Lethe

Stupid, stupid, he'd been too reckless, spent too much energy too soon- Koa's head pounded and his vision flickered, darkness pulsing around the edges. Even the Reviver Seed's only did so much. Evolution, endless training. Sparring, seeking knowledge. It had to be enough, he had to be enoughit's not. What more was there? A strange sound rang in his ears, and he hastily downed a drink.
K̷͕͘ȍ̸̹a̶̻̽m̷͙̕ȧ̷̰r̸̗̔ü̸̪ ̸̩̾Ş̷̍
Strength returned to his trembling limbs but the noise didn't fade, and he realized it wasn't a sound. Not one in his ears at least. It was if it were in his soul. A force, like gravity pulling the wrong way. Calling to him. His vision pulsed with a heartbeat as Powehi became more. The call rang louder and something else flared in his minds eye Red. Ink-shadow. A spectre.

Focus. The team needs you. Koa steeled himself. Fuel your fists.

Anubis radiant flames blazed against the dark as Koa rose once more. Decisive, determined and precise, layering his strikes and driving into the weak points, falling back on all his time training back home and here.

And still, he heard that call...

When the effect faded, his body had changed. Swept-back aura sensors, a lithe black tail, a cape of grey fur, a mask of skull-grey patterns around his eyes. A variant Mega-Lucario, an ancient form sacred to a civilisation long-extinct.
"Oh shit," said Andre. "He's... doing something."

"We can see that," said Ben.

It was like one of those Mystery Dungeon tricks of the eye, when an impossible space gave way to mundane reality, an illusion breaking. There had been one avatar of Dark Matter standing there just now, but now there were three. They stepped apart from each other in loose unison, identical in appearance.
Oh, I see... Unfortunately this may be unavoidable. But listen... I sense that the damage will be worst near Powehi, and may be weaker the further away one gets. Please, heroic spirits, do your best to mitigate this attack.
"Things just keep getting better and better," Andre said sarcastically. I guess I can still fire some Bullet Seeds from afar.

He galloped away and began firing seeds at one of the false-Powehis. Ben, however, had nothing he could do from a distance, so the ursa simply fell back and crouched down low to better weather whatever was coming.

In between his volleys, Andre could notice the other Wayfarers around them seeming so... confident in their actions. So determined. Why didn't he have that drive? Why was he always lagging behind? Didn't he think this was important?

I need to push myself harder, he thought. I don't even know what to do, but... there's got to be something. Something to make me not be such dead weight...

Dave hadn't been banking on these creepy-ass visions. Jean shivered as Ting-Lu went down, sickening images of human (Pokémon) sacrifice rushing through their minds.

"Jean? You with me?"

She nodded, silent, but didn't look him in the eye.

"If you want to go home, maybe Powehi will--"

"No!" she said. "No, I can't... I can't go home." She shook her head. "Last time I went home, Will never came back."

Fuck. If that didn't tear his absolute fucking heart out. "Jean, that wasn't your fault, all right. You never could've--"

"But now I can," she said, quiet. "I'm a Pokémon now. So I can help."

She got back up to her feet, standing proud with her tails streaming behind her. "Let's... let's torch him. We can do it together."

There was a weird lump in Dave's throat. "Okay. Yeah, you know what, let's fucking torch him."

He put a paw on her shoulder and took a deep breath, and with it, Radiance and Shadow coalesced into a blazing inferno.

"Mhynt? This one looks...!"

"This will hurt. But at least we can gain some distance...!" She jumped away, but not before tossing a few enervating shots Powehi's way.

"You want corruption... Then take it! All my grief, all the strife... this conflict is just one fool of a saint, or a fool of a mortal trying to usurp one... A world of wretches crawling for scraps of power, to the point where its very embodiment of negativity winds up being the reliable one!"

She threw a few more blows as Zena followed up.

"It's awfully familiar," the Milotic hissed. "Let us show you... the frustration we feel... and harness it as a fine dagger of defiance!"

At some point as Isidora fought against the images in her head, she had fallen to her knees. The damage from the treasure's death throes was beginning to take its toll on her, but it was still too early to go down. To allow herself to lose momentum when Powehi himself was next.

A floragato appeared at her side. "Can you stand? You've taken the brunt of two of those now."

Isidora growled as she focused on quelling her shadow. "I'm fine... I can handle it..."

