the fact that capitalism is godawful does not make communism a viable alternative

Well, prior experience for one. Although, in effect, most Communist regiemes so far weren't truly Communist, perhaps from this it could be extrapolated that in fact, true Communism can never be achieved due to pure human greed.

You left out fascism, but no one really cares about that extreme right now.

Socialism is the best approach to our issues right now. (the term you were looking for) As has been said, there is not unlimited money, so people should not be allowed to accumulate it as such.
