The Battle for Asber

Round Seven, Act One

This time, Giratina is pleased to see, none of its opponents appear interested in dropping from the sky. Convenient--it's so bothersome to have to snag them as they fall. Ventus does look like she's working herself up to something big, but she's simply not fast enough to outrun the dragon when it's in a puckish mood. A moment of focus from Giratina, and a psychic vise closes around the swellow's midriff, pinning her in place. Ventus lets out an enraged screech and beats her wings furiously, but remains stuck in place, bound by Giratina's telekinetic powers.

Below, Darkrai and Mewtwo are preparing their own attacks. Ventus can just see them if she twists her head around and peers straight down. Blue light blossoms in each of the legendaries' palms as they summon icy energy. The weary swellow knows where that attack is going. So they've finally had enough of her, have they? Think they're going to finish her off now that they've got her pinioned? Hah! As if! Ventus braces herself, letting the telekinesis support her as she prepares to endure whatever attacks come her way. The legends reach out, their fingers encrusted with frost, and release their attacks--at Ptah, not Ventus.

The two ice beams converge on Ptah, knocking him into a vicious tumble as ice crusts on his wings and claws. Ventus grinds her beak in irritation. She doesn't think the gliscor's going to be recovering from that; he's dropping like a stone.

Meanwhile, Mr. Wonderful is kicking his singing up another notch, abandoning all pretense of tone and rhythm and simply blaring his trololos out as loudly as he can. It's a cacaphony that could wake the dead--or at least annoy them considerably, as is the case with Umbra, who goes invisible in a huff and edges away from his teammate--and is certainly enough to put a spark of life back into a comatose teammate. As Ptah plummets towards the epicenter of the racket, he is knocked clear of his daze of pain and cold. The gliscor is hanging onto consciousness, if only barely, and manages to right himself before he falls past Mr. Wonderful. A powerful kick of his wings shatters the ice binding them, and most of it sloughs away in the harsh sunlight. Ptah frees his claws with twin cracks, then begins a slow climb, trying to stay focused on the battle and not on his fatigue.

While Ptah labors up from below, Umbra is ghosting across the arena at top speed, looking to attack Darkrai from an unexpected angle. The legend is glowering down at Ptah, no doubt displeased that its target managed to survive the ice beams, and Umbra is easily able to sneak around behind it. A ball of fire grows in the air in front of it, expanding rapidly in the heat of the sun. A faint crackling noise is enough to cause Darkrai and Mewtwo to turn, but by that point it's too late for Umbra's target to evade the attack; the fire blast is already launched and in the process of unfurling its burning arms, and it plows straight into its surprised target.

Wary of retaliation, Umbra starts sneaking away again just after releasing the attack, but he has little need to worry. Darkrai is about to be distracted by Ptah, who has finally managed to return to the battlefield proper. The gliscor sags with weariness, but after a few seconds to gather himself, is able to get started on his attack. His stubby wings beat swiftly, conjuring up a steady stream of wind that has Darkrai ducking its head and straining to stay in place while its shroudlike body flutters and billows behind it. Ventus grins and joins in the attack herself, the telekinesis holding her body in place but doing nothing to prevent her wings from flapping. The swellow joins in Ptah's attack with gusto, and the wind from both their attacks combines into a significant gale that not only buffets Darkrai but annoys Mewtwo, floating just beside it. The defog shreds the energy making up the legend's safeguard, and as its shield fails, the spell is broken. The green glow around Mewtwo winks out, and Giratina goes totally invisible, the aura it had been sporting vanishing in an instant.

That's all Aries needs to see. While Darkrai is still pinned, braced against the wind, the cottonee swoops in and scatters golden dust over its opponent. The liberal sprinkling of stun spore is enough to slow even Darkrai down, and the legend coughs, claws twitching and eyes screwed up with discomfort as paralysis takes hold of its body.

