The playground is silent and empty as Byrus hops over the fence, looking around at the wide expanse of rubber flooring. The weather is mostly good, with a bright blue sky filled with wispy clouds, so that's a plus, he thinks. Battling in the rain kinda takes away the fun atomosphere, too bad rain dance is so popular. Whistling, the ref paces up and down as he waits for the battlers to arrive, before freezing suddenly as he sees two stragglers messing around in the sand pit. Child abuse is funny, but getting sued isn't, so Byrus quickly hurries over to shoo them away so they don't get injured in the upcoming battle.
The two kids look up irritably as Byrus approaches the sand pit, glaring down at them. “Didn’t your teacher give you the memo? The TCOD ASB has this place booked for a battle,” he says pompously, waving the piece of paper about.
Looking decidedly unimpressed, the two children nevertheless scurry away, while one of the kids throws a lego brick back at Byrus, hitting him square on the head.
Scowling, the ref turns away, trying to appear nonchalant, only to be greeted by the two battlers. o_O and Flareth stare at him, one with a barely concealed grin and the other with an odd look on his face.
“Wha? Did you teleport here or something?” Byrus mutters, gaze suddenly fixed firmly on the rubber ground. “Uh…. well, doesn’t matter. Hey, emotion dude, you got a nickname? For convenience and all that.”
“Call me Patrick then,” the trainer with the disturbed expression on his face says. Flareth looks at him curiously, hoping that he isn’t wearing that expression because of something she did….
Byrus nods (How does he do that expression?), then takes his place at the edge of the playground. “All right, you send out first.”
Glad to get his first battle started, Patrick takes a Pokéball and throws it onto the ground. Blaise Pascal the Charmander appears in a burst of white light, stretching out his limbs as he prepares for battle. The little orange lizard blinks curiously, taking in his surroundings, before tensing, his tail flame flaring up and crackling merrily.
After a moment of thought, Flareth follows up with her pick: Riley the Riolu. As the fighting canine materializes, he utters a few eager barks, while enthusiastically punching the air and bouncing around.

Round one
As his over eager opponent continues bouncing about, Blaise Pascal takes a deep breath and opens his jaws, where a flickering orb of blue fire flares into life. When the ghostly blue fire begins spill out of his jaws in thin streams of sparks, Blaise spits it out in Riley’s general direction. The will-o-wisp hovers for a moment, almost as if wondering what direction it ought to go in, before zooming about drunkenly.
Riley holds still for a moment as he takes in the surreal sight of the phantom fire weaving around erratically, wisps of shimmering flames trailing behind it.
As Riley backs away, the fire darts forward sharply, bombing down to the left side of the Riolu and vanishing in a flash of blue flames, leaving a sooty patch in its wake. Blaise grits his fangs in annoyance at the miss, while Riley cheerfully yips in relief before acting on his own command.
Riley abruptly begins to dance, whirling about wildly, limbs flailing as he pounds along to the well known war-dance. Although the Riolu’s steps are in sync with his own mental rhythm, Blaise just scoffs at Riley’s crazy jig, turning his gaze away before the blue blur makes him dizzy.
Crazy or not, the dance is effective enough, Riley is even more pepped as he comes to a sudden halt. Uttering a few loud barks, Riley holds up his fists, doing some more air punching.
Blaise’s tail swishes in annoyance as he opens his jaws again, white fangs glinting. Determined not to miss this time, Blaise spits out another orb of blue phantom fire. Riley eyes the orb without much fear, the last one wasn’t impressive, so he doesn’t expect much from this one. Unfortunately, Riley’s luck doesn’t hold this time--the ethereal comet streams downwards, striking him on his left arm.
Yelping, Riley desperately waves his arm about, batting out the flames with his right, and hopping from foot to foot. Blaise snickers at the comical sight, glad to have wiped the smirk off his opponent’s face.
When he catches sight of the jeering Charmander, Riley takes a deep breath and forces himself to calm down, before inspecting his arm. The fur is blackened, while the flesh underneath is raw and tender. Grimacing, Riley quickly averts his gaze. A minor inconvenience is all it is, and he’s sure he can manage it.
Speaking of inconveniences, Riley has another one. His trainer has ordered him to use rock slide, an attack he’s familiar with of course… Except there’s no rocks handy. Not wanting to give up so easy, Riley hastily scans the arena, peering at the sandpit, the climbing structure…. Without so much as a pebble in sight, he’s forced to give up on that particular order.
Feeling a tad more confident, Blaise hastily runs towards the climbing structure. The first missed attack didn’t seem to have cost him, no point staying mad over it.
His opponent seems pretty passive for the moment, Blaise has no idea what he was looking for, but whatever it was, he didn’t seem to find it. Gripping onto the climbing wall with hooked claws, Blaise hauls himself up, sneaking a few glances back at Riley over his shoulder. The wall isn’t too high, so he doesn’t have much problems reaching the top, where he ducks down behind one of the barriers on the structure, with only the top of his head visible as he peeps over it.
Annoyed at missing his chance to attack, Riley keeps an eye on the orange speck before stomping harshly on the ground. The muffled impact of his stomp on the rubber ground isn’t impressive, but Riley continues to stomp undeterred, seeking a fault line. The floor makes it difficult, but Riley eventually manages. A low rumble is heard as the ground begins to shake, jolting the sandpit and the climbing frame, though not really having much impact on the rubber surface. Blaise quickly digs his claws into the frame, hanging on tight. The little lizard is shaken about by the quake, and flung around about like a rag doll as he struggles to get a grip again. When the tremors fade, Blaise staggers to his feet, gripping onto the railing for balance.
Meanwhile, Riley stands on tip-toes in an attempt to spot his opponent, irritably rubbing his burnt skin. Hoping any climbing he might have to do won't agitate it, Riley keeps his fists up and his eyes on the orange speck.

Battle notes
- Earthquake’s power was reduced from Blaise Pascal being on the structure, plus the rubber flooring absorbing most of the shockwaves.
- Rock slide needs rocks around to work.
- o_O attacks first.
