Gamecube error?

So I've been playing Tales of Symphonia a lot lately. About a half hour into playing it, the game froze, and then my screen turned all black and displayed, "An error has occurred. Please turn off the Gamecube and consult the instruction manual for more information, etc. etc."

So I turned it off, ignored the instruction booklet, turned it back on, and continued to play for about another half hour, when it happened again. This time I checked the manual and it basically said it was either the Gamecube or the game. I cleaned the disc (though it was hardly dirty or scratched at all) and put it back. I took a break, then later played for about another half hour - and then the game froze and the same error message appeared for a third time.

I haven't tried playing any other games since then, so I don't know for sure if it's the game or the Gamecube. If it was the game, I assume it would have happened sooner into my playing of it. I fear it's the Gamecube - does anyone have any advice or similar stories or whatnot? Is there anything I can do to fix it or get it fixed? It has to be six years old at the very least.

You might clean the lens of the reader or something. Mine had the same problem for a while, and I had to spin the game by hand and quickly close it and power on before I finally decided to clean it.

Then I ended up getting a Wii and my cube doesn't see as much use >.>

Hmm, okay. Any suggestions for what I should use to clean it? Will just a soft dry cloth do, or should I be using a small amount of water/some kind of solution with it?

Some kind of solution should work. When I clean my PS2, I dab a q-tip in rubbing alcohol or peroxide and gently rub it, and then dry it, so that should work too.
