Frontier Town Founder's Square

"I guess if his brothel or bar is a significant enterprise?" Those were the most logical guesses Nova could produce from that name.

Still, even she wanted in on the Rangers? She didn't strike Nova as someone who'd be in it for the first responder part of the job. Best to file that one away...

Mhynt sensed the skepticism in Nova's tone and gave an acknowledging nod to him. Perhaps they could compare notes later.

"A sponsor, hm? Well, I'm just arriving from The Wanderin' Zera and happened upon Tyranitar Gerome. He seems well-respected in the community. Would that be adequate if I were to go back for a sponsorship there, or if he were to meet any of us to vouch? What determines... a well-respected individual?"

Nico rubbed his lower beak with a wing, thoughtfully. "I mean, you could ask him? The veteran rangers know all the esblishment owners, and we'd probably accept a sponsorship from Gerome, he's a good guy. It's just normal to get them from public officials. But it's Chief Ayda's call in the end, so, like... 'Well-respected' really means the experienced rangers don't think they're full of sh– uh– full of sugar. Um."

He chuckled nervously.

"There's a reason I said to go to Lucien, and not the mayor."

"Hi, um... at the risk of sounding insane, what is a 'mystery' dungeon?"
"It's complicated. Think of them like... buildings that could spring into existence anywhere at a moment's notice and trap everyone around inside. Buildings where the furniture is arranged in ways that don't make sense. Oh, and the furniture might be booby-trapped."
"...What kind of monstrous creative force would make such a nightmarish thing?"

"Well, uh, 'Nova', I think it was? Yes? Nova has it about right, although they do vary a whole lot. That's a pretty scary example! The most common dungeon is just a forest or cave network that keeps shifting its layout around, like magic. They tend to be full of extraordinary items and dungeon gold, which makes them worth exploring, but they're also pretty dangerous. Booby-traps, sometimes. Almost always wild 'mon, or phantasms of them."

He smiled awkwardly at Corey.

"Some folks say they were made by the gods."

"Tell me more about the Escarpa Clan?"

The wattrel glanced at Felin, and seemed to panic until he remembered what she'd asked him about.

"Right, yes, the clanners. So, they're uh... I think the word is 'roughlanders', these days, if you're being mindful of your words? They move around all the time, don't use a whole lotta tools or buildings... They're warriors. Or at least, the warriors are in charge. If you think you can make a good impression on them, I guess you could try and ask Luxray Sierra to put in a good word for you, she's the current chieftain if I'm not very much mistaken."

He grinned bashfully.

"A good impression with those folks probably involves winning a duel with one of their own, or something..."

"It's complicated," was Nova's reflexive answer. Given without him thinking straight. He hesitated to add more. Because he certainly wasn't going to go off the mystery dungeons he knew. "Think of them like... buildings that could spring into existence anywhere at a moment's notice and trap everyone around inside. Buildings where the furniture is arranged in ways that don't make sense. Oh, and the furniture might be booby-trapped."
"Well, uh, 'Nova', I think it was? Yes? Nova has it about right, although they do vary a whole lot. That's a pretty scary example! Almost always wild 'mon, or phantasms of them."

He smiled awkwardly at Corey.

"Some folks say they were made by the gods."

Kimiko's first immediate thought was 'How could anyone live near a place like that?' A building that could spring up around you at any moment, shift the exit - or the path to it - at will, and every step you take could set off some kind of trap?? That explained he 'mystery' part, anyway...

Then she thought of a certain haunted forest and realized maybe these dungeons weren't the worst thing in the world. At least it sounded like they offered something valuable for suffering through it. Phantasms aside. She'd hate to meet any gods who offered this to their subjects, though.

And she had a sinking feeling in her gut that these dungeons had something to do with why the sparkly cloud had summoned them all here.

Another thought occurred to her with that. If they could appear without warning... "And what happens if one of these dungeons decides to just vanish with someone inside? ...Has that ever happened before?"

