Sojaveña Wilds Clan Battlegrounds

As the others had decided to go for Sierra and Viento, Bellatrix instead pivoted to Piedra's position, her blows swift yet calculated. The Escarpa spoke through battle and ignoring one of their fighters or focusing down a single fighter would likely be seen as dirty and taken as an insult, so equal dishings it was. Just what was the luxray capable of? How did she hold herself in battle? Just as she finished analyzing between blows, Bellatrix had swiftly retreated. Could the warriors keep pace with her?

And they were off! The Luxray trio took their hits without even a wince, Viento's muzzle set in a battle-ready snarl and Piedra's face showing a fierce excitement to take a few attacks herself. Sierra took the brunt of the initial offence, but you wouldn't know it to look at her – she wore a calm, confident smile on her face before crouching into a proper battle stance.

From the look of it, the Wayfarers would need to perform well, building their tactical advantages as the battle continued, in order to have a shot at winning. These Escarpa warriors were tough!

Dave's AGILE Rage was dodged!
Dave's Rage dealt 5 damage to Viento!
Dave's Assurance dealt 22 damage to Viento!
Wes' Rogue Skill! He dropped Sierra's Res by 1!
Jade's Support Skill! She buffed Bellatrix's Def by 1!
Bellatrix's Quick Attack dealt 8 damage to Piedra!
Bellatrix's Quick Attack dealt 7 damage to Piedra!
Bellatrix's U-Turn dealt 9 damage to Piedra!
Bellatrix's Spotter Feat! Piedra's Ability is Guts.

Kimiko's Magical Leaf dealt 16 damage to Sierra!
Kimiko's Aura Sphere dealt 17 damage to Sierra!
Kimiko's Leaf Tornado dealt 16 damage to Sierra!

Meanwhile, Sol circled the battlefield on the wing, and Ria took up a position at the overlook, using the high ground to secure a good vantage point for any well-aimed strikes.

Halcón met Gladion's gaze with a sanguine smile, and raised a brow. "Oh, you'll find out," he said, evenly, prowling away from the main melée and towards the Null.

Turn 1
Enemy Phase

The Escarpa Luxray broke into a quick battle chatter of their own, honed by long practice. They had no telepathic network and intuitive reading of each other's tactics like the Wayfarers, but they may as well have, given how easily they understood one another!

The Escarpa Clan lived to train in the art of combat.

"Dropping!" barked Viento.

"Receiving!" shouted Piedra, back. "Taking centre!"

Viento's STRONG Thunder Fang, boosted by terrain, dealt 37 damage to Dave! Paralyzed!
Dave's Rage grew! He struck Viento for 7 dmg.
Viento dashed to Overlook.
Viento's Snarl dealt 8 damage to Astrid! -1 Mag
Viento roared Astrid off the Overlook! Astrid was hurt from the fall.

Apparently 'dropping' meant rushing towards Astrid and loosing a Roar powerful enough to send her hurtling off the overlook, landing in the electrically-active dust below. This must be a staple strategy of theirs, one imagined...

Piedra hit Astrid as she landed, then dashed off herself to deliver a Snarl to the rest of the party.

Piedra's STRONG Thunder Fang, boosted by terrain, dealt 26 damage to Astrid!
Piedra dashed to the Tall Grass.
Piedra's Snarl dealt 7 damage to Bellatrix and 5 to Kimiko! -1 Mag! +1 Mag!
Piedra used Protect!

Sol's Spotter Skill! He learned Kimiko's Ability!

"Snivy is Contrary! That's a Contrary Snivy!" called out Sol from above, mildly and without particular alarm.

"I can see that," spat Piedra, halfway laughing as she prepared her next attack. She wouldn't make that mistake again...

Sierra didn't waste words, and judging by the crackling storm around her mane, her next attack would bring a world of hurt to whoever was unfortunate enough to be in its way.

Boss Action: Sierra cleared her Res debuff!

