Terrain: The Battle Factory

The Battle Factory’s arena is simple but practical: a large clay arena bordered by a two-meter-wide, three-meter-deep trough of water to accommodate water-dependent pokemon and attacks. The ceiling is retractable, allowing weather attacks to be used. Other than that, there’s nothing of note: just wide-open brawling space with nothing to get in your way.

The Battle Factory’s stands are mostly empty, housing only a few bored-looking spectators and one old guy who has apparently fallen asleep. The only enthusiastic-looking attendees are probably members of one of the competitor’s families. The first round of the Championship tournament isn’t the most highly-anticipated event in the history of the League, but for the challengers loitering to one side of the arena, it is just as important as any other match. Doing their best not to show any nervousness they might be feeling, they crane their necks to watch a huge screen mounted on the side wall between them. For now, it shows only their own names and faces, but at a signal from the referee, images of pokemon flash at the bottom of the display, a dizzying cascade of different species.

The randomization seems to last an age for the competitors whose victory may rest on what the computer chooses, but it is really only a few seconds before six images settle on the screen and, with a rattle, six pokéballs are dispensed into depressions below the display. The two trainers step up and select one pokéball each before making their way to the boxes marked off on either side of the arena.

A brief, muted stir of activity sweeps the stands. The League Championship is about to begin, and even the most jaded of spectator’s can’t help but feel a little thrill as the referee calls out the match’s beginning and two pokéballs are hurled into the air.

For this battle, you will be using a rental Pokémon instead of one from your team. The six (only one of each) available to you are the following:

Exploud (M), Rattata (M) <Run Away>, Slugma (M) <Magma Armor>, Bronzong (X) <Heatproof>, Vespiquen (F), Beldum (X)

The trainers make their selections and toss their pokéballs into the arena, revealing their pokémon of choice. On Animorph's side of the arena an exploud takes form, the pokémon standing calmly with arms folded as the numerous ports on his body expel quiet squeaks and whistles. Across from him a bronzong appears, hovering like a small UFO in front of Blaziking.

The bronzong's alien appearance doesn't deter Exploud; the pokémon will take damage as much as any other, after all. The normal-type opens his huge mouth and lets out an expressive bellow as he charges across the arena. Ordinarily, it would be a bit difficult to get one's mouth around Bronzong, but Exploud's huge jaws do the job admirably well, and the normal type's teeth, sizzling with electricity, slam into the bronzong's metal skin with a jarring clang.

Bronzong isn't about to put up with being chomped on, though. Eyelike panels on its front glow purple as a lance of psychic energy stabs into Exploud's brain. The normal type releases his hold on Bronzong in order to let out a bellow of pain, clutching at his temples. He staggers away from Bronzong until the throbbing in his head finally abates, but as soon as it does, his crippling pain is replaced with fury. Not about to let the floating bell-thing go unpunished, Exploud leaps into the air and lands hard, sending a tremor rippling down into the earth.

Meanwhile, Bronzong is constructing a bit of insurance against any possible revenge: an invisible bubble of power extends outward from his body, encasing him in a solid sphere of protection. As an earthquake comes rippling up from the depths, the protect shield keeps Bronzong stable and airborne while the arena around him trembles and shakes, a few hairline cracks spreading across its surface.

If he was angry before, Exploud is now absolutely livid. Spreading his arms wide, he lets out keening jumble of whistles and shrieks from the various holes in his body as he calls upon his somewhat limited control over water. The water in the ring pool surrounding the arena sloshes fitfully, then begins to flow together into a towering wave that builds behind Exploud. At the normal type's command, the wave goes roaring towards Bronzong, picking Exploud up on its crest as it goes. The surf attack breaks against the bronzong with considerable force, shoving the steel type much closer to Blaziking than it had been before and leaving it drenched.

Exploud comes to rest on the earth again as the wave peters out, much of it flowing back into the pool. His satisfaction with the successful attack leaves him especially open to psychic assault, however, and as Bronzong angles another extrasensory into his mind, he pays for his momentary inattention. The barb of psychic power slips deep into Exploud's mind, touching off a greatly inflated pain response. The normal type shrieks and clutches his head, wracked with shivers as the extrasensory burns deep in his brain, seeming to crack his skull in half and set the brain within on fire. When at last the extrasensory runs its course, Exploud is left panting and shivering, dazed by the sheer power of the psychic attack.