Kalas was not exactly paying attention when the Wattrel made landfall, focused as he was on the varieties of Pokémon he didn't know about; and only noticed the bird addition to the group of locals a moment later.

"Well," he said. "I have several questions! Why don't you shoot first and save me the trouble?"

Lucien sighed. "I've got other responsibilities, ranger. Why don't you speak to the newcomers yourself? Or better yet, read all about it in this morning's Gazette."

Kalas let out a nervous chirp at that and turned at Shiron.

"Uhm, do we want to be in the local news day one?" he asked nervously, not really noticing he was speaking aloud until maybe too late.

Still, once the Wattrel made the offer to ask questions, Kalas remained attentive to check for anything that came up to mind. He listened in particular to the concept of a 'Mystery Dungeon'. He was about to raise a wing and ask «good sir and or madam, what is a mystery dungeon?», but...

Especially in Mystery Dungeons."

Kimiko stepped forward and raised a leaf - then, realizing it didn't even go above her head and probably couldn't be seen, she raised a vine into the air, instead.

"Hi, um... at the risk of sounding insane, what is a 'mystery' dungeon?"

"Seconded here," Kalas added just to make sure they got it was not an universal concept.

Then again, when one of the two weird Pokémon gave an explanation, Kalas was not too convinced he wanted part of it. The commentary by Kimiko and others definitively did not help, and he made a mental note to scratch 'dungeons' from his plans for the moment and rather focus on figuring out who were the 'know-whos' in this new world.

He turned to the Wattrel and saw him fly up the statue that, Kalas reminded himself in silence, he had crashed into not five minutes before boy did that feel like it had been a day long five minutes. Kalas very, very strongly hoped that when he had crashed into the Empoleon statue earlier, he had not left a dent or a crack or something that the Wattrel would notice.

That said, the talk about the Union reminded him of something.

"So, uh, I have like a hundred questions but," he interjected, waving a wing up at the Wattrel. "All this talk about crazy dungeons and union work sounds real nice and I might apply later but aaaah, let's say I–"

The Spearow rolled his eyes at what he had just come up with for an excuse.

",and this is totally an hypothethical, I had a friend, say, a Zangoose. And this Zangoose had a problem that this Union or any other Union could not solve... like, a really weird or difficult problem. Where would this Zangoose then go in this entire frontier?"

Mhynt eyed Spearow, but then sighed and nodded. "If that's the case, I would like to seek sponsorship for now," she said. "I'm not very strong. But I suspect that if you compare our strengths within the next few days, you'll see potential in my growth rate. And I have experience with official work. Feel free to test me. I will need to be taught the protocol of this area."

Her real reason was more obvious. If they were supposed to help save this world, getting a foothold in an information center like a ranger's headquarters would be invaluable for getting intel. Additionally, they couldn't save the world while weak. They had to hone their powers. As far as she was concerned, this was the ideal spot to get to work on both fronts.

They also needed money. Her leaflike, tiny scales could only subsist on water and sunlight for so long.

Felin's eyes gleamed with gold, her tail spiked with alert and her thrummed with a deep purr. She pictured a scene in her mind; Felin Boots going up to the clan of warriors, declaring a joust against the toughest nutcracker her eyes could find. Victory would be impossible in her weak body. She'd fight them and lose, fight, lose once more, rinse and repeat until she'd won.

Her fur bristled from the scruff of her neck. Nostalgic memories coursed through her mind. No true legend starts with an unbeatable hero. The Escarpa Clan sounded like the excellent Pokemon to mold her. She needed to find this Sierra post haste.

Another thought occurred to her with that. If they could appear without warning... "And what happens if one of these dungeons decides to just vanish with someone inside? ...Has that ever happened before?"

Felin's fantasies screeched to a halt as if she'd crashed into a wall on her carriage. She took a deep breath and chuckled mirthlessly. "Where I'm from, those who vanish along with a dungeon are good as dead. Maybe this world works differently. Who knows?"

