So I had my last band concert just now. We had a banquet beforehand where they do some end-of-the-year stuff, recognize some people, point out the people in all the bands, etc. As well as give out a few awards.
Well of course I wasn't surprised that I got the massive participation award - that one goes to any student that's in three or more of the bands (of which there are five, although normally two of them are mutually exclusive). There are three kids in the band like that - last year's marching band drum major, who's in marching band, jazz band, symphonic band, and freshman band (normally freshman and symphonic bands are mutually exclusive but due to scheduling issues there's some non-freshmen in freshman band), last year's trumpet section leader, who's in jazz band, symphonic band and marching band, and me.
The band director did point out (and by pointing it out, successfully made me warm inside that he pointed it out <3) that he saw me more than any other student in the entire band. I was in marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, and jazz band - as well as being in AP Music Theory. Four of my eight classes were with the same teacher, and since he only teaches six classes I was in 2/3 of his schedule.
But there were also awards later. The awards that are awarded to only one person (sometimes two) each year, the ones where it's like "this person has these qualities over everyone else".
I... I won one. Unsung Hero.
I wasn't necessarily expecting it, but goddamn was I happy. The award, like the other big awards in the band, gets put on a small plaque on the wall. In other words my legacy is going to live on in the band room forever. The thought of that is just... I don't know. I started crying later, crying with happiness at the fact that I'd come this far since my disastrous freshman year, crying with sadness that this was the end of my last year and this was my last concert, crying at everything and anything.
But in the end I'm really happy. I had a great concert and reflected again on how much I can make an impact on people from behind the scenes. If nothing else, that would be, to me, something worth living for. <3