Sierra's Charged Thunder Fang, boosted by terrain, dealt 46 damage to Dave!
Sierra's AGILE Fire Fang dealt 18 damage to Bellatrix! Burned!
Sierra's Fire Fang dealt 30 damage to Kimiko!
Sierra's Howl boosted her and Piedra's Attack!
Sierra used Charge! +1 Res!

Ria's Support Skill! She boosted Sierra's Res by 1!

Boss Attack: Sierra is preparing Supercell Slam, targeting the Tall Grass!

Halcón met Gladion's gaze with a sanguine smile, and raised a brow. "Oh, you'll find out," he said, evenly, prowling away from the main melée and towards the Null.

Gladion would have smiled back, if he could have. Instead, he used the only kind of body language that his current species was made for, in the form of lunging out for a Body Press.

“Good!” he said, his voice carrying an anticipation, intrigue, and perhaps even some excitement.

Dave was left behind, breathing raggedly as Viento ran off after Astrid. His muscles ached, stiff with lingering electricity, pain singing in his flesh after Sierra and Viento's charged fangs ripped him open. Fuck.

He struggled to pull an Oran out of his bag. Viento was sending the Ninetales hurtling off the cliff, back turned to him for now. What if...

Yeah. Dave swallowed the Oran and did the quick claw-sharpening move the Escarpa's assassins did. If he just came up behind him, hit him in a way he didn't expect, and then went for it with one hard, well-aimed strike to topple him off balance...

He put on a heave of effort and charged, muscles burning with the strain of moving at all.

As expected, Sierra had fire fang at her disposal. Definitely hurt less than if she'd taken flames from Pyrrin... but it still hurt. She danced away from the luxray chieftain to put some distance between them while she planned her next move, and her allies took over her position.

"Snivy is Contrary! That's a Contrary Snivy!" called out Sol from above, mildly and without particular alarm.

"I can see that," spat Piedra, halfway laughing as she prepared her next attack. She wouldn't make that mistake again...

At that, Kimiko turned to the luxray who'd just struck her with the dark-type energy - Piedra - and offered a smirk and a wink. "Thanks for the boost!" she teased. "Let me show ya my appreciation~!"

She leapt up and, with a few mid-air flicks of her tail, rained down a barrage of leaves and elemental energy.

Jade slipped through the tall grass, narrowly ducking under the Luxray that came bounding out of nowhere letting out a harsh snarl that cut through the aura. Jade grit her teeth and tried to call on the energy for a counterattack, but then froze when she felt a static crackle rolling over the ground. The air around Sierra thrummed with power--something terrible was coming.

"We gotta go, now!" Jade called out, waving her arms to get her teammates' attention! "Back up the hill, come on!" Sure, it'd put them at risk of getting knocked over the ledge like what'd happened to Astrid, but anything was better than being down in the tall grass when Sierra's attack hit.

Jade's Support Aux: +1 Spd to Astrid

King of the hill. Fine. Astrid planted in the dirt and, with an uncanny boost from Jade's words alone, somehow, Astrid could find a foothold that wouldn't have been there before. Frustration fueled her ascent and opportunity fueled what came next--Dave rounded up the slope at the same time, they both noticed Viento alone, and briefly, there was an understanding.

"Dropping!" Leading with a blast of Ice, she threw what weight she had into his flank, aiming at his center of gravity in the direction of where she'd just tumbled down.

Bellatrix winced but showed no emotion at the lingering burn from Sierra's fangs, her eye carefully trained on the luxray. "Two can play at that game," she said, lowering herself down to spring into another attack. She looked towards the others, silently asking to leave Sierra to her for now.

She leapt, claws ready to swipe yet this would prove itself to be nothing more than a mere feint, as when Sierra predictably dodged, Bellatrix deftly sent small, burning flames of her own directly towards where Sierra would be. She could glean a lot from how the lurxay moved - a look that could clearly be gleaned from the zoroark's expression. The result of that had caused Bellatrix to act quickly, Hexing Sierra twice before leaping away from any electrified terrain.

