Egypt Protests

I'm not saying Egypt will become all singin' and all dancin', but in all honesty I don't really understand why everyone just assumes it's going to get taken over instantly by islamic radicals. The Muslim Brotherhood has a fairly insignificant amount of support (proportionally to the population of Egypt) and I'm pretty sure Egyptians at large don't look at Iran and sigh, dreaming of living under that regime.

I just think it shows a really low amount of confidence in their intelligence or some sort of irrational assumption that any country with a muslim majority is incapable of choosing a non-crazy leader.

I am. If you look at the terrible Islamic repressive regimes, the standard of living in those countries tends to be awful beyond awful. In Egypt the standard of living is fairly poor, but people had access to Internet, YouTube, Facebook - that was a big catalyst for the revolution. Poor people don't even have a pc. They don't have a cell phone. They don't have drinking water. If you compare Egypt to what's around it, they are still reasonably rich by those standards.

I don't think the Egyptians want to be like Iran; I think they see Turkey as a better role model.

The bullets used by the regime on civillians are the leftmost kind. It's really insane. Does anyone know if there's a way to help the protesters? Like, financially or anything. Jesus.

in other news, no one i know at school gives a fuck or is even aware.

the second part being far less severe since it's, somehow, easy to not hear about things like this in America ...