Round Seven, Act Two

It's unsatisfying to leave Gliscor's demise unfinished, but Mewtwo is sure Giratina will be able to finish the job. For now, he has other business to attend to. The legend puts a paw on his partner's shaking shoulder, and in the blink of an eye, the two of them vanish from the battlefield.

Ventus lets out a squawk of surprise and nearly gives herself a crick in her neck from craning it around, trying to see where the legends have gone. They're nowhere in sight, though, and her search is cut short by the wide arc of dark energy that spreads out across the battlefield, cast by the invisible Giratina. The dark pulse, spread out as it is, only stings a bit, but it does take her mind off locating the other two legends for the moment. And it's definitely enough to knock the last of the fight out of Ptah, who falls unconscious as soon as the wave of negative energy washes over him. The gliscor slips into another uncontrolled dive, carrying his unlucky trainer with him.

Aries, meanwhile, is so overwhelmed by the burning hatred that ripples through the dark pulse that he can't concentrate on anything else. The cottonee tries to fold his leaves over his face, but his thick cotton coat stops him short. He settles for closing his eyes and cringing, hoping desperately to go unnoticed before Giratina's rage.

Of all those struck by the dark pulse, Umbra is the only one not badly shaken. It's sheer luck that the attack lands on the invisible lampent, and Umbra can't help but be a bit jealous of Mr. Wonderful, who is safely below the plane of the attack and caterwauling away without a care in the world, but it's not a bad blow. What Umbra is really more interested in is where his targets have gone off to. Like Ventus, he tries to take in the whole arena, revolving in place as he sweeps his gaze around. Mewtwo and Darkrai truly do seem to have vanished, though. The lampent is almost ready to despair of ever figuring out where they've gotten to before a couple of specks silhouetted against the burning sun catch his eye. The lampent stops moving and considers. Could that be them, way up there? Well, maybe. They're a long way off now, certainly well out of the reach of any of his attacks. For the moment, though, he's really got nothing better to do than take off and see if he can't reach them. It's going to be a long climb, but at least he doesn't have to worry about the legends noticing him creeping up on their location.

Round Seven, Act Three

All the way up here, Mr. Wonderful's bellowing is no more than a faint chirping, a little annoying, perhaps, but not all that distracting. Darkrai snoozes undisturbed, healing off the damage inflicted on it by the defenders' concentrated assault. The rest has already eliminated the legends' newly-contracted paralysis, and the deep gashes left by the sky attacks have mostly closed. Mewtwo floats nearby, peering down at the battlefield below. Its opponents are no more than little specks, though at least it has the advantage of not having to stare up into the sun to see them. It has little chance of hitting most of them, jittering around the arena like they are, but there's one that remains perfectly still. If Mewtwo takes its time and aims well, it doesn't have to worry about the possibility of failure.

The legend clenches one fist, concentrating mightily. The sun's unusual strength is starting to fail, but for now it still glares down with merciless intensity. It's hard to wring lightning from such a punishingly open sky, but if anyone can do it, it's Mewtwo. A great thunderbolt rips down out of the blue, its brilliant flash visible even through Mewtwo's closed eyelids, and continues its long journey to earth by roaring right through Ventus. The swellow doesn't know what hit her; there is just a horrible boom, a brilliant flash, and then darkness. As the telekinesis holding her in place decays, the unconscious swellow is left to slip into the start of what will surely prove to be a long plummet.

Aries backpedals with a cry as the lightning bolt goes shooting past, temporarily blinded and disoriented. Even after he recovers his composure--after his embarrassingly craven performance on the last action, he's hoping to restore at least a little dignity--he's visibly shaken. The fading sunlight doesn't help his confidence, but he gathers his courage and looks around for the legends. They continue to be nowhere nearby, and Aries is tempted to simply give up there. Then there is a sudden flare of brilliance, as though the failing sunlight were giving one final display of power, and Aries looks up, only to find that the sun has competition.

