Light Yagami vs Whirlpool (ref: Negrek)

DQ: 4 days
Damage Cap: 30%

Arena: Great Deku Tree

Deep within the Kokiri forest lies the Great Deku tree. Iconic for centuries, the Deku tree is nearing the end of its life. Littered with spider webs and sapped by overgrown fungi, this mysterious atmosphere is simultaneously sacred and creepy. Bug types make good use of the environment, and as such bug-type attacks deal 1.2x the normal damage.

There are three floors in the Deku tree, each with one treasure chest. Initially, each Pokemon starts on the first floor. It takes one move to climb up to the next floor. Pokemon may jump down to a lower floor at any time without wasting a move, but in doing so take 1% damage, or 3% damage if jumping from the third floor to the first floor. They may also use a move to climb down a floor without taking any damage. A Pokemon cannot be hit by a physical attack if the attacker is not currently on the same floor. Rock climb or fly may be used to get from the first floor to the third floor in one move.

A treasure chest takes one move to open, and will contain one of these three items:
-Rupees. The trainer will obtain an extra 3 dollars at the end of the match.
-Deku nut. Takes one move to throw at the opponent. The opponent will flinch for 3 moves.
-Deku shield. All attacks against the holder will deal 1-2% (randomized) less damage. Burns up if the holder is hit by a fire-type attack. Can be picked up by the opponent when the holder faints, or stolen with thief. Does not count as a normal hold item.

Firelily's up, who has Flamelight.

Well! Let's set up this round, then go for our strategy the next, shall we? Flame Charge first, then Flame Wheel and another Flame Charge. If you can't hit her for whatever reason, Harden is pretty much the only useful move. If you're Taunted and you can't hit her, go ahead and Flame Burst the tree in your anger! At the very least that'll save some energy.

Okay, lets Climb 2 levels and Open a Treasure Chest.

Climb ~ Climb ~ Open

Deep in the heart of an ancient forest stands the Great Deku Tree, a plant unparalleled in wisdom and power. Its vast canopy casts the clearing where it stands in perpetual twilight, and the air is heavy with the smell of leaf-rot and shot through with bright specks of insect noise. The great tree is long past its prime, however, and today it is utterly still, the unsettling humanoid face in its trunk making no attempt to communicate with the trainers clambering up its craggy trunk. The tree still holds a few treasures wedged in between its boughs, though the platforms that support them are splintered and warped with age.

The two trainers who have decided to make the tree their battlefield today convene on the lowest of these, making nervous small talk as they wait for their referee to arrive. Although Light Yagami has every reason to be nervous, this being his first battle, even Whirlpool, a relatively well-established trainer, is made uneasy by the hushed gravity of this place.

At last the ref appears, her aerodactyl breaking through the canopy and alighting in one of the Great Deku Tree's upper branches. She seems content to stay up there, presumably out of harm's way, as she calls for the battle to begin. The trainers, having had plenty of time to mull over their pokémon choices, are quick to release their fighters. Smirk the sneasel takes shape on Light Yagami's side of the field, wearing an expression appropriate to her name as she looks forward to her first battle. It falters a little when her opponent is released, however; Firelily the larvesta has an aura of quiet confidence about her, and the flames spitting from her horns do as much to make her icy opponent queasy as they do to drive away the dimness of the arena. The two pokémon have little time to size one another up, though; another shout from above sets the battle in motion without delay.

Rather than attacking, Smirk turns aside from her opponent, popping out her claws and punching them into the side of the Great Deku Tree. She scrambles nimbly up the side of the tree, aiming for the next platform up. Firelily watches her go with some irritation, but there's not much she can do about the sneasel's retreat for now. She'll stay where she is and buff up, then, to prepare for an opportunity where Smirk is feeling less like a coward and the larvesta has a chance to attack. Waves of energy pass over the bug's carapace, causing it to glint metallically for a few moments as it is reinforced.