Nova heard the interest. Saw it on some people's faces. That was... fine. Good for them, he supposed. And he wasn't sure what to make of these roughlanders. Warrior clans only brought to mind...

No. Couldn't go there. Breathe. No coughing. No wheezing. Stay focused. Be helpful. Not in charge. Just helpful.

"You call this the frontier, sir." Nova straightened up his pose. "So, if I might ask, where is it that these lands are expanding from?"

"The gods... Some pretty malevolent and sadistic gods then," Corey grumbled, continuing his shuffling away from the group. This whole business of joining rangers and warrior tribes or whatever, that wasn't super-appealing to him. Sure, it made sense they'd all have to get stronger to face whatever was putting this world at risk, but did they really have to join one of these teams of thrillseekers to get that training? For that matter, he was a psychic type, wouldn't it be more efficient for someone like him to take to studying or meditating or something like that? Maybe this place had a library of some kind he could shut himself in for a while...

Eco twitched her mandibles with a puzzled look in her eyes, glancing at a few Pokémon in particular, such as Kimiko. "...Some of you have never heard of a mystery dungeon before? They're-"

The Grubbin paused her words, as she reminded herself of the whole "people from different universes joining together" ordeal. She opted for a quiet sigh instead.

"Nevermind."

“Ah, that was, a joke, and some lighthearted advice,” Archie frowned, resting his muzzle against the back of one of his paws. He hadn’t expected the confused look he’d gotten from Kimiko. “Sorry, was my tone off?”

He was never particularly good at humor, to be fair. Or, uh, being leaderly? Still, he turned to face the main group of Pokemon again, and listened in on the conversation as much as he could. Even from this distance though, the size of the crowd was getting to be overwhelming, too many shouted questions, snide comments, and chatter among the peanut gallery for the Oshawott’s taste. He highly doubted he’d be able to retain much of the information if he even wanted to.

The question Kimiko asked about Mystery Dungeons, on the other hand, seemed… Loaded. And the answer she had gotten from the green cat seriously wasn’t going to help any. The Oshawott remembered something Corey – his Corey, not the one who’d ended up here – had theorized to him once.

“Mystery Dungeons are places where the fabric of spacetime gets… Bunched up,” he said, “Where I’m from, it’s theorized that they’re places where the fabric of reality is thinnest, and therefore, places where multiple universes intersect. Dungeons appear and disappear as the universe enters and leaves that distortion. The dungeon’s entrance and exit are always fixed, so you always leave the dungeon into the same universe as you entered. But no one can stay in the dungeon forever, so, if their universe leaves them behind, then they’d have to get spit into a new universe, eventually.”

He hoped, at least, that that proposition was a little more hopeful sounding than vanishing forever.

Felin hummed with intrigue at the Oshawott's long explanation. "No two worlds have Mystery Dungeons work the same. Neither yours nor mine it sounds like. All the experience I have with my world's may not be any help with delving here."

She yawned, licked the top of her paw and began to groom her head. "To me that makes things more exciting. I'm not treading the same old ground. A lot ought to feel new."

Oh, well what do you know, there was that alternate Archie! Good to know the guy hadn't been sent off to the other side of the globe. As for his explanation for how these mystery dungeons potentially worked, he had to admit, there was something about that theory that curiously gelled with him... It made sense from how he'd suspected some spacetime anomalies could potentially go, and it actually made these horrifying labyrinths sound... plausible, for lack of a better word.

"Maybe so, but frankly I hope he's right... Disappearing into oblivion doesn't sound all too appealing."

Mhynt rubbed the bridge of her snout but made sure it was out of any official or civilian's line of sight.

Wonderful. 'Where I'm from, this fundamental phenomenon of the world operates like this!' He'd better hope it operated the same way in this world or they'd already immediately gone against Gerome's warnings...

She had a feeling that poor secret-keeping was going to be a trend. She kept mental notes on who she could trust to keep quiet if the need came about.

