Kusarigamaitachi vs Grass King

Arena: Jesus Lake
The entire battlefield at first seems to be your regular, crystal-clear lake; though quite deep in the centre, one can see right to the bottom. The dirt seems, mostly, inclined to remain at the bottom unless someone intentionally stirs it up, and even then it will quickly settle when left to its own devices. As sunlight reaches to the bottom, plants have no problem growing in patches underneath the surface, although the environment might not be entirely appropriate for the seaweed that grows there. Indeed, the lake seems like a normal one, if perhaps purified by Suicune on a regular basis. That is, until you take a closer look and wonder - are those boulders... floating?

As it turns out, the surface of the lake is very solid. Pokémon, no matter how heavy, can easily walk on its surface, and the surface (but only the surface) even shakes with the effect of an earthquake when the appropriate attacks are used. It is this surface that the boulders must be resting on. It would also seem to explain the smooth surface of the lake, although the surface you walk on isn't the lake's actual surface; instead, it appears to be about two inches underwater.

However, pokémon inclined to swimming may do so, and the lake will seem like normal, though insanely pure, water to them. Anyone can easily switch between "lake" and "ground", though how it works is unknown. A swimmer, for example, can put its hands on the surface of the water and push down, to help pull it onto the surface, and from then on it can walk or run. If it wants to swim again, it can leap or slip or dive into the water as it pleases. Pokémon will not automatically float to the surface and suddenly find something underneath them, however, nor will the invisible surface suddenly disappear should they wish to go underwater. It requires actual movement to do this, although it doesn't take a full action unless the pokémon is low (under 20%) on either energy or health. Startled, flinching, sleeping, or fully confused pokemon can find themselves falling into the water if they move while in this state, so pokemon can be pulled into the water.

Any impurities above the two-inch-deep surface of the water will remain there, but any others will sink to the bottom very quickly, to be absorbed by the tall, purple, seaweed-like plants.

The lake appears to be surrounded by beautiful beaches of multicoloured sand, and beyond that, lush green grasses that eventually lead to a forest on one side, and a distant village on hills on the other.

Ouroboros sighs in relief at her commands, curling into a tight ball and closing her eyes to the world around her. Though the battle has been going her way till now, she feels so exhausted that she no longer cares whether she wins or loses – but as she rests, the energy flows through her, slowly restoring her will to fight. Tadpole is clearly eager to take advantage of her opponents’ break, and she would, if only her body weren’t so eager to disobey. Instead of cooling down for an ice beam, all she can manage is to stay in her defense curl position, laying on the bottom of the lake and waiting for her opponent to strike.

Ouroboros slowly opens her eyes, blinking to clear her vision. She spots her opponent where she’d left her, laying on the ground beneath her, and begins to charge another thunderbolt – just in case the poliwag though she had gotten rid of her. The dragonair contains the electricity as it snakes across her body, waiting to be released until it’s fully charged – and when it is, it explodes outwards, latching onto Tadpole with unholy fury. The poliwag squeezes her eyes shut as the thunderbolt runs across her small body, leaving tiny sparks wherever it touches for minutes after the attack dies out. Positive that her paralyzes will have worsened, Tadpole is stunned to find herself able to move – but she stays put, curled up as she had been. She closes her eyes again and begins to mumble, ancient words that she doesn’t even recognize herself; the words echo deep within her, empowering her with a heavy strength. She breathes deep, feeling much more prepared for battle.

Feeling more tired now after that last thunderbolt, Ouroboros doesn’t even bother curling up, instead simply letting herself float free in the calmness of the water. She closes her eyes and relaxes as the gentle waves tug at her body, pushing and pulling like a massage. Tadpole glares up at her from the ground, clearly jealous; while her opponent is relaxing, she remains unable to move at all. She had underestimated the severity of paralysis, and now she’s paying for it. But whenever she can move again… the dragon will be the one to pay.

