The sun bakes down on a flat, open stretch of ground populated only by cacti and skittering things with more legs than one cares to think about. Now and then, one of the cacti gets up and ambles about a bit, but for the most part things are still and lonely. Even spiky plants with too much gumption for their own good aren't inclined to get around much with the sun blaring at them on its highest setting.
It's unusual, therefore, for a human to be roaming through the Westersand, and stranger still for them to be there of their own free will. Gakidou seems quite unperturbed by the strange setting as she trudges along, feet sending up puffs of parched dust as she makes her way across the empty land. At last she stops in a place indistinguishable from the miles of dirt around it and proceeds to wait, periodically wiping sweat for her brow.
Fortunately, she's not long left standing alone in the middle of the wastes; Blastoise428 approaches from the same direction that she came, though he's considerably more unnerved by his surroundings. He goes so far as to jump as a nearby cactus suddenly decides that it would like to go for a stroll and sets off quite casually towards the horizon. Clearly, this is not a place with which he is much familiar. He hurries over to Gakidou, and the two trainers engage in conversation for a while, both of them suffering in the heat. After a few mintues, a shadow swoops over them, an aerodactyl winging down out of the sky to land at a spot nearby, the prehistoric pokémon's narrow wings whipping up great clouds of dust.
The referee slides off her pokémon's back, dressed for the weather in a broad-brimmed hat and very obviously smeared with sunscreen. "Right, both present and accounted for?" she asks, tapping a pen against her clipboard and looking between the two battlers. "Let's get this over with, then. I hope you guys brought your own water bottle, 'cause if you dehydrate and pass out or something, it's a forfeit on your part. Okay! Choose your pokémon."
The trainers split up and put a bit of distance between them before turning around and tossing their pokéballs into the arena. On Gakidou's side of the field appears Puddle the mudkip, who looks around at his desert surroundings with clear displeasure. He is, after all, a water-type, and this place looks all too eager to suck him dry. Blastoise428, on the other hand, chooses the ground-type nincada, which is far less perturbed. The bug taps his claws against the earth a couple of times, then brings them to bear, ready to fight. At the ref's signal, the trainers begin shouting their orders and the pokémon tense, preparing for battle.
Round One
Gakidou (OOO)
Puddle (M)
Health: 100%
Energy: 100%
- Doesn't like the looks of this place.
Blastoise428 (OOO)
Shino (M)
Health: 100%
Energy: 100%
- More or less at home.
Puddle braces his feet and stares Shino straight in the face--
just try it, his expression says. A brown aura ripples out from his body as he calls on all his powers of endurance, ready to take whatever the nincada can throw at him. Shino stares at this display of determination without much interest, his antennae twitching a couple of times. Then his faceted eyes light up like spotlights, their glare outstripping even the harsh sun reflecting off the hard-packed earth. Puddle, of course, is caught looking straight into the nincada's face, and even locked into his bide, he twitches, eyes watering as he blinks. Dark spots cloud his vision even as the brief glow dies out of his opponent's eyes, but the aura continues to rage around him--it will take more than that to break his bide.
As Puddle looks on as best he can, Shino begins scratching at the hard earth, scraping up dust and flinging it into the air. His tiny wings beat furiously, doing nothing to lift him from the ground and hardly creating any wind but, though Puddle doesn't know it, signifying the beginning of an attack. Soon a cloud of loose grit blocks the bug from view, and a wind is starting to stir across the parched land, whipping still more dust up off the ground. The cloud of dirt grows bigger, balooning beyond all reasonable proportions, and the force of the wind only increases, until all Puddle can see is swirling gray dust and all that he can hear is the howling of the wind. Fine grit stings his moist skin as it is swept along, and despite himself the mudkip shivers a bit. As if the wasteland wasn't bad enough before.
Fortunately, it's now his turn to attack. Letting out a gurgling cry, Puddle forces the energy he's gathered outward, sending a ring of energy shooting away in all directions. The line of energy passes over Shino, but the nincada hardly notices. Without any pain to fuel it, the bide attack does no more than tickle. Put out for only a moment, Shino begins his next attack. His wings sputter and vibrate, flapping faster and faster until a high-pitched whine pierces the air, carrying even over the roaring sandstorm winds. It gets under Puddle's skin and vibrates in his teeth, growing more and more insistent until it feels like his eardrums might pop with the strain of listening to it. Puddle lowers his head and tries to ignore it, but the bug buzz only continues, until at last Shino can keep it up no longer. Even after the awful noise fades, Puddle finds himself with a lingering headache, and the sandblasting he's receiving doesn't improve his mood, either.
Gakidou (OOO)
Puddle (M)
Health: 88%
Energy: 97%
- Grumpy. Has a mild headache. -1 Accuracy
Blastoise428 (OOO)
Shino (M)
Health: 100%
Energy: 88%
- In excellent shape.
Terrain Notes
A vicious sandstorm sweeps through the arena (16 more actions).
Final Notes
- Bide takes three actions to execute, so once Puddle began it, he could not use any of his other commands.
- Damage from bug buzz was slightly reduced because it was hard to hear over the roaring wind.
- Gakidou attacks first next round.
