Status: Attack +6; still getting used to feeling this pumped; ears have just started ringing
Hippocampus's Commands: Bide ~ Bide ~ Bide

Arena: Imperial City ruins

The Imperial City used to be teeming with activity. However, with the fall of the Empire, it was quickly weathered down to an almost flat ground. Although it was tall enough to be seen from anywhere in Cyrodiil, even White Gold Tower has been reduced to nothing but dust. The only thing that still stands intact is the Temple Cauldron which is protected by the power of the Divine, Akatosh.

During each round, there is a 20% chance of the Divine, Talos, joining his power with that of Akatosh and causing the Dragonfires to ignite in the cauldron for 5 rounds. Its mysterious energy raises the power of Fire and Dragon type moves by 1.25 times the normal amount. However, the spirit of the flame burns brightly in the hearts of all Pokemon which cancels all effects of the Burn status other than the damage.

The presence of the two Divines suppresses evil, causing all Dark type moves to do only 3/4 of the normal damage. Also, Dark type Support moves have no effect (meaning that Nasty Plot would be useless, but Crunch can still lower your Defense).

Round Five: Begin

The strange energy rush still tingles in Hippocampus's limbs, and in spite of himself he feels as though a good run or something would feel great; it feels odd having to force himself to sit still, then, to watch and wait for his opponent to make a move. A faint, reddish glow surrounds the Slowpoke's body as he stares straight ahead. Ben doesn't know what his sluggish foe is planning, but whatever it was he would rather interrupt it before it gets a chance to start. He tries to relax his muscles in preparation for a breakneck sprint, but they seize up yet again and send him sprawling to the muddy earth. He jerks and struggles against his own body, but to no avail--he cannot relax and he cannot move, and so he has no choice but to glare through the thinning rain as Hippocampus... does nothing.

This puzzles Ben. Why isn't Hippocampus doing anything? The blasted pink oaf had a perfect window to attack and didn't take it? But he's glowing and everything... Ben just knows that something bad is coming, and so he fights even harder to move, to strike, to get out of the way. His aching muscles absolutely refuse to cooperate, however. Hippocampus continues to glow, stare, wait and be generally boring. He is growing so antsy that he is almost literally itching to move; c'mon, space-blocking Buizel, do something...

There is nothing left for Ben to do, however. His body still stiff and his options all but exhausted, he simply continues his erratic, miserable twitching. After a few more seconds of waiting Hippocampus sighs and lets the glow fade away unused. Well. That was a waste of perfectly good time. Time he could've spent jogging off this awkward feeling so that he could go back to staring into space, even. Just lovely.

Hippocampus is not overly bothered when the rain slows to a halt and the last few drops splash off of his nose, but Ben is rather upset. The rain clouds crawl lazily away, slowly revealing the low-hanging sun in the sky. Oh, great, and now the rain is gone, too. The only good that has come of an entire round of inaction, confusion and bad luck is a chance to rest his limbs a bit more; sure, the spasms were painful, but the by the time his muscles relax his forced resting seems to have taken just a bit more of the edge off of his paralysis. Now if only he could put this increase in flexibility to good use!

Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Come ON!

Start with a Hail. After that, if he starts to attack, use Me First. Otherwise, use Headbutt.

Uh-oh, Hail's can't be good!

He looks like he's getting a bit run down, now's our chance to take this fight!

Use another Rain Dance so if the hail comes, you'll have twice as much speed to dodge it with, then use Agility and charge straight at him but don't attack him. That should fool him into using Me First. Finish up with a nasty Toxic!

Round Six: Begin

It takes a few more seconds of stretching for Ben to really feel like he can resume the dancing he'd done earlier. He hops doggedly around the cauldron, a bit stiffer than before, and the clouds that only a few minutes ago had started to retreat now begin to crawl back over the sky. The sun is now close enough to the horizon to remain visible even with the clouds overhead; even so, when the first raindrops begin to fall, the ruined city is now largely darker than it was earlier.

