The barrage of replies gave Ghaspius a bit of pause. While he certainly had his own remarks to the Saint on the tip of his tongue, he couldn't help but wonder just how he'd respond to the others first.

So instead, he simply glared at the Zapdos, and began to rummage through his bag and prepare for the next strike. Perhaps there was something that he could use in conjunction with the others to slow down or fry the raging chicken.

Even after the orchard encounter, it seemed Zapdos was still full of bluster. Steven narrowed his gaze.

"As if we wouldn't come, and allow you to keep wreaking havoc on others just to get at us."

He knew what calling the Cyclone out on his hypocrisy got you, but it's what they were here for, right? Bracing himself, he spoke.

"You're making an awful lot of assumptions for a creature that acts without reason. Let's see where your strength gets you."

It seemed like the ground from east to west was far more thoroughly trampled than the rest of the surrounding...

"You wanna run? I can run," she said. The tip of her horn flashed, then cut a violet streak through the air as she broke into a gallop. "Let's play chicken."

Zapdos's wings came down. Once, twice-- then again, buffeting Steven but ultimately not doing much. For all its boasting, it sure didn't feel like power beyond anything Steven had encountered before. Either that, or the Saint only picked on the softest targets to make himself appear stronger.

No wonder he only went after Koa and Dave in the orchard. Coward.

Steven watched as Zapdos rounded to the far end of the field, readying some kind of attack. Fine then. They'd weather this, too.

"Brace yourselves!" he called out, the swell of determination flowing from him to bolster his teammates. They dove into the fray, landing blows against their foe before retreating from the line of fire.

Then with a confident nod to Aige-- "I'm counting on you. Take care of Leaf--" he turned and followed Koa and Astrid up the hill.

They had to break that shield if the others were going to get in a hit. I can do this. He sprinted across the field, shattering an orb before lunging at Zapdos, paws crackling with electricity.

He pivoted as he landed, rushing towards the hill to take cover. "Hang in there Steven!" he called. "I've got your back!"

A growl burned in his throat. "This ones for Dave."

Astrid wiped the sweat off her brow--no actually, that was blood. Her pulse roared in her temples. She couldn't take another barrage like that without falling, and the bird was too thick to drain energy from efficiently...

So this was a 'Saint'. A 'Legend'. Someone who didn't need the guidance of nuance in a lawless land. As he began to charge up something new--something fearsome--Astrid knew she could only match his strength in one burst. Not just yet, but soon.

"Take cover! I... have an idea!" she projected to the others.

She sought out Zapdos's battleheart gaze with a blank stare, wondering if he'd return eye contact as he struck her down.

Steven jolted forward as she clashed with Zapdos head-on. But the dust cleared and she was still standing-- of course she was still standing! A swell of satisfaction rushed over him, and Steven allowed himself a small fistpump in the moment. "Well done!" he called out.

But there was hardly time to celebrate, as Zapdos was upon them in an instant, legs and wings flashing. A blow left, then right, then battered from all sides by kicks; too many to count. Too many to stop.

"Koa!" That would be super effective against him, but as he turned to find the elektrike, electricity was already snapping around his pelt, determination in his eyes. He'd weathered the storm, they all had. Now it was time to strike back.

That same feeling as earlier overtook him as he regarded Koa; the will to withstand.

"Go get him!" he called as his teammates launched into the fray. He would hold the high ground, hunkered low in preparation for the retaliation he knew was coming.

Leaf stumbled to a stop at the other end of the field, breathing hard, trying to blink the stars out of her eyes. Usually when you challenge someone to a game of chicken it's because you expect them to, y'know, chicken, not be stupid and just keep going until you both crash. What mattered, of course, was that she hadn't chickened out, no matter how much stinkeye he'd been giving her. So probably it had looked really cool and brave and badass, actually, like the clash of two jousting knights or two unstoppable forces, and definitely unlike two idiots running into each other face-first.

Still a long way to go, anyway. Astrid was trying to grab Zapdos's attention; seemed as good time as any to catch her breath, grab the high ground and get ready for a really good downhill run-up. She aimed a solid headbutt at his side, just to pay back that stumble a little, and forged her way up the hill against the growing winds.

Between the furious flurry of stomps, kicks, and wingbeats, the Mismagius was having a rough time staying in the fight. A few bits of his cloth had already become tattered and torn, and the winds had flung his light body up, down, and all around as though he were a paper doll. Still, the others were putting in some wonderful teamwork to take down this force of nature.

