Sunward Sun's Rest Mystery Dungeon

[Ch08 Finale] ~ VS the Living Sun New

In endless night, a prayer for dawn.
Take heart; the Sun answers.

First, there was light. Honey-gold and rust-red, an infinity of it, enough to burn the eyes. The sun was overhead, too bright to look at directly. Beyond that— the mesa-top again, now far brighter and with no ground below, with only dazzling clouds reaching out into the horizon on every side. Through the Rift-Breacher portal, the Wayfarers had seemingly stepped directly into the heart of the dungeon, which clearly resembled the true plateau, out in realspace. This was a close replica, though without the stairway down, and older, less eroded by the wind of centuries. The Covenant personnel who had entered ahead of them were... incapacitated. Some lay prostrate, others covered their eyes and rocked slowly in place, others seemed unconscious...

The moment a Wayfarer took a few steps from the entryway, the light burned harder, and the Sun itself unfolded her wings...

there must always be a dawn

to banish the darkness

...

What was that?

Have courage, heroic spirits. I am yet with you still. It seems the Living Sun is emerging from a previously stable state of dream-like repose. You may well have to battle her in order to prevent her fully emerging into the world...

...otherwise, the light of her unfettered Radiance may bring ruin to it.

Good luck, Wayfarers.

The Living Sun wants to battle!

Living Sun's Brilliance! The dungeon became lit up by Radiant Sky! The Sun got +4 Mag/Res, but lost -4 Acc/Eva! The Sun has unlimited Radiance!

Wayfarers
VS
The Living Sun
[ ] Main Objective: Defeat the Sun.

There is a critical level of Radiance inside the dungeon's heart. It may be more dangerous than usual to accumulate Radiance here.

[ ] Additional Objective: Don't become Dazzled.

The Living Sun was once a Volcarona. Is it possible that she is, somehow, still alive? Perhaps it is possible to communicate with her.

[ ] Optional Objective: Get through to Amida

"...Hm. Okay. We will need to find a way to get to her. But first... we should probably try to weaken her before we try to get through."

Mhynt shifted her weight.

"Owen, get ready. This one might... be painful."

Why did it have to be the sun?

She vanished, leaving her shadow behind...

Betel, what can we do to get through to her? I imagine calling out to her might help... Would a Radiant presence or Shadow presence do more? Radiant may plunge it into a deeper madness. But Shadows may anger it. Of course, we can experiment, but...

A nearby solar flare caught her attention as she lobbed a wad of enervating poison toward the Volcarona-like entity.

I'd rather take as few chances as I can here.

Nova took in this Living Sun for everything she was worth. Positively blinding. Positively sweltering. Filling the air with a thrum that had his cheek bolts practically rattling in their sockets.

Of course, it at least took the liberty of disposing of the idiot brigade. And, for that, Nova bowed his head as thanks.

His thoughts were similar to Mhynt's. Summoning his Guardian could risk setting Surekhi off in such a state. But he hadn't gotten to this point by playing things safe.

And maybe there was a way to get through to her. A very... old-fashioned way: an appeal to the nature the two shared as pokémon. But Nova was nothing if not old. So, once the Guardian was summoned... and Nova had taken a breath to push those shadows down and make the Guardian seem less, uhh, shadowy... he and the Guardian bowed their heads in unison. Then they looked up to the Sun in tandem.

"Let's have us a good battle, then!" he said, squaring up his stance. "Don't hold back now!"

Out of all the situations he’d gotten himself into, this was certainly one of them. No big deal, all they had to do was fight The Sun. Blinding Radiance, the only light in the world. No. It killed The Sun. It became The Sun. He wasn’t going to think about that.

Archie grit his teeth, and took in his surroundings. The Volcarona was a ways into the sky, which meant he was going to have a hell of a time actually reaching her. As a dedicated physical combatant, this might prove an issue… Actually, he’d thrown himself around plenty of battlefields using water jets. Was there any reason he couldn’t go straight up?

“I’m definitely going to regret this,” he muttered to himself.