Ouroboros rears back, the horn on her head sparking with electricity, then unleashes a thick bolt of lightning at her diminutive opponent. Tadpole squeaks and curls ever tighter as the lightning surges through her, causing her frozen muscles to seize up and twitch all the more. Once the blinding wave of pain has passed, the poliwag tries to get her scattered thoughts in order, concentrating on the suffocating feeling of her paralyzed muscles and coaxing the healing power of her body out into the open. A wave of healing energy rushes through her small form, gently loosening locked muscles and soothing her painful cramps. For a brief moment the poliwag glows white, then the refresh dissipates, leaving Tadpole to flex her tail and rock back and forth as she tests the suppleness of her muscles.

The relief is short-lived, however, for Ouroboros has another thunderbolt in store for the little water-type. Once again Tadpole is knocked back by the power of the electric attack, and to his horror, she feels her muscles spasming again, ravaged by the powerful blast of energy. Fortunately, though, as the attack dissipates, Tadpole's cautious attempts at moving around seem unhindered; her paralysis has not returned. Scorched and smoking, not to mention in considerable pain, the poliwag is filled with renewed hope and the determination to finish her graceful opponent off.

Ouroboros, a bit bored and fatigued behind her substitute, is far from terrified as she sees the poliwag uncurl, her eyes narrowed. Tadpole's little pink mouth contorts into a determined frown, and she launches herself at her opponent, broad tail working madly. Ouroboros' substitute slithers in front of her to take the attack, but Tadpole doesn't care; spinning around, she brings her tail sweeping in for a broad-side smack. Even Ouroboros is surprised as she sees cracks fan out across the side of her substitute, and Tadpole isn't done yet. Flailing around with her long tail, the poliwag unleashes a vicious beating on the impassive substitute, shattering it with the power of her assault. The substitute falls to pieces that sink slowly towards the pond's bottom, and in the end Tadpole is left flailing around in its scattered fragments, still caught up in the adrenaline rush of her endeavor attack.

Despite herself, Ouroboros is a little worried. There's nothing between her and the psychotic poliwag now, and while the water type isn't in the best of shape, Ouroboros isn't taking any chances. A static hum fills the water as she charges another thunderbolt, ignoring her tiredness in the face of the immediate danger. The powerful attack sends Tadpole reeling back through the water, little legs pedalling to no effect. Much to Ouroboros' disappointment, however, she manages to right herself, and though she floats in a daze for a moment, she is soon swimming back towards the dragonair. Ouroboros hisses and flares her feathery ears in an attempt to intimidate Tadpole into a retreat. It does no good; Tadpole skips a couple steps further, then leaps straight at Ouroboros' face, planting a sloppy kiss on the shocked dragonair's face. Tadpole falls back and gives Ouroboros a cheeky grin. The dragonair stares, perplexed, before her eyelids begin to flutter. The soporiphic secreted onto Tadpole's lips and transferred to Ouroboros' face does its work, even underwater, and the dragonair slumps in an inert coil, beginning to drift towards the bottom of the lake.

Ouroboros twitches in her sleep, some subconscious mental process latching on to her trainer's command. A huge snore escapes the dragonair's lips. The sound is garbled by its passage through the water but retains its volume and power, sending Tadpole rolling backwards as intense vibrations press in on him from all sides, rocking his sensitive ears with furious concussions.

Reeling from the attack and struggling to hang onto consciousness, Tadpole struggles towards Ouroboros. Just moving requires incredible effort, and though not especially tired, the poliwag has trouble concentrating on her task. Gathering everything she has, the poliwag hurls herself at Ouroboros--only to overshoot and go drifting ineffectually past the dragonair. Tadpole has only a moment to despair, though; a moment later, Ouroboros lets rip another great snore and blasts Tadpole straight out of consciousness.

Knocked Out!

The pokémon are recalled, twin beams of red light shooting from the trainers' pokéballs and pulling them into safety. The two trainers stride out to the middle of the lake--no doubt enjoying their brief Jesus-moments as the mysteriously solid water ripples below their feet--and exchange a customary handshake and post-battle congratulations. Of far more interest to them, though, is the money that changes hands. With financial matters cleared up, they go their separate ways, leaving the lake peaceful and still once more.

Kusarigamaitachi gets $16 for winning; Grass King, $6 for playing; and myself, $10 for a whole two reffings. Aktzin and Tadpole get one EXP each, while Ouroboros gets three. And finally, to clear up any confusion there might be, Tadpole's endeavor missed this round.
