In Progress Haku and Moonwing - A Soul Split In Two

Darksong

Back in action!
This fanfiction is based off of Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, but there is no knowledge of the game required to understand. The only thing you need to know is about the Incarnus. The Incarnus is a legendary monster that, as its name suggests, is reincarnated when the entrance to the Dark World opens. Its mission: close the entrance with the power of the Mark. Its form depends on where it is. If the hills are grassy and there are cliffs present, it becomes a majestic white wolf. When the terrain is bumpy and hard, the Incarnus is born as a red-feathered hawk. If it is born in a forest, the Incarnus is a large ape. But that leaves water, which is where this Incarnus is born.

Prologue - The Dividing

Ominous clouds shielded the night sky from view. The air was as turbulent as the sea, and made one's hair stand on end. Somewhere in the distance, a black part of the sky was opening, as if the entrance to a cave. This was not a good sign.

On a small ledge on the cliff above the sea lay something mysterious. It was a glowing light, pulsating with a changing aura. The light became silver, then yellow, then black, then red, and finally, blue before becoming silver again. But for some reason, it stayed blue longer than the time it stayed on the other colors put together. The light began to expand, becoming the aqua blue that it seemed to prefer.

However, dark waves of something flying began to swallow the horizon. They were getting closer and closer. These things were like animals, but not quite. They had no one form, and they only talked with metallic groans that seemed to say, "There it is! Capture the soul!" "It's so close this time... hehehe..."

The winged figures began to close in on the light, as if oblivious to the lightning that was beginning to form in the clouds. All of a sudden, as they began to rise with the light in their hands, it was as if they were struck with the illumination, but not the spark itself. The spark headed straight through the light, as if splitting in two, and both sides faded, disappearing into nothing. As the dark hole in the sky became larger, it seemed to throw things out of whack. The ocean became more crazy, consuming the falling shadows that stained the water an oily black.

Chapter 1 - The Isle

In this place, it was calm. The grass around the pond was slathered with fresh water. However, the air was warm, and gnats above the water began to fly away as the sun began to rise. The light-colored pond was hardly moving, but the fish inside it were curious at the strange, aqua-colored light that was floating in it. As the light began to expand, the koi all darted into the corners of the pond that had been dark but were now being illuminated. And immediately, the light began to take shape, becoming what looked like a wasp standing up. However, it became less like a wasp as it became solid. Now what used to be a light looked like an ocean blue dragon, with gold and amethyst-colored armor on its head, torso, legs, and the base of its tail. Its narrow eyes were sea green, half-closed as it began to wake up. The dragon had spines along its back and tail. Its strong shoulders supported large, bat-like wings. Two obsidian horns were on each side of its head. Finally, its build made it look highly feminine.

She began to float in the water, bobbing up and down. Where is this...?

Startling the fish even more, she suddenly jetted out of the clear pond, heading into the air as if she were going to slash the clouds. Luckily, there were no humans out; if she drew attention to herself, that could be dangerous. There were many people wanting to harness the power of the Incarnus.

How did I know that? I am the Incarnus? she asked herself. Sighing, she sat perched on a nearby stone arch that stretched over a stone ramp. On the arch, there was a pattern carved, like the bud of a rose yet to open.

What is my name?

I am the Incarnus.

With that thought, she began to shiver, and as she looked down at herself, her left side was beginning to turn black. What is this?!

It only stayed like that for a moment, for then the left half of her body began to pulsate with an eerie purple aura.

"What am I!" She cried, again unsure of herself, hopefully not waking anyone. Swinging her thick tail angrily, she began to fly out over the ocean, towards the sunrise. Something pulled her in that direction, and she passed over many buildings, including one with a glowing design on the front. The last thing she flew above was a jetty, because after that, there was only water for a long way.

Gliding on the warm thermals, she hardly had to flap her large wings. She held her claws close to her body, in order to be as aerodynamic as possible. The dragon soared like an airplane, quickly making her way to a mountainous isle in the distance. All the grass was dead, and the path was trampled sand. There were few buildings here, and she was unsure whether she should land here. But there was nowhere else, and finally, the aqua-colored dragon touched her feet to the soft, dry ground, giving a small grunt. There were hardly any humans, luckily, and what looked like a small podium stood at the base of a cliff. She could see an armored skeleton with a sword up on that cliff. What is... that thing?

