Help? Spriting buildings

I've been asked to do some spriting for a site that hasn't been released, but I am very confident it will be because it wouldn't be the first from this creator. Anyways, he asked me to sprite some buildings for him (overworld). I don't even know where to begin! If someone could give me some basic pointers... Also, I won't just be making houses and stuff, he wants giant drills and conveyor belts and stuff. So does anybody know how to make overworlds, or know of a good tutorial for making them? All help is appreciated, I'd like to finish this before I start a big project with someone else on the 5th, but I don't know if that will happen.