Above, Smirk reaches the level of the second platform and keeps right on climbing, aiming for the highest of the levels and the treasure chest it holds. Below, Firelily has no real choice but to keep on hardening up as Smirk pulls herself onto the highest platform. The sneasel takes a moment to peer out over the edge of the platform, not bothered in the slightest by the dizzying drop to the earth below. Then she ambles over to the chest, slices through the cobwebs draping its age-darkened wood, and pries it open.

The outside of the chest might not look like much, but the gems inside gleam as brightly as ever, and Smirk's eyes widen as she looks over the bounty. Then she grins to herself, hauls the chest over the platform, and dumps its contents out over her trainer below. Light Yagami ducks and covers his head with his hands as Rupees bounce down all around him, a few zinging off into empty space but a handsome sum remaining for him to gather up. Fireliliy, now downright armored, watches the display with disdain.

Smirk leans out over the edge of the platform, having a gander at her opponent far below. The larvesta isn't difficult to spot, her flame-spitting horns alight. Nevertheless, it's a long way from Smirk to her, and the sneasel doesn't have a lot of experience in precision vomiting. The sneasel muses on her shot, burping occasionally as gases evolve from the toxic chemicals reacting in her stomach.

When she spits a stream of foul goop down at Firelily, though, she does manage to hit somehow. Firelily hisses with rage as toxins splatter her reinforced carapace and begin to eat their way through. It could be much worse, though--a fairly small amount of toxic actually hit the larvesta, and with her strengthened carapace, much of its potency was spent simply reaching her bloodstream. The revenge Firelily has in mind will easily repay Smirk tenfold--if she manages to pull it off.

The larvesta sights up the sheer truck rising over her, picking a likely spot to start her conflagration. She has no hope of actually reaching Smirk where she perches on the third platform, but if she's lucky the fire she sets will do its own climbing. Firelily spits a pellet of glowing coals at the tree above, and when it strikes it explodes with a small thump, sending small tendrils of flame spreading in all directions. Firelily waits hopefully for the fire to catch and the conflagration to take shape, but she waits in vain. The tough outer bark of the Great Deku Tree is highly inflammable and mossy-damp besides; it would take a much more powerful fire attack than flame burst to set it to smouldering.

Smirk watches this unfold with apprehension, unsure of what her opponent is up to. When the smoke from the flame burst clears and nothing significant has happened, though, she is emboldened to leave her safe perch. The accomplished tree-climber is perfectly comfortable hooking one claw onto the edge of her platform, then swinging out over empty space and dropping lightly to the one below. Here, too, there is a waiting treasure chest, and Smirk's claws are well-suited to prying up its heavy lid. She peers into the chest's musty interior, eagerly anticipating more glowing swag, but this chest's prize is a little less impressive. It's just a nut, quite large but otherwise as unimpressive as treasure comes. Smirk picks it up, turns it over in her paws, and tries shaking it to see if maybe the gems are hidden inside. In the end, all she can do is decide to hang onto it on the off-chance that it might be useful later--and fume over the uncouthness of whoever decided to stock the treasure chest with some random piece of tree.

Firelily, meanwhile, is hoping to make up for the failure of her flame burst with a far more powerful show of firepower. The flames on her horns roar higher, burning almost a foot out from her body as she prepares for a truly gargantuan fire attack. The flames from her horns stretch inwards as well as outward, joining in front of her face to make a five-pointed star of flame that Firelily sends sailing up at Smirk. The sneasel is still far overhead, though; the slow-moving fire blast has lost most of its bite by the time it actually reaches the second platform. Smirk jumps back as the the attack strikes, sizzling menacingly and singeing her with a blast of heat. The sneasel is more startled than hurt, though, and the fire blast doesn't retain enough power to set the old, damp boards alight. There's nothing to stop Smirk from getting her revenge with a powerful attack of her own--nothing at all, that is, save the fact that there doesn't seem to be any water around here for her to call on. The forest is fairly humid, but you can't really spin a tidal wave out of that. Smirk raises her paws experimentally, trying to sense a nearby water source to bend to her will, but is ultimately forced to abandon her surf attack when she discovers none.