“Ah, that was, a joke, and some lighthearted advice,” Archie frowned, resting his muzzle against the back of one of his paws. He hadn’t expected the confused look he’d gotten from Kimiko. “Sorry, was my tone off?”

"I... sorry, it went over my head," Kimiko offered a reassuring smile. "Got a lot on my mind." She laughed humorlessly. "I guess most of us probably do, though."

There were a couple scattered responses to her question from her fellow nexus-mates, but Kimiko didn't really like any of them. Of course, she couldn't really come out and say that at the moment. She kept her face neutral as she listened, catching Mhynt's reaction out of the corner of her eye. It took her a few seconds of thinking it over, but she assumed she knew what that was about.

She'd hoped "where I'm from" was vague enough to imply the speakers had just come from distant parts of this world, but when everyone's answers for an inquiry were so widely varied, it was bound to raise a few eyebrows. Would asking 'do mystery dungeons function differently all over the world?' help or would that just dig their hole deeper? Maybe they were just mysterious enough that it was plausible for them all to function differently? Kimiko had no basis for comparison regardless, so she decided it best to simply stay quiet and not draw further unnecessary attention to the detail.

So instead of responding, she waited to hear the ranger wattrel's answer. The workings of this world were all that really mattered.

Clover skipped down the road, following voices and commotion as she felt a delicious stew of fear and anxiety mixing from nearly a dozen Pokémon.

"Hi, new friends!" she sang as she entered the town square. Barely a glance went back to her as everyone else focused on Nico's explanation of Mystery Dungeons.

Clover saw a little Ralts slowly sneaking away, looking and feeling very overwhelmed. She crouched down to his level and touched him on the shoulder.
"You're feeling all that craziness too, aren't you? I wonder if we're all supposed to start adventuring, or if some of us can be support here in town. I'm sure I could join a tailor shop and gather information or something. That or start a therapy business. Some of those Pokémon need it bad."

In the distance, a female Pokemon shouted for someone to leave. Dayle then cried, "I just gotta make sure you're safe!" Which was followed by more shouting. It eventually settled down, presumably because Dayle left to harass someone else.

"I'm feeling craziness alright," Mhynt said. "The first thing we probably need is a simple job. When will we be able to earn funds?" For alcohol.

"I haven't gone to that many dungeons, honestly. It was kinda freaky the first time around."

Somewhere along the way, more people had joined. Cool.

"I'd love to help out where I can. Not doing my part, I dunno, just feels wrong."

Corey briefly jumped at the unexpected feeling of someone tapping his shoulder, though he quickly relaxed once he noticed it was a... rather cheerful shuppet. Ironic indeed that he'd feel less afraid with a ghost type approaching him, but, he could sense this Pokemon's emotions were far from the sinister type, and almost... child-like in nature, if that made any sense.
"You're feeling all that craziness too, aren't you? I wonder if we're all supposed to start adventuring, or if some of us can be support here in town. I'm sure I could join a tailor shop and gather information or something. That or start a therapy business. Some of those Pokémon need it bad."

"Yeah, no kidding, I might be one of them..." he grumbled. "To be completely honest, I don't mind adventuring, that's partly what got me caught up in all this mess to begin with, but I can't just fling myself into a conflict, I've never gotten in a battle or anything before... not like this at least... and a bunch of these fellas are chomping at the bit to join these rangers and gangs and whatnot. Just seems a bit too sudden really, but then again, we might not have the luxury of taking our time either." Oh, great, now he was just rambling. The shuppet was probably getting bored out of her mind listening to all this chatter.

"Ah, sorry, here you mention therapy and I decide to just spill all my thoughts out at you without warning."

Nico's genuine smile gave way to a glazed-over panic as his impromptu Q&A session became an open forum on the problem of Mystery Dungeons, and with other questions still coming at him besides. To his credit, he seemed to be able to catch most of the flow.

