Arena: The Westersand

The Westersand is a desert to the west of Dalmasca, where there is an occasional sandstorm. The westersand is dotted with living cacti -as in, actually moving around, breathing, etc.- and other bizzare creatures. The sun here is intense and the sand is scorching hot. Ground and fire attacks are increased by 4% while water and grass attacks are decreased by 2%. The moves Sandstorm and Sunny Day lasts 2 times longer then usual. Rain Dance cannot be used in this arena.

Other: First stage or Pre-evolved only.

Umm, go... *looks around and at pokéball belt* Shino, my nincada.

We're going to use move that assault his senses.
Use Flash. Then, while he's blinded, use a Sandstorm, followed by a Bug Buzz. If he uses a Water move at any point, replace your move with Giga Drain.

Flash/Giga Drain~Sandstorm/Giga Drain~Bug Buzz/Giga Drain

Okay then, Puddle! I want you to start with bide, then attack with a water gun, getting him to use giga drain. Then, I want you to use a Mud-slap to lower his accuracy.

Bide~Water gun~Mud-slap

(Shino...what a cool name xDD)

The sun bakes down on a flat, open stretch of ground populated only by cacti and skittering things with more legs than one cares to think about. Now and then, one of the cacti gets up and ambles about a bit, but for the most part things are still and lonely. Even spiky plants with too much gumption for their own good aren't inclined to get around much with the sun blaring at them on its highest setting.

It's unusual, therefore, for a human to be roaming through the Westersand, and stranger still for them to be there of their own free will. Gakidou seems quite unperturbed by the strange setting as she trudges along, feet sending up puffs of parched dust as she makes her way across the empty land. At last she stops in a place indistinguishable from the miles of dirt around it and proceeds to wait, periodically wiping sweat for her brow.

Fortunately, she's not long left standing alone in the middle of the wastes; Blastoise428 approaches from the same direction that she came, though he's considerably more unnerved by his surroundings. He goes so far as to jump as a nearby cactus suddenly decides that it would like to go for a stroll and sets off quite casually towards the horizon. Clearly, this is not a place with which he is much familiar. He hurries over to Gakidou, and the two trainers engage in conversation for a while, both of them suffering in the heat. After a few mintues, a shadow swoops over them, an aerodactyl winging down out of the sky to land at a spot nearby, the prehistoric pokémon's narrow wings whipping up great clouds of dust.

The referee slides off her pokémon's back, dressed for the weather in a broad-brimmed hat and very obviously smeared with sunscreen. "Right, both present and accounted for?" she asks, tapping a pen against her clipboard and looking between the two battlers. "Let's get this over with, then. I hope you guys brought your own water bottle, 'cause if you dehydrate and pass out or something, it's a forfeit on your part. Okay! Choose your pokémon."

The trainers split up and put a bit of distance between them before turning around and tossing their pokéballs into the arena. On Gakidou's side of the field appears Puddle the mudkip, who looks around at his desert surroundings with clear displeasure. He is, after all, a water-type, and this place looks all too eager to suck him dry. Blastoise428, on the other hand, chooses the ground-type nincada, which is far less perturbed. The bug taps his claws against the earth a couple of times, then brings them to bear, ready to fight. At the ref's signal, the trainers begin shouting their orders and the pokémon tense, preparing for battle.

Puddle braces his feet and stares Shino straight in the face--just try it, his expression says. A brown aura ripples out from his body as he calls on all his powers of endurance, ready to take whatever the nincada can throw at him. Shino stares at this display of determination without much interest, his antennae twitching a couple of times. Then his faceted eyes light up like spotlights, their glare outstripping even the harsh sun reflecting off the hard-packed earth. Puddle, of course, is caught looking straight into the nincada's face, and even locked into his bide, he twitches, eyes watering as he blinks. Dark spots cloud his vision even as the brief glow dies out of his opponent's eyes, but the aura continues to rage around him--it will take more than that to break his bide.

As Puddle looks on as best he can, Shino begins scratching at the hard earth, scraping up dust and flinging it into the air. His tiny wings beat furiously, doing nothing to lift him from the ground and hardly creating any wind but, though Puddle doesn't know it, signifying the beginning of an attack. Soon a cloud of loose grit blocks the bug from view, and a wind is starting to stir across the parched land, whipping still more dust up off the ground. The cloud of dirt grows bigger, balooning beyond all reasonable proportions, and the force of the wind only increases, until all Puddle can see is swirling gray dust and all that he can hear is the howling of the wind. Fine grit stings his moist skin as it is swept along, and despite himself the mudkip shivers a bit. As if the wasteland wasn't bad enough before.