By now, Firefly is livid. It seems her opponent is quite out of her reach for now, and the Great Deku Tree remains stubbornly fire-resistant. She can be reasonably sure that her substitute won't fail, at least, but it's little good if she can't actually get some damage in on her opponent. Once more her horns are burning high, the flames twisting and dancing in the hot wind of Firelily's anger. She spits a ball of fire to the platform in front of her and, nursing it with her life energy, entices it to grow into the shape of another larvesta, looking insubstantial as a will-o'-the-wisp but possessing an indefatigable urge to defend its master.

Terrain Notes
The chest on the top platform has been emptied of rupees, and the one on the second platform, which contained a Deku nut, has also been ransacked.

Final Notes
- A rare case of me legitimately forgetting about a battle! Sorry about that.
- Firelily avoided the worst of the toxic and is only "regularly" poisoned.
- Flame burst is too weak to start a fire on something as fire-resistant as a treetrunk, and the fire blast had lost almost all its power by the time it reached Smirk (hence also the negligible damage it dealt).
- There is no water nearby to use for a surf attack.

But the treetrunk's dying-with-other-burnable-things!

We can still win with regular firepower (no pun intended) and defense, though! Neither of you have effective special attacks that'll reach very far, so let's just wait for them and Harden all the while (if by chance you're Taunted, Flame Charge the tree for speed). Once Smirk's on your platform, though, Flamethrower spam! If it's the last action and you haven't done anything but Harden, though, just climb up.

Rain Dance. If you can manage to summon enough condensation to form a cloud inside the tree, and it looks like it's pouring down pretty hard, use that extra bit of energy to draw together as much water as you can and Surf. Otherwise, try and get some damage on it with Dark Pulse. Finally, give 'em your best grin and use Psych Up.

If there's no water to be had, Smirk decides she'll just have to make some. The sneasel starts to dance, a complicated, energetic number that involves a great deal of jumping and swaying. By some arcane means, the dark type's supplication via interpretive dance elicits a response from the heavens, and the shade beneath the Great Deku Tree's leaves grows deeper as clouds crowd the sky overhead. As Smirk comes to a halt, the first raindrops are pattering into the canopy, though it's not until the rain has worked up to a downpour that any significant amount of it manages to trickle through the dense foliage and spatter to the platform where the sneasel stands. It takes even longer to reach Firelily far below; the larvesta has already reinforced her carapace with another chitinous layer by the time the first few droplets fall. As soon as raindrops start to patter down around her, though, she is quick to retreat underneath the first platform, hissing irritably to herself, and her substitute is quick to follow.

Although the rainfall is better than nothing, there's no way Smirk can hope to wring a tidal wave from it. She steps up to the edge of her platform, hooking her claws onto its edge and leaning far out as she tries to spot her opponent. If it weren't for Firelily's ever-glowing horns, the sneasel might have missed her, but the flickering light showing from beneath the first platform is enough to place the larvesta. There's no hope of hitting her now, and Smirk waits impatiently while, below, Firelily further reinforces her carapace, ignorant of her opponent's intentions. When she emerges from below the platform, reluctantly braving the rain as she begins her climb, it is to meet a scything bolt of dark energy from high above.

Larvesta's substitute rushes from beneath the platform to intercept the dark pulse, which is weakened by distance but still powerful enough to blow a hole in the construct's fiery body. Firelily lets out another series of rapid-fire, irritated clicks, then sets hooked claws to bark and starts to climb, moving surprisingly fast up the side of the Great Deku Tree. For a moment Smirk is worried the larvesta might be headed her way, and indeed might even be able to reach her, but the bug turns aside at the first platform, her substitute following doggedly despite the damage it's taken. The larvesta huddle close in to the tree's trunk in the shadow of the second platform, determined to avoid as much of the rain as possible. Smirk, meanwhile, relaxes and sits back, closing her eyes and letting her paws lie limp in her lap as she makes an effort at calling forth her weak psychic powers. She projects her consciousness onto Firelily's, which she can see burning below in her mind's eye, and for a moment is overwhelmed with discomfort and irritation as she taps into the bug's distaste for the rain. More to her benefit, however, she also picks up the physiological chances the larvesta's been working at, a wall of psychic force sliding out over her skin to protect her as surely as Firelily's reinforced carapace.