The Phantom paused for a moment, then chuckled. "The magician's burden, hm?" He smiled and offered her his paw. "You are no longer alone in knowing it, Isidora."

Her ears perked. As strange of a time as it was to realize it, there was an understanding between them, one that no one else shared. She took the offer and pulled herself up, when he took his hold of her paw and abruptly pointed it at the transforming Powehi.

"I'll keep this brief. Our hearts beat softly so they do not burst. But though our experience has taught us to fear loss, there is no loss innate to our power here. That very sense of discipline is holding you back."

"What?" Isidora's eyes narrowed in confusion. Something about that rung strangely true, yet it couldn't be right, could it? She didn't feel like she was holding back. "Where's this coming from?"

He closed his eyes and grinned. "Perspective. But not experience. I cannot put this into practise, only you can." Then he let go of her, just as a clone of Powehi materialized where Ting-Lu once stood. "For Betelgeuse's sake, you know what you must do. Act recklessly, like a savage beast. Act like you have nothing to lose, and trust all that you've learnt to navigate you through the dangers. I'll support your performance from the wings should you falter."

The doubt he implanted in her head didn't dissipate. I'm holding back? But pulling away from the ambiguities in his words, Isidora understood innately what he meant by them.

Kneeling down, the weavile placed her claws on her shoulders. And after a brief, shaking hesitation, she threw aside everything that told her this was a terrible idea, and as much as she could, drew both energies down her arms at once.

Let's see what happens.

The Phantom Star stuck close to Isidora as she made her move against Powehi. As she tested her limits, it was more obvious now that she was holding back, measuring the risks she could afford the take. That is just in her nature, despite what she thinks. He trusted she would see her opportunity before long.

Isidora chose to retreat into the snow, and he followed, though he stole a glance behind him. It won't do to leave our allies in the dust.

He drew energy from his paw, passed some of that light to Isidora, and when he closed his eyes, he appeared from another perspective beside Mhynt and Dave. "Need some assistance?"

Powehi wanted them to get full of corruption? Fine. Fine. She could fucking do that.

Shadow was plentiful. Frustration and embarrassment that one of their Treasures had been late to be felled; anxiety and doubt about her ability to manifest the kind of strength everyone else could; fear of disappointing Mal; fear of letting down her friends; fear of losing--

--and to meet it all, that burning golden light: determination to find a solve; certainty that what she was doing was right; sheer bloodyminded stubbornness to keep fighting no matter what.

The light came to her, manifesting in that brilliant tactical overlay that showed her just what to do and where to aim... and another cracking sheen of dark frostbite manifested on the surface of her enemy's body. She pushed further, willing the fucking thing to die, to be destroyed, to fuck off and stay down. A storm whipped up, a storm of black feeling that only urged her onward.

It was so intense she could hardly bear it. She could hardly see for all the biting anger, a storm of sorrow, the pain, the hot shivers down her spine. Feverish, sick with misery, she couldn't feel her fingertips, failure failure failure failure--

Wo-Chien's body turned from an undulating mass of living peat and rotting leaf litter to a mound of inert compost, frozen over with a wintery crust. The tablets themselves fell to the ground, heavy with age, and grief, and thickening rime. There had been no projectile, only a howling presence of Shadow that sounded like an icestorm in one's skull. The Treasure itself gave out a clattering of wooden blocks against each other as the spirit left it, one that drummed and drummed away inside the mind...

A vision. A recording of evil deeds. A history of wrongdoings and black days and the shattering of all order. The duty of the King is to protect his people, is it not? Where is his wise governance? Do not repent, do not recant your truth, do not stay your tongue even if they should cut it out. Scream louder, that the people might hear you. None shall turn their eyes from the truth of things. All who do are complicit. All who refuse must suffer until they raise their voices in protest. A bitter rot grows in every heart, a grudge that cannot be appeased, a grudge that will see the mighty and his works torn down and destroyed. Cry out with tongueless voice until your resentment brings the realm entire to ruin.

Wo-Chien's Last Word: Memento of Ruin - Laura's remaining HP was halved! -2 Atk, -2 Mag.

