Sunward Atop Sunrest Mesa

Oh.

... Oh.

Nova tensed. Gold talons dug into the dirt. This wasn't some random historian or Saint, then. This was... an advanced scouting party of one? Maybe a project lead? Someone with some degree of authority, anyway.

At the very least, she was not on their side. Not in the slightest, as far as Nova was concerned.

"You could say it was... educational," he coolly exclaimed. "Educational... about the danger that radiance poses. How it is not something meant to just be casually handled... let alone extracted, studied, manufactured, and so on."

Maybe... If she was a professor anything like the ones from my world, it means she's incredibly skilled and capable. 'Professor Mesoza' didn't ring a bell but Forlas seemed to be crawling with fallers and... ||and criminals and-|| she could have been from some other region or time.

A Cylizar variant?... Paldean? Hard to say, species didn't gurantee something. "Right. And I suppose you got permission to be here?" His tone was only slightly accusing, but more pointed than truly accusational. She had no right to infringe upon Sunward, especially not for this purpose. In the back of his mind, he was already gearing up for a fight, trying to analyze what weaknesses she had (water, maybe? Ice? Fairy...).

He eyed her with a narrowed gaze. "And why do you need Radiance so badly?" Not that he expected a real answer but it couldn't hurt to stall.

"Ah, of course."

She wasn't one of his father's contacts, didn't do anything like xenobiology. She'd become a dinosaur because she was a paleontologist.

Scientists and influential people both went to conferences. Often, they brought their kids like they would accessories, to show how this was event as an important milestone for the family, or to prove that yes there existed a person out there willing to fuck them, or just because it was never too early to have your little rich brats start networking. Lillie and himself had been the children of both categories of person, and had to tolerate being brought to a lot of pointless events where they'd spend most of their time tucked away in a side room like bags left at coat check when they weren't useful. Most of the sycophant kids were hell to be stuck with, but the handful of decent ones would slowly learn who each other were and to hope there'd be at least a few of each other at any given event instead of being alone. And at more science-focused conferences, if you could find the scientist's kids you'd usually do alright.

He hadn't been in the room with the adults to see anything about what she'd worked on firsthand. But he'd heard secondhand plenty of complaints about her and her husband's dumb stupid rocks. And he didn't know her name, but only because that older boy hadn't called them their first or last names. (And if Lillie wasn't nearby, he'd get to complain about his own parents back. It wasn't much for them to build off of, but sometimes that's just how it went with those situational acquaintanceships). Then, one day, that boy'd just stopped attending anything at all. Disappearing, leaving only a half-remembered half-friendship lodged somewhere in his brain.

"Yeah, our trip to the Caldera was plenty informative. We learned how pointed stones can be used to tear a hole in the fabric of the world..."

Certain organic crystal structures could create potential esoteric energies when they self-replicated. Z-crystals were one of them, taking in the sun's light and growing so that anyone in Alola could use their power provided they could earn it. But subject to the right stress, those same crystals could be forced to decay and release all of that esoteric energy at once as radiation. He remembered this as the process this father subjected z-crystals to in order to produce his pet wormhole. When'd his dad develop an interest in using crystals that way? Had it been around the same time he'd heard so much complaining about dumb stupid rocks? He couldn't remember. But he could guess, and see if he could dredge anything out of the murky waters of Mezosa's lost memory.

Gladion shot her a glare. "...But you'd already know about that. Wouldn't you, Professor?"

"She's wasting our time," Mhynt said, brandishing her blade without hesitation. "Step aside. You have ten seconds."

Every second they wasted was a second of them being able to set up whatever was going to disturb yet another great force. Shadows, Radiance, did it really matter in a world that was not equipped to handle either? Especially with the egos of the covenant at play.

Betel. Give us key targets. Perhaps a stern, guiding voice would help get their Mission Control to refocus. This is a complex operation and we need guidance so any delicate work doesn't disrupt the nearby Dungeon.

Looking was easier than talking, that much was true. Leaf tried to stop herself gouging a trench into the mesatop and just watched, hoping to make out anything weird or interesting under the protective gear and the scattered equipment.

It didn't look like the Covenant personnel unpacking supplies and assembling devices were here to fight. Some of them would give Leaf uncomfortable looks if she drew near, glancing to Mesoza in the expectation that she would protect them in battle. Their gear looked almost like beekeepers' suits, with reflective material sewn into the exterior, perhaps to protect against Radiance...

