Apparently, ASB has an unwritten rule stating that non-insane arenas are completely forbidden. There can be no other reason why, just weeks after being chucked into an active volcano, Mike is being sent to oversee a Metronome battle on a giant rowboat a metaphorical stone's throw from the South Pole. Where, for the purposes of this reffing, it is still immensely cold. The two trainers greet the referee, and rather than wonder how the heck they got here, they begin the battle. the trainers agonise over what to send out before eventually settling on the only Pokémon they each have that has access to Metronome. Mawile sends out a Togepi, and sreservoir selects a Cleffa. The two Pokémon stand on the deck of the immense rowboat, shivering and wondering whose bright idea this was exactly, while the referee walks over to one of the Dialga-length oars and calls a start to the first round.

Shivering, the two baby Pokémon get to work summoning random, preferably impossible attacks. Lyra the Togepi is first to move, raising her tiny arms and waving them to and fro in time to a rhythm in her head. After a few seconds of arm-shaking, Lyra feels on odd glow near her rear end; looking around, she sees a long "tail" of grey, Steel-type energy has formed projecting from the base of her shell. Rushing towards her opponent with her new energy tail dragging along the floor behind her, she leaps and swings her rear towards Star; the "tail" slams into Star and knocks her flying, sending the fairy slamming headfirst into the side of the rowboat. Angrily, Star picks herself up and begins to wiggle her arms to her own tune; as she does, her body picks up a yellowy-green glow, and she hears a faint buzzing noise in her head, and the sweet scent of nectar in her nostrils. When she finishes and lowers her arms, she feels different, almost like she's a different creature than before.
Lyra sniggers at her opponent's apparent failure to come up with a useful move, and again begins to wag her arms from side to side; when the tune in her head ends, the rowboat glows bright with psychic energy, and the two Pokémon suddenly feel much, much heavier. Lyra finds she can barely lift her feet from the ground, and her shell has become monstrously weighty. Despite her arms feeling like lead, Star manages to wrestle them into an upright position and begin swinging them, taking care not to tilt them too far and go rolling head over heels. As the tune plays in her mind, she foresees her opponent's movements over the next few actions, and notices a moment two actions from now when Lyra's guard will be down. She fires off a blast of psychic power at that precise space and time, ready to strike her oppoment unawares when she least expects it.
To the observers, it seems as though Star still hasn't pulled out any useful attacks. sreservoir begins to grow slightly indignant, while Lyra is overjoyed; this battle will be over in no time, and then she and her trainer can leave and go somewhere that isn't absolutely freezing. A third arm-wiggle and she begins to sink into the ground, forming a puddle of blackness that quickly snakes its way across the floor of the boat and rises up behind Star. As soon as Lyra's body reforms she springs forward and deals a sucker punch to the Cleffa's skull. Star yelps as she is knocked to the ground, taking a few seconds to register what happened and struggle to her feet. Wait, wasn't that a Ghost move...? How'd that hit her? She's a Normal type! ...right? Shrugging it off, Star starts up her third and final arm-jiggle of the round, a rather aggressive tune playing in her mind as she does so, and quite involuntarily she opens her mouth and utters a deep, threatening snarl. Lyra is taken aback; she never thought such a harmless Pokémon could produce such a frightening noise. Somewhat intimidated, she decides it may not be wise to mess with star too much after all...