Hippocampus is too tired and anxious to pay the renewed rainfall much mind. He closes his eyes, tries not to think about how nice it would be to just keep them closed and go to sleep, and then begins to twitch his tail about. The tail's movements are slow and deliberate, nowhere near as active as the frenetic ritual dance Ben has just finished; nonetheless, the erratic tail-waving and the intense mental prayer the Slowpoke puts behind it seems to convince the weather gods to change their mind, and the rain in the clouds overhead quickly freezes into large, ping-pong sized hailstones. Ben yelps as some of the ice balls strike his head and tail. He would glare up at the sky for turning on him so quickly, but he doesn't want to risk getting any hail in his still tender eyes.

Ben dashes forward all of a sudden, running at Hippocampus as if he is about to attack. He snarles and growls and bristles for effect, trying to stifle any further hail-induced yelps as he runs. Hippocampus's dozy brain struggles as his opponent approaches. Ben is clearly about to attack, right? Then he should try to preempt him, right? But by the time he begins preparing his counter strike Ben is already leaping toward him... over him... the Buizel skids to a stop in the wet gravel behind Hippocampus, having landed cleanly behind him without ever touching his foe. He stretches again and shakes a bit more of the stiffness from his limbs, and then congratulates himself on his clever trick. Hippocampus tries to emulate what the otter Pokémon just tried, but he can't really get his mind around exactly what it was that Ben did and by now it's too late to observe it anyway... the Slowpoke snorts and gives up, too tired to worry about wasting any more energy on that ridiculous little stunt.

Now that he is behind Hippocampus and feeling relatively loose, Ben's spirits are high. He creeps closer to the psychic-type's tail end, wretching as something uncomfortable bubbles up in his stomach. With a nasty gagging sound he vomits a viscous, purple liquid all over Hippocampus's rear. Hippocampus is already halfway through his turn by the time he feels the poison eating through his skin and turning it raw; he's far too exhausted to care about it at this point, however. He lunges forward with one last burst of energy, slamming his head into Ben's belly and bowling him over. All of Hippocampus's antsiness--and, in fact, all of the energy he has left--seems to rush out of him with that last lunge; the Slowpoke continues forward under his momentum and slumps to the ground, sliding for a few inches before coming to a stop. His wide, blank eyes flicker shut and he sighs. No more edginess... a nice, long rest at last... wow, the insides of my eyelids sure look...

Hail: 4 rounds remaining

Ref's Notes
-Two weather conditions cannot exist at the same time unless some ruling in the arena specifically says so, so Hail overrode Rain Dance as it normally would.
-I think I should mention something--I'm getting the impression that, on occasion, you two are ordering commands that assume Hippocampus will be moving first. Just because Ben is paralyzed doesn't mean he's automatically going to move last. Even paralyzed, Buizel is much, much faster than Slowpoke.
-Given that, Me First failed because it requires the user to be faster than its target. Of course, it would've failed anyway because Ben successfully tricked Hippocampus, but yeah.
-Hippocampus ran out of energy and fainted on the third action. Headbutt's damage was reduced slightly because he didn't have quite enough energy to pull off a full-power attack.
-Blastoise sends out and attacks first next round.

Round Seven: Begin

As Ben sucks in a few good lungfuls of air to get his wind back, the now completely comatose Hippocampus is replaced by a much more energetic female Electrike with sparkling blue fur. Koutus gives the air a curious sniff and is immediately rewarded with a golf ball-sized hailstone to the tip of the nose; she yelps and paws at her face. The sharp cry jolts Ben's attention back to the battle at hand, and he stands up after taking one last deep breath. He frowns irritably as he trots forward--oh, joy, an electric-type--and closes in on the distracted Koutus. More foul-tasing purple ooze dribbles from the corner of his mouth, and he quickly spits it out and splatters it all over the puppy's clean, shiny coat. Koutus's yelping quickly turns into angry snarling as her skin begins to burn beneath the acidic toxins, and without even turning around she unleashes a blast of electrical energy that fans out in a wide radius. With a scream Ben falls over onto the hail-strewn ground, painfully reminded of the zap cannon that had shocked him back at the beginning of the battle. It isn't quite as horrific, and at least it doesn't cause his muscles to seize up anew, but it hurts and when the shock wave stops he isn't entirely sure he can get up.