As the last Treasure became inert, Powehi began to sing. One vessel's voice cried out, backed by the droning throat-singing of another, and the soaring whistle of the last. The sound resonated in the blood, in the bones, in the very soul. It was a simple melody, one which yearned for an antiphony – a counter-melody – to complete it. But there was no second voice to sing it. There was only absence; there was only hollow loss.

(cw: heavy descriptions of grief/mourning)
He sang in a language no Wayfarer spoke. Perhaps it did not translate, perhaps every speaker who knew that tongue had long since fallen beneath soil, sand, or sea. Yet still they understood it – it was a funeral dirge. A song of mourning, one the grim Lucario had sung a hundred thousand thousand times before, and yet still the grief was raw and sharp enough to strip the skin from flesh, to hook grief from one's heart and pull it from one's mouth.

As the song continued, each listener felt a growing awareness of their own mortality, their coming end. All things ended. Every long life, every great civilisation, even the stars themselves burned out given aeons enough. Go ahead and grieve for them. It is only the pain you must feel as payment for ever caring. Fated or not, listening to the song made one feel like their death was living in their chest, like oblivion was so close you couldn't help but touch it, a cold blackness that waited in the half-seconds between every beat of the heart, every breath of the lungs. You, too, will be beneath the earth one day. You, too, will be mourned for.

Andre, just about to fire another Bullet Seed, stopped in his tracks as Powehi began to sing.

Terror. Horrible, horrible terror. The knowledge that his existence would come to an end - Andre had known it since he'd first learned it and lived with it in relative peace, thinking he still had a long time left and he didn't need to think about it until he was much older. But this... this was different. This was a blade to his throat rather than one in the kitchen cabinet, safely tucked away for another day.

Yet that wasn't even the worst part.

This is... what they felt, he thought. This is what they felt before I killed them. This is that feeling which was such a lovely shade of violet, so silky smooth. This is what it was actually like.

He shook. His eyes watered. He felt just as much like a frightened little deer as he looked.

He wanted to say something - anything - but it felt meaningless. Nothing would take away what he'd done. Nothing would bring those people back. Nothing could ever grant him absolution.

He stood there, barely registering the steps coming his way until their owner was in front of him.

Ben. And the bear was crying, too. But beyond the sorrow on his face, there was...
something else?

"Hey," the ursa said, frowning. "Snap out of it." He sniffed, then wiped his nose.

Andre looked up at him. "How could I... how could I snap out of it?" the deerling began, quietly. "How could you tell me to... forget what I've done?" His voice grew in volume. "How could you even suggest that? Don't you care?"

"I care!"
Ben roared, startling the smaller mon. "I care so fucking much, and you couldn't begin to understand it. But guess what? He's gone. It's like the song says. He's gone, and all I can do is mourn."

A sob escaped his throat, but that something stayed on his face - no, strengthened. It was determination. "But... we have something to do here. We - and especially you - have giving back to do."

Andre sniffled. "But how am I supposed to --"

"You just do it."

The deerling stared at the twisted face of the ursa. How is he... so strong?

They stayed like that for some time, Powehi's song tearing at both their hearts. Finally, Andre grit his teeth and wiped his tears away.

"Okay. Lead the way."

Interlude

"This is more like it," growled Powehi's voice in Betel's audio mic. "Less sloppy than I feared."

"Why... are you so... pessimistic?" asked Betel, their voice lagging with the effort of staying attuned to much corruption. "Have they not... performed well?"

"They have. But it is my nature to foresee the worst. We need naive fools like you to believe in better fates."

In truth, Betel was nearly shutting down from the storm of light and darkness howling inside their body. Their mind was thinning out like diluted paint, their thoughts wouldn't stick to things, they just ran, dripping down, down, into nothingness. There wasn't enough in their head to stand up to all this rage and sorrow and spite. They could only let it thrum and drone, unresisting, their processors fixed solely on making it through somehow.

And yet even in this state, they would not say that they would fail. They couldn't. If they were going to be strong enough, then they had to be strong enough now. And if they were strong enough now, then they would not admit that they could fail.

Powehi's ghostly wisp chuckled drily, his voice rasping like sand on a desert wind. "Some of them have Awakened," he murmured.

"The others... are also capable. I believe in them."

"And what of yourself?"

Betel did not answer. If they could not bring themself to answer in the affirmative... then they would say nothing.

