High school

So yeah today was our first day of high school, and my first day in the high school, being a freshman. It was kinda boring, but still fun all the same. I can tell this'll be another good year for me, since all the teachers are really nice and I know most of the people in my class already.

So here's my schedule:

1. Marching Band
2. English 10
3. Anthropology
4. Spanish II
5. Geometry
6. World Geography
7. Physical & Earth Science

I find it kind of funny that I have the same teacher for Anthropology and World Geography, but it makes sense, I guess. More sense than our Spanish teacher from the middle school teaching tech classes now, what the hell.

I've known our band director since sixth grade, so we already have a good relationship there. The older band kids don't seem so bad. Marching while playing an instrument in the heat sucks a bit, especially since we're supposed to be marching in a parade on Saturday. I think they said it was one or two miles, but guess what? The only time I ever walked a whole mile outside the lip of my shoe rubbed the skin off my foot and I got this huge blister which then got rubbed off by my shoe and started bleeding. I dunno, maybe wearing socks will help, but sneakers are really hot and make my feet sweat. I prefer Crocs.

I'm the only freshman in both my English 10 class and in anthropology, but I hope this won't be too big of a problem. I think I have a pretty good grasp of grammar and geography, and all the other anthropology students will be starting from the same point as me, so.

Our Spanish teacher says he's really going to focus on speaking Spanish as close to 100% of the time as possible. The only other freshman in that class already has a good start, since she's hispanic and has Spanish speakers at home. Oh, and the teacher is also the head of the golfing club, so he has a bunch of golf clubs in the corner, which is really cool and possibly handy in some cases.

I have pretty neutral feelings about geometry. Everyone tells me I'm good at math, and I do get good grades and understand it all (aside from occasional cases), but math is, to be honest, my least favorite subject. I'm pretty sure I'll do well at it, it's just probably not going to be a "fun" class for me.

World geography will probably be easy for me. I've spent all summer playing geography games on Sporcle, and know every country in the world (though I may have some trouble finding ones in the Caribbean and western Oceania). I've moved on to capitals, and know all the state ones, and well over half the world ones. I know some physical landmarks as well, so probably not very hard at all.

Science is my favorite subject; I'm actually a little grumpy that they don't let freshman do any of the elective science classes. Who says I can't do astronomy? I can understand chemistry, because you could hurt someone if you don't know what you're doing, but astronomy? What am I gonna do, make an asteroid fall out of the sky? At least the teacher is nice, and pretty funny. He rambles a lot (like a lot of people I know, myself included), and hey, I found out that he also teaches astronomy, which is a class that I will take even if I die first.

So tl;dr, high school will probably be fun this year.

Not to rain on your parade but geography is waaaaay more than "this country is here! its capital is x!"

No, you could potentially hurt yourself, and even then it would be no worse than a blister. I first had chemistry when I was... 13? And didn't kill myself. I don't understand the US school system. :(

Neither do I, opaltiger. I think it has something to do with union contracts/ the fact that people sue for EVERYTHING over here and they don't want a lawsuit.

I know (imports and exports and climate and blah blah blah) but it's got to help. At least if the teacher says "Mauritius" I'll know what the hell he's talking about.

Okay yeah marching band is pretty cool. Apparently it also keeps me safe from seniors because, according to my friend, "band kids stick together, and if you mess with one of them you mess with the entire band. You can tell when someone is a band kid because they just carry themselves in a band kid way. Also, a way to tell who's a freshman is easy. You just look for the people who have their noses in a schedule trying to figure out where the hell they're going. You've memorized your schedule, and also people can tell you're not all there. Oh and you're friends with me, and people know not to mess with me."

So apparently people can tell with one look that I'm a screwed-up, autistic, obssesive-compulsive band geek who's friends with a senior who incapacitates people by poking them in the neck (he taught me how, it's very fun).

My teachers are very awesome. English 10 isn't so bad, even when I'm the only freshman. The whole class started discussing zombies and where they would hide during the zombie apocalypse.