Fortunately, it's now his turn to attack. Letting out a gurgling cry, Puddle forces the energy he's gathered outward, sending a ring of energy shooting away in all directions. The line of energy passes over Shino, but the nincada hardly notices. Without any pain to fuel it, the bide attack does no more than tickle. Put out for only a moment, Shino begins his next attack. His wings sputter and vibrate, flapping faster and faster until a high-pitched whine pierces the air, carrying even over the roaring sandstorm winds. It gets under Puddle's skin and vibrates in his teeth, growing more and more insistent until it feels like his eardrums might pop with the strain of listening to it. Puddle lowers his head and tries to ignore it, but the bug buzz only continues, until at last Shino can keep it up no longer. Even after the awful noise fades, Puddle finds himself with a lingering headache, and the sandblasting he's receiving doesn't improve his mood, either.

Okay then. Try starting with a Growl, then use an Ice Ball, after that, use a Water Gun.

(Negrek, I have a question...Can we use any move that our pokemon can learn as long as it's not a tutoring or TM move? If this was covered in the rules, then I'm sorry x_X)

You can use any move in your pokémon's movepool, including level-up, egg, TM, HM, and even special event moves from the PokéCenter or XD:GoD.

Okay, Shino, I just remembered that Ground-type moves get a boost here, so let's continue with our Destroy His Senses And His Confidence plan.

Try using Mud-Slap, and go ahead and aim first, speed isn't important this action.

Then use a Night Slash combined with an X-Scissor attack.

Screwing up his face with determination, Puddle squints against the sandstorm and draws in a deep breath. It's hard to muster a lot of menace in his presence state, but the mudkip does an admirable job and manages a low, reverberating growl that sounds even through the hissing winds of the sandstorm. Shino pauses for a moment, his antennae twitching. He's not really sure he wants to tangle with something that sounds like it would be more than happy to rip off his limbs and feed them to him one by one, but for the moment he's going to have to tough it out. There appears to be no immediate danger, and he's got more pressing matters to worry about anyway. Namely, how he's supposed to manage a mud-slap in the middle of a desert. Surely no mud presents itself, and not having Puddle's built-in hydration engine, he can't simply whip up a batch. At a loss for what else to do, the nincada proceeds to scrape away at the sand beneath his feet, shoveling a steady spray into the air. The roaring winds of sandstorm only sweep the sand up and add it to their fury, though, and Puddle doesn't notice a thing.

Instead, the mudkip drastically reduces his metabolism, dropping his body temperature to exceptionally low levels as he curls into a tight ball. Spewing a burst of icy water from his mouth, he coats himself in a thin layer of ice, then starts to roll forward. Considering that his sight, already hampered by the sandstorm and flash, is further decreased by the fact that he's rolling at his target, it's amazing that Puddle even manages to take off in the direction of his opponent. This he manages, though, and even if he doesn't quite manage a head-on strike, he at least manages to clip Shino's side as he rumbles past, leaving a couple small patches of ice on the nincada's spindly legs where he rolled over them.

Shino hisses, completely unprepared for an icy mudkip to come rolling out of the sandstorm and slam into his side. The blow was hardly powerful, though, and the nincada recovers quickly. Puddle's already stopped his attack and begun to uncurl, and Shino intends to strike before the mudkip can go on the offense again. Flexing his limbs to shatter the ice on the right ones, the nincada then scrambles over to his opponent, gathering dark energy in his claws. Though Puddle's back is turned to Shino, his radar-fin picks up the approaching nincada. Turning to face the bug turns out to be a mistake, though; Puddle finds Shino reared up on his hind set of legs, large foreclaws raised high and sparking with black energy. Before the mudkip has the time to dodge, the claws come slashing down in a crosswise slice, ripping a bleeding X into Puddle's face. Puddle closes his eyes and shrieks, his face throbbing as the dark energy eats deep into his flesh, worsening what are already savage wounds. Satsified, Shino backs up a bit, absently cleaning his claws in the sand. His head still burning, with the sandstorm blasting sand into his wounds, Puddle opens his eyes a crack, doing his best to sight his opponent through the curtain of drifting sand. It's a miracle he manages to summon up a respectable water gun through the pain, and more surprising still that he actually manages to hit his opponent with it, but though Shino hisses and scurries away as the thin jet of water splashes against his side, he's still looking far better than his unfortunate opponent.

Shino twitches his feelers upon hearing his command; he's quite enjoying the sandstorm, and better yet, he knows that Puddle isn't. Still, the mudkip isn't going to enjoy the heat of an intensified desert sun, either. The air is still warm, despite the clouds of sand blocking out the sun, and Shino has no trouble conjuring up fiery thoughts. The nincada's thick digging claws glow orange as he raises them, releasing a bolt of energy into the sky. It cuts through the swirling sands and the dark clouds overhead, scattering the sandstorm before bursting into full life far overhead, greatly increasing the intensity of the sunlight burning down on the arena.