When that haunting melody filled Lyra’s heart and mind, her vision suddenly started blurring and her cheeks dampened, with the dark surroundings of that afterlife melting into an Impressionistic, sorrowful painting immortalized on an infinite canvas. Her throat tightened, short and fast breaths struggling to slip through her narrowed windpipe, and a splitting headache pressed against her skull, making her entire physical world spin wildly.

Eyes burning and wide with dread, she felt so much smaller under that starless night, and she did all she could to not blink too often. Because with each unwanted blink, the Lethe faded more and more, and a sterile and oppressive white grew brighter and clearer…

It wasn’t fair! It wasn’t fair! How did that happen? Why was all of that happening? It wasn’t fair, it wasn’t fair, it wasn’t fair! Not her, not her, why HER?!

Lyra couldn’t stop crying. She didn’t want to stop crying. A part of her still wished, hoped, that everything was just a terrible nightmare, a mean prank, and that her tears would somehow rewind time and get everything back to normal. Back to how her life was meant to be and to continue.

But that was her new normal, her new life, her new future. The incurable disease had finally taken its toll, like a cruel and apathetic reaper, and left behind a motionless and cold body on a hospital bed and a pair of inconsolable, motherless girl and widowed father.

It was her fault, wasn’t it? If only she had known better and done things better, then maybe… there would have been many more years together. More chances to tell her how much they loved her smile, and her energy, and her love…

“Mom… I’m sorry…” Lyra choked out, furiously rubbing her eyes to clear her never-ending tears. It had been years since that horrible tragedy happened, and yet, and yet… the pain never faded, didn’t it? It just dulled and flared up from time and time again. The crushing agony that reminded her that her heart had so much love she couldn’t offer to her mother anymore because fate had decided to be merciless.

And yet she had always loved her, hadn’t she? Lyra became the girl she was because of her, after all. Even when she traveled back to the past with Celebi, wanting to prevent that event, even if that meant ceasing to exist, and to meet her mother again and tell her what was going to happen… she simply smiled and told her those words:

“Don’t be sad, my sweet Lyra. I know I won’t have much to live but I have no regrets. I’m happy I’ve got you as my daughter and I’m so proud of how you’ll take care of me throughout my illness and of how you’ll grow into a good person. I love you, and even if we won’t be able to share our days together for much longer, I want you to find your happiness and keep living a good life. For me, but especially for yourself.”

“I love you, too, Mom…” Lyra whispered with a sad smile, then she began a quick meditation exercise: Breathe in. It’s not your fault. Breathe out. You’re a strong person. Breathe in. These feelings are normal; let them out. Breathe out… and her heart and tears slowed.

“Find your happiness…” she murmured to herself. While the sadness still lingered in her spirit and festered in the reopened wound in her heart, a new wave of warmth and determination also pulsed inside her body.

After getting her bearings, Lyra jumped back into action, her mind fully captured by thoughts of the red-haired boy who had stolen her heart. “I found my happiness, Mom.”

These wings, this storm. This was how things were meant to be. The sea's true power, stolen away by the soul magic of this foreign world, now Virga's to command and control once again. Impossible to strip away for good, should there ever have been any doubt that it would return?

The sea's will, united with its human. How ironic, the twist of fate that had brought them to this moment. The jackal wished to see them awaken? Then he would feel it, and know the sea's true name.

It felt good. The rush of power uniting them both. That feeling of their auras synergizing, amplifying each other. Wings beating, lightning crackling. Fighting in sync like it was what they'd been meant to do ever since that day she'd sworn the pact in the undersea cave beneath the Whirl Islands. Almost good enough that Jade could ignore the imminent counterattack and focus only on the next strike, the next strike, wind and thunder and endless burning Radiance all melded together into a raging storm. No more feeling outmatched, outclassed, constantly fighting uphill battles. No more fear and failure and regret and shame and—

The Shadows cut through the buzz of Radiance in Jade's head. The song, the one that'd been building in the background, finally reached her ears, and with it, the thunder grew still, grew quiet. And in that endless stillness, she saw how it would end. How it already had ended, because it had already happened from the moment she'd tied herself to this path, this fate. The cold certainty of what it meant to be chosen, the choice that'd already been made for her long ago. The icy fist clutching her chest as she made her decision.

She wouldn't remember any of it back home. She couldn't. That was how this worked. Would she have been able to face it if she knew? All the pain, all the adversity, and for what? She'd never see what came next.

