Terrain: The Battle Factory

The Battle Factory’s arena is simple but practical: a large clay field bordered by a two-meter-wide, three-meter-deep trough of water to accommodate water-dependent pokemon and attacks. The ceiling is retractable, allowing weather attacks to be used. Other than that, there’s nothing of note: just wide-open brawling space with nothing to get in your way.

The Battle Factory’s stands are mostly empty, housing only a few bored-looking spectators and one old guy who has apparently fallen asleep. The only enthusiastic-looking attendees are probably members of one of the competitor’s families. The first round of the Championship tournament isn’t the most highly-anticipated event in the history of the League, but for the challengers loitering to one side of the arena, it is just as important as any other match. Doing their best not to show any nervousness they might be feeling, they crane their necks to watch a huge screen mounted on the side wall between them. For now, it shows only their own names and faces, but at a signal from the referee, images of pokemon flash at the bottom of the display, a dizzying cascade of different species.

The randomization seems to last an age for the competitors whose victory may rest on what the computer chooses, but it is really only a few seconds before six images settle on the screen and, with a rattle, six pokéballs are dispensed into depressions below the display. The two trainers step up and select one pokéball each before making their way to the boxes marked off on either side of the arena.

A brief, muted stir of activity sweeps the stands. The League Championship is about to begin, and even the most jaded of spectator’s can’t help but feel a little thrill as the referee calls out the match’s beginning and two pokéballs are hurled into the air.

For this battle, you will be using a rental Pokémon instead of one from your team. The six (only one of each) available to you are the following:

Nidoking (M) <Rivalry>, Himonlee (M) <Limber>, Zangoose (F), Pupitar (M), Alakazam (F) <Inner Focus>, Nidoran (M) <Rivalry>

1. Grass King chooses a pokémon
2. Negrek chooses and attacks

Re: [09] Negrek vs Grass King (ref: Chiropter)

Orders from Negrek.

In that case, I'll take the zangoose. For the duration of the battle, I think we'll call you Griffe.

All right then, Griffe, let's see what you've got! Hammer that alakazam with a shadow ball assault, then blast him with a widespread icy wind to cut his speed. Finish with another shadow ball.

However, if he goes in for a damaging attack, give him a double-power payback to reward him when he's done. If he'd rather protect or detect, swords dance.

Okay Alakazam, I'll call you Neuron.

Okay Neuron, start off by using Thunder Wave, to paralyze her. Next, use Disable, so she can't use Shadow Ball again. Finish off with Skill Swap.

Round 1
On Grass King’s side of the field stands an alakazam, who glances around at her temporary trainer and the paltry audience, looking decidedly unimpressed with both as she twirls a spoon idly between her fingers. Opposite her, a zangoose materializes in front of Negrek; after blinking a few times, she looks around and sniffs at her new trainer curiously, smiling as she is given a nickname. Eager to show off her battling skills for the human, the newly-christened Griffe bares her claws and smirks challengingly at the alakazam, now called Neuron, whose expression does not change whatsoever as the referee gives the signal to begin…

Neuron (F) <Inner Focus>
Health: 100%

Status: Disdainful.

Despite her apparent disinterest, Neuron reacts almost instantly to Grass King’s first command. Holding her spoons together and pointing them at the zangoose, she mentally channels an electric charge into them; the spoons spark briefly, then shoot off a short electric pulse. The electricity moving through the air is mostly invisible, but when it hits Griffe she suddenly jerks straight, losing her fighting pose as her muscles spasm uncontrollably. She snarls and struggles, but her body seems to be completely out of her control - and her fur is all poofed out, which is rather embarrassing.

Neuron watches Griffe struggle without any apparent emotion, but she scowls a bit when she hears her next command. She can’t very well Disable an attack that hasn’t been used, so she doesn’t even try, just returns to twirling her spoons while she waits for Griffe to do something. The zangoose finally stops struggling, realizing that she’ll be more likely to regain control of her body if she relaxes; after a few seconds, this strategy pays off, and she manages to move on her own again, though her muscles still feel stiff and twitchy. Fortunately, she doesn’t need to move much for her next attack. She takes a very deep breath, lowering her internal temperature to cool the air in her lungs, and exhales a burst of freezing-cold wind. While not powerful enough to hurt Neuron much, the frigid air induces a fit of shivering and leaves behind a thin layer of frost over her skin that hampers her movement.

