Deadfan22 vs TruetoCheese
2 vs 2 double
Style: Set
DQ: A week
Damage Cap: 30%
Banned Moves: OHKO, 5 Chill/Pokémon, No Direct Healing
Arena: An Flooding City
Description: We are in a city that is being overtaken by water. Every 5 rounds, the water reaches the battlers and each has the option to pick up and move, only if it is agreed. Or they can wait 2 more rounds in which they will have to move to a different area to continue the battle.
All cities built below sea level, especially so close to the ocean, have to deal with the risk of potential flooding, and the city of An Flooding is no exception. With the characteristic arrogance of mankind, the city decided time and time again that massive walls and dams would suffice against the might of the ocean itself, and even named itself in defiance of the gods of the ocean’s wrath. And, indeed, the city has prospered over the past century, growing larger and more sprawling over the decades, while pumping money into maintaining the wall. But the walls are old and worn, and the safety inspectors underpaid and easily-bribed, so it was only a matter of time before the dam finally broke.
The normal response would be to get away from the city as fast as possible. Indeed, most native An Floodingians have fled by air or by car many hours ago. But Asberians, even the newest battlers, have never been the sanest of people, and two new trainers are braving the flood for a pokémon battle with the intent to stay only a few steps ahead of the water each time.
Not having determined the rate at which water is rising through the city—fortunately for the Asberians, on an incline—no one has bothered to figure out where in the city to actually start the battle, so with an odd conviction that the water will rise and trap them faster if the battle starts too high in the city, the referee stops at the first park it can find. It’s a small one on the corner of a residential block, with a swing set and plastic slides for children and bars and nets to climb on as its centrepiece. The ground around the play area consists of soft sand, and park benches are placed all around the sand pit. Discarded plastic buckets and shovels lay strewn across the sand, along with the remains of what might have once been an extensive sand castle, as well as a thin blue jacket left on a bench.
The rising waters are still a ways away, though the Asberians can see it creeping towards them. Fortunately, it’s too far for any pokémon to summon any sort of massive wave to overtake the park, which would feel too much like the flood reaching out to grasp the Asberians. Drumming its fingers on its own poké balls, each one holding a pokémon capable of flying or teleporting all participants to a safer location should water overtake them, the referee lays out the rules and calls for the trainers to do their thing.
Deadfan22 is up first, and it quickly plucks two poké balls from its belt, a cubchoo and wingull. The wingull swoops into the air upon release with a cry for food, but the cubchoo is more reserved. Choo takes a moment to look out at the encroaching water, then gives a hearty sniff. A large droplet of snot is sucked back into her nose, but it’s barely a second before it starts dripping again.
TruetoCheese grins and tosses his own two poké balls. Like Deadfan22, one is a water-type, this time a poliwag who looks out at the floodwaters with longing. The skorupi, though, would very much prefer to stay dry. She has little means of locomotion in water, and would find herself at a disadvantage even to the apparently-ill cubchoo. Like an old hand at battling, TruetoCheese spouts a couple of paragraphs of instruction at his pokémon, trusting them to remember everything he says. Deadfan22, meanwhile, doesn’t see the need, and its pokémon take comfort in its apparent confidence.
And the battle begins.

Round One
Bilberry offers Gully a confident grin and calls out a greeting. Gully returns with a wordless question, and Bilberry responds by showering Gully with compliments, with just a hint of awe in her voice, and a few subtle gasps in all the right places. His wings, the colour and shine of his feathers, his obvious comfort in the sky and water alike. They’re a perfect match—even her tail, she says, swishing the aforementioned appendage lazily through the air, is not unlike his feathers, and don’t they have the same method of keeping the water from hindering them, with the thin coating of oil that makes her skin and his feathers so beautiful?
Gully gives a shy little caw and coasts in a circle above Bilberry. So is that how she feels? He could hear this all day. He could look at her all day, even, and damn the rising waters. She’d probably look even more beautiful swimming, with him flying above or resting in the water alongside her, two water-types alone in the world. Well, Choo can swim, he’s sure, or just go away, and Madeline can drown for all he cares, but Bilberry? With him is where she belongs. And if she likes looking at him so much, then, well, he’ll give her more to look at, more angles to appreciate him from at once. He puts on a burst of speed that leaves behind three afterimages, each one a perfect little wingull drifting in the wind.