The already respectable temperature takes a considerable jump, and Puddle lets out an unhappy gurgle as the heat scorches his sand-crusted skin. Fortunately, he knows just the way to cool things down a bit. With a brief squint at the sun overhead, the mudkip recalls the steps to an ancient dance passed down from generation to generation to call down the rains in dry times--or just when it was freakin' hot out in the middle of the desert. As the mudkip starts to skip and twirl around on the sand, an indignant tone sounds from what looks like a wiimote hanging from the referee's belt. "Yeah, sure," she grumbles as she takes the device up and points it at the dancing mudkip, whose eyes widen for a second as though he's been given a shock before he drops back to the sand. "No rain dance in this arena," the ref says as she returns the device to her side, then waves a lethargic hand at the pokémon. "Carry on and stuff."

Grimacing with embarrassment, Puddle glares across at Shino. He knows the nincada must be enjoying his humiliation immensely, and indeed, a glance across at the bug finds him tapping his claws and twitching his antennae in a most obnoxious way. If the bug thinks Puddle's going to let that go unpunished, hes got another thing coming. Dredging water from his inner reserves, the mudkip unleashes a thick blast of water at the nincada. Shino is knocked onto his back, legs flailing, and though the hydro pump's power is reduced by the desert's heat and the intensified sun, he feels the cold shock harder than anything so far this match.

Righting himself, Shino buzzes excess water off his wings and waits a moment for the sun to dry the majority of the moisture from his armor. Setting his wings abuzz again, the nincada angles the wind they generate downward, kicking up puffs of sand as it hisses towards Puddle. The mudkip winces and closes his eyes as the sand gets into his eyes and open wounds. As the nincada's wings beat ever faster, a singing noise ringing out through the air as they buzz, the wind is suffused with sparks of silver bug energy, which swirl and dance prettily but nevertheless sting like the devil when they burn out against Puddle's skin. The mudkip ducks his head and rides out the silver wind as best he can, the sand and bug energy irritating his already parched skin and only aggravating his rising irritation.

After the wind dies down, Puddle raises his head and stares at Shino, who is tapping his claws in satisfaction, then leaps forward with a bubbly warcry. Shino is taken aback as the water type slams a shoulder into him, bowling him over, then proceeds to lash out with vicious kicks, buckling the nincada's carapace and sending the confused bug rolling away across the sand. Dazed, shino lashes out with a couple of wild slashes as Puddle rushes at him again, but only one actually connects with its target, and the enraged mudkip barely notices the tiny scratch. Shino is powerless in the face of Puddle's ire, as the mudkip gets his revenge for the humiliation inflicted on him so far this match. As the mudkip's fit of anger at last plays out, Shino can only limp away, scuttling hurriedly across the sand to put a bit of distance between himself and his crazed opponent.

Okay, Puddle
Start off with Taunt, to keep it from making any power boosting or blocking moves, then follow up with Endeavor, then a Hydro Pump.

Okay, Shino, you probably don't want to get anywhere near that thing...

So Solarbeam it! But try and combine the Solarbeam with a Giga Drain. If you don't think that you can pull that off, though, use Giga Drain on your last action instead. Follow with a Frustration, focusing on the Taunting it gave you.

Puddle jeers after the retreating nincada, daring Shino to turn around and face him. Is one little attack really enough to send the bug scurrying? Honestly, what a wuss--Puddle's taken far worse than a little endeavor, and he didn't go running away, now did he? Though in considerable pain, Shino isn't cowed enough to be insensitive to the mudkip's taunting and wheels around, hissing furiously. Puddle just smirks and keeps the insults coming, though he falters a bit as the air around Shino begins to ripple more furiously than usual, as though the bug himself is releasing heat.

Puddle closes his mouth and takes a nervous step back as Shino's glittering wings start to glow a golden color, the bug's large, faceted eyes following suit. Raising his digging claws in front of his face, Shino gathers a brilliant orb of energy between them. The intense sun lends its power to the charging attack, and in no time at all the ball has grown to the size of a grapefruit and begun to sizzle ominously. Regardless of what he'd just been talking about, Puddle turns about to make a hasty retreat, just as Shino lets the solarbeam go. A thick beam of solar energy, too bright to look into, rips out over the dunes, scattering sand in all directions and toppling Puddle off his feet. The mudkip squeals as the solarbeam chars his sensitive skin, grass-type energy pummeling him mercilessly as it tips him over and so bright that it hurts his eyes even through his eyelids.