Ghaspius chuckled, adjusting his hat as he righted himself and drifted back to the hills. He silently nodded in encouragement to Astrid, and flew towards the others taking a rest.

"Here, y'all, it ain't much, but it should help with the stinging," he said as he tried to splash them with one of his concoctions — a temporary soothing agent — though he wasn't sure if he had hit his marks given the high winds.

"Crazy idea: once Astrid's done, I could try to help one of y'all get the drop on 'em — literally."

Approaching Zapdos under these conditions would prove more difficult than before. Most notably, if one paid attention, one could see that some of the dust devils seemed to be circling close to Zapdos, as if protecting him, while the others orbited in a wavering path further away, as if ready to lash out. As Koa and Astrid closed in, Zapdos's attention snapped to them, and the innermost dust devils moved to intercept them--

It seems like the dust devils appear when he reaches certain HP amounts.

Zapdos's muscles seized up yet again, the psychic backlash from Leaf's headbutt. There was a flicker of anger in his eyes - at her? Or at himself for not thinking to intercept her?

Like Leaf before her, Astrid didn't run. She stayed put, facing the Cyclone down. Zapdos examined her curiously. Was he impressed? Just how often did anyone face him like this?

"I'm not going to hold back, you know."

Sparks coarsed over his feathers in the aftermath of the attack. But they lingered, paralysis from Koa's attack settling into his muscles.

The winds whipped into a frenzy. Something terrible was coming.

A terrible haze of dirt filled the air, kicked up by Zapdos's talons striking the earth as a horde of cyclones spilled out all around him in a violent frenzy, a nearly impenetrable wall of swirling winds.

Zapdos's Storm! Zapdos gained +1 Atk, Def, and Spd. Six dust devils formed.

Zapdos's paralysis kept him from reaching +4 Spd. His +2 Spd gave him an extra Act.

The two outermost cyclones from before began veering north, as if magnetically compelled to seek out opponents. Their master wasn't far behind, sprinting up the hill in search of his next targets.

Embracing pain never dulls it. The first kick shattered Astrid's balance; the second ripped the wind out of her lungs; the third yanked a curtain of darkness across her brain. The force was so great that she bounced straight off the ground, into the air a few feet, and limp again to the prickly savannah grass. Sparks flew across her back that she couldn't yet feel.

Revival proceeded as normal, but for the second time today, her intrigue was gone. Her eyes were wide, frantic, manic. The damage the others took registered. She'd bought them precious time and it still wasn't enough.

Worse, the winds... they whipped up with a frenzy, forming an alley of twisters to ward away their next assault. Astrid heaved a curse under her breath as her adrenaline spiked. A dozen ideas pushed through the haze, but only one truly resonated with her.

"Hey!" Astrid roared.

Instinct took over. She rocketed forward, trickles of Radiance bursting from her paws. Inertia... meant nothing to her.

"Stop talking like..."

She couldn't hold her flight yet, but she didn't need to. She just needed to launch.

"...you know us!"

The distant sounds of the battle and the hazy images of his teammates swam into focus. His body spasmed, and he coughed, spitting up sand and grit. Bitter fury and determination gave him an extra spark of strength as he staggered back to his paws, trying to blink away the doubles of Zapdos.

Never in his life had he felt such deep, burning disdain towards a legendary. Not that this Zapdos counted as one.

"Fine," he panted. Forget berries, forget hanging back to heal. He was going to beat this birds beak into the dust.

"Hey birdbrain! Stop cowering behind some dirt and face us!" Just as he was about to spring down from the hill, he spotted a familiar wispy body. Ghapius-?

A second later his paws left the ground and he was soaring through the air, riding the winds with Ghaspius. "Ha! Thanks for the ride!" When Ghapius tossed him through the air, he was ready. He let instinct take over and threw his paws as soon as he was in range.

The headstrong gaze in Koa's eyes had been obvious even to an airhead like Ghaspius. For the briefest of moments, he swore he saw a Shinx in place of the Electrike, and just like her, this one was about to charge face-first into danger. With a harsh blink, the vision faded as he shook his head. This time, he'd do the right thing.

He grabbed onto Koa with a tassel and said, "I'll fly ya right through those windy thangs, hang on tight!" Not waiting for a response, the Mismagius mustered up as much strength as he could as he lifted Koa into the air and hoisted him through the field. If there was one advantage to being as light as his species was, it was that Ghaspius knew how to navigate the winds.

It took a lot of careful manuevering and even a few close calls and nicks, but eventually, he pushed through the dust devils and let go, shouting, "Give 'em all ya got!"
