Terrain: Artisan Cave

While crowds gather to watch the league championships rage aboveground, a smaller, rather more furtive group of trainers are drawing together in a somewhat more subterranean locale. A small, ragged opening in the side of the cliff at the edge of the Battle Frontier leads into a surprisingly spacious cavern. This is the fabled Artisan's Cave, home to Hoenn's only native population of smeargle and now the stomping ground of trainers looking to shoulder their way into the ranks of those battling for the championship.

Powerful halogen lights cast a cold white glow through what would ordinarily be a dim cave, and most of the wild smeargle have been scared away by the crowd and the unnatural illumination. One or two can still be seen lurking in the shadows, curiosity overcoming fear, and every trainer has managed to acquire one--which they are now frantically training up, teaching all the techniques they can think of before a battle in which the freshly-caught pokémon will be their only companion.

The center of the cave is flat and open stone, leaving plenty of space for unhindered brawling. Around the edges, though, it starts to rise in uneven, craggy tiers, with plenty of loose stones and jutting stalagmites providing a potential means of escape or gaining higher ground for any smeargle inclined to take advantage. The ceiling of the cavern is high enough as to be lost in darkness so that any weather conditions magically called into play by the smeargle's sketch will function as normal.

A whine of feedback cuts through the chatter of the trainers crowded into Artisan's Cave, eliciting winces and expectant silence in the anxious group. Battle pairings are read off and a general scuffle ensues as people try to pair up, try to find an empty spot to start their match, try to figure out where their smeargle got off to while they weren't looking. After brief confusion most of the trainers manage to get sorted out, a couple giving a last few desperate instructions to their smeargle companions, gesturing with paint-spattered hands while the pokémon looks on in confusion. As the referee appears to handle the match, there can be no more stalling: nervous smeargle are hurriedly ordered forward, commands are given, and the battles commence--while, all the while, curious eyes gleam out of the darkness as the round's strange audience crowds around just out of reach of the light, waiting to see the outcome of this unexpected gathering.

Oops. I forgot Smearagle could have 2 abilities. I'll go with Technician.

OhGodsonervousD': Alrighty.

Resin, start off by sticking up a 15% substitute. Then, Icy Wind, unless he's somehow inaccessible (Protect, Fly, etc.) then use Swords Dance. Icy Wind if you haven't already or if it missed, otherwise Force Palm. Swords Dance if the other Smearagle is inaccessible. If you're asleep for the 1st or 2nd action, Sleep Talk.

Hypnosis, preferably before the Sub is made, Wake-Up Slap, then Thunder Wave. If he's not asleep, replace your second and third actions with Fly and then a swooping Iron Tail from on high.

As the trainers' commands ring out around the cave, Resin hesitates, unsure of his new techniques and trying to work out how he should proceed. Emo Van Gogh, on the other hand, is spurred into action by the urgency of his order and works quickly to get his attack in before Resin can use his own. Drawing his tail through the air in front of him, Emo smears fanciful shapes in a rainbow of colors in the space before him. Resin's nervousness subsides as he watches the other smeargle's tail move gracefully back and forth, his abstract art oddly soothing. Resin finds he can't tear his eyes away from Emo's display, and he wobbles a little where he stands, blinking his eyes in an attempt to clear away the heavy lethargy that has suddenly settled over his mind. There's no breaking the spell of the hypnosis now, though, and the smeargle collapses in a deep, unnatural slumber.

He's barely touched the floor before he starts to twitch and murmur in his sleep, though, his tail lashing and a few drops of magical paint pattering to the ground around him. As though possessed, the smeargle gets back to his feet--and that's all Emo Van Gogh sees before something slams into his side and sends his stumbling away. The confused smeargle turns to find Resin standing just where Emo had been a moment ago, eyes closed and breathing heavy. How on earth the smeargle managed to get up and attack before Emo realized it is beyond the smeargle, but as his opponent slumps back to the ground, he decides he should take no chances on further surprise attacks.

Trotting over to where Resin lies, Emo starts to smack him about the head with his tail, leaving big smears of paint on the other smeargle's cheeks as he beats wakefulness back into him. The paint seems to increase the force of the blows, and Resin's head snaps back and forth as his eyes fly open, dazed with pain and disorientation. Emo retreats as he recognizes his opponent's wakefulness, while Resin scrambles back to his feet, rubbing his face and then grabbing up his tail in his other paw. Sweeping it in an arc before him, he sprays a fine mist of paint droplets from it that sail through the air towards Emo, transforming into particles of ice blown on a chilly wind as they do so.