Umbra glows red-hot, his location temporarily visible as he gathers power. The ghost is currently hovering some distance behind Darkrai, his sleeping target. Fire gathers around the ghost as he raises his body temperature to dangerous levels, then washes over Darkrai in a great wave of flame. The legend shudders and twitches but remains deep in its trance, not quite done healing yet. Now that the attack is over, Umbra is perfectly transparent again--and quick to zip off to a new location on the battlefield, no matter how tired he might be in the wake of overheat. Aries, meanwhile, has reluctantly determined that up is where he needs to go, and he starts to float up to join his partners overhead, easily overtaking Mr. Wonderful as he closes with new location of the fight.

Giratina, meanwhile, relaxes for a bit. No one's been bothering it for a while, and in its diffuse form, it can almost imagine itself free and back in its home plane, able to slip unhindered through that twisted shadow dimension. The way things are going, it will be returning to that plane soon--after it finishes laying waste to this one, of course. As the dragon calms itself and hones its focus, Mr. Wonderful goes drifting past ever so slowly. This puts a dent in Giratina's mood; the spiritomb is still blaring away at the top of his lungs and, seeing everyone else on the rise, has decided to go join them. It'll just take him a while to reach them up there.

Mr. Wonderful isn't the only one on his way up. Reinforcements arrive from below in the form of Effercon, hanging awkwardly from the chilly planes of his cryogonal's body, and RespectTheBlade, seated with Derpy on his druddigon's back. The gargoyle dragon's jagged wings furiously--it's hard enough for them to support Medusa in the air; adding two humans to the mix is about at the limit of the dragon's flight capabilities. Meanwhile, Frost ghosts along effortlessly, baleful blue eyes trained on the fight overhead.

Extending the DQ period to 10 PM Sunday. Sorry for the late notice; I'd forgotten it was supposed to be earlier this week.

The referee is paying only passing attention to the battle, laptop propped open on one knee and one hand pecking away at top speed. A gesture with the baton in her other hand swats a meteor aside, but she doesn't even glance up from the screen. Only after thunder rolls and a charred swellow goes plummeting past does she smile and close her computer with a decisive click. She urges her aerodactyl higher, until she hovers squarely in the middle of the arena. She raises her referee baton over her head, fiddles with a couple of buttons, then announces in an amplified voice that booms out even over the chaos of battle, "It has come to my attention that the legendary team has been making use of priviledged information, in violation of the terms of engagement. Therefore, as punishment..."

Her voice cuts out with a zip of static as the baton shoots out of her hand. The referee jerks back in shock, hair frizzing out in all directions, while the baton makes an escape, trailing a crackling tail of sparks as it goes. The sky flickers and warps, the battlefield flashing from empty air to the humid depths of the jungle, a searing desert, a craggy mountaintop and, for a terrifying instant, the crushing black of the ocean depths. Sandstorms rage, then blow themselves into pelting hailstorms before vanishing entirely. Some pokémon spontaneously evolve or devolve, while others feel the sudden urge to get their fingers twitching; and, for one brief instant, Mewtwo is transformed into a small pink magikarp, as the purloined baton flashes and sparks, rewriting the rules of reality at random as uncontrolled electrical charge rattles through it. The referee's aerodactyl rallies from the brief shock and takes off after it. A mischievous face emerges from the halo of electricity surrounding the baton, and Kupo the rotom sneers at her pursuer before releasing the baton from her possession, snapping the world back to normal in an instant and sending the device into free fall--and straight into the hands of HighMoon, waiting just below.

The trainer rides behind Coloursfall on L'Arc-en-Ciel, the mutant togekiss' purple-splashed wings beating steadily to keep its riders aloft. HighMoon giddily waves the baton over her head and yells, "I don't think so!" It's now her voice ringing across the arena, amplified by the power of the stolen baton.

Coloursfall adds, "We're sick and tired of playing nice with you misguided fools! Can't you see the legends are only fighting for their freedom? You should be battling to bring Negrek down, not them!"

"Join us and fight for the side of right!" HighMoon adds.