Trying to stop her shivering, Neuron sits down and assumes a meditative position. Eyes glowing, she extends her psychic senses to Griffe’s physiological structure, examining and memorizing it, then making changes to her own physiology to match the zangoose’s natural toxin immunity. In the process, her own inborn ability is lost and duplicated in her opponent; Griffe suddenly finds herself feeling a little more clear-minded, able to keep her focus through distractions… such as the current distraction of her muscles freezing up again. She remains calm this time, watching as Neuron casually lifts herself to her feet telekinetically, and waiting for the paralysis to wear off so she can really show Negrek what she can do.

OKay Neuron, start off with Calm Mind. Then use Toxic. Finish off with Metronome. If Griffe is going to use a physical damaging attack, then replace the action with Counter.

Calm Mind/Counter ~ Toxic/Counter ~ Metronome/Counter

Ugh, paralysis. No worries, though, Griffe, you're doing fine.

Start off by sauntering over and giving Neuron a light thwack on the nose, claws out. Make it a very light blow, but obviously damaging in nature so that Neuron goes to the trouble of a counter. Control is key here. If you're feeling too paralyzed for that, though, just relax and watch that calm mind very, very closely--we want to mimic that.

Next up, take that poison and then refresh away your troubles.

Finally, if Neuron is still faster than you and damages you with the attack from metronome, pay her right back. If your refresh failed for some reason, try it again. If all goes well, however, just knock a chunk off her health with a shadow ball.

Neuron waits for a moment before taking action, watching Griffe to see if she’ll try to attack him or not. As the zangoose begins stumbling over towards her, straining against her paralysis, Neuron calmly adopts a defensive stance, ready to take whatever Griffe dishes out and pay it back double. Griffe stops once she gets within arms length of her opponent, pauses for a second… and lightly swipes Neuron upside the nose with her claws.

Letting out a rather undignified yelp (more from being startled than pain), Neuron grabs her nose with one hand even as the other reflexively swings forward, delivering a fairly light counterpunch to Griffe’s shoulder. Scowling at the zangoose, the alakazam begins working up a mix of potent toxins within her body, releasing them into her saliva and swishing them around in her mouth. When she feels they are mixed enough, she removes her hand from the still-stinging scratches on her nose (noticing a bit of blood on it as she does so), and spits a dark purple liquid at her opponent.

The poison soaks through Griffe’s chest fur before seeping through her skin and into her bloodstream, unhindered by the usual protective antitoxins. Griffe, however, simply closes her eyes, and focuses on speeding up her body’s natural healing; within a few seconds, she feels her muscles loosen up, and only feels the barest twinge from the Toxic poison before it is purged from her system.

Neuron’s scowl deepens as she watches Griffe’s rapid recovery. Not waiting for her to attack, the alakazam holds up her spoons precisely parallel to each other, and begins to wave them back and forth in a slow, steady rhythm. Back… and forth… back… and forth… Griffe looks away, not wanting to get distracted by the almost hypnotic movement; at almost the same instant, Neuron stops the swaying, and her eyes begin to glow an eerie red. Her actions driven by the power of the metronome, she tries to make eye contact with Griffe, but the zangoose is still looking away, holding out her hand and generating a ball of a wispy black material. Grunting angrily, she finally gives up, her eyes returning to their normal color; Griffe notices this out of the corner of her eye and turns to face her again, hurling the shadow ball in her hand. Neuron stands and takes it, teeth clenched as the ghostly energy explodes painfully over her body.

That's the way, Griffe! Keep it up!

This round's pretty simple. Start it off with a razor wind, and follow with shock wave. Finish with a thunderbolt!

If, though, Neuron goes and lays another status condition, get your revenge by tearing her limb from limb with a facade. Only use facade once, however, and only in the same action that you were statused. If you can't do that, forget about it--you'll get her back later!

Finally, if Neuron strikes you with a damaging attack, pay her back.

