Terrain: The Battle Factory

The Battle Factory’s arena is simple but practical: a large clay arena bordered by a two-meter-wide, three-meter-deep trough of water to accommodate water-dependent pokemon and attacks. The ceiling is retractable, allowing weather attacks to be used. Other than that, there’s nothing of note: just wide-open brawling space with nothing to get in your way.

The Battle Factory’s stands are mostly empty, housing only a few bored-looking spectators and one old guy who has apparently fallen asleep. The only enthusiastic-looking attendees are probably members of one of the competitor’s families. The first round of the Championship tournament isn’t the most highly-anticipated event in the history of the League, but for the challengers loitering to one side of the arena, it is just as important as any other match. Doing their best not to show any nervousness they might be feeling, they crane their necks to watch a huge screen mounted on the side wall between them. For now, it shows only their own names and faces, but at a signal from the referee, images of pokemon flash at the bottom of the display, a dizzying cascade of different species.

The randomization seems to last an age for the competitors whose victory may rest on what the computer chooses, but it is really only a few seconds before six images settle on the screen and, with a rattle, six pokéballs are dispensed into depressions below the display. The two trainers step up and select one pokéball each before making their way to the boxes marked off on either side of the arena.

A brief, muted stir of activity sweeps the stands. The League Championship is about to begin, and even the most jaded of spectator’s can’t help but feel a little thrill as the referee calls out the match’s beginning and two pokéballs are hurled into the air.

For this battle, you will be using a rental Pokémon instead of one from your team. The six (only one of each) available to you are the following:

Diglett (M) <Arena Trap>, Glaceon (M), Masquerain (F), Kecleon (M), Cherubi (F), Relicanth (M) <Swift Swim>

1. MurrMurr chooses
2. moon-panther chooses and attacks
3. MurrMurr attacks

Alright....I'll take the Glaceon (M)

He will be called Fang until the end of the battle. Fang, my boy, let's get down to it.

I want you to hit the Kecleon hard with a Dig attack. Dig down and strike when the time is right, following with a swift Blizzard. With his color change this should hurt him bad~

Dig ~ Dig ~ Blizzard

Well, well, you don't mind if I call you Mr. Powalski?

Mr. Powalski, we need to hurt that vicious Glaceon before he digs, so open up with a Shadow Sneak. Then, as he comes up, use Protect to ruin his strategy. End with Trick Room to keep you faster next turn. We're gonna need it.

Their selections made, the two trainers hurl out their rented pokéballs, releasing their pokémon onto the battlefield. MurrMurr's choice is Mr. Powalski, a stout keckleon who seems alert but calm as he stands at the ready on his temproary trainer's side of the field. Fang the glaceon, on the other hand, doesn't try to conceal his excitement, baring his teeth and pacing back and forth across the way from the kecleon.
Before Fang can get a chance to attack, though, Mr. Powalski is off, sinking into his own shadow, which then goes rocketing across the arena at an incredible speed. Fang is still puzzling over where the kecleon may have gone when he reappears, bursting up from his puddle of shadow directly behind the glaceon. The unsuspecting Fang takes a heavy blow to the back of the head and yelps, then turns around long enough to get a glare off at Mr. Powalski before settling down to his own attack.

Mr. Powalski backs off as Fang starts to dig at a frantic pace, the firm clay of the arena yielding easily before his claws. A steady stream of debris sprays into the air and the glaceon soon disappears into a deep, narrow hole. Once he has gone about six feet down, the glaceon pauses to rest and listen, gauging where his opponent is.

Mr. Powalski is waiting, standing relaxed but at attention as he keeps an eye open for some sign of his opponent. Below, Fang listens to the faint disturbances caused by the kecleon shifting his weight. Pinpointing the vibrations, the glaceon begins to dig upward again, homing in on his opponent. Mr. Powalski, meanwhile, stretches his paws out to either side, an invisible sheet of energy extending from both palms and curving back to form a seamless bubble around him. Fang bursts out of the ground just in front of him, prepared to make a surprise attack--but his lunge meeets only the solid wall of the protect. The glaceon bounces off the barrier in a spray of silver sparks.

The kecleon lets his protect drop while Fang staggers back, shaking his head. The ice-type recovers quickly, though, and takes a great breath before blowing out a concentrated blast of winter wind and snow. Mr. Powalski raises his paws in an attempt to shield his face, but it is no use; the roaring blizzard blasts past his defenses, chilling him to the bone and coating him in a thin layer of ice and snow. When the wind abates, the wintery covering falls away, but the kecleon's normally green skin remains a pale, glassy blue in its wake.
Chilled, Mr. Powalski nevertheless gets right back to business, closing his eyes and spreading his hands again. Glowing lines of psychic force spread from his palms, criscrossing one another and expanding into an ever-larger web of force. Fang shivers as the weird net slides over him and then on behind, expanding to encompass the entire arena. The air inside the bubble of psychic power seems heavy and strange, and everything seems to be happening out of order, almost as though time is running backwards.