And still, she had to press on. It wasn't courage that guided those final moments. It was something else.

The song ended, as all things did. And so, the storm returned.

Death’s Vow rang through the air, threading through Anubis’ soul, stirring up thoughts. Language wasn't needed to understand, not when he was accustomed to communicating without it. The notes rolled over him, calling forth visions and knowledge of what would come to pass as inevitable. Everything he dreaded. Loss and failure, sacrifice and pain. The end.

He saw his father, sprawled on a sunny rock, grooming himself. So unaffected by the very important question Anubis felt he was asking. His father yawned a little. “You could leave. You don’t need to stick around if you don’t want to.”

“Leave!?” he glared up at his father fiercely. “I can’t just leave. That’s... thats...”

“Lazy?” His father’s feline smirk made it clear he still wasn’t serious.

“Irresponsible,” he declared defiantly, snapping his jaws.

His father stretched deep with his forepaws, flexing his claws as he yawned. “What will you do then?”

Accusation flashed in his gaze as he countered the question. “You didn’t leave. You stayed with mother.”

A gleam flashed in his father’s eyes as he turned his attention fully on Anubis. “True,” he purred. “I didn’t. But I simply don't care about the inevitable. Or anything really.”

"That doesn't make sense. And you didn't answer my question. I need to know what to do." What was his father getting at? Surely he didn’t not care about anything. About his mate. How could he be so apathetic?

“Getting tangled up in worries is no good, you know. Do whatever you want, nobody is stopping you.” He paused, licking a paw. “It is what it is,” he said simply.

His lips curled. Did his father care about anything? “Well I’m still staying!” he declared fiercely. “I want to become a trainer’s pokemon. His starter. And I’ll just make sure nothing bad happens. I’ll make sure I don’t lose him. Ever.”

He remembered that conversation, so long ago. He'd been just a pup, asking if he should become a trainer’s pokemon, and what if something happened to his trainer. At the time, he hadn't understood really. But his father’s words made sense now. It wasn’t truly apathy. It was acceptance. Do what you want.

Primal conviction swelled in Anubis' chest. What his Namesake felt, he could never grasp. But he could be there, still. He paused, then tipped his head back and let his howl join with Powehi’s. Everything he felt, he poured into his own mournful cry, weaving it into Powehi’s song. He could strive, but sure as night followed day, so would death come eventually. Yveltal’s Embrace awaited them all. One day, his pack would be gone. One day, his Alpha.

And yet...

His howl strengthened again, filling with determination and defiance. With love.

One day, but not now.

Breath still filled his lungs and fire burned in his spirit and thunder in his heart.

Death would have them but not today. Not here, nor when they faced the one who threatened this world. Until the end came, he would fight. Alpha needed him, had called out and brought him here, and he would see this mission through. The last notes of his howl met Powehi’s song and shone bright with hope.

Blacklight erupted from Anubis body as a red-yellow glow encompassed his form. He felt his limbs lengthening, shoulders broadening, and then a pressure building at his neck. An electric buzz ran through his body, followed by blazing heat, before power blossomed. Slowly, the light faded and his senses reasserted.

Distantly, he was aware he’d changed. His vision was different, senses sharper. Everything looked... more. No time for that, focus. He only had one goal for now. The rest of the team was managing but...

‘Alpha?’

Three heads scanned the battlefield. It’d felt like the song had lasted an eternity, but he realized only moments had passed. He spotted him, some yards ahead.

Alpha lashed out, dissipating the shadow-copy of the Manectric that had attacked him. Then, as Anubis watched, Alpha’s entire body went rigid and his gaze locked onto the ground beneath. Yet Anubis could see nothing there. ‘...Alpha-?’ Then shadows arose and swallowed his trainer.

"Ufff..."

Mhynt had been knocked down to a kneel when that blast struck Owen, the empathic connection they shared sending that same damage right back to her. Owen, dazed, remained in her shadow once again. The song rang, and while they'd defended against the worst of it, she still understood what it meant.

And she laughed.

"Do you really think that's..." She struggled to her feet again, the Reviver Seed near her turning to dust. "...going to discourage me?" She brandished her blade, if only as leverage in the soil. "I have spent the better portion of one thousand years seeking that final release, not out of despair, but hope for what should be! To free the souls trapped within a realm just like this one, twisted by the same tyrant who nearly took over yours at a moment of weakness."

