The Very Hard Drive, an improbable contraption made up of no drive at all but instead outdated forms of removable storage, sits deep in the guts of some mysterious computer. Gargantuan in proportion, the floppy and CD's that comprise its boundaries hold data unknown--or perhaps none at all, still waiting for the electrical signals that will inscribe them with information.
The trainers that have alighted on the great floppy disc have little interest in such matters, however. They're here for just one purpose: to do battle, and that of course requires no rumination on the mysteries of their arena. syphondblade and Atmey Detective stand opposite one another, sharing a mutually determined stare. Their pokéballs are out and at the ready, their initial combatants already chosen; it is only the extremely belated go-ahead from their referee that holds the carnage in check now. When at last they are called upon to cast down their pokéballs, they do so without hesitation. From twin explosions of light emerge ShadeSpire the gastly, barely visible in the dim conditions of the Very Hard Drive, and Claymore the baltoy. The pokémon await their commands, ShadeSpire doing his best to get a rise out of one very unresponsive opponent with little result, eager to be in battle at least.

ShadeSpire's luminous eyes flash crazy colors as he casts a streamer of glowing lights in Claymore's direction. The baltoy is entranced by the psychedelic illusion, blinking its narrow eyes in an attempt to clear its head. It's no use, unfortunately; Claymore is lost in the power of the confuse ray, so distracted that it loses some control of its normal levitation abilities and crashes unceremoniously to the surface of the floppy disc.
ShadeSpire grins wickedly, seeing that his confuse ray has been a success, and seeks to follow it up by dazzling his opponent still further. As Claymore is slowly righting itself, fighting a foreign sense of dizziness caused by the persistent confuse ray, ShadeSpire drifts down until he is directly in front of the baltoy's face. There is no way Claymore can hope to avoid the gastly's gaze as ShadeSprire begins to bob slowly from side to side, emitting powerful hypnotic waves from his eyes. The baltoy wobbles uncertainly, still only halfway off the floor, its eyes sliding inexorably shut. Finally the baltoy submits entirely to sleep and collapses.
ShadeSpire makes no attempt to hide his delight, nor does he retreat from close quarters with his opponent, intending to blast Claymore at close range. Something goes awry as the ghost hacks up a hunk of ghostly energy, though, and the shadow ball bursts harmlessly against the plastic to one side of Claymore's body. ShadeSpire hisses with rage. What was that? A little overconfidence, maybe? The gastly can't believe he managed to miss that shot, especially not after good fortune allowed him to land his hypnosis in one try.