Emo shivers as the icy wind brushes up against him, chilling his muscles and laying a thin layer of frost down in his fur. While he recovers, Resin is painting a mysterious symbol on the back of his paw, the energy in his paint causing the mark to glow as soon as it is completed and a raging ball of fighting energy to begin to collect in his palm as it draws power from the arcane sketch-mark. Resin rushes forward and slams his paw into Emo's chest, hurling the other smeargle away as the fighting energy in his palm discharges in a spray of power.

Emo lands in an undignified heap, wincing as the shock of the force palm rattles through his body. Fortunately, he seems to have escaped any lasting damage from the attack and is able to get back to his feet and give his tail a flick, spraying a zigzag of paint that transforms into a zipping tendril of electrical charge. The thunder wave strikes Resin and makes him quiver and twitch as it systematically scrambles the nerve impulses going to and from his mucles, leaving the smeargle a paralyzed wreck.

Emo, if your opponent does nothing but twitch and curse you under his breath on the first action, go with a Rolling Kick combined with a Rapid Spin. Otherwise, Fly. If your flying, spam with Aura Sphere, but dodging any attacks should take precedence over the Aura Spheres. Otherwise, use Smellingsalts.

Alright, I think I spy a loophole here. If Emo van Gogh isn't in the air, he'll use Smellingsalt, amiright? So, let's pull out my trump card (so early whaaat): Fake Out. After that, wait until he's used Smellingsalt, to make sure paralysis doesn't get in the way, then Swords Dance. Finally, since he isn't flying, he should just sit there, so get'em good with a Focus Punch.
If paralysis decides to interfere with our plans, though, try your best to relax on the 1st action, use Conversion 2 on the 2nd action (after Smellingsalt, of course), and Focus Punch on the 3rd action.

Emo watches Resin closely, tail poised to draw out a response to his opponent's next action. The other smeargle raises his own tail and takes a couple steps towards Emo, and the waiting smeargle tenses, ready to sketch out some wings and be gone. Resin's gait is faltering and unsteady, though, and the smeargle stumbles, panic flashing across his face as full paralysis takes hold and he can't stop himself from crashing to the floor.

A confident smirk settles on Resin's face as he kicks into a spin, paint spraying from his tail in a swirling trail that coils around him in a corkscrew shape. The smeargle revolves faster and faster, his attack fueled by the energy in his paint, then swoops forward and catches Resin with the edge of a sweeping foot, picking the other smeargle up off the floor and tossing him away across the arena. Resin lands heavily, still locked in the grip of paralysis, and can only watch helplessly as Emo slows to a graceful halt, then starts trotting towards him again.

Emo swipes a bit of paint onto both of his palms as he walks, then rubs his paws together to spread it equally across both. Leaning over his incapacitated foe, the smeargle starts slapping him on the shoulders, on the back, on the face--all over his body, the stimulation shocking coordination back into unresponsive muscles and relieving Resin of his paralysis.

Of course, the heavy blows are far from pleasant, beneficial though they might be, and as soon as he gains sufficient control over his limbs, Resin scrambles away from Emo, wincing as the bruises raised by the smellingsalt start to complain. What with all this status infliction and painful cure, he's starting to feel more than a little under the weather.

Nothing to do now but keep fighting, though. Resin twirls his tail through the air idly as he thinks back over what attacks he's seen Emo use over the course of this battle. He tries to think them back through in his mind--just how the other smeargle created them, what it felt like to get hit by them--and, at last, he seizes on one that he remembers particularly well. Resin's eyes snap open and he works quickly, swiping his paintbrush tail over his arms and torso, his legs and head, causing no apparent change but to erase the paint left over from Emo's attacks. But beneath the smeargle's skin new synapses are forming, neurons are growing and a wave of new sensory information starts to blare into his head. As Resin puts the finishing touches on his conversion, the smeargle shakes his head ruefully--who'd have thought it'd be so confusing to be a psychic type?

What he's about to do next isn't very psychic-like, though. Resin swipes a large and very complex rune onto the back of one paw, which immediately grows warm as power rushes into it. Resin clenches the paw into a fist and closes his eyes, pouring as much energy as he can into his paw and letting the rune refine it into a focused attack. Golden light surrounds the smeargle's paw, and Emo starts to fall back slowly, not quite sure what his opponent intends to do but having the feeling that he doesn't want to be around to find out. He's too late at his retreat, though; Resin opens his eyes again, fist transformed into a fireball of golden light, and runs at Emo, his whole right arm dragging an arc of golden light through the air as he goes. The focus punch strikes with incredible force, and this time it's Emo's turn to go flying, landing in a smoking heap three meters from his opponent and shaken to his core.

