted a paw in an aloof greeting. "Count me as 'hoping to join.' And yeah, it's a neat place." Definitely more exotic than any Guild Center.

Then, out of nowhere, that nidoran showed up. Her eyes widened with confusion and her posture against the wall straightened. "Huh?"

Wasn't that the Nidoran Leaf mentioned before? The same one from the battle... He gave the Nidoran a small wave with a paw.

He took in the new arrival curiously. A... Was that a Wyrdeer? "Koamaru," he said again. "A pleasure to meet you." He wanted to sound at least a little professional.

"You research Divine dungeons?" he asked, unable to hold back his curiosity.

"Heya, Sybil," called Nico. "The Snivy's Kimiko, and that's everyone today, but there's a score or so of others back in Front' who're on the same team, I guess you'd call it."

The Wattrel slid his flight goggles off and blinked his eyes against the fresh, dry air.

"Rangers do all sorts, as I've been telling you guys. I'm a patrol 'mon, Cascada over there is a combat specialist – like most Escarpa rangers – who goes after bounties and deep dungeon delves and such, and Wyrdeer Sybil here is a researcher. Not a lotta researchers in the Rangers, but it's important work. No sense in calling ourselves dungeon experts if we aren't at the edge of rift research!"

"Sybil," she greeted. "I research dungeons, particularly the Divine. This place is built on top of a Mystery Dungeon, you know. Like how it shifts?" Her accent was strange, thick and unlike anything the Wayfarers would have heard up until now.

A sudden booming voice drew Kimiko's attention. She didn't recognize the species of the large white stantler-like 'mon that the voice belonged to, but she looked like an important 'mon around here.

"Kimiko," the snivy introduced herself, feeling a little sheepish after spacing out long enough that Nico had to do it for her. "Forgive my ignorance, but I'm a little new to dungeon delving... What makes a dungeon 'divine'?"

Purple, or Spike, or just plainly Nidoran, hopped down the Ranger HQ.

She turned at the sound of yet another newcomer to greet them - it was sure lively around here. She didn't recognize the little purple nidoran either, but the ponyta (Leaf, she'd said, thankfully, because Kimiko still hadn't asked her name) seemed to. She offered a polite smile and a little wave.

I'm a patrol 'mon, Cascada over there is a combat specialist – like most Escarpa rangers

Suddenly, the braviary's accent clicked in her head, and she turned to the great bird. "You're part of the Escarpa clan?" That news lifted her tired spirits a little bit - she'd been rather worried about having to choose one or the other. But if she could work with both...

Purple happily greeted them with a nod as he usually did. And also as he usually did, he said nothing and listened in on the conversation. How much he followed or understood was only known to the strange "Ranger Mascot."

Sybil looked between Kimiko and Koa and nodded. There was a slight sparkle in her eye at their expression of interest in her work. "I research all kinds of dungeons," she answered, "but the Divine are by far my favourite." She looked between her fellow Rangers before turning back to the Wayfarers. "If you would indulge me, a Divine Dungeon is a dungeon that is formed around the domain of a Saint, feeding off its power to create something awe inspiring, unlike anything else on Forlas. They're immensely powerful and you never know what you may find or encounter within one."

She eyed the massive stack of scrolls that hung from her flank. "Right now, I am investigating the domain of the Purifying Spirit. Relatively tame in terms of what a Divine Dungeon could be but difficult as the dungeon itself will only appear at certain times."

Koa's brain kicked into overdrive for a moment and his tail began to wag slightly, but he quickly tried to not look too over eager. "That's si- fascinating." He wondered if she'd take him into one if he asked. Another, even more captivating thought took hold. Could the Purifying Spirit cure him if he had been corrupted? "I would love to hear more about them," he said with a dip of his head. There, that was professional sounding.

"How many divine dungeons are here? Is there a pattern to how they appear? Can you see the le- Saints in them and have you ever been to the end? What kind of pokemon is the Purifying Spirit like?"