Pyrrin was more than happy to make his location known, wreathing himself in flames as he ran. He had decided to allow most of the fight pass him in order to go after some of the less attended to fighters, like the meowth and the chimera. The houndoom made his flames shoot wide, trying to catch the two together.

Wes darted and weaved around their foes, kicking sand and firing rocks wherever he could. Sometimes they hit their mark, and he got a surge of satisfaction—other times he missed entirely and inwardly cursed at himself. He needed to practice hitting moving targets more often, it seemed.

He managed to land a particularly solid hit on Pyrrin, though, and couldn’t help himself. “How’s that for an outsider?” he sneered at the Houndoom.

All of these Escarpa warriors were a real threat, but Sierra was undoubtedly the biggest one. She struck with frightening force, every move quick and calculated. In other words, she was a bit of a problem.

Wes managed to slip past an arc of electricity and got in close enough to howl in her ear—a high, obnoxious pitch that would leave her reeling, if only for a bit. Hopefully that would slow her down.

Interact result: Viento was moved to Dusty Approach! He was hurt by his fall!

Viento yowled, jaguar-like, as a pair of fighters took him physically off the overlook himself. He landed well, clearly having had practice, but he'd not been prepared to have his tactic turned on him so early in the fight.

"They learn quickly," he barked, with a sawing growl. "We should turn our winds."

"Oh? Suggestions?" replied Piedra, with what might have been Escarpa sarcasm.

"Fortify!" spat Viento.

"Counter that," came Sol, from above. "Alternating current."

"Mark it," called Ria, from the overlook, taking pot-shots of Ice-type energy at her opponents.

"Mark it!"

"Mark it!"

"Marked!"

Whatever the Escarpa battle-chatter meant, they'd clearly agreed on a new tactic. The Wayfarers could only guess just what it was, but it seemed Sierra was unconcerned with it for now, her golden eyes flicking between targets as she gauged where to direct her crashing storm of electric power.

👁️ Intel:

Astrid's Spotter Feat!

Aggro rankings:
Astrid > Dave > Bellatrix > Kimiko.
It seems like there is a similar amount attention on each fighter...

Bellatrix' Spotter Feat!

Sierra isn't holding back as such, but she's fighting optimally for a show fight, not to defeat a hated enemy. For now, that means using Charge and Howl at the end of each round, followed by an impressive telegraphed Supercell Slam. Enormously strong, but avoidable and predictable. However, Supercell Slam is a risky attack: if Sierra had to travel too far to land the attack, or her target were too evasive or well-protected, she'd certainly pay for it.
(This behaviour might change if the flow of battle turns in the Wayfarers' favour.)

Sierra relocated to Rough Slope...
Boss Attack! Sierra's Supercell Slam dealt a CRITICAL 45 dmg to Kimiko!

The attack wasn't so bad for having been retargeted on Kimiko, and she more than the rest could take a good Electric-type hit, but the thunderous blow from the chieftain would still leave a mark.

Viento walked to Rough Slope.
Viento used Protect!
Viento used his Weather Orb – Rough Slope became Sunny!
Viento is Flinching and can't do more!

"Salt and sand," cursed Viento, blinking away his disorientation. "I'm earthed for a moment!"

"Heard," replied Piedra. "Covering!"

Apparently Viento was the type to go on the defence when thrown off his rhythm. Whatever this 'alternating current' strategy was, he was having trouble joining it.

Piedra dashed to Rough Slope – her AGILE Thunder Fang dealt 15 dmg to Kimiko!
Piedra dashed to Overlook.
Piedra's Snarl hit everyone! -1 Mag!
Astrid: 3 dmg!
Dave: 4 dmg!
Bellatrix: 8 dmg!
Piedra's Thunder Fang dealt 27 dmg to Dave!