Some of them were deploying bulky, crude computers, like something out of the early digital revolution. All dials and knobs and switches, with tiny CRT screens.

One of the container crates was securely locked, and remained so for the moment. A dark pane of glass was set into its metal door...

"You could say it was... educational," he coolly exclaimed. "Educational... about the danger that radiance poses. How it is not something meant to just be casually handled... let alone extracted, studied, manufactured, and so on."
"Yeah, our trip to the Caldera was plenty informative. We learned how pointed stones can be used to tear a hole in the fabric of the world..."

"...But you'd already know about that. Wouldn't you, Professor?"

"What an interesting analogy," mused Mesoza. "It's true that if you directed enough exotic energy at a particular point, it's possible that the physical laws of matter and energy would behave unusually. My research suggests that this is one means by which a mystery dungeon might be formed. I have been learning all there is to know about Radiance since I first woke up on Forlas, and I can assure you, I have devised better methodology for practical experimentation than any predecessor you might liken me to."

She frowned only momentarily at Gladion's accusatory tone, as if she was wondering what he thought he knew that merited such venom. But it didn't upset her, and in any case, other Wayfarers were chiming in...

"Right. And I suppose you got permission to be here? And why do you need Radiance so badly?"

"Koamaru, in the present circumstance, I am the one issuing or withholding permission." The Professor flashed a disarming smile, an expression incongruous with her assertion of authority. "But to answer your other question—Radiance is a form of Infinity Energy which holds the secrets to the metaphysics of this, and perhaps other universes. I must discover the secrets of this power—the light of creation itself—which might allow me to continue my journey through the multiverse."

"She's wasting our time," Mhynt said, brandishing her blade without hesitation. "Step aside. You have ten seconds."

"Thank you for your offer of an additional ten seconds of stalling," quipped Mesoza, possibly in sincerity. "But I believe the time has come to engage in combat. I must warn you—while I would prefer not to endanger your lives, I am quite capable of inflicting grievous injury."

The Koraidon widened her stance, lowered her head, and loosed a primal roar from her jaws.

"Activate the Rift-Breacher!"

Behind her, a crew of Covenant pokémon punched in a final command to the machine they'd been calibrating. The mesatop seemed to shudder, and the light of day grew more vivid – red and gold, honey and rust...

The portal – the dungeonmouth – had not been there a moment ago. Yet there it now lay... A pair of natural stone pillars jutting from the plateau, between which the air shimmered and sparkled with motes of light. Already, personnel were running through the gateway...

Betel. Give us key targets. Perhaps a stern, guiding voice would help get their Mission Control to refocus. This is a complex operation and we need guidance so any delicate work doesn't disrupt the nearby Dungeon.

Understood, Mhynt. One moment.

4 Primary Units recommended to enter the Sun's Rest.
2 Primary Units recommended to battle Professor Mesoza.
Identifying additional objectives for Auxiliary Units...

...

Wait. Matthias is somewhere here. I detect his distinctive soul in your vicinity. Considering that some of the party ought to enter the dungeon and prevent the Living Sun's emergence, the balance of combat power may be dangerously uneven. We need reinforcements...!

I’ll keep our new pal here occupied, Gladion called out mentally.

“Your predecessor? You think you ended up stranded in Forlas with no memories because your predecessor fucked up?”

His laugh dripped with disdain. “You’re lucky to be alive, Professor. You wanna guess what fraction of the places you coulda landed even have oxygenated atmospheres?

(There was another possibility that did not occurred to Gladion, of course: That it was no coincidence she’d landed in Forlas. That she’d been able to aim. In spite of the confidence he presented his conclusions with, the one and only thing he knew about her with a high degree of confidence was that she’d had a son. As far as he knew, aiming herself towards Forlas would’ve suggested premeditation, and therefore that she’d willingly abandoning her son. His opinion of her wasn’t low enough to make that leap. Not yet, at least.)

He didn’t know whether Professor Mesoza even wanted to go through the portal, but he shot a Mean Look her way just to make sure she didn’t have the choice.

“Your so-called journey through the multiverse ends here. Offworlders put enough stress on the fabric of reality just by being here, you try ripping holes in it on purpose and Forlas is over. There’s no one who can be trusted with that kind of power.”

We need reinforcements...!