In anthropology my teacher revealed that he also had OCD, showing us his perfectly sorted books and mentioning that he would have to move all the desks again after class. He talked about how apparently natives in Zambia started worshipping a Coke bottle that someone had just thrown away and got into a war over it, and considered showing us the first part of the movie (before, according to him, the people got naked). We also get field trips, which we never ever had in middle school except for one yearly, usually very boring (except in sixth grade, which was the zoo). He's going to set us loose somewhere to study how people behave in a group, maybe at the zoo or at the nearby shopping center (bringing up a funny mental image of hiding behind shelves and watching people play video games at Best Buy).

In Spanish, the teacher is going to be away for a couple of days (for golf), so we're starting up by watching a movie in Spanish, called Pan's Labyrinth. Apparently it's rated R, but he says it's probably just for the language, but, in his own words, "that doesn't matter, because it's all in Spanish!" The only swear word I know in Spanish is puta, which I learned from YouTube :3

Geometry is a decent but not necessarily fun class like I mentioned. We'll have homework every night, but guess what? Math has been that way for years and it sucked. I already completed my homework for the weekend, it was just a review of algebra that took me all of 2 or 3 minutes. According to my senior friend, the teacher has her "creepy moments," where the classroom becomes like 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the school and you start looking at the frozen side of Hell. I asked him about that, and he said that she gets really freaked out over math, which doesn't seem so bad. Her eyes get kind of wide sometimes and she starts ranting, but it's not really bad, seriously :/

Geography isn't really anything new. I mean, we'll be studying, well... geography. I have the same teacher for that class as anthropology (naturally), but he lets his student teacher take over for that class. She's really nice, but still teacherly, and mostly follows the way he does things in a female voice (except the weird comments, which is where he takes charge).

The science teacher is probably the most amusing to listen to. Apparently he's only been teaching for one year, but he talks just like the students. I mean, he uses every term that this generation knows, and throws those "mini-cuss words" out there all the time, he's constantly saying "crap" and "freaking" and at one point today he began to use the word "ass," which is weirdly funny coming from a really tall guy like him. Speaking of which, all of the teachers at this school district are freakishly tall, especially men (except my geography/anthropology teacher, he's well-known for being short, and I believe most freshman are actually taller than him). I have only ever met two people who could ever grow to be that tall without taking a special diet or steroids or something, one of which is a band nerd that I've known for years and is in my grade, the other being a tall guy who already has a beard and mustache who is also in my grade.

The marching band has a parade tomorrow aaah. It's supposed to be a mile or two, and I will surely pass out halfway through it. I begin feeling lightheaded after our practice runs, which are two blocks long.

Oh wait I almost forgot. I am planning for a career in science (particularly astronomy), and these are some of the (elective) courses I'd really like to take. I trust you guys because a lot of you have experience, so uh what do you guys think:

Expository writing ("strongly recommended for college-bound students")
Spanish IV or AP Spanish
Pre-Calculus or AP Calculus
Finance math (really needed because I don't understand money works at all)
Jazz band
Astronomy
Geology (maybe)
Human anatomy and physiology
AP Biology (possibly)
Chemistry or advanced chemistry
Physics
Driver's Ed (wasn't mentioned in the curriculum guide, but it's probably there)

With any free time, I'd also enjoy applying as an elementary teacher assistant in my senior year or a peer tutor in junior or senior year.

Finally, I've heard that volunteer work is necessary in high school. I was planning to volunteer at the library. I think it'd be good since I love books and take good care of them, it's close by, and also I have OCD and am picky about books being in order, which is actually a benefit at that job.

This is probably the longest post I've ever made, but I have gone all summer without rambling to anyone and I must let it out now.

what does "Puta" mean? O.o

Something like 'female dog' or wh*re. o3o I remember when I was about 6 years old I was playing with my panda toy and I made her say that. My mom came over to me and told me that was a nasty word, and when I was older she told me what it was. :3