Sierra dashed to Overlook – her AGILE Thunder Fang dealt 17 dmg to Bellatrix!
Sierra's Fire Fang dealt 23 dmg to Astrid! Burned!
Boss Action! Sierra's next attack will hit everyone.
Sierra's Thunder Fang hit everyone!
Astrid: 10 dmg!
Dave: 15 dmg!
Bellatrix: 11 dmg!
Sierra used Howl! +1 Atk! Piedra gained +1 Atk!
Sierra used Charge! +1 Res!
Sierra's Intimidate! Everyone's Atk fell by 1!
Sierra took recoil damage from her Confusion! She was hurt by her burn!

Ria's Support Skill! She buffed Sierra's Acc!
Sol's Spotter Skill! He learned Dave's Ability!

"Poochyena has Pickpocket," called Sol. "We have a Pickpocket Poochyena."

"The dog's a strength-thief?" asked Piedra, incredulously. "Can his species learn that skill?"

"Apparently. Viento, that one's your favoured target."

"Heard," growled the Luxray.

The warriors hadn't tried their Roar strategy this time – perhaps because Viento was ill-prepared to make the most of it. The Escarpa wouldn't stick to just one tactic, evidently.

Boss Attack: Sierra is preparing Supercell Slam, targeting Overlook!

It seems Astrid has slightly more attention on her right now.

"They're persistent, but fragile," observed Sierra as she charged her next hammer-blow attack, within earshot of the nearer Wayfarers. "We could pick them off one by one in a warfighting scenario. Hard offensive lean. At least it is deftly done."

"They could pick us off just the same," remarked Ria, coolly.

"Time may show it," replied Sierra, her mane crackling with stored power.

The way Halcón was luring him away from the other fighters wasn’t lost on him, but at the same time… “If I’m trying to keep you away from your allies, and you’re trying to pull me away from mine, are we just sparring each other?”

That was fine by him. He hoped the numbers disparity was enough that pulling Pyrrin off the main fight to take advantage of his isolation wasn’t worth it. There was a purity, a different sort of feeling to fighting without allies involved. Would Pyrrin have bested him like this, or would he have avoided getting torched without Mhynt’s plan pulling him away? There would be no such questions this fight, he hoped.

He moved into a series of quicker, lower-effort blows. He doubted he’d be able to track Halcón effectively with attacks like before, and if he kept going hard Halcón would just have to watch as Gladion burnt himself out shadowboxing the spot he’d been moments ago. In using more, lighter attacks Gladion hoped to turn that around and threaten to leave Halcón expensing more effort avoiding him than he was spending on his attacks: The same way Hazel would fight flying foes she couldn’t reach. And if Halcón realized that, hopefully they’d get to fight for real.

“I’d be cool with that.”

The mighty slam from the chieftain sent Kimiko reeling, worse even than the fire fang had! Still, she managed to get back to her feet. Not with ease, but she still had fight left in her. By the time she recovered, though, Sierra had moved on, carrying her assault on to the rest of the party. At the very least, while Kimiko bore the brunt of the super-charged attack, everyone else had been spared from it, so that alone was worth it.

Piedra wasn't far behind and suddenly Kimiko felt another shock to her system before she, too, went the way of her chieftain. A quick, sneaky attack, but it wasn't enough to fell the snivy.

A third luxray approached, this one looking a bit more worn out than the others; Viento, then, the one that had tumbled off the Overlook. Kimiko was about to turn her attention on him, but he stumbled... and in favor of not kicking a 'mon while he's down, she let him be. Plus, the suddden harshness of the sun meant a fire attack was surely coming her way, and she really did not want to be anywhere within range of his teeth.

Everyone else looked to be heading back to the grass to escape another powerful blast from Sierra. Bellatrix was the first that caught her eye, so Kimiko called out to her. "Be mindful of Viento here on your way by!"

With little time to go for an offensive, Kimiko figured it was time to try out those shadow abilities for a quick strike, aiming a shadow-fied aura sphere at Piedra in the distance before following her squad, popping an oran into her mouth as she ran.

