Arena: Martian Desert

The cold surface of Mars is covered with rust-red dust. Tall mountains tower in the distance. The arena is on a rough surface of rocks, pebbles, and dust. It is illuminated faintly by starlight and moonlight. Gravity is lower; Pokemon weigh less, which affects their movement and attacks to a certain extent. Oxygen is low as well- this may stress out the Pokemon, sapping away at their energy.

1. Keta sends out.
2. Minnow sends out and attacks.
3. Keta attacks.

I'll send out my Eevee, Nikolai.

Okay, go ahead and start out with Attract. If Zherahil is infatuated, take the opportunity to use Toxic, and if not, use Swift. If Zherahil was and is still infatuated, use Captivate, otherwise Dig down and stay under. Also, if at any time she puts you to sleep, just use Snore.

Zherahil- begin with a Confuse Ray, positioning it between yourself and Nikolai so that it will be harder for both of you to see each other for your first move. Next, take the offensive with a Magical Leaf attack. Finally, finish with a Double Team.

Confuse Ray~Magical Leaf~Double Team

All is quiet on the empty surface of Mars, save for the distant humming of atmosphere generators set up in a wide, vaguely elliptical array. The sun and stars, blindingly brilliant with only a thin haze of atmosphere to diffuse their light, are screened by a faint, flickering field of energy that bounds an area where minimum requirements for life are maintained. For the moment, no life has actually arrived to take advantage of this enclave of habitability on the broad and hostile planet. Red rocks of various sizes stretch on as far as the eye can see, rising up into jagged, barren mountains in the distance. Here and there, the dust is marred by footprints, but of what creature might have made these footprints there is initially no sign.

The arena doesn't stay empty for long, though. A rumble in the distance grows steadily in volume, to the level of a droning thrum and, shortly, an outright roar. A slow-moving old hovervehicle, metallic exterior dulled by age and rusted by a fine coating of martian dust, chugs into the environment-controlled zone, spluttering afterburners kicking up great clouds of red dust as it settles to the ground. Even as the hulking machine powers down, a hatch on its underbelly opens and a ramp descends, allowing the three people to disembark: the trainers Keta and Minnow and the referee Negrek, all three of them brought to this place by mutual agreement. This empty expanse of martian ground is about to be transformed into a battleground.

Keta and Minnow split up and head off towards opposite ends of the arena, bouncing along as they enjoy the effects of reduced gravity, while the ref idles near the lander, leaning up against one of its bent struts and lazily awaiting the battle's start. Keta is the first to make a move, selecting a pokéball from her belt and flicking it to the ground in front of her. It bursts open to release a small ralts named Zherahil, who stares around at her surroundings with undisguised awe. Minnow is quick to counter with Nikolai the eevee, who sneezes upon release, the gritty red dust kicked up by his entrance irritating his sensitive nose. Pokémon and trainers stare each other down before, in a rush of shouted commands, the battle begins.

Round One

Zherahil (F)
Health: 100%
Energy: 100%
- In awe at the emptiness all around her.

Minnow (OO)
eevee
Nikolai (M)
Health: 100%
Energy: 100%
- Not sure he likes this place.

While Nikolai is still recovering from his sneezing fit, Zherahil crafts an illusion, raising her hands in front of her face as a glittering ball of light begins to collect between them. As Nikolai looks up, he finds his view of the ralts obscured by the pulsing ball of light, made blurry and flickering by the tears that fill his eyes. Despite himself, he is transfixed with wonder as the confuse ray attack splits off into several smaller parts, specks of flickering energy pulling away and circling around the main mass of the attack. Zherahil releases the attack and gives it a gentle shove towards its target. Nikolai watches, open-mouthed, as the glittering illusion bobs closer to him, wobbling and dancing through the air in an erratic fashion.

The eevee forces himself to get a grip, though. He's in the midst of a battle, after all, and getting distracted by pretty flashing lights isn't the best way to go about winning. He's supposed to be attracting Zherahil, right? So, putting all thoughts of confuse ray out of his mind, the eevee grooms as much of the dust out of his ruff as he can, puts on his most seductive expression, and sidles a little closer to Zherahil.

Doing his best display of animal magnetism, the eevee struts his stuff and professes his undying love for Zherahil as he goes, now and then flicking an annoyed ear back at the confuse ray, which has now taken to circling his head and dancing, just out of reach, in front of his nose. At first the ralts is merely annoyed, then amused by the eevee's display; as time wears on, she finds herself feeling genuinely sorry for the eevee. He seems like such a nice guy--and cute, too--and all she's done so far is cause him undue grief.

Orders are orders, though, and it is with minimal hesitation that Zherahil starts drawing up her next attack. This time her hands glow with a shifting rainbow of colors as a multitude of bright specks of light gather in the air around them. These grow in size and take on the shapes of leaves as they do so, pulsing every color of the spectrum. Casting them forward with a flick of her hands, Zherahil watches with some guilt as the flurry of pure-energy leaves swarm Nikolai from all directions and rip through his thick fur with brutal efficiency.