Dang...that's not good at all now is it...Well, fang, we're not going to lose this one, that's for sure!

Fang! Time to do some damage! I want you to charge the lizard and slam it hard with a iron tail, followed up by a quick mud-slap...or clay-slap if that what's on the ground. After, use another blizzard to cause more damage.

If he uses protect, detect, or anything that stops your attacks, switch the attack with a Barrier, then continue with the attack system of hitting with super effective attacks.

Iron Tail/ Barrier ~ Mud-slap/ Barrier/ Iron Tail ~ Blizzard / Barrier/ Iron Tail/ Mud Slap

Allright, Mr. Powalski, let's try to not get too beat up here, OK? First, use Ancientpower for some clear-cut damage (and hopefully to raise your defenses). Then use a Substitute (15%) to stop Mud-Slap and keep you Steel type. Now, because Sub stops attacks and you're faster, use Taunt to negate the Barrier. If he does try to attack you on the third action, use the newly STABed Iron Tail.

In the confusion of the trick-room twisted arena, it is now Mr. Powalski who is the first to attack, folding his hands in front of him and letting out a low, tuneless humming as he summons spirits deep within the earth. Ancient rocks, lying trapped in the soil, shudder and glow as his command reaches them, then begin to struggle towards the surface, pushing aside tons of soil as they climb towards Mr. Powalski. The ground trembles briefly, and then a half-dozen large stones, surrounded by curtains of purple fire, burst up out of the ground and hover in formation around the kecleon. Mr. Powalski throws his hands forward, gesturing towards Fang, and the stones take flight, soaring across the arena and coming down atop the glaceon.

Fang is buffeted and burned by the possessed rocks, but as they tumble back to the ground, their power spent, he is still in good enough shape to bound around them and charge at Mr. Powalski. The glaceon's tail glows bright white, radiant steel energy turning it unusually tough and sharp, and Fang spins around as he reaches his opponent, slamming the iron tail home right into Mr. Powalski's chest.

The kecleon sits down hard with a gurgling gasp, his tongue lolling; from the place where Fang's tail struck, glittering silver fans out across his skin, supplanting the icy hue it had taken on until the kecleon's entire body has a metallic sheen. Though the iron tail was quite painful, Mr. Powalski is collected enough to start in on his next attack anyway, rubbing at the smarting welt on his stomach as he does. The kecleon spits up a pile of glistening, amorphous goop, which glows as it splats to the arena floor in front of him. The unlovely blob seethes and ripples, drawing itself up into the shape of a glowing, metallic kecleon, somewhat smaller than but otherwise a good likeness of Mr. Powalski.

It is this substitute that takes Fang's next attack; the glaceon turns around, kicking chunks of arena clay at the two kecleon. The substitute blocks the chunks of earth that otherwise would have struck Mr. Powalski, a few glittering spatters knocked free of its body as a result. Fang turns to look over his shoulder, trying to assess the situation; Mr. Powalski sits behind his substitute, skin still a shiny gray. After some contemplation, Fang decides to try another mud-slap, but this time even the substitute doesn't take damage--the attack flies wide of Mr. Powalski, and the construct has no call to put itself in danger.

Taking that as an attack, Mr. Powalski gets back to his feet and toddles across the arena. His tail, like Fang's before it, begins to glow bright white as energy rushes in to fill it with extra strength. Unlike Fang, he doesn't swing it around at his opponent; the kecleon merely turns around and lets his coiled tail snap out straight, smacking Fang solidly on the head before rolling back up again. The glaceon is driven to the ground with the force of the powerful blow, eyes tearing up, and a bleeding gash opens up on his skull just behind his left ear where the kecleon's tail sliced across his skin.

A ring of holes surrounds Mr. Powalski and his substitute, marking where the rocks, now scattered on Fang's side of the arena, broke free of the ground. The trick room continues to distort time within the boundaries of the arena (2 more actions).

Final Notes
- Rather tough call, but I don't think that Fang would have considered substitute to "block the attack," since the attack could still be executed and did damage, albeit not directly to Mr. Powalski.
- Mud-slap was a bit less powerful than normal because, although the arena clay is a bit heavier than dirt or sand, it's still not mud.
- MurrMurr attacks first next round.