Mmm, that didn't go too well, but we're still more or less on par. Actually, Emo is slower than you, so we'll be able to attack first.

So first, give him a Taunt - you know you're better than he is! Make those insults loud and vindictive. If he Protects, Swords Dance, and Taunt him on the next action.

Next! If Taunt worked, Spore.

Finally, if Emo isn't asleep right now, use Spore. Otherwise, Swords Dance.

Resin pauses, trying to think of some good insults to lay on his opponent. There's the obvious, of course, mocking his artistic ability, and his general appearance, but surely he can come up with something better than that?

If so, Emo doesn't give him the chance to try. Though still smarting from the focus punch, the other smeargle is quick to react, paintbrush flitting around his paw at an incredible rate as he sketches out the runes for his next attack. The next thing Resin knows, his opponent has somehow managed to go from lying down on the far side of the arena to slamming a paw crackling with electricity into his gut. Resin staggers away, shivering as a jolt of electricity blasts through his body. Emo shakes out his hand, keeping a wary eye on his opponent and breathing heavily as he recovers from the combo.

By this point, Resin has lost his train of thought, but he does his best to get the taunt started, throwing out all his old standby insults and doing his best to improvise. Emo isn't impressed, though; the other smeargle merely snorts and rolls his eyes, then starts to sketch himself a pair of gigantic butterfly wings.

Panicking, Resin changes tack on a dime, sweeping his tail forward and casting a cloud of paint droplets Emo's way. The paint transforms into a cloud of powerful sleep inducing spores as it travels towards Emo. The smeargle works as fast as he can on his wings, but his slowed state doesn't give him enough time to fly up above the attack before it engulfs him. Emo tries to fight the overwhelming fatigue that grips his body, but the powerful spore wins handily, and his wings vanish as he collapses in a snoring heap.

Resin lets out a sigh of relief as he sees his opponent succumb to sleep. He's got a bit of time to himself, and he's going to start using it to buff himself a bit. Some exuberant sketching lends him a pair of wicked-looking swords. While Emo slumbers, Resin goes through a furious series of drills, sword blades whistling through the air as he pumps himself up, falling into a warrior's focus and getting his adrenaline up in preparation for dealing more devastating blows later. The swords crumble away to nothing with use, but Resin's practice does not, and the smeargle shakes his arms out grimly, ready to deal some serious damage.

Well, we'll use that Chill opening to pull out a Focus Punch. After that, Dig down. Make the tunnel curve at a roughly 90-degree angle, so as to prevent most attacks from getting down to ya. Also, make yourself a little clearing where you have enough space to move around and not bonk your head on the roof if you can; if more energy is needed to do that, so be it. Finally, Chill, because you'll definitely need the energy later on. If Emo gets realllly lucky and manages to Sleep Talk Hypnosis, use Sleep Talk on the 2nd action, and Chill on the 3rd.

Emo lies quietly where he is, breathing deeply and regularly as he subconsciously recharges his batteries, as relaxed as can be. Resin, on the other hand, isn't in the mood for energy conservation. While his opponent is defenseless, he intends to strike, and strike hard. With adrenaline still fizzing through his veins after his swords dance, the smeargle is eager to try out a physical strike. Sketching a complex symbol on the back of his paw, Resin starts to raise power, refining it through the sketch into raw fighting energy. A golden glow springs up around his paw as energy builds, the air around it positively humming with destructive potential. With nothing to break his concentration, Resin is able to charge his focus punch up to full power, then at his leisure make his move, charging at his defenseless opponent and bringing the attack swinging down at his side.

The breath is blasted out of Emo's lungs as the focus punch strikes, his ribs creaking beneath the force of the blow and his light snoring transformed to choking and coughing as he tries to get his breath back. Still the powerful effects of the spore keep him under, although his sleep is noticeably less peaceful than before. Resin backs off, now genuinely panting with effort. There's no time to waste on chilling, though; he needs to put himself out of harm's way before taking a break.

Ordinarily, digging down through the rocky floor of the arena would no doubt be a challenge for any pokémon lacking substantial claws. For Resin it's no trouble at all, though. All the smeargle needs to do is sketch the outline of a hole on the floor and jump into the resulting pit, which appears exactly to his specifications, curving quite steeply around so that energy attacks directed in from above will have trouble finding him.