A low rumble of earth was the only warning before a dark-stone Rhydon burst up from the edge of the mesa, having built up considerable speed from the use of Rock Climb. He landed on the sandstone with a heavy thud and a wave of earth that knocked a few nearby Coven agents off their feet from the surprise attack.

At Rhydon's side, there was a sudden Teleport flash, and then a Gallade was standing there, if only for a few moments before teleporting a second time, this time reappearing on the edge of the zeppelin's metal railing. He made a leap, grabbed the aircraft's tether and swung himself in through an open window to confront whoever was within.

Back down on the mesa, a small, lithe, Dark-type shape leaped down from Rhydon's back to join the Wayfarers...!

"Mhynt, let's Teleport into the rift," Nova said, before lobbing a blast seed from his bag at the idiot brigade and their equipment.

"Well, won't this be fun." Mhynt vanished from her standing position, but not after hurling her blade toward the Professor as a distracting shot. She appeared on Nova and readied some half-practiced mobility maneuvers with him to burst into the fray.

Back down on the mesa, a small, lithe, Dark-type shape leaped down from Rhydon's back to join the Wayfarers...!

Leaping off of Flint in a flash, the weavile landed, drew her claws down her arm, and in an instant closed the distance between her and Mesoza. She ran her claws across the dragon's hide, the frayed ends of the Expert Belt around her neck fluttering as the momentum of her attack sent her skidding across the rock, until she twisted around and stopped in front of the other Wayfayers.

Isidora glanced back at them and grinned when she saw Gladion there. "Hey y'all! Long time no see!" she called. "Don't worry about firepower, we'll help handle things up here!"

"Koamaru, in the present circumstance, I am the one issuing or withholding wah wah wah blah blah blah-."
In a much less mature and levelheaded part of his brain, Koa wanted to roll his eyes and make mocking yapping motions with hands he no longer had. It was hardly as if the Sunward invited her here.

The rest of him was just in a poor mood ever since the Tyrrier expedition. 'I make the rules up because I want it'. Just like every other despicable thieving criminal megalomaniac. How dare she call herself a professor? Attacking and planning to steal away Amida's power. To rip more holes in the fabric of this world. All to what? Traipse through the multiverse and sightsee?

"And what if we disagree?"

Her roar was all the answer he needed.

Good. He was getting tired of talking. Falling into familiarity, he started to draw on his electricity to prepare and-

...Wait was that Isidora? And the Vanguard...

Huh. Not expected but at least for now they had the same goal. Definitely not unwelcome. "Nice one! Glad to have you," he called to Isidora. And he meant it.

Shiny, reflective suits, that made sense... most of the grunts looking to cower behind the lizard lady, so probably easy enough to take out quickly if it came to it... Leaf tried to edge just a bit closer to the crate with the door, see if anything could be made out inside—

random lizard lady said:
"We are ... here to retrieve the entity known as the Living Sun, and obtain the exotic elemental energy it emits."

'Retrieve'... 'it'?

Don't get distracted. Focus on the crates; they could be important.

gargantuan piece of actual trash lizard bitch said:
"I must discover the secrets of this power—the light of creation itself—which might allow me to continue my journey through the multiverse."

Nope. Officially distracted. Recon over. She was going to say something.

"She's a person!" she shouted, rounding on the 'professor' and the goons racing for the dungeon, radiant heat like lightning crackling under her skin. "You don't get to abduct a person for your own selfish experiments. You're done here."

Wait, don't follow them, you don't know what's down there—

Not a clue. She also didn't care. Leaf charged for the portal, faster than the eye could follow, and if she left a couple hoof-shaped dents in any computers or Coven grunts or cartoonishly stupid mad science lizards on the way, then good.

Hitching a ride up to the top was the easy part, Kimiko reminded herself as she dropped back down to solid ground, far above the base of the mountain she'd stood at previously. It was with only mild surprise, then, that someone had beaten them there. Kimiko did not recognize the species either, nor did any of her teammates, it seemed. Nor did her name sound familiar. She claimed to have the power of a legendary, however... Kimiko was no expert on them, so this may very well be a legendary species somewhere. But that didn't matter; the team fought legendaries and won already, so why would this be any different?

"She's wasting our time," Mhynt said, brandishing her blade without hesitation. "Step aside. You have ten seconds."
"Koamaru, in the present circumstance, I am the one issuing or withholding permission."