It gazed down at her with its empty eye sockets, cracked skull bobbing up and down in a way that made it look humorous. However, the dragon knew that it was somehow dangerous.

Suddenly, it leaped off of the small cliff, using its broadsword to balance itself, and charged at her. The dragon flew up out of the way and sent a small blast of water towards it. It was knocked back, but quickly got up again, with an odd light circling it. What is it casting now? she thought. But the ground turned black below her, explaining it. Dim? Her magic wouldn't be as strong now. Quickly, she attacked it with her claws, darting left and right. The armored skeleton disappeared in a flood of blue light.

As she looked up at the sky behind her, she saw how the silver light from the fading moon shone off of her scales.

From now on, I am... Moonwing.

Chapter 2 - The Other Half

It was the exact opposite of Infern Isle. Infant Isle was actually right next to where Moonwing had been born, and she could have flown right there, but she had taken a wrong turn. She hadn't known what the black half of her meant. All would be explained in time.

Infant Isle had a lot of grass and cliffs, including a cave that had unique monsters, and a shrine at the top of the cliffs. But the most spectacular feature was the large waterfall, that took two drops, one of which was very long, before finally reaching the ground near one of the only two buildings. This building was built into the side of one cliff, near the sandy, flat shore, and had the same glowing design as the one on the isle on which Moonwing had been born. At the bottom of the last waterfall was a small stream that made its way towards the ocean, which was definitely nearby.

In the shelter of the larger waterfall, which was higher up on the cliffs, was the same blue creature that Moonwing had been. But this creature did not consciously know of Moonwing. However, it was somehow linked to her.

This was the same dragon, that looked almost identical. Except, this one had white claws, not black.

He sat clinging to the cliff just behind the waterfall, where no one was sure to see him. However, his claws were getting tired; he would have to let go soon.

There was a startling screech, and he twisted his head to look up at the sky behind him. There was a raptor that looked like a bald eagle -- except purple instead of brown -- heading straight for the wall, claws outstretched. Or maybe, it was heading for him.

Alarmed, the white-clawed dragon let go of the wall, doing a loop before taking flight. The eagle turned just in time to avoid smashing into the wall; it had somehow resisted the force of the water coming down on it.

Quickly, the dragon used his instincts. As he murmured something even he didn't understand, a light began to surround him, then was carried towards the eagle. The eagle faltered in flight but was otherwise not affected, and dived at its enemy with talons forward.

He tried to dodge, but blood was already welling up on his arm; that could be a problem. Carefully, he flapped harder, casting some other spell that caused a spout of water to come directly out of the waterfall, barely avoiding him and hitting the eagle square in the chest. With another squawk, the eagle fell for a moment, and then proceeded to slash again, this time foolishly hitting the armor on its opponent's chest.

The dragon had to act fast. He hastily froze some of the waterfall and sent the icicles flying at the eagle. The wild enemy weakened again, and seemed to be hanging on by a little bit.

He was distracted by satisfaction. Taking its chance, the bird began to slash at the back of his shoulder, clawing the base of one wing. Unable to fly with only one wing, the dragon began to fall back into the water, landing with hardly a splash.

As soon as he saw the avian fly away, the dragon focused on himself, using the water around him to begin to heal his wounds. His right wing was badly damaged from both the claws and the fall, but the soft aura that was beginning to surround him made him feel much less pain. How do I do this... know these advanced spells by instinct? Who am I? he asked the fading stars in his mind. How do I know that I am called Incarnus?

Rising out of the water with faith in his decision, he began to glide back towards the shrine. But he heard two humans conversing, and stopped, hanging on to the tip of the cliff with his ice-white claws. Carefully, he listened, careful not to bang his iron-colored horns on the side of the cliff.

How do I understand this foreign tongue, one I do not speak?

Pain mysteriously began to shoot through his right arm. He panicked, flying off of the cliff and sinking down without a sound. Dark shadows were pulsating on his entire right side. What? Why does it hurt?

After it finally stopped, he thougthfully gazed at the snow-white clouds beginning to form in the sky. It's as if they're calling to me. My name is Haku.