The Dewott summoned up what reserves of water he could muster, as much as the arid surroundings and blazing sunlight would allow. It erupted out of the ground beneath him, launching him skywards, directly towards the blinding radiance. Swatted aside like a bothersome insect, not even worth killing. The Dewott swung blindly with both scalchops, then fell back towards the ground.

They were too late. The Coven grunts had already awoken Amida. Which also, apparently, meant it was too late for them. Leaf made a valiant effort to avoid trampling the shiny suits currently flat out on the stone, where "valiant effort" meant vaguely kind of remembering to move around them and maybe not actually being that bothered if she accidentally trod on a paw or two, what do you want, it was hard to pay attention when you couldn't tear your gaze away from the living star in the sky.

The Living Sun. In this state, still probably nothing on what Nova and the others had seen at the Caldera, but even when she wasn't literally replacing the literal sun it was hard to even focus on her, with all the waves of radiance rippling through the air.

This isn't safe. At least those idiots won't be complicating things, but there's... so much of this light...

But nothing. They were already here. There was nowhere else to go, nothing else to do but face this head on. You said you were going to help me. You're the one who always says to focus, so quit whining and help me focus. We need to know what to do.

"Amida! Can you hear me? There's no darkness to banish here!"

She broke into a run, vaulted into the air, and stared directly into the sun.

The pokémon aloft in the heart of the dungeon was something like a

volcarona

—it had the general appearance of one, albeit with an abdomen of regal mauve, wild fur around the torso, and jagged horns like antlers to crown the head. Perhaps, in her mortal life, this 'mon had been a

lady of the wild

—one of those strange half-feral alphas that were so rare in modern times.

And then, of course, there were the dawn-golden wings and the matchless

radiance

—they emitted. So like the sun.

i am the sun

Mhynt's Umbral Specter let Owen join the fight!
Mhynt's Blast Seed dealt 40 damage to The Sun!
Mhynt used Toxic on The Sun! Badly Poisoned!
Archie's AGILE Night Slashes dealt 29+41 damage to Living Sun!
Archie's Slash dealt a CRITICAL 52 damage to Living Sun!
Archie's Razor Shell dealt a CRITICAL 56 damage to Living Sun! It's super effective!

Divine and ethereal though she may have been, the Living Sun had a physical body, and a pokémon's aura. It was possible to attack her, and to deal damage... If she'd never been defeated, had there ever been a chance for her to release the built-up Radiance she'd accumulated? Instead, she'd cocooned herself in this dungeon...

i set and rise

At least, until now. It seemed interference with the dungeon had disturbed her millennia-long rest...

Leaf's Quick Attacks dealt 10+13 damage to Living Sun!
Leaf's Zen Headbutt dealt a CRITICAL 36 damage to Living Sun!
Leaf's Vigilance acquired 👁️ Combat Intel: Living Sun's behaviour:

The Living Sun does not appear to be fully conscious, at least in her current state. Yet she is certain to attack in kind, capable of battle even while sub-sapient. Such attacks are unlikely to be wielded with particular precision, however.

i bring the dawn

bright enough to warm all the earth

Furthermore, the Living Sun has maintained her accumulation of Radiance apparently indefinitely, and continues to do so. Perhaps it is this single-minded perseverence in the task of lighting a dark planet that has prevented her from simply disintegrating.

i have to save them

Thirdly,

the light is my voice

and you cannot avoid hearing faint impressions of meaning so long as you perceive it. Not even the thin shields that are your eyelids will keep out the dawn. You want to call out to it. You want to feel the warmth on your skin. You want to help...

Nova's Umbral Guardian and Follow Me are defending the party!
Nova's Interact: "Let's have us a good battle, then! Don't hold back now!"
"Amida! Can you hear me? There's no darkness to banish here!"

The golden Volcarona spread her wings wide, and burned with Radiant fire. A crackling roar like a great bonfire could be heard even from the solid ground below.

The Sun could not possibly hold back.

no more shadows

the
darkness will end

"Did something get through to her there?" Mhynt murmured to herself. No. It was hard to tell, at least not yet. If they weakened her a little more, maybe that would be a different story...

Let's get her energy down first! Owen suggested.

Mhynt nodded. She readied her blade and jumped to The Sun. Owen mirrored it, wincing at the great radiance before him, but powered through regardless.