A brief mental conversation passes between the two conscious legends. Humans are tiresome creatures to work with at best, and so far as they're concerned, they have all the need--the "trainers" that allow them to particpate in battle. Nevertheless, associating with a demigod tends to strain a mortal's mental faculties, and their chosen puppets are flagging a bit. pathos has fallen asleep along with Darkrai, and allitersonance is spinning in circles, giggling, which isn't that far off the normal but nevertheless isn't the most helpful behavior in terms of strategic planning. Mewtwo nods. Excellent. Welcome to the team, both of you. It's good to see that Asber is not totally lacking in just humans. It spreads its paws and looks down on the battlefield. Anyone else? This is your last opportunity to join us. If you insist on fighting on--well, we will be forced to destroy you, of course.

The referee glances down at the trainers and grimaces as she rummages in her pockets, but if any of them were thinking of taking Mewtwo up on his offer, they are cut off by a yell of, "Yeah, right! Like we have any reason to trust you!"

This proves to have come from Blastoise, who is being borne aloft by the psychic powers of his haunter. The cloud of ice crystals and malice cracks a grin, a wide red slash opening in his gray-white face, and flips Mewtwo off with both hands.

Oh? I don't have to extend you any mercy at all, you know. But very well. If you would rather fight to the death for some inane cause, I won't try to change your mind. The legend clenches its fist, the air around it humming with psychic power.

"Huh. Bring it on, then!" Blastoise yells back. Whirlpool, floating near Blastoise and under Mort's power as well, looks a little less enthusiastic, but the murkrow he's brought to the fight is raring to go. Jet caws with delight and flies broad loops around his trainer, showing off his impressive aerial maneuverability. The other pokémon on the field make various shows of their willingness to fight, some with more gusto than others; Aries, out alone between the two clusters of pokémon, is feeling a bit nervous, but manages a small chirp of assent nonetheless.

Coloursfall laughs. "How cute--and how pathetic. You're never going to win against us!"

Final Notes
- Sorry about the dialogue. Ordinarily I don't like to put words in people's mouths, but I wasn't seeing how this scene would work at all without it.
- So, a few changes to the battle structure at this point. For the forseeable future, Coloursfall and HighMoon will be taking over control of the legends.
- For the moment, Team Asber has seven members on the field, but the first two pokémon knocked out on their team will not be replaced, so this is just a temporary state of affairs; they'll normally have five, as previously.
- The chance of meteor strikes is reduced to 10%/pokémon/round.
- Team Asber may choose which pokémon gets sent in once one of theirs knocked out, rather than having it be random.
- Not a rules change, but a clarification: your prize for this battle depends primarily on your level of participation; your pokémon can last for round and rounds on the battlefield, but if you had little to no hand in making that happen, you can't expect much EXP/money for it.
- Hopefully that clears everything up. Let's finally get this show back on the road! DQ 10 PM next Sunday.

feh, no sense of subtlety. protip: if you want to take over some section of the world, at least do it without enough noise that the inhabitants will want to rebel.

and gods, at least leave it intact to take over after you deal with the resistance; there isn't much fun in destroying things while you're busy with something else.

also get a grip on yourselves, will you?

TksoL.png

Honestly I'm not scared of any sort of 'revolution', I could quash such a thing easily - you forget, I have the largest squad in the League, and loopy loopy lunchbox over there is second. Now why don't you go off and plan your futile struggles some more?

feh, your army is unimpressive. as army size increases, the efficiency of crowd control methods increase, while the efficiency of conventional battle decreases.

although to my knowledge, you have little grasp of either. but we will see.

Oh, Colours, dear, no. We'll get you fixed up after the battle, the League's Alakazam will put your and your pokémon's head right. It'll be okay! Of course, you'll be sued for breaking confidentiality, but... In the meantime, AWW YEAH I got dialogue and I was awesome.

EDIT: Negrek, Mort says he's offended at being called 'psychic' but that he'll forgive you if you send him some frozen grapes.