Madeline generates a stream of swirling lights that draws the eye into its mesmerising pattern and sends it flowing over Choo, filling Choo’s vision and mind with the beauty of the golden and multicoloured lights. The lights surround the cubchoo and flit around her like living things, fireflies or fairies or little spirits that just want to play, and for a moment, Choo wants to join them. But she remembers that she has something to do. With an apologetic smile at the fairies forming a dome around her, she wipes some snot onto her paws and holds her paws out in front of her. Wind rushes out from her paws, bringing flakes of frozen snot with it, tearing across the sand. Gully gives a warning cry, but the snow just rushes past Bilberry, perhaps because of the distracting fairies blotting the poliwag out from Choo’s sight. Madeline, though, has no such defence or luck, and the cold bites into her skin with the flakes and chunks of snot.
With Gully safely out of the way, Bilberry turns on Choo. She runs, swifter than one might think on her stubby little legs, and leaps. She lands stomach-first on Choo’s body, sending the cubchoo sprawling, though the poliwag has no arms with which she can simulate a hug. With a bit of effort, she rolls off and smiles down at the ice-type. Choo is left achy and pained, and though she manages to stand, it’s much slower than it otherwise might have been, and her movements more jerky.
Gully cheeps, a confused little whine that doesn’t betray the extent of his feelings. She’s supposed to be paying attention to him, him,
him. He hasn’t known his partner for very long, but he’s pretty sure Choo never expressed interest in girls
or poliwag before, and either way, Choo can’t be into Bilberry. They’re partners. Choo would never betray Gully like that. Maybe, Gully thinks, maybe Bilberry’s losing interest too quickly. She didn’t look all that impressed with his clones, after all. But he does know what she must love: water. And while he can’t make the flood come any faster, there is another source of water at his beck and call, and this time, the water’s fresh. He flies in a graceful pattern not unlike a dance, all the while watching Bilberry to see if she’s looking at him, and his clones mimic his movement like a contest appeal. The sky darkens as the clouds congregate above the battlers, and soon enough, fat droplets of rain splash into the sand.
Gully wasn’t thinking ahead, though, and the rain shreds his clones on impact. Madeline clacks her mandibles. She’s not a major fan of being
in rain, but with this, there’s no question of which wingull to target. She shoots another glittering beam of lights that dazzle and astound Gully, momentarily distracting him even from his disappointment and embarrassment.
Choo’s too busy blinking the lights out of her own eyes to pay much attention to anything, and her head feels light and cottony besides. She staggers a few steps, then plops onto her butt in the sand, surrounded by glittering fairies that shine like little angels. She reaches out at one of the lights, but she can’t seem to grasp one.
Her thoughts are interrupted by a heavy impact, and all the fairies and angels fly away to be replaced by more conventional stars. Bilberry struggles to roll off Choo and get back to her feet, smirking. Well, it
was quite rude to ignore her after that hug.
Gully just watches, though, his eyes taking in every detail, every nuance of her expression, all of the total lack of attention she’s paying him. He’d just wanted to chat, really, maybe show off a little and see her smile and laugh, but she’s just
ignoring him. And—and attacking his partner, which he reluctantly concedes isn’t acceptable if they’re going to be friends, let alone anything more. And even now, Bilberry is barely paying attention to him.
Well, clearly Bilberry just wants to fight. So he’ll give her a fight.
Gully summons all the strength he’s got into one might flap of his wings, and then another, and a third, the wind whipping up faster and stronger each time. By the second, he’s already got a powerful whirlwind, and by the fourth, it’s a massive hurricane whipping rain into everyone’s face and making the swings fly straight up, barely held back by the chains. Sand whips up into the air along with the wind, spitting grit into everyone’s eyes, but Gully doesn’t care. With a fifth flap, the hurricane goes roaring toward Bilberry. It effortlessly lifts her up into the air and buffets her with the sand and wood chips and bits of plastic. Bilberry’s scream is soundlessly torn from her throat by the force of the wind itself. Quickly spent, the hurricane vanishes into faint breezes and drops her back into the wet sand, where she lays, quivering.
Madeline can say without question that
she’s quite impressed—and a little scared. The winds effortlessly picking her partner up like that and tossing her around and then just dropping her like nothing happened… it’s a bit like a nightmare. And right now, she doesn’t intend to draw Gully’s attention. Instead, she scuttles across the sand and slams her head into Choo’s midsection. The air rushes out of Choo’s lungs with a startled
whuff, and the last of the fairies flees. But Choo is in no position to take advantage of her newly-cleared sight until she can catch her breath.