Redo the Trick Room, then Iron Tail. If, on the last action, your type is still Steel, then use another Iron Tail. If your type has changed, use Drain Punch instead. If at any point that nasty Fang Protects, simply use Double Team for 2 clones.

Trick Room/Double Team (2 clones)~Iron Tail/Double Team (2 clones)~Iron Tail/Drain Punch/Double Team (2 clones)

Then I'll keep the same commands, except on the first action use Iron Tail by default and, if on the last action Fang Protects, use Trick Room instead.

So, Meester Powalski, that becomes:
Iron Tail/Double Team (2 clones)~Iron Tail/Double Team (2 clones)~Iron Tail/Drain Punch/Trick Room

Time to get rid of that STAB Iron Tail.

Fang, use Quick attack on the whelp, then follow up with a Toxic on the lizard. Then end this by digging under the ground to avoid the last attack. You can do this honey.

Trying to ignore the burning cut behind his ear, Fang digs his claws into the arena's clay turf, steeling himself for an incredible burst of speed. The glaceon kicks off with all the force he can muster, hurling himself forward so fast that even the weird physics of trick room can't constrain him. He flies across the arena, headed straight for Mr. Powalski--and then slams straight into the kecleon's substitute instead. The steely construct is hardly fazed by the quick attack, and as Fang minces back, shocked by the collision with the metallic substitute, Mr. Powalski comes around his avatar, tail glowing a bright white. Before Fang has a chance to get away, the kecleon whirls around and snaps his tail out again, catching the glaceon on the side of the face with another shattering blow.

Disoriented, Fang staggers away, trying to piece together his next course of action even as Mr. Powalski stalks after him, tail building up another blinding glow. The glaceon scrambles back, wondering disjointedly how the kecleon can be moving so fast, but Mr. Powalski keeps on coming. Once more he swings his tail around, knocking Fang to the ground with a vicious strike. For a moment the glaceon just lies where he has fallen, trying to think through a haze of pain. Mr. Powalski watches impassively as Fang starts to draw himself up, grimacing and with viscous purple liquid dripping around his bared teeth. The kecleon doesn't even flinch as the glaceon spits a mouthful of the toxic liquid in his direction; as before, his substitute steps in to take the attack, suffering the toxic without complaint.

By this point, the bubble of psychic energy enforcing the weird distortions of trick room is starting to weaken, the strands of psychic energy holding it up fading and fraying. As Fang's toxic is intercepted, one of the largest lines snaps at last, and in a flurry of decomposition the entire structure unravels.

When the trick room falls away, Fang feels reenergized, his limbs no longer weighed down by the strange atmosphere and Mr. Powalski's movements returned to normal speed. The kecleon looks to be preparing for another attack, and Fang doesn't intend to stick around and find out what it might be. Taking claw to floor once more, the glaceon digs himself a deep tunnel in a flurry of frantic motion before Mr. Powalski can even think about lashing out with another iron tail. The kecleon instead saunters up to the edge of the hole that marks where Fang disappeared, peering down into the darkness. His substitute comes up to stand beside him, and the two stare contemplatively into the deep hole, unable to see any sign of their opponent below.

OK. First off, redo the Trick Room. Then, get in one more Iron Tail. If, on the third action, your sub is broken, make another Substitute 10%. 10% this time. If it's intact, use Drain Punch. If he protects on an attacking move, standard Double Team.

Mr. Powalski takes one last look down into Fang's hole, then backs up a few paces and settles down to start up a new trick room. He spreads his hands, energy gathering in his palms, and sets about weaving the intricate web of power that supports the warping attack. Meanwhile, Fang lies at the bottom of his hole, glowing with power as he summons up his own attack.

Mr. Powalski's eyes flick towards the ceiling as a low rumbling starts up overhead. The roof cracks open down its center and begins to pull back, revealing a bank of dark clouds overhead. The kecleon stares up into the brewing storm, and a couple of seconds later a pair of hailstones spatter down on his face. The kecleon flinches, and as more hail tumbles to earth, any stones that strike the Mr. Powalski leave specks of bright blue behind on his skin. The spots expand and merge, until the kecleon's skin has turned from metallic to icy all over and he no longer feels bothered by the hail at all. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Powalski finishes tying together the strands of energy that make up a trick room and releases the attack to expand and encompass the arena again.

Even beneath the ground, Fang feels the influence of the trick room as it slides over him, bringing a feeling of weight and sluggishness to his limbs. This, combined with the damage to his head and body, is nearly enough to crush the glaceon under feelings of lethargy and despair. Nevertheless, despite his discomfort, the glaceon has to get moving to perform his next attack; there's no way for him to blow a blizzard up at Mr. Powalski without crawling out of his hole.