Kimiko found herself agreeing with Mhynt and Koa. "And I'm sure the soldiers down in the fort would corroborate that, then?" she scoffed with a frown. "Who are you to decide you get to study and experiment on another living being without their consent? And you call yourself a professor? Disgusting. You're not taking anything except a trip back where you came from."

The surprise arrival of the Vanguard couldn't have been timed better, although Kimiko grumbled about their method; the rapid appearance of several reinforcements had set off alarm bells until Isidora was in sight. She caught sight of a familiar gallade leaping up into the airship itself - good, that'll take away an easy avenue of escape.

Some of the Wayfarers had already launched attacks themselves, and charged for the mysterious portal, but Kimiko couldn't help herself. "If you're having any second thoughts, now's your chance to withdraw. We won't give you another one."

[Ch08 Finale] ~ VS Professor Mesoza New
Leaf tried to edge just a bit closer to the crate with the door, see if anything could be made out inside—

Just faintly, the barest hint of two orange lights...

Then 'mon were shouting over each other at the Koraidon, the portal activated, and there was no time left for this—!

“Your predecessor? You think you ended up stranded in Forlas with no memories because your predecessor fucked up?

“His laugh dripped with disdain. “You’re lucky to be alive, Professor. You wanna guess what fraction of the places you coulda landed even have oxygenated atmospheres?

Mesoza had already made her challenge, and with reinforcements jumping in and opportunistic attacks flying, she couldn't possibly respond to the Wayfarers before combat kicked off. There was a flash of befuddled curiosity at some of what was said, as if it didn't make sense to her – (Given she was a Faller with limited memory of her previous existence, perhaps she had meant something else by predecessor?) (Was the idea that a source of Radiance burning within a dungeon for five millennia could be a person a novel idea for her?) – but something in all the chaos stood out to her.

"Stress on the fabric of reality... Is that so...?" she murmured to herself, a draconic rumble reverberating in her throat.

Then her eyes narrowed, as Wayfarer attacks came for her—

At Rhydon's side, there was a sudden Teleport flash, and then a Gallade was standing there, if only for a few moments before teleporting a second time, this time reappearing on the edge of the zeppelin's metal railing. He made a leap, grabbed the aircraft's tether and swung himself in through an open window to confront whoever was within.
She ran her claws across the dragon's hide
Nova lobbed a blast seed from his bag at the idiot brigade and their equipment.
Mhynt vanished from her standing position, but not after hurling her blade toward the Professor as a distracting shot.

Perhaps prioritising the equipment, Mesoza reached out a clawed hand and grasped the blast seed, which detonated like gunpowder in her fist. The other strikes scored her hide, but it would take far, far more than that to take her down. She grunted at the pain, then parted her jaws to attack...

Professor Mesoza initiated a battle!

Mesoza's Vitality! The mesa became lit up by Scorching Weather! Mesoza got +2 Atk/Def/Spd! Mesoza became Healthy!

Leaf had already disappeared into the portal, but her thoughts carried briefly across Betel's network:

[Guys? There's something in that crate with the door. Two orange lights. Didn't have time to make out more than that. But I don't think you'd put a see-through door on a crate unless you needed to see in to check on it... or maybe if something needed to see out?]

Gladion's eyes lit up as Isidora had burst in. He'd missed her, while she was off doing her own thing. He waved to her, but didn't have time to give her his full attention. There would be time for talking later. Things were heating up real quick, so he’d better get ready. Better pick the right memory first try, or he might be left scrambling with inadequate defences.

Sitting under the moonlight with Lillie, it felt like anything could be possible. That the negative space at the edge of the waking world could be filled in by their collective imagination. Lillie had been more of a fairy-tale girl than he’d ever been, but in those moments it was hard not to share in her feelings. To step into a world where anything could happen for a moment. Maybe there was more than just cover of darkness justifying the way that, when the time came to make a break for it, he had done so by moonlight. The sun burned away dreams in favour of practical realities of little worth, but moonlight could promise you anything.

Gladion felt a rush of blood to the head, either from his newly fairy-type cells kicking on whatever countermeasures were necessary to protect themselves from the iron in his blood or from the hit of Radiance he took on to protect himself from the Coven’s own.

