Aries floated upwards to stare down at all five Growlithes, addressing them all at once but seeking to anger only one of them. Can’t even beat a grass-type without hiding within a bunch of clones? he sneered, swooping about overhead. The Cottonee even dared to dip in front of a few Growlithe muzzles, despite inwardly shrieking in fear. What a coward, what an incompetent fighter! Battle like a real Pokemon! Cainus found it tremendously ironic that a Cottonee, who were known to rely on their pranks and tricks, was telling him to fight for real. Nevertheless, he could not help but be goaded into a helpless rage.
Snarling in fury, Cainus completely disregarded his commands and launched himself at the Cottonee bobbing over his head. The five Growlithe closed in and began lashing and biting, though the attack was uncoordinated and barely effective. It didn’t take long for Aries to struggle and float away, hardly looking worse for wear, a mocking laugh bubbling from his throat.
Washibon took a moment to roll his eyes at his hot-headed partner, then hopping around the ruins, looking for a particularly rough rock. When he found one, the bird began to rub his talons against it, sharpening their deadly points. Washibon had just finished and was admiring his honed weapons when it felt like a boulder had landed between his shoulder blades. This boulder was, in fact, William’s head. Washibon was easily thrown to the ground, gasping as his stomach hit the floor harshly, William’s rock-hard head still pressing his spine. The poor Rufflet could barely squawk in pain. Just as Washibon thought his spine was about to break, William stood up rather shakily, blinking as if he had a headache. Whimpering, Washibon struggled to his feet and observed his new, ugly bruises.
After his previous failure of an attack, Cainus was determined to show Aries who was boss. That stupid plant was going to get fried. The Growlithe rapidly raised his body temperature until he was glowing a dangerous red and the air around him was distorted with heat. Sensing danger, Aries quickly hid his face behind his leaves while creating a shield before him. Cainus did not see the shimmering barrier until it was too late. With a roar he released the pent-up heat, only to watch it bounce harmlessly off of Aries’s Protect. Cainus roared again, this time out of sheer frustration.
Eager to put distance between himself and William’s rock-like head, Washibon took flight, wincing with each wingbeat as his bruised shoulders screamed in protest. Nevertheless, the Rufflet climbed higher, higher still, until the battlers were but ants on the pavement and meteors screamed uncomfortably close overhead.
William watched his adversary take to the skies, then shrugged. He’d just settle with beating up Cainus, instead. In place of electricity, a golden aura of fighting energy surrounded William’s fist. Tendrils of the glow reached greedily towards one of the Growlithe. By a miraculous stroke of luck, that Growlithe was the real one: when William dealt a solid punch to Cainus’s shoulder, he gave a yelp of pain and surprise. His concentration broken, the other clones abruptly disappeared. Tendrils from the golden aura seemed to dig into the dog’s skin, pulling life force from Cainus and transferring it to William. The Scraggy sighed in relief as his bruises lightened somewhat.
Cainus howled at his throbbing shoulder, then decided to take out his frustration on his preferred target: Aries. A snarl was bubbling in his throat when Aries began to shake itself, as if dislodging spores. Cainus was beyond livid at this point and decided to attack Aries anyway, despite explicit orders to Protect should any malady head his way. The Growlithe was panting in fury, so the Stun Spore was easily whisked into his lungs. Fighting off the sudden stiffening of his muscles, Cainus gave a throaty snarl. Aries shivered, the growl invoking within him a primal fear. The waves of chilling dark energy did nothing to alleviate the fears.
William created an impenetrable barrier in anticipation of a particularly dangerous attack. Washibon, however, noticed the greenish gleam of the shield, even eighty metres up in the air, and opted to stay airborne. Slightly frustrated, William let the unaccomplished shield fall.
