What would you do with one or two of your favorite video game series? Yeah, it was inspired by the SEGA Blog topic...
Anyway, I choose STH.
Gameplay:
A mix of 3D and 2D. Largely based on the Sonic Adventure series. One technique, the Spin Dash would be default for all characters, as will grinding.
Sonic
One word: FAST. So fast the sides of the screen blur as you pick up speed. Sonic's levels would mostly have the camera focused behind him, with the occasional flip (maybe to 2D) when there's some fancy corkscrews or curves. There is an element of "choose your own path" but it's quite limited - at most there'd be three routes and the ability to change to a different one at different points of the level map. Best think of this like the older games - there was the high route or the low route, and the possibility of mixing it up.
His abilities from the start would include a basic somersulting roll and the classic Shield Jump (remember in STH3? When you pressed a button after you jumped and you had that neat shield around you? That's it), that if used allows you to kill foes the old fashion way as long as you activate the shield at the moment of impact. Gained abilities would include the now staple Homing Attack, probably gained very early in the game, and the Light Dash to travel across rings...that'd probably be it.
Tails
Tails' game would be slower then Sonics and would be explorative in a way. There'd be more ways to complete his levels due to his abilities and as such his level maps would be more detailed in terms of routes, since they'd still criss-cross like Sonics. The maps would also allow (if the level design permits it) aerial or brief swimmng routes.
Tails' default abilities would be flying. His powerups or learned abilities would include the Jet Anklet and that cool Rapid Tail Kick attack from SA for attacking foes. The Jet Anklet allows for extra flying time, so opens up more routes to the player.
Knuckles
Knuckles gameplay wouldn't be primarily a searching game like before. Like Tails, it'd be more focused on exploring the stage, though in a more literal sense then Tails. Naturally his method of navigating combines the underlying speed of the series with his own unique traits. His levels would through be the most complex, including: gliding, climbing, breaking walls just by running towards them, swimming and even underground areas.
Knuckles' abilities at the beginning would include climbing, gliding and punching. His unlockable skills would be digging and to speed up his gliding and climbing.
Special Stages
Whereas in the old ones, 3D was only used in the Special Stages, I'd change it so 2D was Special Stage only. It'd still have 3D models and such, just the old platformer gameplay. The stages would be similar in that a certain number of rings must be collected before hitting each checkpoint to continue and gain the emerald. The stages could be short, sweet bursts from the old games - so the first Special Stage is housed in a Green Hill Zone theme (where else would it be? Seriously?). The second could be in Chemical Plant, and include other memorable areas.
They're activated by collecting 50 rings and locating Giant Rings in certain stages. There are only fourteen to find in total...
Story:
Got a feeling this is where it'll fall on its face, if it hasn't already...
All
Dr. Robotnik/Eggman is once again, trying to take over the planet of Mobius. He's sent armies to take over Western, Southern and Angel Islands respectively, taking advantage of what each has to offer. Angel Island is home to some of the better ancient technologies and the Emerald Altar of course - Southern Island has some of the most valuable natural resources located in vast quantites - and Western Island is quite small and difficult to locate. As such, the strongest of his army is dispatched to Angel to try and stop the M.E. or it's gaurdian causing any trouble. The more scientific robots are sent to Southern Island to take advantage of what it has to offer. Lastly, he establishes Western Island as his main base...
Sonic
Returning to explore Western Island again after repeatedly only visiting Green Hill Zone, Sonic quickly finds that the island has been taken over. Using his blistering speed, he quickly begins to clear what robots he can as he tries to approach Robotnik's base, which sits atop the highest point of the island.
Occasionally after clearing a level, he'll pass by a monitor revealing the situation on the other two islands and will be able to interact with whoever is on the other side. Otherwise, Sonic's story is without companion, maybe including a few cameos (a quick reunion with Cream after saving her, before she and Vanilla head to a safe base cleared out earlier).
A recurring boss for him will be Metal Sonic in both races and battles and Robotnik in combat, though halfway through the game the Tails Doll will make an appearance and try to trick Sonic into a trap, posing as Tails. His "story" concludes with the destruction of the base, as Robotnik flees the scene.
Tails
Tails' story begins with his return to his home on Southern Island, only to discover his home is ablaze and the entire isle already captured. Deciding that there's no time to try and find Sonic to help him, he takes off to try and free the island himself, disrupting Robotnik's attempts to mine everything from the ground at the same time.
Because the island has been transformed into a research facility/army base due to the abundancity of oil, Tails will run into two familar faces who may help or hinder him - Shadow and Rouge, on the job for the government. Tails can choose to join their missions or go his own way, but no matter what their presence will be seen in the course.
Bosses for Tails will mostly be the state of the art robots being created right on the island - helping Shadow or Rouge could make these bosses easier, especially if they appear right after a mission with one of them. Tails' story concludes with the shutdown of all operations on Southern Island and him flying Shadow and Rouge to Western Island, so they can catch up with Sonic and if needed, take out the HQ.
Knuckles
Knuckles is the only one actually on his island at the start. At the very beginning he is seen fighting enemies approaching the altar with Team Chaotix, beating them back soundly. He knows he has to protect the rest of the island and leaves the Emerald in the hands of the Chaotix before setting off.
Knuckles, like Sonic and Tails, communicates with the hubs but does so less frequently, preferring to check up on the Chaotix. He also rescues Amy from a horde of robots midway through his game, so she joins him as a slightly fiesty travel companion. (Think Sonic and Tails, but with totally different personalities). It left behind she'll easily catch up, though if asked she'll just say "I used that shortcut."
Knuckles bosses are centred around both hordes and singular foes. A main enemy who appears is Metal Knuckles, either with or without hencemen. Knuckles' story concludes when, after destorying a group of robots holding the M.E. and the Chaotix hostage, he finds that the M.E. has been transported to Western Island. The Chaotix agree to hold down the fort once more as he and Amy use transporter to follow it.
Final Story
Emeralds collected in all stories are counted together. The player must choose a character to be, though they can replay it as a different one.
In the last story, the characters gather to find that Robotnik has one last ace up his sleeve - a revived Death Egg, now Death Egg Mk. II.
If the player has collected 7 Chaos Emeralds
Sonic, Tails and Knuckles step forward and manage to get onto the Death Egg before it leaves the Earth completely. Once on they use the Chaos Emeralds to go Super and do battle with the true final boss. After defeating it, they flee the falling Death Egg and land safely back on Western Island, watching as it falls.
If the player has collected 7 Chaos Emeralds and 7 Hyper Emeralds
Sonic, Tails and Knuckles step forward and manage to get onto the Death Egg before it leaves the Earth completely. They use the Emeralds powers to enter Hyper form and fight the last boss, but must also try and destory the Death Egg before it falls into the Earth so it can't be rebuilt. Having done this, they reland with their friends and allies and celebrate as the Emeralds wipe away Robotnik's creations from the islands.
Design:
Just a few notes really.
Largely, return to the old styles. Sonic's hair must be causing drag with how long it is and Tails looked cuter retro. Amy...urgh. Never been a fan of clothes that scream "PANTY SHOT" personally. But yeah.