Ben drags himself along the ground with his forepaws, struggling to get just a little bit closer to Koutus before his stamina runs dry. The sea weasel props himself up with a grimace and then opens his mouth. A deep, shuddering breath and then a forceful exhalation sends a concentrated gale of frigid, icy wind and water droplets that freeze instantly; the falling hail immediately around him changes course and rushes in the same direction, carried directly into a very angry Koutus. A barrage of ice and hail pummels her face and sides, driving her back several feet. The blizzard stops and Koutus, cold and stinging, blinks a thin layer of frost out of her eyes. What the...

Another shock wave ripples out from Koutus's body, cracking the icy film coating her fur and zapping the unfortunate Buizel just a few feet away. What little strength Ben had remaining gives out; when his twitching and shuddering stops he lies completely still, limp and motionless even as the hailstones continue to bounce off of his back.

Round Eight: Begin

Before Koutus or her fresh new opponent, a female Houndour whose name is incredibly similar to her predecessor's and so is going to confuse the tar out of the referee, can so much as bat an eyelid, some of the heavy gray hail clouds overhead part and a brilliant beam of pure, white light streaks down from the heavens. The beam hits squarely inside the smoldering bowl of the cauldron and the low-burning flames immediately blaze into life. The beam fades away and the clouds resume their position but the fire rages on, a veritable rainbow of flames dancing away and casting multicolored light on the scattered hail and debris all around them.

The light show is certainly beautiful, and Bel of all Pokémon can appreciate the elegant, hypnotic waving and dancing of a good fire, but at the moment its presence is making her quite uncomfortable. Ben apparently managed to put a little hurt on the Electrike in front of her before he went down but she's still looking a little too chipper for the hellhound's tastes. She'd dearly love to be concocting a few schemes for remedying that "chipper" situation, but try as she might the Houndour cannot force a single vicious thought into her head. It feels almost as if the flames in the cauldron are... burning away all of her potential wicked plans. She snorts, frustrated, and sits down in the hail-strewn rubble.

What luck! Koutus thinks, short tail twitching back and forth at high speed. She isn't really sure why her opponent is wearing that look of consternation on her face, but hey--anything that has Bel upset can only be good for her. She grins at the Houndour, biting back half-formed yelps from the hail falling on her head in favor of some nice derisive laughter. What's the matter, Loser? Having a bad day? Mine's going great. I get to sit back here and watch you screw up! Do it again, Loser! Screw up again; this hail's getting on my nerves and I could use a good chuckle. Maybe you could trip on a brick, or use the wrong attack, or... aw, heck. Why don't you just surprise me? A mystery screw-up, that'd be just the ticket!

Hackles raised and eyes narrowed, Bel takes a few menacing steps forward. She can't believe her ears--thirty seconds out here and this uppity cone-headed blue thing is already busting her chops? The Houndour's lips curl back in a vicious snarl and she vents her spleen, railing away at the audacity of her opponent and calling her every inappropriate name she can think of. (If only being nasty had come so easily before...) Koutus continues her tail-wagging unabated, convinced that she's done her job well. She remains unfazed by Bel's rabid insults until one seemingly simple word, almost tossed out as an afterthought, catches her attention.

Ugly?

The Electrike bristles suddenly, eyes flashing and any traces of composure or confidence flying out the window. Ugly? Bel thinks she's ugly? Surely not her, with her rare and exquisite azure coat that sparkles and glows in the sunlight like the most gorgeous of vampires! Rage wells up in Koutus's little body as Bel goes on and on about how tacky that glittery look is, how hideously the blue clashes with the yellow. Just as the Houndour is about to start on Koutus's nasty Xenomorph-shaped skull the electric-type cuts her short with a blood-curdling howl of fury. Bel flinches, shrinking back toward the cauldron and away from her opponent's horrible wailing, but no amount of scooting away or pawing at her ears can block out the sound; the deafening din rattles her brain and worsens her already throbbing headache.

