Kusarigamaitachi Vs. Take_It_All

TruetoCheese

Be Bold (+Def, -Atk)
2vs2 Single
Damage Cap: 40%
Banned Moves: None
Terrain: ASB Central Stadium

Although designed to be a state-of-the-art battling facility and located at the very heart of ASB Central's battle district, ASB Central Stadium actually sees very little use. Most battlers prefer the infinite variety of the holodrome's simulated arenas to the basic, if impressive, stadium field, and official tournaments tend to feature tours of other regions rather than a homefield brawl. There is one advantage to the stadium, though--its proximity to the holodrome grants it access to a full range of simulation options, allowing trainers to trick out their team to whatever extent they like before battling.

There's nothing much to say about the battlefield: it's a large, rectangular arena covered in astroturf. A circular pool will open in its center if a pokémon requiring water to move around in is sent out. In this arena, pokémon can summon absolutely anything they need for their attacks: tidal waves, boulders, and so on are in ready supply.

Other: This battle takes place between a referee and one other member. The referee will use their own team of pokémon, but the other battler may choose either to use their own team OR choose any six nonlegendary pokémon with any items and abilities to use for this fight. In the former case, their pokémon gain experience as normal. In the latter case, they may choose to apply the experience earned by their rental pokémon, minus one point, to their team in any manner that they choose.

The prizes for this battle are $20 to the winner, $10 to the loser, and $15 to the referee. This battle does not fill a battle slot for either participant.

Let's go Poochyena!
Your first battle is here and you happen to be slower.

Let's start with the move Crunch. If you can't hit with that, use Snarl.
Follow with Shadow Ball.
End it all with Shadow Ball or Taunt if you can't hit with Shadow Ball.

Asber wasn’t very well known for its calm summer days, where the rolling fields of astroturf were not sieged by eager battlers, where one could rein in a cool drink and toast to the sun in a show of thanks for keeping it temperant. No, this wasn’t some backwater land, this was Asber. And gosh-darnit, if the government sanctioned pitting small animals against eachother, there would be plenty.

The site of battle today was one of the few fit for the training of potential referees. A long stretch of fake grass, ingeniously dubbed astroturf for no sane reason, with an interesting ability to produce any items currently required, proven by the fact each battler was sipping a milkshake. The referee candidate didn’t get food and water privileges until he became a ref.

Round One:

The trainers didn’t know how they ended up on a large green rectangle, or how they were going to ever get out, but that wasn’t really the point. The point was their Pokemon were itching to battle and they had run out of itching powder.

Kusari threw his Pokeball first, it clicked open with a sound that would set any Asberian’s teeth on edge, and released a small, seemingly lethargic brown and yellow humanoid. Kusari’s Abra, Mewtwo. picked at the earth with his clawed feet for a second, before he shrugged and lay down on the grass, perhaps to sleep.

Take(_It_All) had carefully analyzed his opponent by then, he subsequently plucked a Pokeball from his belt and threw it on the ground. The sphere clacked open and revealed a small pup Pokemon, the aptly named Poochyena. The Poochyena instantly started sniffing the ground curiously, running around his trainer’s feet and dashing here and there in excitement, all in a second. Take had figured he might as well neutralize any STAB attacks, but sighed as his Poochyena gnawed on his trouser knees.

A muffled gurgle of “Flargh, you make too much noise, quiet… need sleep” blurted from the general direction of Mewtwo, greatly piquing Pooch’s interest. The hyena’s ears stood up, and in a second he had galloped over to Mewtwo’s vulnerable form, and began vigorously sniffing it. He shrieked for a second as his snout caught itself in a tangle of dark cloth being hugged by the Abra. Pooch, now slightly more apprehensive, decided to carefully lean over the Abra’s form and give him a friendly nip on the shoulder. This ended up badly for him, as he tripped over one of Mewtwo’s foreclaws and ended up sinking his fangs deep into the Abra’s flank.

The Abra in question gave a cry, screaming something about blanky, and fling his arm outwards, catching the confused Pooch in a pulsing clothesline of darkened energy, the same he had just inserted into the Abra by accident. Pooch yelped as he was flung under his foe’s surprisingly strong arm, trapped there as the Abra mumbled back to sleep. This mumble seemed to have a profound effect, however, as a thin green layer of light formed across Mewtwo’s form.

The pup didn’t seem very deterred however, he knew deep down he deserved that for the unintended fangs in torso (trying to explain wouldn't make it better, anyway!), but he was still more annoyed by the fact that Mewtwo wouldn’t get up and play with him, only trap him under his ohgodstrongarms. Pooch yelped again, but this time kept his mouth open, energy from an ethereal world suddenly seeping into his fangs, coalescing quickly into an unstable ball. The sphere writhed as if it were alive, before it shot straight into Mewtwo’s left cheek, shooting the Psychic type across the astroturf and leaving a nasty, ghostly burn were it struck.

Mewtwo grumbled as he rose up, it wasn’t the weakened sting of the Shadow Ball that hurt, but the sting of waking up. He nuzzled the area where the sphere had struck with his beloved Reaper Cloth, Thank god blanky’s safe!. The dog would pay for that attack, he would pay dea-

Before Mewtwo could complete his ramblings, Pooch had already formed and fired another ball of shadow, he was given more time to carefully aim, and in turn managed to strike where he had struck before, leaving a searing scorch mark of pure black across the Abra’s face. Being awake didn’t help, as the attack had flung his head backwards painfully, and it hurt, even though his green armor had dispersed most of the blow; in fact, just touching the scar now hurt.

“Brilliant choice of tactics!” Mewtwo screeched, his voice being very high pitched due to having barely ever used it before (telepathy worked well enough). “I do say, I applaud your genius attempts.” Pooch wasn’t sure what Mewtwo really implied, but he seemed to like the pain brought on him, in a playful way, maybe? He barked back a cheery version of “Ok!” and swore to himself he would show off more, might as well get in his playmate’s good books.

Technical points:
- Counter should do 28 damage if crunch does 14. If you're going by the guide, crunch does 13, though - stat changes are generally calculated before the modifier for effectiveness.
- Encore lasts for three repetitions of the attack, so it should last three more actions. And while I'm not sure if it's listed anywhere, by precedent, moves like light screen last for five actions after the action on which they're used.
- Shadow ball should cost 4 energy - I assume you added one point for the effect chance, but the guide says "a greater than 20% chance", not "20% chance or greater".
- Energy and damage are otherwise fine.

Proofread for grammar and sentence structure, consider the trainers' pronouns (which are visible in the postbit), and read the AAG. Encore's duration is specified in its entry, and your description of light screen sounds more like safeguard. Events are clear enough, but the characterisation is a bit odd--crunch by accident? The pokémon are here for a battle, however seriously you want them to take it, and crunch was an order Take_It_All gave--and the descriptions of the moves don't particularly match up.

Anyway, Mewtwo, Poochyena should be trapped in the encore, so we should be safe enough from any tricks. A 20 hp substitute should do it. Then we'll get our damage up to par with a couple of focus punches. If the substitute is broken before Poochyena performs his third shadow ball, however, go with drain punch instead.

Substitute (20 hp) ~ Focus Punch ~ Focus Punch / Drain Punch