"And what happens if one of these dungeons decides to just vanish with someone inside? ...Has that ever happened before?"
"Where I'm from, those who vanish along with a dungeon are good as dead. Maybe this world works differently. Who knows?"
"The gods... Some pretty malevolent and sadistic gods then."

"No two worlds have Mystery Dungeons work the same. Neither yours nor mine it sounds like. All the experience I have with my world's may not be any help with delving here."

"Okay, so, uh... I'm not totally sure what you guys all mean by all of this, it's pretty, uh, confusing... I've never heard of dungeons working differently on other... continents, maybe you meant...? But I guess I oughta tell you all that the thing about dungeons is that you can just... not go in them? A lot of places are dangerous even if they aren't supernatural. We – rangers, I mean – are always telling 'mon that they shouldn't play in caves, or try to make friends with wild ursaring, or use elemental attacks irresponsibly, or swim in the river if they aren't a real strong swimmer, or eat berries and mushrooms they don't recognise..."

He sighed, looking more fretful than before, but the wattrel's smile didn't fade.

"We don't know quite how Mystery Dungeons work, but lots of pokémon make a living delving them for gold and magic items, and they don't tend to vanish, or make people vanish. The Escarpa have been experts at it for generations. Rangers are trained in safe procedure for exploring them, and we have a pretty good idea of which ones are more or less dangerous."

He glanced at Corey, and looked a little askance.

"And which ones are sacred. I don't know quite how to say this, but if dungeons are created by gods, and they're kinda dangerous, maybe it's because 'mon aren't meant to use their sacred places as living space...?"

He laughed awkwardly.

"I'm not really the faithful or superstitious sort, myself. I leave an offering to the Two Aeons now and then – like most rangers – but that's about it! I have no idea what dungeons really are or how they work, and neither does anyone else as far as I know, whatever they like to think."

"Are there any maps around this town? Maps about any places close by, this town, this entire world, anything?"
"I had a friend, say, a Zangoose. And this Zangoose had a problem that this Union or any other Union could not solve... like, a really weird or difficult problem. Where would this Zangoose then go in this entire frontier?"
"You call this the frontier, sir." Nova straightened up his pose. "So, if I might ask, where is it that these lands are expanding from?"

Nico shrugged expansively. Birds could really get a good shrug going, when they wanted.

"Probably outside of the frontier, honestly. Maybe out east, to Landsverd? That's the heart of the Commonwealth, and they got a lot more civilisation that we do way out here. Luctemar is a big continent, and the Luctemarene Commonwealth doesn't cover half of it, even if you count 'unincorporated territories' like Sojavena. There's a big map of the region back at the Union HQ, and there's probably some maps in the town library, I'd guess..."

He shook his head.

"But it's a long and unsafe journey. At least until the railroad is up and running."

"I would like to seek sponsorship for now. I'm not very strong. But I suspect that if you compare our strengths within the next few days, you'll see potential in my growth rate. And I have experience with official work. Feel free to test me. I will need to be taught the protocol of this area."

"The first thing we probably need is a simple job. When will we be able to earn funds?"
"I'd love to help out where I can. Not doing my part, I dunno, just feels wrong."

Nico grinned encouragingly at all the new, strange pokémon looking to do their part.

"I can see some real good attitudes amongst you guys! I guess I'd tell you to get some good rest at the boarding house first, but, you could try asking around town and see if anyone has some work for you? Or try and get someone to sponsor you for the rangers, like I talked about. Speaking of – I gotta get back to base soon and make a report. The chief will wanna know all about you guys!"

Laura, who'd been cautiously listening to the clamour, raised a tentative paw.

"Nico, do you think you could keep an eye out on your patrol for any unevolved pokémon, could be groups or individuals, wandering about looking lost? There were meant to be more of us coming here, possibly, and it'd be a real help if you could point them our way."

He nodded enthusiastically. "Of course I can! That's pretty much my day job anyway, aheheh."

"That and collecting gossip for the rangers," mused Doc Drungfield.

Nico shrugged. "I run recon. If you wanna take offense to that, that's your business."