Koutus doesn't feel any better even after screaming her heart out. Bel's snide, clearly jealous comments are still sticking to the front of her mind like glue. And Bel, still feeling quite riled herself does not intend to to give her any respite. An aura of roiling darkness emanates from the hellhound's body, quickly engulfing her in black energy; the iridescent light cast by the cauldron's flames seems to wick some of the aura away, but Bel pays it no mind and charges forward with her fangs bared. She falls upon Koutus with rabid ferocity, biting and pummeling every inch of her foe she can reach. Koutus's "ugly" blue fur hides the horrible bruises she receives from the vicious beatings, and the determined expression on her face hides the resulting pain she feels; ignoring the injuries and the hail still drumming against her head and back, she opens her own mouth and fires a beam of blinding white energy at Bel. The secret power strikes covers the tiny distance between the two and strikes Bel almost instantly, driving her back a few feet. Koutus snaps her mouth shut and glares at her; Bel returns the evil eye with equal ardor, oblivious to the chunks of ice bouncing off of her skull plate and focused on the lovely image of a bloody, half-eaten Koutus playing in her head.

Round Nine: Begin

The hail is gradually starting to lift, but for Koutus it isn't stopping fast enough. She's quite sick of the little ice balls constantly drumming away at her head and back--give her a good old-fashioned roaring thunderstorm any day. She crouches down and then leaps into the air, bounding back and forth in a wild, erratic dance and howling up at the sky--

An ear-splitting roar tears through the ruins, drowning out the Electrike's howling and causing her to stop mid-leap. She comes down hard in a stunned tangle of legs, completely startled by Bel's loud, vicious yowling, and looks up at the Houndour with the small hailstones still bouncing off of her. Bel snaps her jaws shut with a curt click, satisfied. No way that ugly little conehead is starting any rain on her watch.

Koutus's eardrums are ringing, her head is pounding, and when she finally picks herself up from the gravel she can barely stand up straight. Her crossed eyes glare in Bel's general direction as she tries to leap into the air again, but she simply trips over her own paws and falls, skidding into a painful collision with the base of the blazing cauldron. Bel sits down, her stump of a tail wagging furiously. She snickers as the dazed Electrike staggers away from the cauldron, but makes no move other than that--Koutus isn't trying to bring on more rain or blast her as far as she can tell, unless tripping over her own legs and smashing her face into a metal pot is supposed to appease the thunder gods or something, so she figures she can rest easy and enjoy her foe's suffering for now.

Sitting on her laurels so soon proves to be a mistake, however. Now that a few minutes have passed Koutus's hearing and senses are returning to her, and she plants her paws firmly on the ground. Blue and yellow hairs all over the electric-type's body stand on end as a charge runs through them. And then, seconds later, a massive lightning bolt hisses down through the sky and slams into Bel. The Houndour's eyes fly open and she screams, hitting the ground instantly. Pain wracks every nerve ending and she twitches and thrashes wildly as the lightning has its way with her. It exits her body at last after several long moments of agony; she stays right where she is as the pain slowly starts to ebb away. Her muscles don't feel especially agreeable at the moment, and the intense shock to her system leaves no room in her head for remembering what she is currently supposed to be doing.

Paralyzed AGAIN?!!! You've got to be kidding me!

Right, this little bitch (it's a female dog...thing, I can say that) has done it now. No more Mrs Nice Houndour. Burn it with Heat Wave, then if you can, try Facade. Give it something else to cry about with a Will-o-Wisp as well. If she looks as if she's going to hit you with a powerful attack, Protect yourself. I don't want you getting hurt too badly.

Heat Wave/Protect ~ Facade/Protect ~ Will-o-Wisp/Protect

I'll keep the 'Thunder' thing in mind, Kratos. ;I

Throw up a Light Screen. Follow with Hidden Power ((let's hope for a Water-or-Ground-type)). End with Rain Dance.