The sun was back. It was time to dim this one's lights... enough for her to see again.

The light's intensity continued unabated. Nova was forced to look toward the ground. Something was definitely buzzing in his head... and he hadn't channeled any radiance. And probably couldn't, at this rate. It was like the polar opposite of Alexander. He firmly expected just being around this sky was going to drive up the corruption. It was only a matter of time.

"You're wrong!" he said. "Light's been restored for a while now! And we need shadows, too. Everything needs balance!"

He took a step back, catching Archie in the corner of his eye. Stars, he'd gone into this dungeon? This whole thing was probably a reminder of that necrozma stuff to him.

"Don't lose heart." Nova nudged his side. "This is... a friendly battle, okay? We'll show our hearts to her to wake her up."

He bounded down toward the bordering ledges.

Well, at least staring into this sun hadn't totally blinded her. Only almost. It was all Leaf could do to shake the searing white afterimages from her vision as she dropped back to the mesa, made harder by the voice (?) that carried from nowhere and everywhere.

(Was that really so bad, though? There was nothing to be afraid of. Maybe the world still needed just a little sunlight what with all these dark, troubled times.)

Leaf slammed her hooves into the ground, let the shock of the impact run through her to clear her head. Then again, harder, to spring back into the air. "The eruption is over, Amida! You did restore the light, and you kept Forlas safe until the clouds were gone!" There had to be a way to get through to her somehow...

(Had to be a way to get out of the light. Was it getting brighter?)

He’d connected, he was sure of that, if nothing else. Had the Volcarona even felt it? Could it feel anything? Did it even realize they were here? Did his actions even matter? Did he?

Archie sidestepped a gust of glittering silver wind, that The Sun had fired blindly at them. She seemed to be on some kind of autopilot, repeating a mantra even as she questioned it. Every word hummed with Radiance, making the Shadow bubbling within him recoil with every word. Even with his eyes closed, he couldn’t escape the piercing light. How could the others tolerate this? Was he the only one so weak?

Enough.

He had to focus. The others were in motion, the Volcarona was up to something, he couldn’t just stand here. He couldn’t be a liability now, after everything. He’d chosen to come here, now he needed to deal with the consequences.

He called the water back to him, to take another geyser ride up. He could already feel it, the ice freezing his veins, the cloying feeling deep in his stomach. What was the saying, the brightest light cast the deepest shadows? He just had to keep it together.

The Dewott launched himself skywards again, his scalchops brimming with Dark energy. Two strikes in quick succession, and then the Shadow came out. He hadn’t... Intended it to, was surprised he could even call it forth this close to The Sun, with how blinding the sky was. He brought down his scalchops, hard, let gravity drag them down the Volcarona as it pulled him back to the ground. He hoped that it hurt.

… Why?

Because she got to be the hero? Because she had been able to do something to make up for her mistake? Because her world didn’t have to die? Because she’d made the ultimate sacrifice, and he just kept on surviving? Arceus, had he always been this pathetic?

Nova said:
"Don't lose heart."

“Huh?” He felt someone nudging him, and looked over to find Nova. Nova also made the sacrifice. He really was surrounded by ghosts.

His Dead Friend Nova said:
"This is... a friendly battle, okay? We'll show our hearts to her to wake her up."

“Y-yeah!” The Dewott forced a smile, and then ran after the Graydian, into the safety of the shade.

What even was in his heart?

"The eruption is over, Amida! You did restore the light, and you kept Forlas safe until the clouds were gone!"

This was true. It was the ancient history of the world, commemorated by those cultures that preserved the story.

The story of the Living Sun who had the compassion and strength of will to burn in the sky for them.

The story of Surekhi, Lady Volcarona of the Wilds.

The telepathic voice of Betelgeuse cut in, filled with alarm.

You are too fragile, Archie! There is no way you can stand up to special attacks as strong as that unless you have enough Radiance of your own to resist their effectiveness!

(Fortunately, it seems her physical attacks will not be nearly as powerful.)

It seems as if she might have become aware that she is in combat. Perhaps your words can get through to her even now?