Dejected--did his attract attack not work?--the eevee winces beneath the stinging flurry of blows, then immediately starts generating his own attack. He starts to spin around, intending to sweep his tail through the air and send a cluster of energy stars at Zherahil. The confuse ray distracts him at an inopportune moment, however, and he ends up slipping and collapsing in the dust rather than pulling off his attack as planned.

As soon as she sees Nikolai go down, all thoughts of double team flee from Zherahil's mind. She rushes to Nikolai's side, apologizing for how she's hurt him and begging his forgiveness. Though still a bit dazed from the sudden fall and the ever-present confuse ray, the eevee hams it up, playing the victim and doing everything he can to engender Zherahil's sympathy. Flustered and totally absorbed in her concern for Nikolai, Zherahil's mind is unquiet and disorganized, far from the keen weapon that it usually is.

Right, Zherahil, you need to remember that Nikolai's not truly interested in romance of any sort. We'll soon see the truth. Use a Charm attack to weaken his attack. Next, use a Hypnosis; if he Protects, change it to a Reflect. Last, finish off with a Safeguard just in case.

Charm~Hypnosis/Reflect~Safeguard

Ok , Nikolai, try to get in a quick hit with Quick Attack. If you fall asleep go ahead and use Sleep Talk. If not then hit Zherahil with a Toxic. Finish up with Yawn.

Zherahil is so absorbed in Nikolai's apparent innocence and genuine hurt that she doesn't notice the eevee's muscles tensing, his paws sinking into the dusty ground as he prepares to push off. Before Zherahil realizes what's happened, the eevee explodes forward, kicking up a great puff of dust as he hurtles straight into Zherahil and then keeps going, leaving a messy track through the Martian dust. Zherahil, still kneeling where she was before but now blinking with consternation and covered in little reddish pawprints, remains frozen for a couple of seconds, trying to work out what has happened. Then the pain catches up with her, and the ralts winces, struggling to a full standing position again and turning to face Nikolai. The eevee is standing at a good distance away, his eyes occasionally sliding out of focus as he is badgered by the illusion of confuse ray. Though hurt, Zherahil feels as though the eevee's behavior must be a result of his distrust, fueled by her reckless attacks on him earlier in the match. Only too eager to patch their perceived relationship up, the ralts cautiously starts moving in Nikolai's direction, doing her best to look injured (not difficulty, given that she is) and begging the eevee's forgiveness, all the while emanating psychic broadcasts that make the eevee more likely to draw favorable conclusions from her advances. Despite himself, Nikolai does feel a bit bad about the quole quick attack thing--Zherahil was only trying to help him up, after all.

Coming to a halt a few paces in front of Nikolai, Zherahil spends a couple moments agonizing over her next command. Something like hypnosis hardly seems polite, after all, and she's already done more than enough to cause Nikolai misery this round. An unhappy glance back at her trainer reveals that Keta is unmoved, however, and Zherahil reluctantly sets out to comply with orders. In the end, she values her relationship with her trainer more than her relationship with Nikolai, if only just.

Zherahil locks eyes with Nikolai. The eevee stares straight back, unable to look away no matter how much he struggles. Zherahil begins to beam soothing messages to his mind, causing him to relax and slip into an abrupt, heavy slumber. The eevee wobbles, eyelids drooping, then at last collapses in a sound sleep. Almost immediately after he hits the ground, though, he starts muttering and twitching before, to Zherahil's surprise, standing back up. The eevee's eyes are still firmly closed as he sweeps his bushy tail across the ground, whipping up a cloud of dust that envelops Zherahil. The ralts raises her hands in a vain attempt to shield her face, coughing and with eyes watering from the abrasive grit.

Nikolai flops back over again and the dust starts to settle, leaving Zherahil rubbing at her face, trying to get the dust out of her eyes with little success. Miffed, she sets up a weak energy field around her body, a green barrier sliding out from her skin. She stares down at Nikolai, trying to figure out what's up with the eevee. As she watches, he stirs and rolls over, effecting a massive yawn as he does so. At least Zherahil thinks he does--everything's very blurry at the moment, and in any case, she doesn't feel any effects save puzzlement at the possible attack.

Since you're asleep for now, just Sleep Talk until you wake up. If you wake up on the second action, Dig down a bit and just Chill down there. If you wake up on the third action, go ahead and Dig down anyway. If you don't wake up at all, just keep Sleep Talking.

Zherahil, first, use a Psych Up to bring your stats up to par. Next, take the offensive with a Dream Eater, followed by a Psychic. If Nikolai is actively digging during any of the last two actions, convert your attack(s) to Calm Mind.

Closing her eyes, Zherahil does her best to focus on Nikolai's sleeping mind, reading his mental state in order to alter her own. The eevee, of course, isn't having any sight problems, and there's no thought in his mind of mitigating the damage he deals to Zherahil--proof if it were ever necessary that he is quite willing to use the ralts' feelings to his advantage. Zherahil grits her teeth in anger and absorbs his confidence, letting her eyes wash themselves free of sand and restoring herself to usual ready-for-battle status.