She stepped forward, but her shadow did not follow. Owen arose from the earth and exhaled slowly. "We already know death because we defeated it, and now we're trying to bring it back," Owen stated. "All you're doing is reminding us of what we're fighting for. To give all Pokemon who were deprived of their right to a proper death... the chance to pass on!"
"There is nothing to mourn about the return of death in our world," Zena hissed, light blazing from her prismatic scales. "That is our very goal... We already know its fears. And we know how terrible life is without it!

"Owen! Mhynt!"

"Ready!"

Mhynt raised her blade. Owen dove into it. Zena swirled a great vortex of water around her whole body, throwing it upon the blade, which grew to twice, then thrice her size. Water revitalized the trio--wounds stitched themselves back together, blood revitalizing through their veins. Then, Mhynt pointed the blade toward Powehi, taking a great and far aim.

"In other words," Mhynt said, "Don't threaten me with a good time."

And she fired, blasting away the rocks with a great torrent of water. The way was clear for the others to follow up.

Powehi’s words etched themselves into Koa’s bones and carved into his soul. Crushing weight pressed upon him as the grief choked him, as if paws had reached into his chest and pulled the emotion out of his throat. His eyes watered and blurred his vision as he tried to swallow the emotions.

The shadowed hound's teeth pierced his leg and he howled in pain and fury. He tore into the apparition and watched with satisfaction as it melted beneath his blows, turning into a puddle of inky blackness. Satisfaction gave way to fear as the puddle spread, pooling around his paws, clinging to his fur.

He looked down into the void and a pair of glowing red eyes glared back.

cw: grief, drowning, general trauma
He recoiled in shock. Writhing spectral tentacles rose up, wrapping around him. In a panic, Koa jerked back, but they tightened then yanked him into the depths. Endless nothing swallowed his vision. He writhed and fought, only to choke on whatever substance it was. His senses began to fade. Powehi’s song sounded so far away... His chest burned with the need for oxygen but he fought the urge to breathe again. Radiance, if he could just- He tried to reach for the light, but felt only emptiness. His body spasmed as he clamored for air and found none. He thrashed in one last pitiful attempt to escape. It meant nothing.

Was this it?

Tasteless fluid poured into his lungs, driving out the last motes of air. Then everything grew still.

He lurched back to consciousness choking and gasping, gulping for air. When he opened his eyes, it was to a starlit forest clearing. A cool breeze ruffled the dense trees and a full moon cast a soft glow, silhouetting the world around him. He rose, realizing distantly that he was standing on two legs again. No longer a Manectric. Was this a dream...?

A gust of icy wind cut through his jacket and he rubbed his arms as he scanned the area. It felt different than his other dreams here. Dense fog hung over everything. He could just make out the faint silhouettes of broken temple columns rising all around. Old memories crept up on him. He knew this place. This was where the legends were defiled... He shivered under the assault of another gust of wind, then froze, his gaze catching upon a figure ahead.

It stood with its back to Koa, half-shrouded by mist. Koa stopped short as the mist parted enough to make out spiked hair and a familiar stance. Cyrus. His fists clenched and his body stiffened. He took a step forward, rage congealing in his chest.

The shadow spilling out from Cyrus in spite of the weak starlight brought him to halt. He realized with a start his fist was half raised to strike. A shiver ran through him. Unmistakably, the shadow wasn’t human but a Luxray. Odd... His father never had a Luxray.

It didn’t matter. He lunged and grabbed Cyrus. His father whirled around and for the first time in some six years, Koa got a good look at...

Himself.

A face like his own. Same amber eyes from his mother, blue hair (hers), spiked hair (his). A level, cold stare (his). He staggered back, chills buzzing through him. His own shadow stretched forth, unnatural and distorted, into a shape he recognized. Tufted hair, pointy ears and wings. One Luxray, one Crobat. This was like what Archie had described at the Comb. Was that... what he could have been? An array of dark emotions welled inside him at the sight of himself. He tensed, half expecting a fight, wanting a fight-

Without a word, Other Koa turned back around. He saw Himself drop to his knees, on the place where the world had been broken, shoulders shaking. A soft, strange noise carried through the ever thickening mist. One that took Koa a few seconds to recognize.