Yay! Thanks, neg.

Ok, this should be pretty straight forward. Go for a round of Swords Dances, but first watch to see what your opponent does. If at any time Firelily jumps down, make a beeline for the last treasure chest. In fact, position yourself above it while you are waiting for Firelily to make its move.

Swords Dance / Jump Down and Open x3

If we were in an open clearing and had heavy rain, would you have allowed surf to be used the move after rain dance? Still kinda figuring out how stuff works around here...

Thanks to those handy Hardens, that boost will be now equivalent to +1 Attack; with the Sub up, she won't be able to do much. Calm Mind up, then Bug Buzz until you're hoarse.

As the downpour continues, Firelily is glad of any excuse to remain under cover. The larvesta hunkers down and closes her eyes, performing a set of mental exercises intended to calm herself down and restore her focus. The flames jetting from her horns burn higher as her inner flame intensifies; she's ready to get revenge for that rain dance.

Above, Smirk is engaged in a similar exercise, albeit a more active one. The sneasel looks to boost her fighting prowess a different way, by performing a ritual dance intended to limber her up and enhance her physical capabilities. The sneasel jumps and spins, interspersing her more dramatic moves with rhythmic clashes of her claws and intricate footwork. She is perfectly content moving to a beat only she can hear until a high-pitched whine cuts through her concentration, and she stumbles to a halt.

No question as to what might be causing the racket. Smirk stalks up to the edge of the platform and leans out over the edge, looking to see whether she can spot Firelily below. The larvesta is still under cover, though, and Smirk can make out no more than the light of her flames.

The sneasel drums her claws against the edge of the platform in irritation, then straightens up and goes back to what she had been doing before she was so rudely interrupted. It isn't long before she's worked her dance up to a fever pitch, with a daring series of backflips and abrupt changes in direction. Once again she's thrown off by a loud bug buzz from below, but manages to land her last jump gracefully enough. The sneasel is practically glowing with energy, her confidence and battle spirit riding high, and Firelily's apparent lack of appreciation for her dancing hardly troubles her at all. With all the distance between them, the bug buzzes were fainter than usual to begin with, and Smirk takes it as a positive sign that her opponent has been reduced to slinging attacks from the shadows. She feels ready to take on the world, and one larvesta is hardly going to stand in her way.

Feeling comfortable away from the continuing rain, Firelily is ready to unleash another Bug Buzz. Another voice beats her to the punch however, and she peers up at the platform above to listen to Smirk’s rant. Another one of those? That’s all you’ve done this whole time! You’re so predictable, it’s pathetic. Just what I expected from a bug. Firelily knows that isn’t true, of course, but the Sneasel’s insidious suggestions worm their way into her brain, and she can’t help but wonder if there’s some validity there. Clicking to herself, she just stares out at the rain, thinking about how to best surprise the enemy.

Smirk rubs her paws together in anticipation, ready to dish out some punishment. Except … her foe’s not exactly close by, is she? Firelily’s beneath the platform she’s standing on, of course, but how is she supposed to hit that Larvesta from way up here? With a scowl she peers at the firelight faintly illuminating the floor, wishing she was actually close enough to strike.

Another whine distracts her from her brooding, and she rubs her head in protest; the Bug Buzz might be a familiar noise to her by now, but it’s no more welcome than before. Below, Firelily shifts a bit, feeling a bit of triumph in catching Smirk off guard. Predictable, am I?

Smirk’s irritation grows; she’s supposed to make that bug feel some real pain, but she’s still far out of reach. With a huff she drums her claws against the platform, listening to Firelily’s calm breathing as the Larvesta lets herself drift into a restful trance. Soon, she assures herself, and the rainfall gives way to mild weather again when the round draws to a close.