“Of course it’ll damage Forlas! It still hasn’t recovered from the damage Amida did before getting sealed here in the first place.” His voice lilted as his radiance levels grew. “So why didn’t— why don’t you—”

Electricity sparked on his tongue. He circled Mesoza and buried his beak in her flank. It was like taking a sip of water to buy more time to think of what to say next, but with violence instead of water.

Why do all this? So that you can hop to another world and, what, do it again? That sounds lonely. Don’t you have anyone you care about?

He didn’t get it. There were people back home he cared about, and people on Forlas he cared about, and it hurt his heart to think about the divide too hard. It would be so much easier to just stick to one world and care about it. If she remembered her home then he’d be able to make sense of it, but she didn’t, so why?

A wolfish grin spread across Koa's jaws when he saw the protect orbs activate around the equipment. So you want to protect those, huh? Are they important? What was it Kitto said? 'Let your anger fuel your fists, not your mind'? Yeah, he could do that. This was a strategic choice (and maybe one that just happened to also sound satisfying).

Let the team handle the professor wannabe.

With a howl, he took off, bounding across the mesa. Those relay stations looked important enough. With the familiarity of a trainer and the ease of practice, he shattered his terrain orb, charging the mesa around him and the relay station.

Then, with lightning charged fists he streaked toward the nearest relay and laid into it. A couple strikes to soften the shield, then rip everything up and fry it.

Koa used Thunder Barrage!

Her mind was all over the place from the start. Wondering if she should have been with the infiltration; was she stupid to have just informed Nolan and follow the group to the mesa to protect the goddess? Wondering if she should have followed Steven to the fort. She was worried about him being down there by himself—not that he couldn’t handle himself because he was strong and capable and—but leaving with him would have left Koa alone, and she’d been worried about him since their encounter with that stupid fuckass bird. Plus, Kimiko, and Gladion—

At the end of the day, it didn’t matter. Mesozoa was on them, and they had to act. She could worry some more when they were done protecting the giant moth from these greedy little armies.

Jawile’s chains were barely off before they were violently snapping. Even Jawile II and II were eager with their snapping.

“Wouldn’t it be super attractive if we killed the koraidon and successfully thwarted the Covenant all by ourselves? No lizard or robot could resist that.”

“…resist that!”

If there were ever a time she wished she was dead, it was now. She used that energy to propel her sprint for Mesozoa.

As if the natural warmth weren't enough, Mesoza's response had been to make it worse in her preparation for battle. Kimiko sighed, but she supposed this was to be expected, given that they had tried to get the jump on the professor. It was still disappointing that she wouldn't have a chance to reconsider her position, but they'd now crossed beyond that point.

Although Kimiko normally enjoyed the warm weather, during battle it could only mean one thing; fire. She'd have to watch out for that. Gladion seemed to have the idea to charge himself up right away... maybe she could copy that, too.

With everyone else charging forwards, either to attack the professor herself or the equipment around the area, Kimiko launched herself into support mode. Some grass would help keep everyone energized, and some harnessed energy from a boosted barrage of leaves to do some damage and more for later. And then... what better way to try out her special skill than by infusing it with light?

"You wanna study Radiance?" she sneered at the professor, eyes lighting up with energy. "We'll show you what it can do!"

A glowing energy seed burst from her terrain to snake itself around Mesoza, an effort to sap her energy as well as keep her from recovering it. With her ability to control where that energy went through her field, Kimiko would direct it towards Gladion; being in close proximity, he would likely be the one who'd need it most.

Isidora brought a claw up to her forehead as the sun shone brighter and hotter than it did before. Really missing my hat now, but no big deal. If what Betel's network was saying about the weird dragon was true (She looks almost like a cyclizar), engaging her in direct combat was a risky maneuver. It was a lucky thing this battle wasn't necessarily about defeating her. She stole a glance at the airship. I wonder how Valere's holding up.

Gladion was putting in the work to keep the dragon's focus on him. But with how protective Mesoza seemed over her equipment, Isidora had a hunch that her attention was soon about to shift pretty dramatically regardless. With allies already at work attempting to dismantle it -- Need to make the most of this chance while we still have it, and swap tactics if she prioritizes the saboteurs.

Ice overtook her claws as she panted from the heat, and she ran into a position where she could twist around and throw two Ice Shards in different directions. One at Mesoza to make her life harder, and the other at the Rift-Mender-Breacher-Whatever machine to break its Protect shield and enable Odette to do as much as she could.