Health: 55%
Energy: 60%
Status: Attack +2; Confused (light), Poisoned (very severe: 2% last round, 3% this); still upset but in a slightly better mood
Koutus's Commands: Light Screen ~ Hidden Power ~ Rain Dance

Round Ten: Begin

A quick shake of the head temporarily clears Koutus's muddied thoughts enough for her to focus on raising a dome of pale, translucent energy. The violet haze shimmers around the Electrike's body; it does little to protect her from the last of the hailstones tumbling down from the heavy gray skies, however. Bel watches the light screen go up from her awkward position on the ground; she's pretty sure she could tear a huge freaking hole right through that barrier if she wanted to, or at least give Koutus a good singeing, but even the tiniest movements, like trying to lift a paw, are met with resistance from her stiff, uncooperative muscles. The Houndour is unable to do anything but lie still and grumble murderously to herself while Koutus waits for an attack that is not coming.

Still relatively safe behind her faint purple forcefield, Koutus hangs on to her focus and does her best to look within. Somewhere, somewhere in the depths of her soul a hidden power lies dormant, and now is the time to draw it out. Hoping fervently that she has the magical ability to drown Bel, or maybe to drop her into a hole in the ground, the electric-type expels this hidden energy as forcibly as she can. Little white spheres rocket out from her blue body, changing color seconds before they collide with the prone Houndour... who snorts as the balls of vibrant green light barely scratch her. Grass power? Koutus wants to kill her with grass? Feh. Epic fail, ugly blue conehead.

The definitively unimpressive hidden power lifts Bel's spirits and, for the time being, she seems to be able to relax her muscles enough to struggle to her feet. Pain and anger have left her vision slightly blurry, but there's no mistaking the blob of garish neon blue several yards in front of her. Bel moves forward, first at an unsteady wobble but then with a purposeful stride; she is sprinting by the time she passes cleanly through the light screen and collides with Koutus, and she gives herself no time to enjoy her restored powers of locomotion before giving the impudent Electrike hell. She bites, scratches, kicks, butts, flails, tearing at every inch of her opponent's sparkly pelt with an unearthly fury. A vicious headbutt to the stomach for the stupid thunder, a wild bite that nearly tears Koutus's tail off for all of the insults, a slash across the muzzle just for breathing. Clumps of fur are missing from the Electrike's body when Bel backs away at last, panting heavily and flashing a deranged, bloodied grin. Koutus, stunned, simply watches her go with a frightened expression on her face.

Too shocked to move for a few moments more, Koutus continues to stare at her attacker in disbelief. Only when Bel's forelegs lock up without warning and she trips and falls does the sore, miserable Electrike relax somewhat; she stands up, still shaky but slightly reassured, and tries once again to perform a rain-summoning dance. Her movements are awkward and jerky and her landings after each leap and pirouette are a little less than sure-footed, but Bel is unable to pick herself up from the muddy slush and the dance is completed without interruption. The gray clouds quickly stretch back across the darkening sky. One or two more tiny hailstones drop from their bellies, followed closely by a deluge of water. Bel snarls and spits from her position on the ground, her muddled mind finally clearing up so that she can fully appreciate just how much all of this water sucks. Koutus doesn't feel much better, however; the rain only serves to make her dirty, bloody fur cling to her body and weigh her down, leaving her uncomfortable and cold. Her mood is not improved by the wave of renewed nausea that washes over her as the poison in her bloodstream continues to overtake her.

Hail: ended
Cauldron fire: 2 rounds remaining
Rain Dance: 4 rounds, 2 actions remaining

Ref's Notes
-Bel was fully paralyzed on the first action.
-Koutus's Hidden Power is grass-type. Just one off of water on the chart I used, too. Darn the luck.
-Strenuous movement while paralyzed costs Bel around 1% extra energy per action.
-Aaand she was fully paralyzed again on the third action.
-Both battlers' confusion faded at the end of the round; since they are (more or less) calmer now, their attack boosts will fade away by the second action of next round.
-I apologize for the month-long delay. NaNo and an internet connection made of pure fail will do that, though.

No problem. Congrats on finishing NaNo, by the way.