As the solarbeam dissipates and Shino lowers his claws, Puddle is left to struggle weakly in the sand, his whole body covered with what looks like a horrible sunburn, his skin cracked and peeling instead of its usual smooth, moist texture. Gritting his teeth, the mudkip forces himself back to his feet, blinking dazzled eyes around at the blinding white desert. Still fuming from the mudkip's taunt, Shino watches with some satisfaction--until Puddle comes charging straight at him.

Once again Puddle throws his all into an endeavor attack, slamming Shino to the dirt and smashing his paws against the nincada's tough carapace. This time, though, Shino isn't going to take the attack lying down. Though temporarily stunned by Puddle's attack, Shino is still hopping mad; this time, he's not going to give the mudkip any excuse to ridicule him. Lashing out with his clawed feet, the nincada succeeds in catching Puddle on the side of the face. The mudkip yelps and withdraws for a moment, putting a paw up to the bleeding scratches on the side of his face, then growls and dives in for another tackle. Shino responds, and soon the two of them are caught up in a vicious brawl, kicking up sand as they flail away at one another. Their energy slowly ebbs, and soon enough the two withdraw, panting and covered in fresh injuries. Shino looks to have gotten the worst of it, but the bug feels oddly calm, his rage spent in through the course of letting out his frustration.

Though he feels parched and hardly in the mood to be expending water in this desert wasteland, Puddle concentrates hard, tapping into his deepest reserves of water power. A huge stream of water rises up his throat and spews from his mouth, forming a thick column with all the force of a firehose. The hissing hydro pump strikes Shino dead-on, and the shining sun is cold comfort in the face of such a powerful watery blast. Shino is torn free of the sand and hurled through the air, tumbling across the sand until he at last comes to rest, shivering and damp, several feet away. Puddle closes his mouth, breathing heavily but obviously pleased with himself.

Shino's legs twitch, shaking glittering water droplets to the sand, where they vanish rapidly into the dry ground. Rolling back onto his stomach, the bug buzzes his wings a couple of time to rid himself of the last of the water, then gathers more grass energy in his front claws, their tips glowing green as he slams them to the sand. Jagged tendrils of green energy race out across the grit, seeking out some living creature to latch onto. Puddle, still partially blind, doesn't notice their approach until it is too late; green lines of power rip up out of the sand below him and encircle his body, sinking into his skin and leeching away his very energy. The mudkip howls and struggles in the grip of the giga drain attack, but it only digs in all the more mercilessly, lines of force glimmering as they transfer power back across the arena to Shino. The nincada feels a brief rush of relief from pain, but it is quickly swallowed up by the sheer magnitude of the damage he's sustained. As the giga drain fizzles out, releasing Puddle, neither pokemon is feeling good at all, though Puddle still looks significantly worse than his opponent.

Shino buzzes his wings up to full speed once more, blowing a steady, powerful stream of wind at his opponent. The gust attack pulls up sand as it goes, forming into a hissing dust devil as it crosses the arena towards Puddle. The mudkip stares it down, unafraid; an invisible bubble of pure energy keeps him insulated from the outside world and the attacks that inhabit it. The gust attack swallows him up, temporarily blocking Shino from view behind a whirling curtain of dust. The gust blows itself soon enough, though, leaving Puddle unharmed.

Unable as he was to see what went on at the center of the gust attack, Shino doesn't realize it has failed and begins his next move, secreting noxious chemicals from glands in the back of his throat and mixing them into a poisonous cocktail in his mouth. He's not fast enough at making up his toxic surprise, though; Puddle lets go of his protect and coaxes water out of his parched cells, concentrating it into a powerful blast that streams across the arena in a thick, dripping column. The hydro pump hits home with impressive force, once again sending Shino rolling across the dunes. The hot sun might take much of the watery bite out of the attack, but it cannot protect Shino from its brute-force punch. The bug is lucky not to lose his store of poisons; as soon as he rolls to a halt, the bug scrambles back to his feet and rushes at Puddle, claws scrabbling through the loose grit, and spits the toxic load all over the mudkip. Puddle squeals and desperately tries to wipe the goop off on the sand, but to little avail. The noxious chemicals irritate the mudkip's cracked skin and rapidly enter his bloodstream.

Puddle has to put on a brave face for his next attack to work, though. Taking a deep breath, the mudkip stops pawing at the poisonous goop and forces himself to ignore its awful stinging for the moment. Looking straight at Shino, the mudkip puts on a broad smirk and mocks the nincada, who is now trying to shake the water from hydro pump off his wings. Not looking so hot now, is he? He's not really going to lose to a water type in a desert, is he? How pitiful!

Shino stares at Puddle with surprise and anger, unable to believe that the beaten mudkip could really be so brash. Puddle only smirks more widely and makes rude gestures at Shino, until the nincada is hissing with rage and drumming his claws against the sand in his best display of intimidation, all thoughts of sand-attack driven from his mind.
