Grammar Help?

Overdosing on placebos
I'm writing an essay in my English class about the similarities between Joseph Palmer and Whitman, Emerson and Thoreau.

In the essay, I have the following sentence:
Ralph Waldo Emerson and Joseph Palmer are similar because neither would allow another to control their beliefs or actions.

I was wondering if anyone here could help me re-word this in a way that the word 'their' isn't as ambiguous. I'm referring to Emerson and Palmer, but it sounds that I could be referring to 'another.'

Thanks in advance!

What do you have against Greg Lake?

"Ralph Waldo Emerson and Joseph Palmer are similar because neither would let their beliefs or actions be influenced by others." Does that work?