Grr. Pick yourself up, old gal. Start with Mud-Slap, then follow with a combo Discharge/Swift. If you can't pull this off, use Discharge and then another Mud-Slap.

No worries Kratos ^_^ We still wub you :P

Alright Bel, great going with that Facade. We're nearly there, hang in there girl!

I bet Koutus fears your anger will give you the edge in the fight, so try and stop her with a Roar. Next we'll show them your Hidden Power, so launch it full pelt. After that, surprise her with a Sucker Punch right in that ugly muzzle of hers!

Round Eleven: Begin

The rain continues to come down in sheets, turning the gravel, hail and dirt on the ground into a veritable soup. It is no trouble at all, then, for Koutus to reach down, scoop up a bit of mud from the earth and fling it right through her light screen into Bel's eyes. The Houndour stumbles and howls as the tiny stone grains dig into her retinas, momentarily forgetting her original intent as she wipes wildly at her muddied face with a black paw. As her own paws are just as muddy as her foe's, however, she accomplishes precious little; she stops and resigns herself to her discomfort with a gloomy scowl. Hey, at least her next move doesn't require aiming (or risking interruption by sudden spasms, with any luck).

Koutus is not expecting the deafening, feral roar that rips through the city's ruins, even after having heard it once before, and the sudden blast of sound bowls the Electrike over. Every nerve in her head seems to erupt with pain, and even as Bel's roar dies down and the echo fades away a horrible ringing rushes in to fill the void; she can't even hear her own whimpering.

...worse yet, even with her confusion gone her pounding headache is making it too difficult to concentrate on battling, or being angry, or anything other than feeling sorry for herself. Bel doesn't have to be able to see to sense that nothing dangerous is coming her way and that she's done her job well. Sure, the loud noise has given her some mild tinnitus of her own, but through the muddy haze she can sort of make out what looks like a pitiful lump of tacky blue writhing in agony on the ground. Thanking her lucky stars for another attack that requires almost no effort from her tingling muscles, the Houndour shuts her eyes and draws upon the wellsprings of power hidden deep within. White orbs dance in a ring around her body, whirling faster and faster and taking on a violet cast as they spin. The orbs fan out, rocketing toward the downed Koutus; several of them seem to vanish entirely as they collide with the last of the electric-type's purplish forcefield, but the rest cut through it or simply pass by as it fades away and strike Koutus herself. The last efforts of the light screen go some ways toward softening the blows, but the Electrike is still quite miserable even as her hearing begins to return to normal.

Koutus slips and slides as she struggles to her feet, woozy and in poor shape. She tries digging her paw into the gritty slush again, but before she can scoop up enough of the mud she ends up right on her back one more time. In a rare moment of total muscular coordination Bel throws herself forward through the rain, slamming into Koutus in a burst of acerbic dark energy that eats away at her sparkling fur and the chilly skin underneath. The surprise attack carries both dogs straight back into the base of the cauldron; its sputtering, hissing flames wick some of the dark aura away from the tussling pair, but even with its intervention the wounds Bel leaves on her opponent are nearly as serious as those from the earlier facade attack. Waves of pain and nausea continue to wash over her bruised and sore body as she stands one last time; the half-hearted mud-slap she flings in Bel's direction does little to improve her mood, and while the addition of an extra layer of mud is quite irritating Bel still feels much more chipper by comparison.

Ref's Notes
-Roar distracted Koutus and prevented her from acting on the second action.
-Bel's Hidden Power is poison-type. I've realized that no one ever gets super-effective hidden powers when I ref. Huh.
-Sucker Punch was a critical hit despite the reduced damage due to the cauldron fire.
-The rain will probably clear the mud from Bel's eyes sometime next round, restoring her accuracy.
-Thank you, Blastoise. :)
-Wyvern attacks first next round.

Great job Bel! We've got her on the ropes!

Her Poison is still acting up, so if we can either survive a little longer or finish her this turn, we're all set. Now, hit her with something that she'll have a helluva time dodging, Swift! Just keep trying that until you hit. Remember you don't have to put a lot of power into it. Just enough to get her down to zero!