Weeping.

Grieving.

Uncomfortable recognition gripped Koa. A moment that never happened, but an emotion that had. His fingers dug into his palms as he clenched them. How dare he. How dare He grieve that monster. Hate tightened his chest. It wasn’t fair.

Dark trails of tears ran down Other Koa’s cheeks, dripping down and staining the cracked tiles of the temple black. The stain spread, slithering up Other Koa’s body and crawling outwards.

In seconds, his other self was drowned in shadow and swallowed entirely. Trembling, Koa took a step back. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end and he gasped in a vain purchase for oxygen. The air grew even thicker and his chest tightened. Red eyes flashed within the depths.

Slowly, inch by inch and then foot by foot, Something began to rise from the stain. Serpentine, sinuous, cloaked in darkness and flickers of crimson light.

Run! Flee! Koa felt his limbs trembling, but his legs didn’t move, his eyes still locked upon the figure. A low, terrible thrum began. Not so much a sound as a sensation, filling the air, rising through his feet, crawling through his bones and peeling his psyche.

Then fog parted with a violent shrieking Noise. Cold stone met Koa’s knees, he found himself kneeling, hands clamped over his ears and his own mouth opened in a scream drowned out a thousand times over.

Dread and terror pounded in him. Why had he come? Why had he tried, when he knew the truth? Knew what he was. He’d suffer the same fate as his father. As he should.

They towered above him, ink-black wings blotting out the starry sky, swallowing the moon and all light as its soundless wail filled the night. You do not belong here.

Suffocating weight pressed in on all sides, until he thought he might be crushed. He found himself drawing for breath but little oxygen met his lungs. This wasn’t a dream. This was something more. Something real.

What legendary would accept you? You’ll never be good enough.

Giratina’s cry rang out again, a noise of endless hatred and infinite rage, raging at the unfairness, at the world and at creation - ( at you, at your failures)- No, no its not I’m not-

No.

That wasn’t the call of destruction. It wasn’t judgement. Echoing under it he could hear the same call he’d heard from Powehi.

Pain. Grief, buried beneath that anger. Guilt, for the weight of past misdeeds. Mourning, for the world, for losses long forgotten.

With painstaking effort, Koa willed himself to look. The crimson glow shining from the bands around its serpentine frame caught on the myriad of Red Chains encircling its body. Chains upon chains, restraining it, enslaving it, suffocating it.

Giratina cried again, but now it sounded of agony. Suffering. Koa lurched to his feet, fighting against the weight pressing in. He bounded forwards, hardly realizing that it was pawsteps and not footsteps now. Only thinking of the power he needed.

Never again. This wasn't right. He had to fix this.

He clenched his paw into a fist and drove it into one of the chains-

Koa's Mach Punch dealt 20 damage to Red Chain! It's not very effective...

Ice cut through his soul and a shock of crackling pain shot up his leg, followed by static buzzing through his brain. He staggered back, dizziness almost knocking him off his paws. One chain had cracked.

Too many more encircled Giratina.

Pathetic. Useless.

Swallowing the emotion down, Koa lunged forward with a feral snarl, body sparking. He struck again, breaking a link, only to stumble back, his whole body buzzing, his thoughts fracturing.

Koa's Thunder Punch dealt 32 damage to Red Chain!

You see? Spirit means nothing.

Get a grip. He swayed on his paws. Fought down the surging shadow, pushed down the rising tide of emotion. He had to do this, had to free Giratina, had to make it right. Control, he just needed to control it and be strong enough-

Giratina’s cry echoed his own as he attacked again, with everything he had, with all his desire. One more chain shattered, yet it made no difference. He could see the glistening red bonds, wrapped around its throat, around its wings. It was writhing in agony, thrashing uselessly.

You’ll never be free. Face the truth, you cannot hide from who you are.

Koa focused...
Koa's Critical Thunder Punch dealt 68 damage to Red Chain! It was somewhat effective...

Koa’s legs shook and his vision swayed. Too weak. You’ll never make a difference Koamaru-

Wind howled, but he heard something else, cries. Howls and high-spirited shrieks and bellows and a roar. His team... he couldn’t see them but for a moment, he was sure he heard their spirits. Calling out to him.

Can't... give up... He struck again, a devastating flurry of blows alight with radiance and shadow.