Good good good, we seem to be doing quite nicely. This time around, try to get him to sleep with Hypnosis on the first turn. If he protects on the first turn, use Iron Defense, and use Hypnosis again. Otherwise use Psychic. If he at all uses Earthquake, use Protect to defend yourself from it, and don't use Protect twice in a row.

Opening every port on his body, Exploud lets out a hideous cacaphony of bellows, howls and shrieks. The humans down by the arena, and even most of those safe up in the stands, are forced to cover their ears as the deafening noise blares on and on. Bronzong, with little to speak of in the way of ears, is less affected, though the powerful vibrations of the uproar do pulse against its steel body. Its eyes glow purple once more as it concentrates psychic energy on its opponent. Exploud's eyes are drawn irresistably to the luminous spots on the bronzong's front, but though he start to feel a little woozy, eyelids drooping, a particularly loud blat from one of his larger ports wakes him right back up again. Though Bronzong is persistent, its hypnotic waves ultimately cannot overcome the sheer volume of Exploud's uproar.

Once the light dies in Bronzong's eyes and the danger has passed, Exploud quiets down to no more than a few melodic whistles and tweets as he calls on the water in the arena once again, conjuring up a great wave that he rides down to crash against Bronzong. The steel type hardly waits before retaliating with an attack of its own; calling again on its psychic powers, Bronzong conjures up a web of telekinetic force that seizes Exploud and lifts him from the ground.

Unlike the extrasensory, which was primarily mental, the psychic attack goes to work on all of Exploud's body, burning his skin, straining against his bones and contorting his muscles. Exploud struggles against the attack, but it is no use; the pain doesn't subside until Bronzong's concentration runs out and Exploud is dumped unceremoniously back to the ground. The normal type lies there for a moment, recovering, before heaving himself back to his feet. The psychic attack may have been damaging, but it was nothing next to Bronzong's last extrasensory.

Once more Exploud spreads his arms and calls out to the water at the margins of the arena; by now, the arena is well and thoroughly soaked as a result of his previous surfs, and only pumps working silently beneath the arena's surface to keep water in the trough ensure that there's enough liquid left to power the surf attack. Exploud is unaware of this as he draws up another great wave and sends it crashing against his opponent, who is now well and truly dripping. Battered though it is, Bronzong has no trouble arranging a bit of revenge: again Exploud is lifted from his feet in a bubble of psychic force, and again he shivers as blasts of telekinetic energy worry at him, threatening to pull him apart. When dropped back to the arena floor, Exploud is definitely slower in recovering than he was before; the repeated psychic attacks are clearly taking their toll on his body.

Squaring his shoulders, Exploud rushes for Bronzong, his stubby teeth once more wreathed in sparks. His jaws shut with a resounding clang as Bronzong is caught up between them, the sheen of water on the steel type's metal skin spreading the malicious charge all across its form. For a moment Bronzong's circuits are too overloaded by the electricity to form a coherent response, but after a moment it recovers enough to seize Exploud with psychic force, pry apart his jaws, and hurl him away.

For a moment Exploud struggles to rise, but then he simply gives up, flopping flat on his back and staring up at the ceiling. His body feels as though it's been wrung out by some malicious hand; no surprise there, considering what he's been going through. A break is therefore welcome, although it can't really do much to ease the full-body ache that ails him.

Bronzong watches the exploud lying still, logic circuits clattering through a frantic series of calculations. In the end, it decides that there is no hiden threat in the normal type's behavior and duly proceeds with another psychic attack. Once more the exploud is lifted from the floor, face contorted with pain as psychic energy crushes his body. Worse yet, the burning tendrils of psychic force seeping beneath the exploud's skin creep in beneath his skull, inflaming the brain beneath with a hideous headache. When dropped back to the floor, Exploud is left clutching his head and groaning, all the more susceptible to psychic manipulation with his natural defenses dampened by pain.