The kecleon, meanwhile, is feeling positively energetic under the effects of his trick room, pacing around and around Fang's hole with his substitute trailing behind. He tenses as he hears scrambling near the mouth of Fang's hole and starts to build energy in his tail. As soon as the glaceon's head pops up out of the hole, Mr. Powalski brings another iron tail smashing down on it. Fang's head slams against the ground and he almost goes tumbling away down the tunnel once more; only by digging in his claws and bracing his legs can he stay hanging where he is. The iron tail opens up another gash across his skull, too, further weakening his defenses.

Fang isn't done for yet, though, and as soon as he recovers, he blows a tremendous gust of ice and snow at Mr. Powalski, threatening punishing damage with a full-powered blizzard. Only the kecleon's substitute, which pulls Mr. Powalski down and shields him with its body, saves him from experiencing a spot of wintery revenge; the blizzard is too much for the substitute to bear, and it disintegrates before the vicious gust of wind.

Annoyed and a little rattled, Mr. Powalski clambers back to his feet and sets about making a replacement for the noble substitute; this time, though, when he spits out an amorphous blob of life energy, it crystallizes into an icy replica of himself, rather than a metallic construct. Unfortunately, the substitute is fated to have an exceptionally short life--Fang blasts another blizzard Mr. Powalski's way, and the kecleon is forced to hunker down behind his new avatar, only to watch it shatter and disperse before his eyes.

Final Notes
- There really isn't any way that Fang could summon an indirect blizzard to hit Mr. Powalski, so he tried to fire the attack without, at least, coming all the way out of his hole.
- MurrMurr attacks first yet again next round.

Allrighty, Mr. Powalski. First, if Fang doesn't drop into the hole, Shadow Sneak and kick him in. If he does waste an action to drop down, jump in and Drain Punch--hopefully the downfall will up the power. Then, if you're in the hole, Iron Tail, and if not, jumping Drain Punch. Same for the third action. However, if your Shadow Sneak forces him out (or indeed he gets out), Substitute 10% then Trick Room.

As he did at the beginning of the battle, Mr. Powalski melts down into his own shadow, skirting the cracked remnants of his substitute and flowing across the hail-spattered floor with sinister speed. He swings around behind Fang and leaps back into the open, wisps of ghostly energy still clinging to his body--and runs full-on into an invisible energy shield. Fang is still hanging tough on the edge of his hole, protected on all sides by an impenetrable barrier. Mr. Powalski prods the shield, somewhat petulantly, and watches as tingly motes of silver sparks burst up wherever his finger makes contact.

Abruptly the protect is gone and his hand passes on through empty air. Mr. Powalski blinks, and that's all he needs to do to miss Fang's next move. The glaceon surges up out of the hole, his whole body surrounded by a halo of white energy. In the blink of an eye Fang has run around the edge of the hole and flung himself at Mr. Powalski, motes of golden light swirling in the air around him and his front paws leaving burn marks on the Kecleon's skin where they connect. Mr. Powalski is aware only of a sudden roar of heat and light as Fang rams into him with his last resort, and then the kecleon is sailing through the air. He thumps back to the earth and rolls, color-changing skin snapping back to its default coloration as though startled into dropping its icy disguise.

Fang stays where his is, panting and now and then shaking his head to clear blood from his eyes. Mr. Powalski, meanwhile, lies where he is, suddenly acutely aware of the hail he'd nearly forgotten about since his transition to the ice type. The little pellets of ice sting every inch of his exposed skin, which is already slowly reverting back to its chilly blue color. Mr. Powalski swallows, suddenly feeling a lot less on top of things, then wearily sets about putting together another substitute with which to shield himself. This time the blob of gooey energy that he spits up is a faint green, much like himself; no sooner is out on the floor and molding itself into the same shape as Mr. Powalski than the hail starts to knock tiny pits in it, and its final form, though admirably kecleon-shaped, is a bit nibbled-on about the edges. Fortunately, Mr. Powalski's transition to the full ice type lends it the same protection as he has, and once as blue as its master, the substitute suffers no further damage.

No sooner has Mr. Powalski put together his latest substitute than the trick room he erected earlier falls apart, strands of psychic energy snapping and trailing uselessly away through the air. Fang raises his head hopefully as the choking atmosphere of the trick room disperses, but Mr. Powalski, with an exasperated sigh, is already preparing to put another in its place. Without any interference from Fang to contend with, the kecleon is able to put the attack together in record time, and soon enough Fang and the rest of the arena is wrapped up in another powerful field of distortion.