Koamaru Averon's Ganbatte Blacklight Barrage dealt 113 Damage! It's Super Effective!

You’ll never be good enough, never be anything more Koamaru Averon-

L̴I̸A̴R̴

A voice roared through his thoughts. His vision evened out and his thoughts cleared as his memory and senses returned. He was standing on two legs again. No Manectric body, no light to call upon, no shadow. No power. Memories gave rise to burning frustration as he slammed his fist into the cold stone beneath. You cannot hide from what you are. From who you are.

Rage surged through him, rage at Cyrus for the harm he caused, rage for the lives he’d cost, rage for the injustice. And rage at the unfairness. Rage at hiding and doubting and biting his tongue and a thousand excuses and lies. He was sick of it, sick of pretending.

Overlapping echoes, a mix of memory and something Else, rippled through him.

FACE THE TRUTH

His fury peaked. The truth didn’t change because he hid from it. Covering it couldn’t alter it, hiding it had only ever made it harder, made him suffocate. He did grieve, for everything he'd wanted from Cyrus and couldn't have. And he did hate. Yet that alone wasn't what drove him. He wouldn't he couldn’t give up, not even if he had to pull apart each chain link by link. Not because he had to prove anything. Not to himself, or the world.

But because it was right. Because he wanted this.

He closed his eyes.

'let your anger fuel your fists, not your mind'

Then he cried out to the heavens and struck the Chains.

Koamaru Sonnewik used.... Rage Fist!

Koamaru Sonnewik's CRITICAL Galvanized Rage Fist dealt a catastrophic 487HP! KO!

The Red Chains exploded into shimmering crimson dust. Above, the starlight returned and the moon emerged from the blanket of shadow. All around, the pressure abated until Koa could breathe again and hear properly as Giratina’s scream faded. A chilly yet oddly pleasant breeze ruffled his hair and he looked up, swallowing a gasp.

Mere inches from his head, Giratina stood, gazing down at him. Koa forced himself to meet Its eyes, terrified of the disappointment he might see. Instead, he saw... pride. Relief and a kind of acceptance pressed upon him. Averon. The name he chose to carry, his own but not his own. Sonnewik... More a truth than a name. A truth he could bear.

Closing his eyes, Koa instinctively reached out. A force pressed against his palm, and a ghostly tingle ran down his spine, spreading over his whole body until it settled into his very soul and became his.

T̶̠̀̎H̶̝̖̊͠A̴̢̓N̴̺͂Ḱ̴͉ ̷̤̅Y̵͕̱͌͊O̶͓̥̓U̶̼̓̇

From a pool of shadow, Koa rose. Distortion dripped from his body as he stepped forward, then. shook himself. He rolled his shoulders as he opened his eyes, blinking. Still on Lethe, though it seemed as if only a few moments had passed. Had he dreamt everything?

No. He felt... different. Stronger still, yet more at ease than ever before. He turned instinctively to seek out Anubis and make sure he was okay- he recoiled with a gasp. Anubis had changed. Not into a mega-houndoom, like he’d once imagined. Into something else. More.

Three heads rose from his broad shoulders, somewhere between apparitions and solid entities. One like a fierce Luxray and the other shining Houndoom. He’d grown, too, big enough that if he was human Koa was pretty sure he could ride him. “Anubis, you... you evolved!” Pride filled him all over. He’d have to ask him about his appearance after this...

Alpha was staring back at him with an equally stunned expression. “Speak for yourself, Alpha!” For the first time, Koa took a good look at himself. His eyes widened and he drew a sharp breath.

Ghostly wing-like appendages, like Giratina’s, rose from his back. He had wings. Wings! He flexed them experimentally. A new energy coursed through him, something cold and otherworldly. The power of a legend.

“Sick!” Koa locked eyes with his partner. Electricy flared through him, spiking his fur. “Let’s show him what we can do.”

Anubis flashed his fangs in a predatory grin. “I’ll light the way.” He howled, three voices in harmony. Radiant fire, toxic flames and shadowed lightning blended together and struck true.

For a moment, Koa drank in the sight. Whatever happened when they left, he wanted to remember this. Being here, fighting alongside his pokemon. His lost starter, found again.

Anubis and Koamaru Sonnewik. He flexed his paw, then flew toward Powehi. No light, no shadow. Just him.

All of him.