Unfortunately for Resin, Emo's subconscious has the perfect counter. The smeargle mutters to himself, twitching in his sleep as he blindly gropes for his tail. Raising it, he sketches a circle in the air, the paint flowing from his tail transforming into swirling blue-green energy that twists in upon itself, forming a solid sphere of power. The aura sphere zooms away from its point of creation, homing in on the aura of Resin where he lurks below the ground. Diving into the hole the other smeargle has created, it easily navigates its turn and smashes into Resin in a burst of power.

Resin is caught completely off-guard by the aura sphere, but after the last of it has dispersed into glowing tracers of energy, he decides there's no point in worrying about the potential for further attacks while he's in his hiding spot. For now, the best bet is just to relax and prepare for later attacks. Curling up at the bottom of his hole, the smeargle sighs and closes his eyes. Just a little nap, and then he'll be ready to kick some serious tail...

Meanwhile Emo is sleep-painting again, though this time he's working on his own paw rather than empty air. The symbol that he draws on the back of his paw bursts into flame almost as soon as it is laid down, and the smeargle rises unsteadily, tottering over to the lip of Resin's hole. Here he wavers uncertainly, a frown on his sleeping face and his muttering still more furious than before--and then he collapses again, paws hanging down into Resin's tunnel and his snout poking out over its lip.

Alright, a bit unlucky with the Aura Sphere, but this shouldn't be too hard. Emo is still sleeping, so fire off a bajillion Natural Gifts. There isn't much he can do to defend against these, and you've got a resistance to Aura Sphere, and you're protected by the damage cap. Whoo-hee.

There's always the threat of Rest, though, so as soon as Emo wakes up, Taunt him. Only use Taunt once during the round, though, and if Emo Protects to dodge it, just shift it to the next action. If he manages to Fly off before you can Taunt, don't even bother; go with Natural Gift.

If you see that he has raised a Protect, or is somehow out of the range of whatever attack you're going to use, opt for Swords Dance.

Resin opens a reluctant eye and stretches as best he can in the confines of his tunnel. Emo's light snores echo around the subterranean space, and Resin rolls his eyes as he points his tail towards the light pouring in through the hole above. A gleaming streamer of paint flows from Resin's tail, infused with the smeargle's deepest reserves of energy. The column of power rushes away up the tunnel and engulfs Emo's head on the way out; the smeargle lets out a snort of surprise and flails around in confusion as his sleep is broken by a searing blast of energy. He sits up awkwardly, sneezing and rubbing at watering eyes.

After he's recovered a little, Emo gets slowly back to his feet. He feels awful, and grouchy to boot--since when has Resin decided to try hiding out underground anyway? Dribbles of paint flow from the end of his brush and down the length of his tail, coating it in a thin layer of metal. Emo brings his iron tail cracking down, smashing it into the ground at the lip of Resin's hole. The rocky ground starts to crack, but the attack is not powerful enough to destroy the side of the tunnel entirely.

Resin winces as the iron tail connects with a loud smash, sending a thin streamer of dirt showering down on top of him. He's not sure what Emo is up to, but it looks like it failed, anyway--Resin isn't overly worried. Peering up at the light overhead, the smeargle calls out his most heartfelt taunts. This time, Emo isn't able to just shake them off: Resin's observations about how helpless Emo is to reach him up above and how close he is to collapse have a little too great a ring of truth to them. Gritting his teeth, Emo prepares another iron tail and brings it crashing down on the same spot he struck before. This time, the edge of the hole shatters, sending clods of dirt and broken pieces of rock tumbling down into Resin's tunnel, thoroughly blocking it.

The startled smeargle shields his head with his hands, coughing, as small rocks pelt him and his tunnel is filled with choking dust. As the debris settle and Resin's eyes become accustomed to the new dimness, it becomes clear that there is little point in trying another natural gift--the tunnel is securely blocked. Resin carefully sketches a pair of small swords in the air and reaches out to take them before they can fall to the ground. Weapons in hand, the smeargle does his best to approximate a swords dance, but the cramped confines of his tunnel don't leave him a lot of room for moving about. The smeargle scuttles about in a kind of half-crouch, knocking pieces out of the walls and ceiling with his swords as he brandishes them as best he can. As the dance comes to an end, Resin is feeling a bit exhilarated, but not nearly so much as he did after his earlier one.

Aboveground, Emo is restless; the smeargle paces around and around Resin's hole, fuming and lashing his tail. Resin's hole looks about as collapsed as it's going to get, but he's not about to go to sleep now. Not when there's the slightest chance he might be able to get revenge on Resin. The coward can't hide in his hole forever, after all, and as soon as he emerges, Emo will be there to greet him with his most vicious attack.