Meanwhile, Nikolai is contentedly dreaming, his commands tickling at deep corners of his unconscious mind and unlocking his abilities without his realizing it. The eevee murmurs and paws a bit at the dust, body sparkling with energy for a moment before Negrek snaps her fingers and casts an imprison on him. "No sparkles for you," she grumbles as she marks something down next to the eevee's name on her clipboard.

After taking a good look around the arena to celebrate her restored powers of vision, Zherahil once again reaches into Nikolai's mind, this time with a more destructive purpose. Reaching out for the dream he is currently enjoying, of playing with some of his friends out in a big grassy field, she seizes hold of it and tears it free of the eevee's mind. Nikolai stiffens and groans, mumbling again, while Zherahil absorbs the happy dream into her own psyche, harnessing its energy to completely restore her bruised body and increase her energy.

She has only a moment of respite, though, before Nikolai jumps to his feet and charges right at her, blackness dripping from his stubby teeth as he opens his mouth and clamps down on Zherahil's arm. The ralts squeals and tries to shake the eevee off, which isn't difficult--after a couple seconds of chewing, the Nikolai goes limp and slides down into the dust, fully asleep again.

Zherahil backs away, clutching her bleeding arm and watching the sleeping eevee suspiciously. For the moment he appears harmless, though the blood around his mouth suggests otherwise. Grimly, Zherahil dives into his subconscious, wresting free the new dream that had been spawning there, about, annoyingly enough, winning a battle against a certain ralts. Once again the eevee moans and stirs, breathing nonsense syllables as he falls under the grip of a sleep talk attack while Zherahil digests his dream, the pale skin on her arm closing over the wound left by the bite attack.

Once more Nikolai rises to his feet, not bothering to shake the clotted red dust from his fur, and pounces on Zherahil. All he does this time is swipe halfheartedly at her with his paws, his movements sluggish and largely ineffective. When he drops back to the ground in total sleep again, Zherahil is left little more than bruised and miffed by his odd choice of attacks.

Ok, well, since it worked fine before and you can't really do much else, just keep using Sleep Talk while you're asleep. When/if you wake up go ahead and Dig down like I said earlier and Chill down there. However, if the soil is proving hard to Dig through because of it's dustiness or it's compacted or whatever then use Take Down. If you still have another action then use Curse.

If you can Dig down and you have another action after Chilling then try to cave in your tunnel entrance a little bit to make a little closed up cave for yourself.

Hmmm, that was a lot more complex than it needed to be. Sorry for taking so long.

Bringing her hands together in front of her face, Zherahil concentrates, smearing her energy signature out through the air around her. To any observer, it would look like the air around the ralts became blurred and warped, shivering images of her sweeping back and forth around her, flickering in and out of existence in a chaotic dance. At last, a couple of the illusions grow more stable and coalesce, forming a pair of clones that hide the real ralts in their midst. The three psychic-types are briefly outlined in an ethereal green veil, but the safeguard ebbs rapidly, though Zherhahil doesn't appear bothered by its departure.

Nikolai is oblivious to this silent process, though. Coming slowly out of his unnaturally deep sleep, the eevee groans and opens his eyes, wondering why he feels so drained. He's so out of it that the sight of two new ralts on Keta's side of the field doesn't even faze him, at least not initially. With confusion still fogging his brain, he considers them to be no more than ordinary hallucinations. Despite the confuse ray's flickering, irritating dance, he starts digging, sluggishly at first but picking up speed as he comes fully awake.

The soil on mars is diffuse and chalky, but with a bit of determination Nikolai is able to make a decent dent in it, hollowing out a tunnel maybe three and a half feet deep. At the base of it, the eevee, now dusted in red from head to tailtip, curls up and starts to doze again. This time, though, his nap is much more relaxed, his mind no longer tormented by Zherahil's psychic meddling.

The ralts, in fact, is concentrating on matters within her own head. She stands in a trance above Nikolai's hole, silent and concentrated on nothing more than emptying her mind of emotion and distraction, focusing all her energy on the battle at hand. This continues for several minutes before she at last brings up her hands and flickers into another double team, the distortion of reality making it look as though she's moving at top speed while in fact she's standing still, surrounding herself with more illusionary companions. Nikolai, still chilling at the bottom of his hole, is unaffected as two more eerily silent copies of Zherahil ripple into being, giving her a complement of no fewer than four clones.

Oh, wow, I totally forgot. I wasn't really thinking about forum stuff for most of the week because of it being down for a couple days. Hmm, I have an ungodly amount of schoolwork to do today... But I can post when I'm done, probably sometime after 11:00. Maybe later. I'm sorry, I'll definitely do it tonight.

EDIT:

Ok, Nikolai, first protect yourself with Detect, then lower Zherahil's special defense with Fake Tears. Finish up with Swift. Additionally, if you can, try to use Swift from inside your tunnel, but if not then try to fall back into your tunnel when you've finished.

Detect~Fake Tears~Swift

Okay, here I am. I have no excuse for not doing it last night (Well, I do, but it's not a good one).

And by this point, Keta is definitely DQ'd. Minnow wins $8, I get $5, and both pokémon get one EXP.