"We're here!" Nova shouted, bounding back up to the flats "Amida, please! You've done your job! You can rest now! You have to rest!" He took a breath. "Remember Lorell? Too much of the light brings calamity!"

While he spoke, his Guardian squared up its stance. This constant fleeing back into the sky was getting them nowhere. And it had to be getting her more hopped up on the radiance already percolating the sky. So, its course was clear: it had to try and drag Surekhi down to their level.

Too weak.

You are too fragile, Archie!

Even after all this time, he was still too weak. A liability. Unable to make a difference.

The Dewott pushed himself to his feet, the battlefield resolving into focus again. This wasn’t a fight he was going to be able to win. Maybe the best he could hope for would be to hold out as long as possible, so that the others could finish the job once he was spent. It was his only option, really. He couldn’t run. He wouldn’t run. Not again.

“I’ll keep trying to wear her down,” Archie said, “Maybe then you’ll be able to get through to her.”

And so, he launched himself into the fray yet again. They had to win this fight, there was no other option. And that meant he had to push himself, to the very limit of his endurance. To win, to save the world, or die trying.

"She's still too strong... Try to call out to her! I'll get past her shields!" Mhynt shouted. But then, she realized something else she could do here.

Another shield? Really?

"Can't blame them when dealing with a swarm," Mhynt said. "Unfortunately... we have an expert."

Mhynt vanished. Owen's shadow followed as a trail of smoke. In moments, they were in the sky again, and Mhynt pressed her claws against the Radiant shield. It burned, but she pressed through as Owen landed on the other side, his hand morphing into a mirror of Mhynt's Leaf Blade.

"I'll be polite," Mhynt said, tapping her claws against the barrier. "I made sure--to knock first!"

She tried to press against the shield with her enervating aura, rotting it away and puncturing holes in its great protections. Then, she thrust her blade forward and fell back with Owen, landing on the ground.

"Just hold fast," Mhynt said, her claws against a tether that connected her to Owen. Usually invisible, she planned to use it to draw him in at the last moment. Sure, she'd have to spool him back into being later... but as a diversion? Owen was perfect.

As everyone else advanced, Owen remained behind, his shoulders and wings sagging with brief terror as the sun's full force appeared to face him.

The sky went white. The shade went white. It felt like the air above them was boiling, and even if she'd avoided being boiled herself Leaf could still feel the heat and light rising, rising, rising.

She forced the sudden swooping of teleportation out of her mind and focused on attacking. Aim, strike, follow through. Hope the momentum would bring her back down to earth.

where are you?

"We don't know, but... but he's out there! We can try to help you find him!" Find him before the people who shouldn't find him. Find him before... well, wasn't much telling what next if Powehi got to Lorrel. (And it wasn't like they could keep him secret from Dark Matter for long, if they did find him, so whatever was gonna happen there was gonna happen, one way or another.) But Amida was his friend. She, if no one else, deserved to know.

"We can help you, but first you have to stop!"

"We don't know, but... but he's out there! We can try to help you find him! We can help you, but first you have to stop!"

"We're here! Amida, please! You've done your job! You can rest now! You have to rest! Remember Lorell? Too much of the light brings calamity!"

The sun-moth stared at Nova, her eyes of liquid sunlight betraying nothing of the mind inside, or what was left of it.

...Amida...

The Volcarona blinked. And then, in a voice that hadn't spoken for five thousand years, a voice as powerful and reverberating as an eruption, she spoke.

"Amida... I am her. I am... light."

"...Who...
are you...?"

Amida remembered her name!
Amida's Magic fell harshly! -2!

Turn 3
Enemy Phase
Mhynt's Interact:

Another supernova of light poured forth from Amida's body, and Owen winked out of existence before the attack could reach him. The ambient Radiance of the dungeon-heart spiralled endlessly around, but the solar flare still had yet to burn the Wayfarers, for now...

The dungeon seemed to melt around them, details fading as the solar light bleached them out of existence. The slumber of the Living Sun had ended, and Volcarona Amida had awoken.

Amida will emerge into realspace next turn!
The party gained 10 Radiance.
Archie, Nova, and Leaf became Radiant-type and were unharmed by the Radiant Sky.