Griffe begins slashing her claws wildly every which way through the air in front of her, generating a mass of razor-thin blades of air. The razor wind slices past Neuron, leaving a crisscrossing network of tiny cuts over her body. Appalled at herself for not having reacted quicker, the alakazam moves swiftly to put up a protective barrier; her eyes glow as a field of shimmering light comes into being around her.

Though a portion of her mind stays focused on supplying the light screen with power, Neuron quickly focuses on her next move. She extends her psychic power into Griffe’s mind, subtly interfering with the zangoose’s visual centers. From Griffe’s point of view, she merely watches as Neuron raises one of her spoons and bends it, then winces as she suddenly experiences a wave of disorientation as her vision blurs and bends.

When blinking quickly several times does nothing to clear up her vision, Griffe gives up and begins charging up her next attack - it’s not like she really has to aim this one anyway. Spreading out her claws, she releases a crackling wave of electricity; half of the wave dissipates against the light screen, and Neuron calmly takes the remainder of the attack, looking none the worse for wear.

Feeling a little happier now (and warmer - all the ice on her limbs has melted off by now), Neuron calmly sends another thunder wave Griffe’s way. The zangoose scowls as she once again loses control of her body, falling to the ground as her limbs spasm randomly. She thought she was done with this, dammit! Focusing on her anger, she manages to force her protesting body forward and lunges at Neuron, jumping through the light screen and attacking her viciously. Claws and fangs tear at Neuron mercilessly, as Griffe unleashes all her pent-up rage, and Neuron can do little to defend herself but fall to the ground and curl into a ball, waiting out the attack. When Griffe finally ends the assault, breathing heavily but looking quite satisfied, Neuron hesitantly gets back to her feet, in considerable pain and bleeding badly from multiple deep wounds.

Attack orders from Negrek

You're doing great, Griffe. This round's going to sting a bit, but I think our opponent will enjoy it less than us. Start off by relaxing and refreshing yourself; close your eyes, too, if you think that'll help your vision any. Then, counter away those drain punches.

If your refresh doesn't work at first, give it another shot, but try to get in at least one counter.

Eyes blazing with outrage at the beating she just took, Neuron pulls back a fist, which begins glowing with a strange golden aura. Unable to back up very far due to her paralysis, Griffe can do little to try to evade Neuron’s punch, and so takes the full force of it. As the alakazam’s fist impacts Griffe’s chest, the aura seems to draw several tendrils of the same energy out from her body, which rip off from her as she stumbles back from the force of the punch. These merge with the rest of the energy, which briefly spreads out to encompass Neuron’s entire body; when it vanishes, several of the alakazam’s wounds have healed completely.

Griffe holds a paw to her chest, wincing, but actually rather glad that her opponent is finally doing something other than defending or paralyzing. After all, a whole battle of that wasn’t going to be any fun at all… Not ready to strike back just yet, she focuses again on speeding up her body’s healing processes, and within a few seconds feels her limbs return to normal as her damaged nerve endings are healed.

Much more comfortable, and able to move at her full speed now, Griffe drops into a defensive stance, smirking at Neuron as though daring her to punch her again. Neuron doesn’t show any visible reaction to this; she just wreathes her fist in the same golden aura and slugs the zangoose in the gut. This time, however, even as more of Griffe’s energy in absorbed through Neuron’s fist, the zangoose lashes out with a strike of her own, at double the strength of the drain punch; the blow sends Neuron flying backwards, landing painfully on the hard floor of the Battle Factory.

At about that moment, the light screen surrounding Neuron flickers and dies. Neuron just scowls and pushes herself to her feet, preparing a third drain punch. She moves quickly to attack, hoping to hit before Griffe can get ready to counter it - but no such luck. Even as energy drained from the zangoose briefly soothes her wounds, the immediate counterattack painfully knocks Neuron to the ground again.

Hmm, damage cap is 35%, so Neuron could have gone as low as 14% this round from 49%.

The total damage she took this round did reach 35% - she just recovered some health from the Drain Punches.

Ah, okay.

That's the way, Griffe! Let's keep it coming.

Start off with shadow ball, then follow with swift and, finally, a thunderbolt. As before, respond to status with facade, but only on the action that the status was laid, and return damaging attacks with payback. If your payback has been disabled when you would ordinarily use it, though, instead switch back to your primary command.