They'd successfully dropped Viento off the cliff, but Sierra was preparing another big attack again, Dave's hackles rising instinctively at the building charge in the air. His muscles were still aching, felt like rigid sticks.

Bellatrix urgently relayed over Betel's communication network that she'd got it - Sierra wouldn't be able to direct her attack too far away. Okay. Okay. So if they could just all make their way to the other side of the battleground, she wouldn't manage to get them, or trip over herself in the attempt.

He didn't have the muscles to run all the way over here, not in a million years - but he did have an Escape Orb in his bag, brought for times just like this. He wouldn't have time for an Oran too, but if they could just hunker down...

Bellatrix grit her teeth. Both frustrated at how quickly she was being worn down and exhilarated by the fight. It had been too long since she had faced an opponent that posed an actual challenge. However if she kept pushing herself, she would find herself own for the count much quicker than she would have liked, so she played defensive, trying to find an opportunity to recuperate but not before getting in her own cheap shots on Sierra and Piedra, trying to find any openings in the Escarpa's defences.

Wes bit out a curse as the electricity coursed through him. Gods, that was really damn unpleasant. He wasn’t even weak to it, but he thought he might almost prefer taking a water or leaf barrage to the face over the Luxrays’ electric attacks.

It was far too soon to let himself slow down, though. He lunged again at Sierra with a defiant bark.

Attack debuff @Sierra

Jade coughed hard, blinking back tears at the corners of her eyes from the sheer force of Sierra's attacks hitting like a truck. Her paws clutched at the grass, muscles wracked with pain, that buried instinct in the back of her head screaming to get away.

But she could still move. She wasn't trapped, wasn't powerless, wasn't back there.

In true Pokémon fashion, her body wasn't down yet, so she had to keep going. The sweet juices of an Oran soothed the worst of it, and she picked herself up, hurling a few thorns when she saw an opening, grabbing at Wes's aura with Assist to land a ground-type strike. Until that static charge started building again, and she knew they only had so much time before another attack from Sierra.

"Brace yourselves, everyone!" Jade yelled, gritting her teeth and telling herself that she could endure.

Jade's Support Aux: +1 Def to Dave!

Turn 3
Player Phase

The squad made a fighting retreat across the battlegrounds, moving away from the next powerful strike.

Kimiko's SHADOW Aura Sphere dealt 22 damage to Piedra!
Dave's Bite dealt 16 damage to Sierra! Flinch!
Astrid became less noticeable!
Astrid's Draining Kiss dealt 18 damage to Piedra! She recovered 13.
Astrid's STRONG Frost Breath dealt a CRITICAL 27 damage to Sierra!
Astrid's Spotter Feat! Sierra's Gear:

Lodestone
Tough Scarf
Bellatrix's Quick Attack dealt 6 damage to Sierra!
Bellatrix's U-Turn dealt 8 damage to Piedra!
Bellatrix's Spotter Feat! Piedra's Gear:

Cover Band
Earth Talisman

They'd certainly made it harder for the clan to maintain tactical control... and they'd used the opportunity to gather more intelligence on the Luxray's equipment. It would be a tough fight, but it was winnable yet.

Sierra pursued, her eyes laser-focused, her paws striking the ground thunderously.

...brace yourselves!

Sierra relocated to Dusty Approach, then to Tall Grass...
Boss Attack! Sierra's Supercell Slam dealt grazing damage!

Kimiko: 17!
Astrid: 17!
Dave: dodged!
Bellatrix: 27!
Sierra took 62 damage in fixed recoil!

The Luxray chieftain only growled under her breath as her wildly overextended attack made a glancing blow at best, and the spare energy sizzled unpleasantly in her fur as it discharged through her. Through Betel's network, the squad would have the impression that she'd done more injury to herself with that last attack than to any of them.

But the Escarpa adapted fast. There was no guarantee that she'd open herself up to that particular misfire a second time...