Opening one eye a crack, hands still firmly clamped around his head, Exploud tries to gauge Bronzong's condition. The steel type is floating at the far end of the arena, arm-like metal tabs held out stiff and straight and eyeports dark. If anything, though, Bronzong is too still, not bobbing up and down as it usually does but locked in at one altitude, holding steady as though frozen in an invisible block of ice. Exploud lets his eyelid fall closed again and massages his temples. No point in using sing--Bronzong shows all the signs of having set up a protect shield. Better for him to relax and hope this awful headache passes than make a futile attempt at putting his foe to sleep.

Under ordinary circumstances, Exploud would probably have a great deal of trouble sleeping, what with the pain in his head. Fortunately, a rest attack is no ordinary sleep, and though putting himself into a trance is a bit difficult for Exploud, once he begins feeding energy into his natural healing abilities, he rapidly sinks into a deeply comatose state. Though the majority of his injuries are invisible, the bruises he's managed to acquire begin to fade and a couple small cuts close up, an external testament to a much more extensive internal regeneration.

So deeply asleep is Exploud that even getting grabbed and twisted around by another vicious psychic isn't enough to snap him awake. In fact, as soon as Bronzong releases him, the normal type takes a great breath and blasts out a spectacular snore. Bronzong clicks in some surprise and indignation as the intense soundwaves rattle its steely body. The snore is really no more than a minor irritant, though, and after a moment, Bronzong fires off another powerful psychic attack, contorting Exploud's limbs and shredding tendons that his rest had only just restored.

This time when free of Bronzong's psychic influence, Exploud begins to mutter to himself, shifting weakly in his sleep as though uncomfortable. As his nonsense dissertation continues, a constellation of white lights blink into existence in the air around him and begin growing larger until each of them is about as big around as a human fist. Bronzong watches impassively, already revving up its next psychic, as the glowing orbs circle Exploud faster and faster, then shoot away from him in all directions. A couple strike Bronzong's front, eliciting a pair of hollow clangs, but the steel type doesn't even hesitate before sending another psychic attack shivering through Exploud's body. This, at last, is enough to bring the normal type back to wakefulness; he looks around groggily, massaging his temples. His headache has faded a bit after the rest, but he's still not in top shape, and he feels extremely drained.

Exploud is grateful for the opportunity to recover a bit further after his rest, and gladly remains reclining rather than getting back to his feet. Trying not to think about what Bronzong might have in store from him while he lies around defeneseless, Exploud closes his eyes and relaxes on the damp arena floor.

As it turns out, Bronzong has aboslutely nothing in store for Exploud, having been commanded to take a break itself. The steel type settles gently to the floor and sinks into hibernation, recharging its batteries to be sure that it will have enough energy to keep slinging the psychics in future rounds.

After a few minutes, Exploud reluctantly begins to stir. The normal type gets back to his feet, stretches, then turns his thoughts to battle once more. The water in the puddles at his feet ripples and sloshes as another series of high-pitched squeaks and chirps calls liquid towards him, drawing it up into a wave. While Bronzong's main processors come online again across the arena, Exploud sweeps his arms forward, directing the surf attack towards its target. Bronzong barely manages to make it back into the air before the wall of water crashes down atop it, sweeping it back towards its temporary trainer.

When the surf has sloshed harmlessly away into the outer pool, soaking Blaziking's shoes and socks as it passes, Bronzong picks up its own attack with only the barest hint of lag. Exploud is raised once more into the air, teeth gritted as he rides out another vicious wave of telekinetic misery. When dropped, Exploud takes a moment to recover, then fills his stubby teeth with electrical charge and starts forward to take another bite out of Bronzong's health.
As before, Exploud bites down as hard as he can on the steel type, forcing disruptive electricity deep into Bronzong's circuitry, causing the pokémon to emit incoherent static as it reboots its logic circuits. Once it's recovered, though, Bronzong has no problem prying Exploud's jaws open and shoving the normal type back to his side of the arena--by this point, if it had any eyes to speak of, Bronzong would probably be rolling them.
