• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

Debating tonight

I'm really quite surprised that I didn't make this thread sooner.

OK, so me and two my friends are going out tonight to raise the debate that teenagers should be allowed in bars and pubs at the age of 14 and over unacompanied. The idea is at first controversial, I understand, but we have looked into the matter, of course, and we believe that it is a generally good idea. The main issues that we'll be talking about are that it is beneficial to the owner of the bar/pub, that it provides somewhere safe for teens to socialise and that the teen crime rate and legal age to enter bars in other parts of europe are both considerably lower. We have practiced as much as we can for this, going to sessions after school (and even during school) and I believe that we're ready for this. We would have practiced even more, but due to the recent british weather, we haven't been able to do much this last week or so.

tl;dr: Me and a group of friends are debating the issue that teens should be allowed to enter bars unnacompanied.

EDIT: I'm going to be leaving shortly. We have a pre-show meeting at 6:45 and then it starts at 7:00

Good luck.

But I sense that you're gonna have to pull for a compromise, and some numbers to back your claims.

We do indeed have some numbers. As far as I can remember, Germany's alcohol consumption takes up around 17% of Europe's drinking total. But that's all I can remember unfortunately. I'm not doing the main body of the speech, one of my friends are.

Hmm. Good luck; debates are great fun! I hope you'll enjoy it. If anything, it'll be good practice.

Just a few things...

it is beneficial to the owner of the bar/pub
Arguable. They probably wouldn't profit that much from it, considering that 14-year-olds still can't buy alcoholic beverages, and - besides - having them around in your bar would probably give rise to all sorts of troubles. (I mean, 14-year-olds! 14-year-olds.)

that it provides somewhere safe for teens to socialise
"Safe" isn't really the word you're looking for...

the teen crime rate and legal age to enter bars in other parts of europe are both considerably lower
How do you know there's a connection?

Germany's alcohol consumption takes up around 17% of Europe's drinking total.
Maybe I'm missing something here, but... what does this prove?
